Summary: Meetings are twice as insufferable now. It doesn’t matter if it’s over the phone, over Zoom, or in-person. Stewy slips in the odd innuendo as he asks about the pros and cons of a media plan.
Tumblr media
It starts with Grant.
It’s not that you’ve avoided telling him about being with Stewy, it just hasn’t…Come up.
“Guess who asked to grab drinks,” Stewy says as you unload the takeout for that night’s dinner.
“Colbert?”
Stewy chuckles before correcting: “Grant.”
You go still for just a moment before setting down a container of white rice.
“You gonna go?” You ask.
“Thought I would, yeah.”
“Okay.” Then, before you can stop yourself, “You gonna fuck him?”
You feel more than see the way Stewy turns to look at you. You can imagine his expression—lips twisted into an intrigued smile, brows tipping skyward as he watches and waits for you to say something else. You stay carefully quiet, beginning to sort through the sauce packets.
“Do you want me to fuck him?” Stewy asks after a moment.
“Why would I want that?”
“I don’t know. Sometimes you feel bad when your friends aren’t gettin’ any.”
“Oh, please,” You scoff. “This is not that. I’m just asking, ‘cause…I don’t know, you two seemed pretty into each other in Vegas.”
“He’s hot.”
“Yeah, he is.”
“Does he bottom?”
“You’d have to ask him, though I’m stunned that didn’t come up between the two of you before.”
“...Are you seriously sorting the duck sauce and soy sauce into different piles?”
“I like to be organized.”
You glance toward Stewy, and find him watching you with the stunned little look you thought he’d have. You sigh softly, looking down at the piles of sauce packets.
“Look, fuck him, don’t fuck him, whatever you wanna do. Just…”
“You wanna know if I do?”
“Yeah. Just…You know.”
“You don’t think he’d tell you if we did?”
“I dunno…Probably? I haven’t told him yet.”
“About?”
“This,” You wave a finger between the two of you.
“Oh, I see,” Stewy teases, sidling up beside you. “Are we engaging in a clandestine affair?”
“You’re such…” You start to call Stewy an asshole, but you stop, considering. He’s just teasing you; he’s not being mean about it.
“Such?” Stewy asks.
“A ham,” You insist softly. You reach up, pulling him in for a gentle kiss. Stewy hums, pleased, and wraps his arm around your middle.
“What were you gonna say?” He asks knowingly.
“Something mean and unwarranted.”
“Nice catch.”
“Uh-huh.”
“...Douche-canoe?”
“Oh, nothing nearly as fun as that.”
--
The text you get from Grant after he sees Stewy is fairly straightforward:
I FUCKING KNEW IT BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
--
Michael finding out is a complete accident.
You’ve been working up to public affection with Stewy. It’s a little hard for it to be a ramping and not simply a launch. Stewy is so easily casually affectionate, quick to touch your arm, your shoulder, your waist; to drop a peck to your cheek or neck or lips; to cuddle up against you in line and make fun of the fellow patrons in murmured tones.
So you suppose that Michael’s finding out is sort of…inevitable. You blame yourself, honestly. You’ve started to relax, you’ve loosened up. You don’t look over your shoulder when you’re out in public with Stewy anymore. You let yourself get caught up in him.
So you don’t think anything of it when he turns you on line at Starbucks and leans in for a kiss. You do think, for a moment, that you’ve become the sort of gooey, dopey couples that annoy the shit out of you—the ones that are lovey-dovey in public, that feed each other off of their forks and use disgusting pet names like cuddlechops and gigglepuss.
“What was that for?” You mumble as Stewy leans away just a little.
“Why’s it have to be for anything?” Stewy counters, turning his head and pressing a kiss to your cheek. You huff a soft laugh through your nose, giving his arm a squeeze to spur him on as the line moves forward.
“I thought that was you,” You hear. Your heart sinks into your stomach as you turn to see Michael standing in front of you at the line. If Stewy is at all concerned, he doesn’t let it show. He just curls his arm around your waist with a smile, greeting, “Hey, Mikey.”
Michael is smiling mirthlessly, his eyes narrowed critically at you. You feel about an inch tall under his scrutiny.
“Can we get your coffee?” Stewy adds, nodding toward the counter as you inch closer.
“By ‘we’, he means him,” You clarify.
“Won’t even spring for coffee?”
“They don’t pay me enough to spring for three of these, Stew.”
“Don’t get my coffee, just tell me what the hell is happening,” Michael says, waving his fingers between the two of you.
“What’s it look like? We’re getting breakfast,” Stewy answers breezily before stepping up to the counter as the person ahead of you steps away. Before Michael can ask again, Stew glances back and asks you, “Your usual, babe?”
