Higurashi: Eye-Opening Chapter 13

The chapter opens with Shion taking two calls. One from Kimiyoshi and the other from Kasai. In Cotton-Drifting, Kimiyoshi went missing the night after the festival, so we can guess what is likely going to happen in a future chapter.

Shion's conversation with Kasai is one of those moments that drives her into the isolation that the curse-bearers always go into. She told him about what Takano and Tomitake did and was relieved he thought it was far-fetched. But then Kasai readily accepted that. He's not willing to oppose whoever has been killing people. And he's not going to protect her if she is targeted for entering the Saiguden.

Shion's life is completely forfeit. She's dead no matter what, so she's going to commit to her path. No matter how great or petty her crimes, she will suffer the same end. Dropping that half-filled glass on the floor is just her showing how petty she will be.

And here's the reveal of the big twist of Cotton Drifting: "Mion" from chapter 7 and on was actually Shion the whole time. So everything she said about the curse or the Sonozakis in that arc can be thrown out.

And I have to really credit Yutori Houjou's consistency with the classroom and outside scenes between this chapter and Cotton Drifting chapter 7.

During the group study, Keiichi, Rena, and "Mion" were sitting together such that Keiichi and "Mion" were looking at each other and Rena was to Keiichi's right and "Mion"'s left. And while we don't get a shot like that here, Shion's perspective indicates that's still the case.

With a few context clues, it's also possible to estimate roughly where Satoko and Rika were sitting in relation to the group and Shion would have been able to look directly at Rika as well.

In Cotton Drifting chapter 7, Keiichi turns to his right to yell at Satoko and Satoko turns to her left to face him. So if we treat the direction Keiichi was originally facing as forward, then Satoko was facing the direction to his right.

And Rika was sitting to Satoko's right and facing toward her left, which would be the same forward direction Keiichi was facing. Since Shion was sitting across from Keiichi, she would be able to see anything behind him, including Rika's face.

And the conversation Shion and Keiichi have is nearly word-for-word exact in these two chapters. There are a few lines from Cotton-Drifting that are missing here, but it's an almost perfect recreation. So good job Alethea and Athena Nibley for translating these chapters.

And again, Shion is jumping to conclusions about things. Yes, Mion did ask Keiichi if he'd seen Shion after the festival. No, she didn't ask about the Saiguden. She probably just didn't want to find out Keiichi was hanging out with Shion.

But now Shion is just lying in wait to find Person X who's been enacting the Sonozakis' will these last several years. It is an effort doomed to fail because we've already seen this story from Keiichi's perspective. No one ever comes after him.

And the only person who actually knows Keiichi snuck into the Saiguden is Shion.

...and Rika. She was the only person in Cotton Drifting who actually confronted Keiichi about entering the Saiguden. Everyone else only confronted him about his connections to Tomitake and Takano.

My Dumb Thoughts on Higurashi- Onikakushi

The first of my Higurashi Reactions I started on Reddit, now with GIFS! These are basically the notes I put down of my thoughts after each chapter.( I'm not sure if long posts like this are seen as okay, so I may break up the later chapters for readability) [also spoilers for Onikakushi, obviously]

Oh, and before I begin, I read the main five in the following voices:

Rena and Keiichi: higher and lower versions of my own voice

Satoko: heavy enunciation

Mion: Peni Parker's Sonic voice

Rika: Cherami Leigh's voice for Sunako in Shiki

any other voice, I'll say when they show up. With that, let's begin!

Well, that was an uncomfortable opening

Ch 1-1

Honestly the fact Keiichi’s mom has no sprite way more unnerving than it should be

Keiichi, you’re gross. Stop that

Oh hi Rika, I can’t wait for you to murder me and/or Satoko and for it to be like big sad.

Tip about the uniforms: ah, either Mion’s relatives are part of some sort of criminal underground, or this is a pervert thing.

Ch 1-2

Ch 1-8

Two events masquerading as one event. They’re evolving…

Welcome to the “Keiichi digs himself into a bigger hole” hour. I hope the conclusion of this game is him eventually learning to talk around the truth.

What Keiichi’s brain feels like:

Okay Rika definitely knows as much if not more than everyone else.

Ch 1-12

Finished The Cotton Drifting Arc, it was my favourite the first time I watched higurashi, and was amazing on rewatch. I’m a Keiichi x Mion shipper and even though the final revolved around Shion, Keiichi’s actions I think really showed how much he cared about Mion.

But yeah

I think during the first timeline(In the Higurashi AU, Kevin is in the place of Keiichi btw, just telling ya so you have more context as to what happens in the first timeline for ACTUAL Higurashi), Keiichi would be really paranoid due to everything that was happening. But whenever the assault happened, Akira would just suddenly show up while he was walking down a path one day—visibly panicked and literally sobbing. Keiichi, being.. well, himself—would loudly ask what was wrong while rushing over. Only for Akira to basically collapse and just start repeating that he felt unclean over and over.

