Daniel Hertzler House Museum
State Route 4 West
Springfield, OH
The Daniel Hertzler House in Bethel Township, Clark County, near Springfield, Ohio, was built in c. 1854. It is a brick house of Pennsylvania "Bank Style" architecture, larger and more complex than other historic structures in Clark County, Ohio. Hertzler became wealthy in the milling and distilling business in Mad River Township, selling that in 1853; and then entering into businesses in Springfield, including a Clark County Bank. He had nearly completed construction on a new milling business, when he was murdered in his home on the morning of October 10, 1867.
Like so many early Americans Daniel Hertzler was an entrepreneur. Born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1800 he grew up as a Mennonite. During the early 1830s Daniel, his wife Catherine, and their first child Barbara moved to Clark County, Ohio. He managed a farm, a sawmill, a gristmill and a distillery. Later in his life he would start the Old Clark County Bank. In 1850 Hertzler purchased 315 acres of land southwest of the Springfield. After tearing down Jonathan Donnels 1795 log cabin, the Hertzlers built their home overlooking the site of the old Shawnee village of Piqua.
The Hertzlers would have 10 children and lived a good and prosperous life until the fall of 1867. Even with his owning a bank there were rumors Daniel Hertzler kept large sums of money in his home. Just rumors perhaps, but that was all that was needed. On October 10, 1867, Daniel Hertzler was found shot to death in the northwest room of his home. Authorities arrested 2 men suspected of the crime, but they later escaped and the mystery was never solved.
The farm stayed in the family until 1914 and is today owned by the Clark County Park District. Restoration began in the 1960’s and continues today. The kitchen fireplace has been rebuilt with its secret metal box placed within. Today the museum is furnished to its1855 appearance of a pre-civil war American home. Visitors can get to know what Pre-Civil War life was like through the eyes of a local legend, Mennonite pioneer and wealthy entrepreneur Daniel Hertzler. Hertzler was a 19th century corporate king and a money-lender who owned a grist mill, saw mill, brick distillery, whiskey distillery and over 1,000 acres of farmland. Hertzler’s wealth and status would ultimately lead to foul play and Mr. Hertzler’s demise. Visitors can experience the mystery, piece it together for themselves, and investigate the house’s unsolvable murder while on a tour. The Daniel Hertzler House was listed with the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on February 7, 1978.

King's County 8 Year Single Barrel Bourbon
Review by: Wryan Distillery Only Release Barrel no. #2021 My introduction to King’s County is thanks to another New York distillery funny enough. Ragtime Rye from NY Distilling Co. is where I first learned about the “Empire Rye” designation. A handful of New York distilleries, I was slowly familiarizing myself with, wanted to create a distinctly New York product. I started to dig into the…

Yearly Themes 2024: Experiences and Foundation (SH 88)
A Yearly Theme is a high-level idea that guides you throughout a year or season. It's not a resolution. You don't set any specific metrics to achieve. A theme is not to lose X pounds by the end of the year or read Y books this year. It's more of a high-level idea that guides your decisions throughout the year (e.g. Year of Health, Year of Order, Year of Novelty)
In the final episode of 2023, the humans review their themes from last year—Aidan explored "experiences," and Evan focused on "foundation." They share the highlights and challenges from the last 12 months before unveiling their Yearly Themes for 2024. Wrapping up the season with reflections and anticipation for the year ahead.