“Uh-huh.” You fold your arms across your chest, glancing nervously at Michael. His face is twisting in confusion and shock.
“Mikey, sure you don't want anything?” Stewy adds. Michael just raises his hand, scrubbing his hands across his eyes as he turns to leave.
“I’m getting a headache,” He mumbles.
--
You go into the office on tenterhooks. You wait for a boss to call you into an office somewhere, to make you aware of company ethics policies. You do get a glare from over the top of Michael’s laptop as you pass him on the way to your desk, but he says nothing. The two of you work together in moderately stony silence for most of the morning, hardly meeting one another’s eyes, or speaking unless it’s absolutely necessary.
You dread your 11 o’clock meeting with him and one of your other clients. The two of you sit across from one another, each working with laser-focus on your laptops as you wait for the client to dial in.
You’d typically just let the silence hold, and sit and wait, but you can’t bring yourself to now. You feel ready to crawl out of your skin with the tension.
“So?” You speak up. Michael’s eyes flicker to you, brows arching curiously. You swallow thickly before pressing: “Do you wanna talk about it?”
“Not really.”
“...Can we talk about it anyway?”
Michael sighs heavily, leaning back in his seat.
“Has this been going on since Vegas?” He asks.
“What? No!”
“You sure?”
“Why do you ask that?”
“The two of you were there together.”
“I swear to god, that was a coincidence.”
“When, then?”
“Uh…God, like…Four months ago?”
“Seems serious.”
“I mean…I guess.”
“You guess.”
“It hasn’t affected my work, it has not affected my contributions to their account—”
“Hell, I bet it’s made your work harder.”
“...C’mon.”
Michael rolls his eyes a little, turning back to his laptop.
“We’re even,” He mutters.
“What?”
“You didn’t tell them about me asking you to—You know. I won’t say anything about…You know. We’re even.”
“...I mean I’d say yours was worse…But thank you.”
Michael rolls his eyes, then springs into action as the client’s voice floats up from the muted conference phone.
--
“What’s going on up there?”
“...Hmm?”
Stewy presses a tender kiss to your temple, sliding his hand over your shoulder.
“Where are you?”
“I’m right here,” You laugh softly, tipping your head up to look at him.
“Your head is all over the place, baby.”
“...Yeah, a little. Sorry.”
“So?” Stewy asks.
“I don’t know, just…Running into Michael—”
“He say something to you?”
“We’re fine. That’s all fine.”
“You sure?”
“Totally fine.”
“Well you said ‘fine’ three times, so it must be true.”
“Don’t,” You groan softly, pulling yourself off of his couch.
“Don’t what!” Stewy laughs. “I’m asking a question. You’ve been distracted all night. I want attention.”
“So needy.”
“I can call Tiff over.”
You shoot Stewy an irritated look before reaching his bar cart.
“You want one?” You ask, holding up the bottle of scotch.
“See? That’s more like it.”
“Yes or no, Stewart.”
“Yes, and please.”
“Please, wow,” You mutter. “Good boy.”
“Careful, baby. I’m gonna get hard over here.”
“Shut up,” You chuckle, pouring Stewy two fingers worth. “Come and get it yourself, I’m still making my drink.”
“Why didn’t you pour mine right before you came back?”
“Cause I know you’re a lazy bastard and I estimate a minimum of six people have brought you drinks today, so come and get one for yourself.”
“How do you figure that?” He asks as he pushes himself off of the couch.
“Have you gotten your own coffee today?”
“...No.”
“How many did you have?”
“Four.”
“Aaaand did you have water at your office? The ones that come in those fancy-ass glass bottles?”
“...Uh-huh.”
“Two?”
“Do you have cameras installed in my office?”
“No, but that tells me that I’m right.” You give Stewy a cheeky smile as he comes to stand beside you. He leans against the counter beside you, watching you make your drink.
“...I talked to Michael today,” You admit.
“Sounds predictable, since you uh—you work together.”
“I mean I spoke to him about us.”
“And?”
“It was fine.”
“Fine again. So what’s got you all out of your head here?”
“I don’t know, I guess…” Your eyes train carefully as you fill your glass. “I guess…I’m just surprised that we’re still kinda doing this.”
“Being together?”
“Yeah.”
“Why?”
“Cause when we met, you drove me fucking nuts—Well, not exactly when we met, though you did piss me off during the presentation.”
“What! How’d I do that?”
“You fucking smirked, dude. I wanted to slap your stupid handsome face.”
“You can slap it now if you want.”
“Nah.”
“Why not?”
“You’d enjoy it too much.”