Maybe the last people Akira saw before the assault happened were Rena and Mion, so he'd utter that while panicking. But Keiichi, paranoid, would mistake it for them both having done something so bad that they made him get sent into a panic like this.

Oh my god she's adorable I love her

Also love how the anime kinda gives everyone a little :3 mouth sometimes

Anyways! Oooo yeah -- I imagine in his paranoid state he'd demand to know what Rena and Mion did to Akira, but they'd have no idea what he was talking about

Higurashi: Massacre Chapter 1

Like Time Killing, this arc opens up with Rika's murder and her asking who kills her.

Considering that's the opening to this arc, we can look forward to finding out the truth.

In Time Killing, Rika's murder is what TvTropes would call futureshadowing. We're told she died and then the rest of the arc focuses on how Akasaka met her. Though rather than the arc foreshadowing that Rika dies, it foreshadows that Akasaka didn't help her.

And if you're reading the series in the intended order, you would have also just finished Curse Killing. So the opening to Time Killing emphasizes that Rika's murder is an important thing.

This time, we're coming off of Atonement. That arc has a happy ending until it suddenly didn't and now we know why. Atonement achieved a lot, but it never made any progress to Rika's murder mystery and she was still killed.

It's been a while since Rika was killed by our unknown killer that it's understandable if we forgot about them.

Just opening up with the grand revelations about how the arcs tie together and what the underlying mechanics are.

And we finally meet Frederica Bernkastel.

And Rika's comment to Rena in Atonement chapter 10 makes a bit more sense in this context. Frederica is the accrued memories that Rika has experienced over all these timeloops while Rika is the person from each iteration. Rika didn't understand what was going on at first because she had only just died.

Now I have to wonder where Rika ends and Frederica begins throughout this story. Obviously, Frederica was the person who told Akasaka to go back to Tokyo, confronted Shion and committed suicide, told Rena about how she's existed for 100 years, and fought Rena with a broom.

But I wonder if it was Rika or Frederica who told Akasaka that she doesn't want to die and who forgave Keiichi when he remembered he'd killed Mion and Rena.

Throughout Atonement, Rika very clearly was acting like she knew what was going on so it's not like she's locked out of her memories of events.

I'm going to guess that the Rika here is who she is without the effects of the timeloops involved. When she arrived, the memories of everything started flooding in to her, but she still remained the same person. So perhaps Frederica is the part of her that cannot actually be Rika.

So I guess Rika really was the one who pleaded to Akasaka and forgave Keiichi because those are aspects of Rika, not Frederica.

Frederica seems cynical, but she's not cruel. When Rika became distressed over Curse Killing being brought up, Frederica apologized and even tried to cover up the fragment so Rika wouldn't see it.

Frederica says the people inside these fragments will never figure out their worlds are repeating, but Keiichi managed to do that. While Rika and Frederica exist consciously outside the fragments, a little piece of everyone else seems to migrate between fragments.

And now for the part you have to pay attention to. This will be on the exam.

There are three cardinal rules which govern every fragment and are common to each one.

Rule X: An unspecified person in Hinamizawa is possessed by paranoia which leads them to murder.

Rule Y: On the night of the Cotton Drifting, Jirou Tomitake and Miyo Takano are killed.

Rule Z: Everyone believes all the murders in Hinamizawa are committed by the Sonozaki family.

While discussing the rules, it's brought up how Rules Y and Z influence Rule X. When Rule Y activates, it drives up a sense of fear in the victim of Rule X and it gets amplified due to Ooishi and Takano being influenced by Rule Z.

I do want to mention that Curse Killing seems to work somewhat outside the norm though. Keiichi wasn't driven by paranoia at all. And Rule Y was entirely inconsequential to that arc. Rule Z did factor somewhat into the leadup to Keiichi deciding to commit murder, but it was only to the extent of suggesting murder as an option and all it did was fuel his decision to commit the murder because Mion outright said she couldn't do it.

Overall, Rule X is the most shaky rule. And the events from Atonement could really change things. The unspecified person is always either Keiichi, Shion, or Rena. And Keiichi could very well have broken free of Rule X and helped Rena do the same. So if Shion can be stopped, then Rule X is broken.

There's a light contradiction when they're recapping everything. Frederica says they don't know anything that happens after Rika is killed, but then she refers to when Shion learned about how her grandmother pretends to be behind the murders in Eye Opening. And that happened after Rika was killed in that arc.

Spoiler Discussion

Curse Killing is actually the proof that Rule X is not as absolute as it appears to be. Keiichi was not possessed by paranoia which led him to commit murder. He committed murder and that led to paranoia.

That's a big reason why the Curse-Killing scenario is the actual best chance to break the three rules gridlock. As long as Satoko can be saved without committing murder, then Rule X can be invalidated.
