Single Review: Lyle Lovett - “12th of June” (Alternate Versions)
Lyle Lovett was so enamored with “12th of June,” he made it the title track of his 2022 LP.
A year after the fact, the song is back as a double-A-side single with alternate versions; one featuring a who’s-who of Americana music - Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan, Viktor Krauss, Bryan Sutton, Keith Sewell and Luke Bulla - and a sparser rendition with just Krauss, Sewell and Bulla.
Both iterations of the now-bluegrass - it was more country before - ballad are lovely. But fewer musicians are more in this case, allowing the vocal harmonies come to the fore on the latter as Lovett and his compatriots sing of the day the songwriter’s twins were born:
youtube
By the branch at San Jacinto/play for me a happy tune/know of all the days I loved/I loved best the 12th of June
With three versions now out, Lovett seems to feel the same about “12th of June” as well.
Grade card: Lyle Lovett - “12th of June” (Alternate Versions) - B/A

Greta Garbo and John Gilbert in Queen Christina (Rouben Mamoulian, 1933) Cast: Greta Garbo, John Gilbert, Ian Keith, Lewis Stone, Elizabeth Young, C. Aubrey Smith, Reginald Owen, Georges Renavent, David Torrence, Gustav von Seyffertitz, Ferdinand Meunier. Screenplay: H.M. Harwood, Salka Viertel, Margaret P. Levino, S.N. Behrman. Cinematography: William H. Daniels. Production design: Edgar G. Ulmer. Film editing: Blanche Sewell. Costume design: Adrian. Music: Herbert Stothart. A year later, with the Production Code in full enforcement, this would have been a very different movie, and probably not a better one. It certainly wouldn't have shown Christina (Greta Garbo) and Antonio (John Gilbert) sharing a room, not to mention a bed, in an inn. It probably wouldn't have suggested so strongly that before Antonio became her lover, Christina had a thing going with Countess Ebba (Elizabeth Young), and almost certainly wouldn't have had Christina kiss Ebba on the mouth. Unfortunately, those little touches of mild naughtiness are pretty much all Queen Christina has going for it, especially if you're looking for some faint resemblance to historical fact. But maybe Garbo is enough. She certainly gives this pseudo-historical melodrama more commitment than it deserves. It was her fourth film with Gilbert, their only talkie, and their last. At least it dispels the myth that Gilbert failed to make the move into sound films because of his voice, which is perfectly fine -- the real reason was alcoholism, which made him unemployable and destroyed his health. The number of uncredited hands that worked on the screenplay, including Ben Hecht, Ernest Vajda, Claudine West, and director Rouben Mamoulian, suggests that it became a problem no one ever quite solved. Today, it is mostly remembered for the final shot of Garbo alone at the prow of a ship that is taking her away from Sweden. The story has it that Mamoulian directed her to empty her mind and think of nothing during the long closeup, to allow audiences to project their own emotions on her character.