--
Meetings are twice as insufferable now. It doesn’t matter if it’s over the phone, over Zoom, or in-person. Stewy slips in the odd innuendo as he asks about the pros and cons of a media plan. It used to be a little irritating, but it’s so much worse now that Michael knows what’s going on. He was suspicious of you and Stewy’s interactions before. Now, all of the signs seem so much more obvious; he seems stunned that he missed them at all. You can’t help but notice the way he bites his tongue or rolls his eyes.
Stewy notices it, too.
--
“You’re no fun anymore.”
“Tell that to my sore jaw.”
“That’s not what I mean,” Stewy groans, pushing your hip to turn you over in bed. You go, settling on your side and tucking your hand under your head.
“What do you mean, then?”
“When we’re at work.”
“I can’t just give into every single goad you level at me.”
“You don’t give into any of them anymore. That used to be half the fun.”
“What was the other half?”
“Making money.”
“Well, you’re still doing that.”
“That’s true.”
“Small wonder.”
You smile as Stewy’s eyes flicker to your face.
“I’ll start being a bitch at work again, okay?”
“Thank you,” Stewy sighs, flopping back in bed.
“You’re such a big baby,” You mutter, reaching out and skimming your hand over his middle.
“...Michael’s over it,” He comments.
“Michael’s been over it. I think he’s been over it for a long time, you know. Before he really knew.”
You glance up and see Stewy’s brow furrowing as he repositions his head on the pillow to get a better look at you. You hesitate before adding:
“When you asked us to the bar on a Saturday, way back when, to talk about the strategy to take over ATN…He said that we’d been weird, and that he knew the difference between you flirting with someone and you fucking around with someone.”
“Which one did he think I was doing?”
“I don’t know,” You shake your head, “I shut the conversation down.”
Stewy is quiet for a moment, his eyes darting to the window as he hums thoughtfully.
“If you’re about to admit that this was all a She’s All That-esque bet, I’m gonna trash one of your bathrooms,” You add.
“What if I need that one?”
“You have two more.”
“That’s true. Go nuts.”
You smile, shaking your head and lowering your eyes to his chest.
“...Were you fucking with me?” You ask quietly.
“No.”
“Never?”
“Well, when you say fucking with you—”
“Oh, god.”
“No, c’mon,” Stewy pushes himself up to lean back against his elbows, and you shift back, eyeing him warily. “I didn’t fuck around like…For fun. I mean, watching steam come out of your ears like a looney tune, that’s one of my favorite things—”
“Great.”
“—But that’s like—I mean we fuck around with each other.”
“So you never did it just for fun.”
“...Look, was it immature, was it like pulling your pigtails on the playground? Yeah, a little. But you fuckin’ pulled mine, too.”
You consider and settle back onto the bed.
“That’s true.”
“Exactly.” Stewy slides down beside you, dropping a kiss to your neck and trailing them down to your breasts. You press up against his lips, running your fingers through his hair.
“Hey,” He murmurs.
“Mm?”
“I’ve got this conference that I need to go to next week.”
“Ugh, great. You gonna give me a key to get in here and drink all your alcohol and eat all your food?”
Stewy rolls off of the bed, walking over to his pants, and you frown, pushing yourself up onto your elbows and watching him rifle around in his pants pockets. Well—honestly, you pay more attention to his ass as he bends over, so you miss him throwing something under his arm and calling out, “Catch.”
You half-leap off of the bed, but your foot is tangled in the sheets. As you try to catch whatever it is, you topple onto the floor. You land on your ass in shock, but break out laughing, unable to help it even as Stewy runs around the bed to see if you’re alright.
“Are you okay?”
“Damn, Hosseini, warn a girl,” You laugh, looking up at him. “What the hell did you even throw?”
“You didn’t catch it?”
“I didn’t see where it went!”
“Oh, my god,” Stewy sits on the floor beside you, “Fuck, you’re awful. Did you hit your head?”
“I don’t think so.” You’re still giggling as you sit up, reaching up to unwrap the sheets from where they’re still wound around your foot and ankle. You glance at Stewy and find him gazing at you fondly.
“What!” You laugh, looking around, “What the hell was it, anyway? It was like…Tiny.”
“It wasn’t that small.”
Stewy looks around, frowning, before he leans forward, reaching out under the dresser.
“Got it?”
“I think so…It’s either that or a very cold, very long, very dead spider.”
“Fucking gross,” You mutter. Stewy leans back with something in his hand, and you watch him dust it off before he holds it up. Your eyes slide to it, but it takes a few moments for you to process what he’s holding out.
“...Where’d you get that?”
