As spring planting season winds down, we find a sense of calm in the tree planting community. The next big tasks are keeping our rooted-friends alive through the coming growing season, with loving attention, water and nutrient-rich foliar sprays (if you’re feeling fancy).

As much as the green thumb shows itself in the spring time, Autumn is actually a more ideal season to plant trees. Because the pressure of the summer growing season looming in the sky and encouraging leaf growth has slowed, fall-planted trees focus more readily on root establishment and cultivation of dynamic relationships with soil microbes, including the now-famous myco-rhizzal network of underground, stone-metabolizing fungi. 

Of course, the best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago, so spring planting is not inherently the lesser route. However, it does require more attention around watering due to the drying nature of summer heat. If you are a participant in the spring season of the “1,000 Fruit Trees for Western NC” project, feel free to reach out to #Juju on that Green Landcare Services. They are willing to help tend your trees to good health and prosperity, through mulching, plant guild establishment, watering and foliar sprays.  

If you wish to be a part of the fall-planting of the project (we still have 800 trees at least to plant!), please reach out to Whole Tree Permaculture, or email Danu Macon at [email protected]. Thanks to generosity and an upcoming crowd-sourcing fundraiser, I expect to have enough funds to sponsor tree purchases for community gardens, nature schools, low-income tree-adopters and other such deserving projects. Reach out if you know of and would like to be a liaison for anything that falls into these categories.