i realised that on my last reblog i forgot some things! also i was forced to omit a few things bc i ran out of tag space oops ("nobody cares, lamorna" - shut up i need to document this correctly)
so let's explain:
saw belinda lang in present laughter (also saw serena evans in that!! and david from cold feet robert bathurst, but he's less important to me); the reluctant debutante (also saw jane asher in it!!); and single spies
old times: met kristin scott thomas, saw lia williams + rufus sewell
the audience: met helen mirren + haydn gwynne (this was also the day when i chased jenny agutter accidentally, and i saw anne reid + stephen tompkinson going through the stage door)
passion play: met sam bond, zoe wanamaker, and lyndsey marshal (she wasn't in the play, she was just there with zoe), saw owen teale
the weir: saw dervla kirwan, met ardal o'hanlon + brian cox
private lives: met anna chancellor
the importance of being earnest: met cherie lunghi + nigel havers
relatively speaking (i went to an ayckbourn play for felicity. this is true love and dedication) met felicity kendal
the national theatre masterclasses: went to penelope wilton + david hare's one, saw them (saw penelope out front beforehand!!), met penelope afterwards
also went to amelia bullmore's masterclass, along w lots of my lovely mutuals 💖; we all met her and talked to her at length
kiss me, kate: saw hannah waddingham
guys and dolls: saw sophie thompson, and phyllida law (her + emma's mother) was in the audience
a damsel in distress: saw summer strallen
mrs. pat: saw penelope keith
oklahoma!: saw josie lawrence (also saw her + paul merton at the comedy store one time)
me and my girl: saw caroline quentin, also matt lucas
fleetwood mac: i've seen them live twice, once with chris mcvie
once there was an event that a choir my mum + i used to be in were invited to sing at, and a lot of the other performers / organisers were famous people: julie graham was one of the organisers, so i saw her, alison moyet was performing (i'd already been to one of her concerts, but not met her yet), so i met her then (she hugged me!!!!) and emma kennedy was there bc she and alf are best friends so i stood near her awkwardly; and caitlin moran was also a speaker so i saw her (backstage and onstage) too; and my mum spoke to her
my mum once won tickets to see a bbc show being filmed, and it happened to be upstart crow (you don't choose what you see, you just get allocated something by the bbc people), so we were on set with david mitchell, liza tarbuck, gemma whelan
i've told the story of being caught in the fire w the new tricks actors + sarah beeny SO many times, but i will tell it again if anyone else wants to hear it
comedians/-ennes i've seen live: ed byrne (twice), alan davies, omid djalili, rich hall (i wasn't that keen on seeing omid or rich but my mum made us all go with her and they were better than i'd expected them to be), zoe lyons, tim vine
and finally: i live in the same town as dave benson phillips (of get your own back, british blue's clues, various other children's television), and he used to be (might still be, for all i know) the next door neighbour of a family friend, so i met him at a party at their house once as a child

Monash University’s virtual pharmacy platform: MyDispense
Why is Monash University Pharmacy School so world-renowned?
Well, not only is Monash University ranked #1 in the world and #1 in Australia (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022), but also their online pharmacy simulation MyDispense has experienced exponential growth since the beginning of the pandemic, enabling tens of thousands of pharmacy students worldwide to develop and practice their dispensing skills throughout remote learning.Learn more about studying at Monash Pharmacy School (Image credit: MyDispense, Monash University)
In January 2020, MyDispense had accumulated 16,000 student accounts since its inception in 2011. In the last two years, this number has nearly tripled to 42,300 student accounts.
The number of partner universities has also significantly increased, from 79 universities in January 2020, to 208 today. The strongest period of growth was between January and December 2020 which led to 90 new university partners in just 11 months.
What is MyDispense?
Developed by Monash University‘s Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, MyDispense is a free service that has been customized for 10 different regions. Some of the countries using the tool include Germany, South Africa, Sweden, Somalia, Pakistan, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Nepal and many more. There has been a particularly notable surge in users based in the Philippines and Sweden.
Monash Learning Technologies Project Manager Keith Sewell said MyDispense is designed to provide a safe environment in which students can hone their dispensing skills, but also make mistakes without experiencing the serious consequences of practicing in the real world.
“Students get to have the full dispensing experience, from initial communication with the patient and prescriber, right through to providing professional advice when handing medicine to patients, and the whole experience is completely online,” said Mr Sewell.
“Early in 2020 it quickly became evident that there was going to be strong global demand for access to MyDispense to help pharmacy students continue to develop important dispensing skills throughout lockdowns and campus closures.
“It was a lot of work for the team, but from the outset the purpose of MyDispense has been to share the platform for free with our pharmacy peers around the world, so it has been wonderful to see so many students benefit from it since COVID emerged just over two years ago.”
The MyDispense environment utilizes virtual representations of patients, barcodes, labels, and products. There is no requirement for a physical space with label printers and shelves full of empty product boxes. This means that pharmacy students have no restrictions on their access to dispensing exercises.
Almost 1.5 million exercises and activities have been completed in MyDispense by students all over the world since 2011. The 1 million exercises completed milestone was hit in December 2020, highlighting that usage growth is continuing to increase.