“From under the dresser,” Stewy deadpans. Your jaw works wordlessly for a moment, and when you take too long, Stewy takes hold of your hand and drops the key into it.
“...What’s this for?”
“For you to get in here and drink all of my alcohol and eat all of my food.”
“I wasn’t serious about that.”
“Well, I am.”
You look up at Stewy as he leans back against the bed.
“Since when?”
“Uh—Since I went to get the key made.”
“So it was a split-second decision?”
“Have you ever known me to make split-second decisions?”
“One word, Hosseini: Colbert.”
“That old excuse.” Stewy huffs a laugh through his nose before his eyes lower into his lap. “...Look, you don’t have to take it, but I want you to have it,” He admits.
You smile, getting up onto your knees and shuffling over to straddle Stewy’s thigh.
“Besides, I’ve seen your apartment,” Stewy adds, running his hands over your thighs. “I just think it would be nice for you to spend some more time in a place that isn’t, you know…A hovel.”
“Fuck, not this again.”
“I’m just–”
“Just because I don’t have central air–”
“Or a functioning kitchen. It’s like you live in the fuckin’ Stone Age.”
“So I shouldn’t make you a key to mine, too?”
“I mean it’d be a cute gesture.”
“Mm, but you wouldn’t use it.”
“Oh, I would. I’d order upgrades and let workmen in—You know what, make me two.”
“You know how I’ve been working on not unduly insulting you?”
“Uh-huh.”
“You’re a dickhead.”
Stewy grins, curling his arms around your waist.
“You wouldn’t have me any other way, baby.”

okay because I'm seeing some misinfo, here's the story on the Key Bridge collapse
What was the Key Bridge?
The Francis Scott Key Bridge (also called the Key Bridge, the Beltway Bridge, and the Outer Harbor Crossing) was steel-arch continuous-through-truss bridge spanning the Patapsco River south of the Baltimore Harbor. The bridge took 5 years to build and cost an estimated $145 million ($735 million in today's dollars). The full bridge project (including approaches) was 10.9 miles long, but the stretch over the Patapsco was 1.6 miles long and 4 lanes wide, and comprised a length of I-695, the Baltimore Beltway. It traveled between Hawkins Point and Dundalk, and in addition to the I-895 Harbor Tunnel was the primary way for Marylanders to cross from the Eastern Shore to the West. The bridge carried an estimated 11.5 million vehicles per year. There is a lane for ships to pass under the Key Bridge with enough clearance.
Was it structurally sound?
The bridge received its latest inspection in 2022 and received a 6/9 score, which is considered "fair" by federal standards. There was a concern with one of its columns, which was downgraded from a health index of 77.8 to 65.9, but it is not clear yet if this was one of the columns struck by the ship. In 1980 the bridge was struck by a different cargo ship which destroyed a concrete support structure, but the bridge itself was unharmed. There is as of yet no evidence that the bridge collapsed because of poor condition. Experts say the lesson to be learned is about the size and weight of modern cargo ships, and that the bridge was not to blame. Engineers have noted, however, that the bridge's piers lacked protective devices such as fenders.
What was the ship?
The MV Dali is a container ship flying the Singapore flag. It is owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd. and operated by Synergy Marine Group Ltd. The ship is currently being chartered by Maersk, a Dutch shipping company. It was built in 2015 by Hyundai. The ship is 980 feet long and 157 feet wide. The ship's gross tonnage (its internal volume) is 95,128 tons (190,256,000 pounds). Its deadweight (the weight of cargo it can carry) is 116,851 tons (233,702,000 pounds). The ship was carrying 3,000 containers. The engine is a MAN-B&W 9S90ME putting out 41,480 kilowatts (55,626 horsepower).
Over its lifetime the Dali has been inspected 27 times, and only 2 faults were ever found. On June 27, 2023 the Dali was held in port in Chile due to an issue with the propulsion system. According to an inspector the pressure gauges on the heating system were "unreadable". The fault was fixed before the ship left port.
The Dali is crewed by 22 Indian nationals including 2 maritime pilots.
What happened?
The Dali arrived at the Port of Baltimore on March 23, 2024. At 12:44 AM on March 26, 2024 the Dali left port, beginning its journey to Colombo, Sri Lanka. At 01:26 AM the ship suffered a "complete blackout" and began to drift out of the shipping lane. It is not yet known what caused the electrical failure. The backup generator did not power the propulsion system. At around 01:26 AM the crew of the Dali sent a mayday distress call to the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) informing them of the loss of power and that a collision with the Key Bridge was possible. The anchors were dropped as an emergency measure to attempt to slow or stop the vessel. At the request of one of the pilots traffic flow over the bridge was immediately halted. Black smoke was seen coming from the Dali, which experts believe was the result of the crew managing to restart the power system to regain some maneuvering capability.