6 Degrees Of Cats Podcast Launches Season Two: Witches, Whiskers & Whisky
Tumblr media
Did you know that 29 percent of all households in the U.S. owned at least one cat? That is a potentially large audience for a cat podcast.
I understand that if you are a "dog" person you may not care. Or if you're fascinated by coy ponds or parrots, a cat podcast may not catch your interest.
On Halloween, cats occupy an important mythological significance for this holiday. It is particularly appropriate, then, that I offer you 6 Degrees of Cats. The podcast bills itself as "the world's #1 (and only) cat-themed culture, history and science podcast."
Thankfully, for listeners, the show lives up to its boast.
The podcast launched in Spring 2023 and has returned this Fall on October 31 with its season debut episode, "Witches, Whiskers and Whisky: Re-introducing the Original Cat Lady of Halloween!"
This episode showcases an impressive panel of expert guests, including Dr. Megan Goodwin, host of hit religion and history podcast “Keeping It 101”; culinary historian and author of “Endangered Eating” Sarah Lohman; and Kings County Distillery founder and writer Colin Spoelman.
Listeners have described 6 Degrees of Cats as "educational, thought-provoking, meditative AND fun" and praise host Amanda B.'s hosting as "...not only informative but highly engaging and entertaining". Tink Media's Lauren Passell named “6 Degrees of Cat” as a "...well-written and researched cat show…” and host Amanda B. as “...spunky and and playful with audio."
In this second season,"6 Degrees of Cats" will offer listeners an international lineup of leading voices in fields such as animal welfare, music, history, religion, and even pizza. Notable guests this season include “My Cat From Hell” star Jackson Galaxy, global rock sensation Malina Moye, Islam scholar andHead on History podcast host Ali Olomi, and founding pizza czar Anthony Falco.
Throughout the nine-episode season, new episodes will be released biweekly on all major podcast platforms and YouTube. There is a companion newsletter, "The Captain’s Log," for exclusive bonus content and opportunities, and listeners can subscribe.
6 Degrees of Cats has a lot of things going for it as an ear-worthy podcast. First, it's not a "cat lady" podcast where cat lovers, mostly women, tell super-cute stories about their cat Mittens. The show looks at cats in history, mythology, and culture. For example, I loved the April 25th episode about Vikings and cats. Norse folklore expert Terry Gunnell will fascinate listeners with his tales of cats and the Viking culture.
Second, the podcast has an infectious intro music "Josie & The Pussycats" beat, and the show manipulates sound with purpose and to great effect. I personally commend any podcast that fully uses its greatest asset -- sound. Third, the host, "Captain Kitty" aka Amanda B. is terrific. She's smart, funny, informative, and has endless energy. Amanda B is a Korean American transracial adoptee based in Brooklyn, New York. She was selected into a cohort of 10 out of 18,000 applicants to go through Spotify's first Sound Up podcast accelerator for women and non-binary podcasters of color in 2018. As a musician, she has supported international performing artist Peaches onstage for The Samantha Bee Show’s 2017 Not the White House Correspondents Dinner broadcast, and recently released a sophomore full-length album with her rock ‘n’ roll bandLeathered. Amanda B consults for clients including The Podcast Academy to produce and facilitate community and professional development programs, and volunteers forOkaySo, a free mental health app for young people.
I am a self-confessed cat person. I have two cats, Moogie, an extroverted cream-colored barn cat, and Tinker Bell, a Calico who chips like a "tortie." They both listen with me and give it four paws up.
What I like most about 6 Degrees of Cats is its scholarly intentions toward cats, the hosting skill of Amanda B, and the catchy friskiness of its audio.

