Oh God. Exactly. How come I feel like I'm crazy for hating the MV Arc and also the "dark equals mature" part. No one said that about shadow's game they just called it Edgy. While the MV Arc. Is Exactly that it's just Edgy and people like it? (Anon tangent done)
This is why, despite agreeing with the opinion that uwu coffee shop AUs tend to simplify, wimpify, or just plain paint an inaccurate picture of the characters, it similarly bugs me when it's used as an excuse to write off everything that's remotely light or chill altogether. These two extremes apply to many fandoms for franchises with similar tones, but it's especially in-your-face with Sonic's... like usual.
It's a pet peeve of mine because it's what leads to shit like the zombot arc, and all its "OMG they're finally taking Sonic seriously!" acclaim despite how shallow and childish it truly was. I've never given ShtH or '06 a pass on it, and while SA2 isn't terrible, I'm not afraid to criticise aspects of that one that I find a bit on the dodgy side in execution... so why should I give this one a pass? And in fairness to the mentioned games, at least they gave us some legit good moments (and Ow the Edge in the case of ShtH). Zombot arc on the other hand...
Then you had Flynn and the fandom backpedal in the face of criticism towards later arcs with "it's for kids, don't take it seriously", even through they spent forever going on about how dark, how mature, and thus, how Kwality Khantent the zombot arc was. This level of hypocrisy steams my hams so fucking much.
But anyway, point being, aside from wanting Eggman's credibility to be treated legitimately regardless of the overall tone, I otherwise don't care whether a story is light or dark. I just want it to be good, to have a compelling vision, to utilise characters that aren't terrible, and to fit in decently for this franchise one way or the other.