At 01:28 AM the Dali, traveling at 8 knots (considered to be a fast speed) collided with a support strut beneath the Key Bridge's metal truss at the southwest end of the bridge. A Baltimore resident said he heard the collision and that it "felt like an earthquake". Emergency teams began receiving 911 calls at 01:30 AM, and the Baltimore Police Department were alerted at 01:35 AM. One of the officers present radioed that he was going to go onto the bridge to alert the construction crew as soon as a second officer arrived, but the bridge collapsed seconds later.
What was the damage?
The Key Bridge has completely collapsed. The metal truss relies on structural tension from the bridge itself to maintain its rigidity. As soon as one of the support columns was destroyed, the rest of the bridge quickly followed.
The damage to the Dali is reported as minimal. The ship was impaled by the bridge's structure above the waterline, but has maintained watertight integrity. The crew has not reported any water contamination from its 1.8 million gallons of marine fuel. 13 containers carrying potentially hazardous material were damaged, and are being inspected by a team of Coast Guard divers. At least 5 vehicles including 3 passenger cars and a cement mixer were detected underwater, but authorities do not believe they were occupied
Who was hurt?
The crew of the Dali reports no casualties, except one crewmember who was hospitalized for minor injuries. There was a crew of 8 construction workers on the Key Bridge filling in potholes. 2 were immediately pulled from the water by rescue crews, with 1 being rushed to emergency care and the other reporting minor injuries and refusing treatment. The hospitalized worker has since been discharged. 1 of those rescued was Mexican. The remaining 6 remain missing. Of those 6, 2 have been identified:
Miguel Luna from El Salvador
Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval from Honduras
Of the remaining 4, 2 are Guatemalan nationals. Neither have been identified, but the Guatemalan Foreign Affairs Ministry has stated that they were a 26-year-old from San Luis, Petén, and a 35-year-old from Camotán, Chiquimula. The other 2 are presumed to be Mexican.
Rescue Efforts
The Coast Guard was immediately deployed for search-and-rescue operations. Military Blackhawk helicopters were seen over the river. Rescue efforts were ended at 07:30 PM on March 26, 2024 due to darkness, fog, and cold temperatures. Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said "Based on the length of time that we've gone in the search, the extensive search efforts that we put into it, the water temperature -- at this point, we do not believe that we're going to find any of these individuals still alive". Recovery operations resumed at 07:30 AM on March 27, 2024 with all 6 workers presumed dead.
No divers have yet entered the water underneath the bridge. Supervisory Special Agent Brian Hudson of the FBI's Underwater Search and Evidence Response Team said "the debris field is pretty sizable and I know that’s why they’re hesitant to send divers down because some of the debris is still shifting, the heavy weight of the rocks". The FBI has deployed Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) equipped with cameras and SONAR.
Aftermath
At 05:08 AM on March 26, 2024 Transportation Secretary Pete Buttegiege posted on X (formerly Twitter):
"I’ve spoken with Gov. Moore and Mayor Scott to offer USDOT’s support following the vessel strike and collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge. Rescue efforts remain underway and drivers in the Baltimore area should follow local responder guidance on detours and response."
At 07:30 AM on March 27, 2024 President of the Maryland State Senate Bill Ferguson posted on X (formerly Twitter):
"Over 15,000 in the Balt region rely on daily operations at Port of Baltimore to put food on the table. Today, with Del. @LukeClippinger and colleagues representing Port, we are drafting an emergency bill to provide for income replacement for workers impacted by this travesty."
At around 09:40 AM on March 26, 2024 Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott declared a State of Emergency to take effect at 10:30 AM March 26, 2024, and to last 30 days. Baltimore's Emergency Operations Plan was put into effect.
More than 1,000 personnel from the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) have been deployed to assist with clearing the debris and rebuilding efforts. President Joe Biden has pledged that the federal government will pay for the entire reconstruction of the bridge.
Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has recovered the Dali's data recorder, and will be inspecting both the Key Bridge and the Dali to determine the cause of the crash and the collapse. She says the investigation could take up to 2 years to complete.
Was it intentional?
According to William DelBagno, head of the FBI's Baltimore field office: "There is no specific or credible information to suggest there are ties to terrorism in this incident".
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said: "There are no indications this was an intentional act".
