Lesser Known Monsters has been on my wishlist for quite some time and I finally succumbed to its call 😂 Described as twelve unforgettable tales, the strange is made familiar and the familiar made strange. A girl growing wings on her legs feels like an ordinary rite of passage, while a bug-infested house becomes becomes an impossible, Kafkaesque nightmare. This collection blurs the boundaries of the real and fantastic, offering intricate and surprising insights into human nature. Abandon is my latest @tiltedaxisbooks buy in my quest to acquire them all. Translated by Arunava Sinha, this is a powerful novel about a woman who runs away from home, seeking to free herself from the shackles of society and familial attachments, and instead devote her attentions to writing a novel. When she realises her five year old son has followed her, she struggles with her identity and responsibilities as a mother versus the guilty knowledge that she cannot want her own child when his existence required her to suppress her own dreams. Finally, look at that cover of The Melting! Translated by Kristen Gehrman, this book asks the question “what if you could take revenge on an entire village?” That’s all I need to know! { 3⭐ This a really good coming of age following 5 girls that meet at Camp Forevermore and where they all go through something. Now that "something" is the only thing that connects this girl, and my biggest complain is that this read a lot more like a short story collection than a novel. Now if it had been marketed as such, it would've gotten a higher rating, but now it feels like the author just wanted to insert as many ideas as she could in this one book even if they didn't make sense together. The night before Christmas Eve, I couldn’t sleep. So I got up and started #thelostgirlsofcampforevermore by #kimfu. By morning, I was finished! Bad news: didn’t sleep. Good news: 52 BOOKS COMPLETE! . ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ . In a novel that is a Lumberjanes meets Lord of The Flies, 5 young girls go to sleep away camp. The capstone of the first week is an overnight kayaking trip to one of the many islands off the coast of Washington State. While they make it to their island alright, the counselor assigned to their group dies in her sleep and the kayaks wash away leaving them stranded on an island with limited food, water, and no way of contacting camp. Together they make it through the night, but the experience shapes each one’s life. . With alternating chapters allowing the story of survival and how it effected each of the 5 girls throughout their life, brilliant and complex portraits of each of the girls was drawn. Insights into why each girl acted the way she did in the face of crisis, along with how her life progressed after were amazing to watch unfold. The book as a whole is light on plot, but heavy on character development.