Cooking  Feast on recipes, food writing and culinary inspiration from Sam Sifton and NYT Cooking.
Not too many cooks, but just enough: There are 75 of them — chefs, farmers and Indigenous home cooks — that have contributed recipes to this collaboration between the United Nations and Kitchen Connection Alliance, a nonprofit that seeks to improve systems for growing and distributing food worldwide. Sustainability and healthy eating are front and center. There are five recipe sections covering food systems, biodiversity, sustainable consumption, food and climate change, and food waste. Among the stellar recipes in the generally vegetable-forward collection are Moroccan chorba with eggplant and sweet potato; a simple squash soup from the American Black Créole Community; Austrian potato goulash; and venison carpaccio with watercress salad, suitable for a party buffet. The carbon footprints are given only for the recipes in the climate change chapter; though they have them for the other recipes. And as comprehensive as this book might be, there is no recipe index and almost no reference to buying organic, though “sustainably sourced” is advised for seafood and eggs. Proceeds from sales benefit the development of a children’s version of the book and support the U.N. Bookstore and projects with Indigenous communities.
“The Cookbook in Support of the United Nations: For People & Planet,” Under the Direction of Earlene Cruz at Kitchen Connection Alliance (Kitchen Connection, $29.00).
Amp Up Your Thanksgiving Gravy
Tumblr media
There are myriad methods for turning pale, thin turkey gravy into a lustrous, nut-brown, velvet-textured sauce. Commonplace thickeners include cold water slurries of flour or cornstarch stirred in and brought to a simmer, the latter resulting in a more translucent result. For color, you can resort to a splash of Worcestershire or soy sauce. But there is another way, which adds umami in addition to richer texture and deeper color: red miso. Use about a tablespoon for two cups of gravy, perhaps made from degreased pan drippings and homemade turkey stock, but taste as you go; the miso can be salty. Red miso is handy to have on hand for enriching sauces, soups and stews. Keep it in the refrigerator — it will long outlast the appliance’s warranty.
A History of the ‘Vous
Tumblr media
For more than 70 years in Memphis, Tenn., the Rendezvous, a restaurant familiarly known as the ‘Vous, has been a magnet for barbecue lovers. It was founded by Charles Vergos, who was Greek, and is still family-owned, now into the second and third generations. It was notable not just for pit-smoked ribs, but for its longtime waiters, their personalities and excellent service. It’s now the subject of a compelling new documentary, “The ‘Vous,” narrated by several members of its mostly Black staff, including Percy Norris, Jack Dyson and Calvin Bell, who tell the story of the restaurant and its owners from its inception through the Jim Crow era, the civil rights movement and up to the present. The film was made, in part, to preserve memories of the staff, many of whom have retired or soon will.
“The ‘Vous,” directed by Jack Porter Lofton and Jeff Dailey, a Mudroom film produced by Ruth Whitney and Pat O’Brien, streaming through Sunday on DOC NYC, www.docnyc.net, $12.
A Boozy Taste of Autumn
Tumblr media
Adding a little of Heimat New York’s new Barrel-Finished Bosc Pear Liqueur to a premeal glass of bubbly gives it a touch of rustic fruit flavor that suits the season. Small pours of the liqueur, straight, become a lovely digestif worth considering for Thanksgiving dinner’s finale. The liqueur, at 22 percent alcohol and macerated from Hudson Valley pears, is aged for 13 months in bourbon barrels from Brooklyn’s Kings County Distillery. The result is a pale russet-toned liqueur, a little cloudy on purpose, with a mouth-filling viscosity. The bouquet captures the fruit, the essence of which lingers on the palate.
Heimat New York Barrel-Finished Bosc Pear Liqueur, $25.99 for 375 milliliters at Wine Bazaar in New Rochelle, New York, winebazaar.com.

 MAIDSTONE STROKE GROUP
OCTOBER NEWSLETTER 2022
GIN
MY FAVOURITE DRINK
HOW KENT TOWN BECAME BY-WORD FOR QUALITY GIN AROUND EUROPE
Maidstone has been famous for several industries over the years: paper making, custard powder and even toffee. But one product long associated with the county town is gin.In fact spirits from the County Town were renowned across Europe, famously quaffed by Nepoleon, before Maidstone Distillery closed in 1982. Now the distillery's newly-launched name-sake, based in Market Buildings, is re-claiming this legacy, and is about to launch a new Morella rose gin – the first time cask aged spirits have been produced in Maidstone for more than 40 years. The drink distilled from grain alcohol and juniper berries has seen its popularity ebb and flow over the centuries, possibly in my case more flow.It started life as a Dutch drink called genever and, prior to the late 17th century, we English much preferred a glass of French brandy. But then in 1688,a young Dutch Protestant prince, William of Orange, and his English wife Mary snatched the crown of England in a bloodless revolution, deposing the Catholic King James 11, thus ushering in a Protestant revival and a new disdain towards Catholic France. Short history lesson over, back to the gin The great popularity of Maidstone gin was because of its extra strength and quality. It was 83% proof ( the average strength of gin today is around 70% ). Demand was so great, that Bishop soon set up branch distilleries in London and Liverpool. At the height of production, the Maidstone Distillery was producing 5,000 gallons each week. George Bishop died in 1793 and the distillery passed to other members of his family: his brother Sir William Bishop, and nephews ( another ) George Bishop, and Argyles Bishop, who were sons of a third brother, James. Things did not go well, with Sir William dying in 1817 ( both he and George are buried at All Saints Church, Maidstone ) and the business was sold to new owners in 1819, but with the younger George Bishop continuing as manager of the concern. Meanwhile, Argyles Bishop had married into the wealthy Brenchley family set up a rival distillery in St Peter Street in premisises that were later engulfed by the Maidstone Brewery. Both distilleries closed when Parliament resinded their special tax privileges on the grounds that the concessions had been personally made by George Bishop ( senior ). But Maidstone gin underwent a revival a few decades later. In the mid-1850s, Thomas Grant, a desendant of one of those who had worked with George Bishop, set up a new distillery in Maidstone in Hart Street. It didn't cease production until 1982. Bishop's original distillery in Bank Street was converted to a steam-powered corn mill. It was destroyed by a fire in 1926. Now gin-making in Maidstone has restarted with the opening in June 2020 of a new Maidstone Distillery based in Market Buildings. Its first gin was named after the great man himself: the George Bishop London Dry Gin. Its Morella rose gin launches September. This new Maidstone Gin Distillery in Maidstone is well worth a visit and who new Maidstone has been distilling gin all these years, interesting and as my favourite drink and I now others within our group love gin as well here endith the history lesson.

