The Journey to Cure Wing: A history of magical boys in PreCure

Spoilers for Kira Kira Pretty Cure A La Mode

As the Pretty Cure franchise jumps into 20th anniversary celebrations, the 20th season, Soaring Sky Pretty Cure, has introduced a lot of firsts for the franchise: a blue-themed leader who isn’t from Earth, as well as an adult Cure, the first with a driver’s license. But one piece of news lit up like no other: for the first time, there would be a boy on the team, with Cure in his name, who isn’t a supporting character or sidekick. It’s been a long journey but this is significant for the show, and also for the genre as a whole, since Pretty Cure is now the dominant magical girl series for Japanese children. How did we get here?

When Futari wa PreCure began in 2004, it was a show focused on not just entertaining young girls, but also showing that girls can enjoy activities stereotypically associated with boys without detracting from their femininity. With the tagline “Girls want to rampage too”, it was no surprise there was no rush to include boys in this series. To be sure, a lot of magical girl series, especially those intended to sell toys in the girls’ aisle, have historically been a no-boys-allowed party, though they’ve been a secondary part of the genre since Cub caused trouble with Sally in Sally the Witch (1966). By the mid 2000s, all the big magical girl series were only about girls, with exceptions in Tokyo Mew Mew (2002) and Phantom Thief Jeanne (1999), which both featured magical boys who were separate entities and love interests to the protagonists. It would be a few more years before Shugo Chara (2007) and Anyamal Detectives Kiruminzoo (2009) presented magical boys as parallel team members and equal parts of a magical girl team.

My friend @wingedcatgirl is thinking of getting into more Magical Girl shows. She's already seen Miraculous, half of Nonoha, and Madoka.

I've recommended the obvious stuff like Tokyo Mew Mew, Sailor Moon, and Card Captor Sakura and I was going to recomend the Precure franchise but that ones pretty big and I was wondering if you had any specific seasons you'd reccomend

Oooh yeah the Precure franchise is great for classic Magical Girl shenanigans! Personally of the ones I've seen, Kira Kira Pretty Cure A La Mode is my favorite and I think would be a pretty good one to start off with, it's got some very well-planned character arcs for every member of the team, really solid pacing, and it commits to its theme.

Aside from that one... maybe Heartcatch? A lot of people consider it to be the best Precure season (I don't, but it's still quite solid) and it's arguably the most widely beloved season. It's got some solid character arcs as well and the problem-of-the-week episodes, with how they dig into the different minor characters' problems and foibles, are top-notch. I'd argue that the plot isn't very strong, but it's still a solid season.

Of course there are other Precure seasons I really enjoyed, but to try and get someone into the franchise, I'd try one of these two first (and I'm rooting for Kira Kira more, it deserves more love).

A few magical girls in PMMM's art style.

SOOOO a while back, after seeing those "my character in various different art styles" template, I got this idea to do something similar where I'd draw a magical girl, but in various different styles of other magical girl series.

Originally it was gonna be one single magical girl in various different art styles, but I kinda decided to instead do many different magical girls in a single magical girl anime art style for one part, then change it to another magical girl anime art style for a second part, etc.

I'm thinking after I'm done with everything, I'll then organize a single character into their own picture and show them in different art styles, like the original art template (I hope I explained this well lol.)

Anyways I decided to start off with PMMM's art style since I think it's the easiest to draw for me. I'll do parts with other magical girls in PMMM's art style soon, and then move onto another magical girl art style after that.
