🌸 残桜 -zanka- English Translation

Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about Zansakura -zanka-, one of Komaeda’s character songs written and sung by Megumi Ogata, and so I started digging deeper into the lyrics only to notice there were a good handful of nuances that the English translation on the wiki didn’t quite capture. I’ve loved this song for a long time, and I thought I might try my hand at a quick translation of my own.

(Disclaimer: Though I’m studying Japanese, I am far from an expert, and I’m fairly new to translating Japanese songs. I will have surely made mistakes—if anyone more knowledgeable might disagree with a choice or see something I missed, I would love if you pointed it out!)

🌸 Lyrics

“See you again tomorrow,” I laughed—within my heart, transient cherry blossoms

A misty cloud of flowers with the hues of rising smoke beckoned me—as I finally managed to arrive,

A flower’s shadow wavered over the ripples in the water, then Fell [1]

Like the cherry blossoms opening as if to convey warmth

This life [2] that blooms in ordinariness and flutters down

Where will it land?

The hand of the ticking clock stops—from a heart in full bloom, a rain of cherry blossoms

A storm of flowers, a sudden wind—as I stopped still and opened my eyes,

Rafts of flowers had covered the surface of the water, drifting away

Like the cherry blossoms opening as if to mourn the passing spring

To live an ordinary life, and to die together [3]

If that could come true—alas…

If only the North Wind and the Sun showered down on everyone equally

When, after surmounting the storm, a great flower blooms—Hope— [4]

Before I knew it, just a single thing remained [5] for that withering branch

Plucked of its flowers and in decay, the wounds keep on thirsting, yearning

For the sake of the cherry blossoms opening as if to fight the coming winter

Until the day this ordinary life receives water [6]

[1] Written with an alternative character for “fall” that appears only here in the song, and that suggests not only falling, but also degrading or going astray.

[2] Written as “life”, but sung as “way/path”.

[3] The object of “together” is unclear—it could refer to dying along with the spring, or with another person. Discussed a little more here.

[4] Written as “big flower”, but sung as “hope”.

[5] Written with the same character for “remaining” used in the title.

[6] The verb is “to be watered/poured”. I was unsure. The previous translation went with “until the day this ordinary life is devoted”, i.e. the life itself is what gets poured out. But I think my interpretation might also work with the extended metaphor here.

i figured i would ask u bc ur the designated nagito komaeda blogger in my mind and probably have a better handle on his character than i do. but i was talking w my gf about how like??? silly he was during the tragedy??? i havent touched ultra despair girls in a hot ass minute but like. comparatively to everyone else i feel like he was kinda like. just hanging around ?? i was wondering if u could kind of provide insight as to Why he was acting the way he was at that point?? and how he had changed from before the tragedy. ?? :3 thanks in advance and sorry if uve already spoken abt this haha

OKAY, HI!!!! So, I think there's some of this lightly touched upon in my very somewhat older post on my opinion on servant since I think he's one of the better aspects of Udg! Otherwise your question is pretty specific and I'd be happy to thoroughly answer it. :)

Nagito's pretty silly as a despair I have to agree, for the most part though his influence shouldn't be understated.

What makes Nagito different as a despair is that normally he has a limit to how far he'll go, he obviously at both points believes anything is okay for hope though. He absolutely hates Despair but views it as a NECESSARY thing for Hope to happen, this is consistent but as a despair we see he's willing to become despair himself to cause hope to happen. He's the reason Komaru is there at all since he believes she may be like his brother and have a potential talent, or hope, inside of her like her brother did. He helps the warriors of hope with Despair and brings an element that may cause Hope so the despair turns into hope in the end. He doesn't find himself worthy and, of course, as usual is doing things from the sidelines. He appears to be a "servant" but he's the most in control of things only second to Monaca. That's a reason I actually do enjoy the "servant," aspect of his appearance here.

Servant is Nagito's absolute beliefs and coping mechanism pulled to its utmost disgusting and extreme. And it's interesting because the killing game ITSELF is impacted by this leading to his worst mentally. He's disgusted by the despair later on reading the file, his classmates being terrorists, him resorting to being despair himself, he hates it. The Nagito we see in the killing game hasn't developed the love hate relationship for Junko yet and is disgusted by all of it.