At least 3 people have been killed in accidents related to ships operated by Synergy in the past 6 years. In 2018 a person on board a Synergy ship in Australia was killed in an accident relating to the vessel's personnel elevator. In 2019 an officer aboard a Synergy vessel in Singapore fell overboard while performing maintenance. In 2023 at least one sailor was killed when a Synergy ship collided with a dredging ship in the Philippines. In the first two cases safety inspectors noted that proper safety procedures had not been adhered to.

I am happy to announce that i won an Award for my color key work on TMNT Mutant Mayhem from the Concept Art Association at Lightbox Expo this past weekend! I’ve included some of my work and a clip of my silly speech. Awards are a silly thing, they can often be arbitrary, the only people that care are the people who are nominated 😂 but i’m feeling very validated anyway💚🥷🐢

We need to talk about the worst thing about making AUs....
The fact that then when you inevitably think about crossovers you don't want the crossover with the canon you want it with your specific AU. Your brain worms, your circus, but THEN WHAT?
Oh, yeah, to understand this crossover you need to go read this entirely different fic/series? Girl help 😭 you can't do that

I thought I'd never see
Inspired by the breathtaking fic save the undone years by Whitherward @whatanybodygets which is an AU about Kaz and Inej during WW1 where Kaz is a soldier and Inej is a nurse. This moment that stuck with me:
“All this waiting, and his brother appears at his bedside like a ghost in the night. [...] [Captain Reitveld] simply drops onto the edge of Kaz’s mattress and yanks him forward by the shoulders, wrapping him into a tight hug.
She sees Kaz go tense for a moment, and then relax, bury his face into his brother’s shoulder.
And then he begins to sob."

Been working on this for a month. I can't put into words how beautiful of a writer she is. I am always in awe and must drop everything for it.
Bonus: process

"now, doesn't that look nice?" [insp]
#*chanting* skask skask skask skask-#vincent aurelius lin#adamandi#hello. let's talk about what's going on here! i've been tossing the idea about here wrt skin translucency ever since that post came out#(it's linked above fyi. but to quote it.) 'attempting to pursue this unachievable white ideal of the young academic; maybe leading to gory#representations of mimicry; replacement; taking on someone else's skin; altering the self'#this is primarily key in vincent and the skask; in the actual show iirc they used a jockey mask or smth? but i was thinking about the#delightful way skin is semi-transparent. and so a literal layer of skin alone would be unlikely to provide the whiteness pursued-#the under layer of the original tone would be there. so smth about the failure and unattainable.#additionally; at this point of the show the skin would have been likely yellowing or greying due to post-mortem development? so even more#Not white. from observations (as a kid;comparing skin tones?) white people have a pinker undertone (this might be. a generalisation but.)#here the lighting is yellowish to further push the difference + give the super harsh lighting that if you suspend disbelief has some hair#appear as blonde to further the ambrose-ness.#also the hair- messier on the non-ambrose side; a reference to the whole monologue about the haircuts they got#we bring to you also another episode of <i like drawing fabric folds> in the jacket symbolism! from bottom right to top left; it tracks#vincent throughout act two: the initial long jacket for standing out (nonchalance?) at ardess is removed; the yellow coat is put on- aided#here by ambrose's ghost which is represented by the hand! (it is very very slightly transparent- you can see the jacket pattern through it)#(if you look close) and then the satchel goes over it; this mimics the clothes in <oh ms reporter>#and then the Actual Ambrose jacket goes above along with the skask; following the outfit from the pyre scene at the end.#the spark/star thing is partially foreshadowing for the upcoming stabby eye trauma thing (@quincy) and partially just so i could highlight#the eye of the mask/ the place where vincent's eye probably is Behind the mask. because i liked the idea of merging faces; intersection.#back to the translucency of skin - you can kind of make out where the rest of his face is from the darker bit? aka it's not the same colour#as the skask. smth smth limited effectiveness...#tldr? face skin. jacket skin. altering appearance over time; unfeasibleness#when i was doing this i suddenly remembered covering my skin in talcum powder as a kid... hm. i'd forgotten about that.#anyways! when i posted my first ever adamandi thing i had the thought of 'this musical makes me want to paint' and surreally enough#that has proved to be so so true. and ngl i am really enjoying it? love it when the motivation to create is there haha#i will add as a disclaimer that i'm literally chinese and if the colours look off.. i did not mean to make a caricature. please be nice#that said because stage lighting tends to shift colours about a Lot i essentially used my own skin as a reference under yellow light?#so hopefully that checks out. <disappears>

I saw you answer an ask on Toy Story, which was super interesting, and also say:
"It’s an incredibly good movie series. Not Toy Story 4. But the rest of the series."