HIP OPERATION- PATIENT HOME SIX HOURS
AFTER OPERATION
A patient walked out of a hospital just six hours after going under the knife for a full hip replacement, thanks to a new style of surgery. It was the first time the minimally invasive op had been carried out in Kent. The technique means the hip is removed without disturbing any of the muscles and tendons holding it in place.Following the surgery, at Maidstone Hospital, the patient said: “having had one hip replaced five years previously I was aware of the procedure and the need for my involvement in being physically fit before and after the operation. “I was back on my bike and walking for an hour unaided within three weeks and believe this should be possible for any senior citizen. I'm looking forward to next year's ski season. “My kindest thanks to the whole team in the orthopaedic unit. You are all very special people working for a world class organisation”. Typically, patients who undergo hip replacement surgery in the UK spend an average of three nights in hospital to recover. Unlike traditional methods, the new type of surgery does not cut any muscles leaving the patient with relatively less pain and bleeding. The operation was carried out by the trust's orthopaedic team and is the only dedicated unit throughout the whole of Kent and Sussex. Including this patient, they have now performed five day case
hip replacements over the last few months. Patients have been carefully selected for the trailblazing treatment and it is hoped many more will benefit from the new techniques in the future. Syed Ahmed, consultant in trauma and orthopaedics at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust said: “There are great benefits of using this techique for both our patients and our orthopaedic service. “It enables the patient to make a much quicker recovery with less pain and discomfort. Patients appreciate being back on their feet on the same day and being able to sleep in their own bed at night”.

CUTTING EDGE TECH HELPING TO FREE UP HOSPITAL BEDS
Wristband system reducing waits by quarter
State-of-the-art surveillance technology which has been helping hospital patients get space on wards more quickly is set to be rolled out to other healthcare sites in Kent. Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust ( MTW ) introduced the system in November 2020 which keeps tabs on the availability of its 712 beds and since then it has reduced patient transfer time by a quarter. The system, created by Tele – Tracking technologies, instantly informs central control of a bed's status varying from: occupied; pending discharge; clean status; ready to be allocated and allocation. Patients are given electronic wristbands which are placed in a dropbox when they leave, immediately alerting the Care Co – ordination Centre. Thanks to the new tech, it takes just 40 minutes to move someone from an emergency department to an available bed in a seperate ward. Waiting time has also reduced by one-and-a-half hours on average and a bed's turnover time is now as little as 60 minutes. MTW is now hoping to roll the system out to smaller community hospitals and is working with Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust ( KCHFT ) in making sure the transition goes smoothly. So far it has sped up patients being transferred from the acute hospitals into community ones, through the use of electronic referrals and increased bed visability. On average, the trust now completes more than 3,000 patients transfers per month. MTW is also able to perform more planned operations per day thanks to the system and is one of only a handful of trusts in the country where no patient waits more than a year for an elective procedure. Nurses have also reportedly reclaimed 2,290 hours a month which can be better focused on care duties. The technology was implemented in the hopes of tackling the number of long stays in hospitals -
anything longer than 21 days – which can lead to other serious health issues for patients, especially of an older generation. Nick Sinclair, director of central operations at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, said: “The expansion of Tele-Tracking into our community hospitals will provide numerous benefits to patients and the broader healthcare system in Kent.'

ie, scampi&chips or burger&chips including entertainment, which she was of course up for it, so just something to think about to help the cause.