Basically, Nagito beforehand hates despair but thinks it's necessary for Hope so it has a valid reason to exist. Servant can wrap his head around loving despair and actively is okay serving for it himself all in the name of hope, and when that leans into the gaslit love for Junko it's so at fundamental odds with himself that he goes spiraling thinking about it. The main difference is how he's more willing to cause or assist Despair for the Hope himself and things being warped to the point where he "loves" Junko. His mind is warped into not hating Junko and he's more willing to actively love and serve Despair in the name of Hope.

A distinction that’s not enormous or groundbreaking, but which I think is important nonetheless and which I haven’t seen brought up, is that Zanka isn’t just about Komaeda’s life being transient. It’s about how everything is transient and always has been. Komaeda, we know, is the branch. And so the short-lived blossoms “within his heart” aren’t him, they’re everything he cared about. A friendly interaction with someone at the start is a “flower”—but like all the rest, he knows it won’t last. Over the course of the song, which I think might sort of span his whole life, he’s watching as everything he has gets taken away from him piece by piece. He can’t cling onto happiness for long. Obviously his life is transient too, but by the end it’s one of the only things he still has. That, and his endless wait for hope—otherwise, there will soon be nothing left.

And I think I take back what I said the other day; I do think the ambiguous “to live an ordinary life, and to die together” most likely refers to a person. (Though I still think he’s pretty apathetic about how soon his own death comes.) Because at this point in the song, his life has “entered its final round and become a rollercoaster ride”, and he’s feeling desperate in ways he still can’t quite acknowledge explicitly. The petals are falling all at once now, in pairs or threes. And he’s still apart and alone.

How did Komaeda get here?

(Fanfic for @white-boy-bracket) Christopher Pierre was trying to have a walk in the woods. I say trying because he was mostly slamming into trees. He heard a sound behind him and smacked into another tree, causing him to fall backwards.

“Oh my, are you okay?” Asked a voice behind him. Christopher looked up to see a young asian man with wild white hair standing over him. “Yes, yes I am.” Christopher snapped.

“Oh, you looked fine, I just wondered if something was wrong. After all, that tree appeared to be directly in your line of sight.”

“Well um,,,” Christopher scratched his head in embarrassment. “I’m actually blind in my left eye. So when I’m not paying attention I tend to,,, walk into things.”

“Ah,,,” the young man said. “Sorry for asking about that, I didn’t mean to be rude.”

“No, it’s fine. You weren’t rude at all. You’re genuinely nicer than most people who have learned about it.” “Oh, worthless trash such as myself doesn’t deserve such a compliment, I am simply here to help others gain their ultimate hope.”

Christopher could NOT understand a thing about this young man, but his willingness to be used could be very useful, especially since Christopher already had experience in using and manipulating people. “Well, would you like to work with me?” Christopher offered. “Most everyone else has someone or something to help them cheat with. So your help would be invaluable.”

“I would love to be a stepping stone for your hope.” The young man responded. “I forgot to ask, what is your name?”

“Komaeda. Nagito Komaeda.”

“Nice to meet you Komeada. My name is Christopher Pierre.”

Christopher was leading Komaeda over to the cabin(thanks to Komaeda’s help Christopher didn’t smack into any more trees), when they ran into,,, Paul Matthews. This could either be great, or horrible. Paul didn’t like Christopher. That was fair. Paul came up to them.

“Um,,, okay. There’s another new person here. I-,,, who are you?” Paul asked.

“Oh, yes, Paul, this is Komaeda. Komaeda, this is Paul.”

“Hello Paul” Komaeda said. “Uh, Hello Komaeda.” Paul responded nervously. “Look,,, um,,, Ivegottagobye!” Paul booked it into the woods. “I think Paul is scared of you.” Komaeda observed.

“Yeah, he is.” Christopher said, staring after Paul. They’d just hit the cabin when Christopher paused. “Shit. Where are you going to sleep? The cabin is full. Most of us have to sleep in the conversation pit, and there’s no room there anymore.” “I can sleep in the woods.” Komaeda said cheerfully. “Um, okay, if you want to.”

i will always adore komaeda, i adore the people i met here exclusively because of komaeda, but the thing is he was... never quite a squishy type of character considering all the characters i like are sapphic. the main reason i started loving him so much in the first place is bc he was so important to my friend (if that friend is reading this No You're Not). and like one thing about me is that i am such a thief of characters and ships from people i consider friends.

i will always love that little gay weirdo!! but the kinds of stuff i post now is more authentic to my personality even tho i had a lot of fun writing my komaeda posts :))