I didn't actually see Toy Story 4 because I felt the first three tied the story up very well, and we got a really good arc through those first three. It just felt unnecessary, and what I did see from it didn't make me eager to go out and watch it.
Could you expand on where you think Toy Story 4 goes wrong? If the other three convey selflessness, living and finding purpose, then what does that Toy Story 4 try to convey? Does it contradict the others?
I think Toy Story 4 goes wrong by trying to make Woody selfish. I mean, you could say that he isn't selfish to leave Bonnie and his friends and embrace the "Lost Toy" lifestyle. You could say "he just went from taking care of one kid who didn't really need him anymore to taking care of every lost kid who could need him, and finding lost toys homes. That's what was happening with the lost little girl at the end!"
Okay, you could say all that, but you'd be wrong, because 1) that is not what was happening at the end. And 2) even if it were, that is not a selfless ending for Woody. Furthermore 3) it undoes all his character development and progression from the first three.
You didn't see the fourth movie, right? So let me break it down a little.
Woody's character progression goes like this:
1: Obsessed with being The Most Important Toy to Andy --> Remembering that what's great about being a toy is being there for Andy when he needs them, regardless of how often or special that is.
2: Fine with no longer being The Most Important Toy to Andy, but considering leaving because Andy will eventually not need him, ever --> Realizing that being there means being there, even if it's just to watch and love from a distance, instead of protecting yourself to no end.
3. Committed to Being There even if he's not needed --> But this includes being there for his friends, even after they choose to abandon him and the mission. (It's important to note that Woody only offers ((by getting in the box to Bonnie's)) to leave Andy if Andy chooses to give him to a kid who needs him more.)
Tumblr media
The whole idea is that Woody belongs to someone. He's not his own. He's a toy. Toys belong to their kid; they don't have the right to just leave. If they did, they'd be bad toys. Because you never know how much a kid will be heartbroken, or whether or not they might need you down the road. Every movie before Toy Story 4 is Woody doubting that, but then coming back to it. That's why in Toy Story 3, when everyone is in Andy's Room sad because he won't play with them and he's about to leave, Woody is totally onboard with staying in the Attic for years—because maybe they'll get to be played with by Andy's kids. He's loyal, and selfless, because he knows he's not his own. He's willing to go to Bonnie only because it'll mean staying with his friends where they're needed; but ONLY if ANDY willingly gives them up.
Tumblr media
Enter Toy Story 4.
Woody's having a hard time adjusting to Bonnie's Room because 1) he doesn't get played with, his role in the games is taken by Jessie. So he's right back where he was in the first movie, stuck in a closet watching another toy get played with. And 2) Dolly is the leader of the room, so he's not even really allowed to be helpful to his friends during their off hours, because she's got that covered. So he feels directionless.
UNTIL Bonnie goes to school for the first time. She's not allowed to bring toys. Dolly is fine with this but Woody goes anyway because he's sure Bonnie will need something.
And in this beautiful first portion of character development for Woody, he does not sneak out of the backpack and get Bonnie to gain comfort from him, her one and only toy, at daycare. Even though he totally could've. He could've seized his moment in her heart. But he didn't. Because he already learned that lesson in Toy Story 1-3: he doesn't need to be everything to the kid. He just needs to do what's best for the kid, and to do that, he has to be there.
So instead he throws her a bunch of craft supplies to play with when nobody sits with her. She gets distracted by making Forky, a toy made from a spork and some pipe cleaner.
Tumblr media
Bonnie is, from that moment on and throughout the rest of the movie, without exception, OBSESSED with Forky. There is no other toy in her mind. But Forky is a lot like Buzz was in the first movie after learning he's a toy: he doesn't understand what's so great about that, and would rather go back to being trash. He keeps trying to jump in garbage cans while Bonnie's family takes a road trip. And for some inexplicable reason, none of the other toys really care about this. But Woody, knowing what Bonnie needs, basically posts a 24-hour suicide watch on Forky and keeps pulling him back over to Bonnie, out of the trash.
The problem is, Woody isn't that excited about this. He is just doggedly resigned to it as his duty. He keeps rescuing Forky and getting no love in return; Buzz sort of tries to be supportive and offer to help, but nobody else seems to care about Bonnie and Forky, and Woody thinks this is his only way to be useful so he really doesn't want their help.
Which is stupid. Because if he were really committed to being selfless and loving Bonnie, he'd let everyone help. Because the point isn't "how will I feel if I fail to do this on my own? What's my purpose?" That's selfish. It's "you-focused." The point should be "How can we get this job done best for Bonnie?" with no consideration of "self." That would be selfless, which is the point of Toy Story movies.
Anyway. I'll speed up.
Basically by Act 2 Forky comes to understand (thanks to Woody) how great it is to be a toy. But no sooner does he want to go back to Bonnie (on the road trip) than Woody suddenly gets distracted. His whole life's mission of doing what's good for his kid is derailed because he finds Bo Peep again. Meanwhile, Forky is captured by a villainous antique doll with no voice box, who is fixated on being bought by a little girl and thinks that if she had Woody's voice box her dreams would come true.
Tumblr media
Bo Peep has been living as a Lost Toy. Basically the movie sets this up as if Lost Toys take care of each other, patching up injuries and having fun together even when no kids are around: they're just doing the same sort of thing that the reformed toys at Sunnyside Daycare do. But in a playground/fairground setting.
Bo Peep doesn't want to be with one kid. She wants to keep doing this more selfish lifestyle, where she can be played with whenever she wants, help toys whenever she wants, and avoid the heartbreak of a kid abandoning her.
Understandable.
But thats the opposite of everything Woody's learned in the last three (and a half) movies. He could've made the decision Bo Peep is making at any point in Andy's childhood. But he's already learned that being there means Being There, regardless of what the kid can do for you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, I hate to point it out, because I know people will try to make it an allegory for "staying in an abusive situation," even though that's NOT what I'm saying, but seriously—think back to Sid's House in the very first movie. They don't lead all the broken toys to a life of freedom. They force Sid to be a better kid, but the broken toys stay there. Because they're Sid's Toys.
Contrast that with the "hardship" Bo Peep has been through...Bo Peep just...got pawned off. She didn't have body parts removed and sewn onto other toys. She didn't get strapped to a firework or melted down. But she's treated like this revolutionary, independent, strong-woman toy who's introducing this great concept of freedom to Woody.
That's all wrong for Woody. And for most of the movie, he resists it, so that's good.
But what it comes down to, at the end, is Woody deciding to choose what he wants over his ideals of selflessness and loyalty. He wants to stay with Bo Peep (because romance) and he wants to be needed. Lost Kids and Toys "need" him more than Bonnie.
Tumblr media
To be fair, they try to build up to this in a way that makes sense for his character. They try really hard, they do. They show that Woody is still selfless when it comes to the happiness of kids and toys; he willingly gives up his voice box so that Forky can go back to Bonnie, and the doll villainess can have a shot at her dream. They show that he's ready to support that villainess and help her find a kid she could be true to even after the kid she wanted rejects her. They show that he really was going to leave Bo, even at the very end, even though he didn't want to—and it takes Buzz insisting that Bonnie will "be all right" without him for Woody to give it all up.
They do try.
But that's the thing. The only way they could set up Woody's decision to abandon his friends and his kid for life as a Lost Toy was by centering it around this idea of "where I'm needed."
But 1) "where I'm needed" is too self-focused for Woody, because of all the reasons in Toy Story 2 and 1, and 2) you can't have it both ways. You can't say Woody's all about "where he can be of service best" and all about "what he wants." Those two focuses contradict one another, in Woody's case.
That's what it boils down to. They took the characters that are literally made to say, "live your life for others, love regardless of whether or not you're loved back," and they try to say, "nooo, actually, that's toxic, you have to do what you want, what feels most fulfilling to you, self-care, etc." And they do their best to shoehorn Woody into that by saying "what he's most fulfilled by is being needed."
That's all wrong for Toy Story. Woody developed away from making all his decisions based on where he's "needed" in Toy Story 2. Woody expressed loyalty to both Andy and his friends perfectly in Toy Story 3 by putting himself in Bonnie's box and letting Andy decide, his owner decide, where he should be.
Tumblr media
And then Toy Story 4 comes along and says, "No, Woody gets to decide, and he decides where he's needed, and he's fine with separating from not only his kid, but his friends."
This post is already too long but also, if you try to spin it so Woody's still in-character and selfless by helping Lost Toys find kids, it starts to make no sense. If the Lost Toy lifestyle is so great, because you can pick up playtime with kids and put it back down whenever you feel like it—and you should, because kids will always get older and throw you out—why should Woody ever help Lost Toys find a kid to go home with? Why wouldn't he say, like Bo, "hey that's nice but eventually they'll grow up, it's a dead-end, just stay out in this playground with us. That's what's best for you. Be a Lost Toy like us."
The only possible answer to that question, which IS supposedly Woody's fulfilling ending, is, "Because maybe some toys just 'want' to go home with one kid. And if they do, they should be allowed to do what they want. And Woody can help them, because helping them is what he wants."
Allll back to "what YOU want" which is the opposite of being a toy. Anyway. The horse is dead, I'll quit beating it.
