The Glory: my thoughts so far
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Broke: I love you.
Woke: I will k1ll for you.
So I'm watching this show called "The Glory" it's about a girl named Moon Dong Eun who's plotting to get revenge on her high school classmates and teacher who bullied her, and by bullying I mean (extremely violent mental and physical abuse, which left her body disfigured, and her life ruined)
And I gotta say, THE REVENGE PLOT IN THIS SHOW IS REALLY SATISFYING SO FAR
There's already so much media that vilifies bully victims, so SEEING A BULLY VICTIM AS THE MAIN CHARACTER THAT WE ARE ROOTING FOR IS SO REFRESHING.
I haven't watched that many kdramas but this is also the reason why I appreciated Gangnam Beauty, bc just like The Glory, both the female leads are
not vilified by the narrative for their unconventional choices, (Kang Mi-rae for her plastic surgery and now Moon Dong Eun for her revenge). In The Glory, the the trauma Dong Eun had to endure while being abused by her classmates and teacher was portrayed in a very sympathetic light, and the story instead pins the blame on the people and the circumstances that led her to make those choices. Not to mention her bullies live good lives but continue to be terrible people with NO REMORSE for their actions even in adulthood, so while Dong Eun's revenge is still morally questionable, it is also VERY understandable.
Another thing I LOVE is how realistic Dong Eun's revenge plot is executed. The show and the Dong Eun herself is aware of the disadvantages she has (with the laws and all) and so she carefully executes her revenge in the way that she doesn't have to get her hands dirty. WHICH MAKES THE REVENGE TO THESE TERRIBLE PEOPLE ALL THE MORE SATISFYING! Remember that teacher who abused her? Yeah, She orchestrated his son to kill him, by simply confessing what the teacher did to her (bc she knows how much their family values reputation) HONESTLY QUEEN, LOVE THAT FOR HER! (also the irony that she also became a teacher like him except better, and is actually kind to her students)
And this show isn't exactly the usual "ReVENGe is BAd!! DOn't throw away your life for reVEnge!!" In fact, most of Dong Eun's allies actually support her because they understand just how evil her former highschool bullies are that they needed to be punished.
Which leads to the scene with Dong Eun and her love interest Ju Yeo-jeong. When she first confessed how she was planning revenge against her bullies, Yeo-jeong thought it was just some light bullying, until she undressed and showed the disfigured scars littered across her body. Yeo-jeong being a doctor, saw her scars and understood how much she suffered that he wept. He went from telling her not to pursue revenge to declared that he is willing to be her accomplish hence this scene.

MURDEROUS VENGEFUL COUPLE, Love that for them. They probably won't come out of this unscathed, but I really want them to WIN and get a happy ending, idk if that's too much to ask for. 😩😩😩😩

gosh. the terribly poetic and heartbreaking nature of love that doesn't work out not because two people don't love each other, but because the world won't let them love each other. love that runs deep, but just won't work out the way one wants to. having external issues break what might be meant to be otherwise is truly pain on a whole different level.

Twinkling Watermelon Ep 6 Recap
There is a montage of Cheong Ah’s childhood and how she came to like Yi Chan. Its extremely sweet, and to me, extremely insightful. It might seem redundant to say, but I never realised how alone someone like Cheong Ah could be. The classroom scene where she looks up to see her classmates laughing (all in silence to her and us) was impactful.
Tumblr media
On to a montage of the band mates and Se Kyeong in a theme park. I love how respective the band mates are hahaha. I doubt this would have been the reality in 90s South Korea, but lets take this sweet moment of alliance.
I also love this little moment Eun Gyeol and Se Kyeong have. Its a reversal (a subversion?) on most love triangles where the expectation is two boys fight over a girl, but there a reversal with the initial assumption that Eun Gyeol likes Yi Chan, and now the assumption that Eun Gyeol likes Se Kyeong as in most such triangles.
Eun Gyeol is right to say that the band shouldn’t be at Se Kyeong’s whims but also why not change to an easier, more manageable song? He’s trying so hard to put out this relationship when it's likely that it will end by itself.
So there was a contestant that was supposed to receive the shock, in place of Eun Gyeol. Who was that? Yi Chan? And again, we are left on a cliffhanger :(
The flood that Cheong Ah talked about - could it be this? Why did her mother leave her to a woman who wouldn’t be kind to her?
But I think we got our first clue as to the series’ name - the watermelon keychain of Cheong Ah? I have a post saying that the name is dumb, but I think its so cute, also in the world of kdramas with very generic names, this imagery is so integral for this story.

Jihyuk and jiwon's relationship is the total opposite of sumin and minhwan's.
While the former two are incredibly wholesome and open, with a relationship based on trust, Sumin and Minhwan's relationship is stewing in toxicity, built on a thin web of lies.
Jihyuk won't look at another girl the way he looks at jiwon, Minhwan was staring at Jiwon at the altar.
Jiwon and Jihyuk go out of their way to love and help each other.
Minhwan ruins the brakes on his own car to ensure his wife's death. (that blows up, quite literally, in his face later btw)
A relationship built on lies never lasts long

who needs a goddess when you have a witch
i like hong-jo
i'm still really sore about shin-yu's goddess comment and my wish for the second half is that hong-jo gets more self-assured and leans into being a witch... cause i just absolutely love the scenes when she casts spells and burns the papers and how they are filmed. loved the ending of episode 2 or the spell in episode 3 or when shin-yu realized he drank the love potion.
also, look at her. so handsome and pretty. i fall in love with her everytime.
Tumblr media
also, skipping around, being giddy when your crush writes you, or being annoyed some dude is pestering you and claiming you hexed him is not immature, it's human.
from the end of ep 1 onwards, shin-yu pressured her from one thing into another: take the box, open the box, show me book, give me a spell, give it to me now, that was the wrong spell, fix the mistake, it's all your fault, take responsibility, you swayed me and made me waver...the audacity of this dude, for real. he was real mean to her too. and through it all she internalized that it's her fault and still tried to help him. should have kicked him to the curb.
she's far from perfect and i'm plenty annoyed with her and some decisions. i just wish hong-jo's faults and missteps would be treated with the same indulgence as shin-yu's are.

I don’t know what it is about the Jane Austen adaptations I’ve seen recently, but they just have so much trouble sticking the landing.
#i mean#ANY mansfield park adaptation??#especially 1999 but that one has a whole bunch of other stuff wrong with it too#and I almost GET IT because in the book the conclusion *is* very quick#but isn’t the point of an adaptation to expand on what is missing in the book?#also Emma and p&p#both of those books have such good rich things happen after the accepted proposals but the major adaptations just totally gloss over that??#Harriet and Robert meeting again in London! where’s my Emma adaptation that gives me that?!#Lizzy and Darcy being all cute after she accepts him!!!#I really feel like#in a miniseries ideally Darcy’s proposal and knightley’s proposal would both be at the *beginning* of the last episode#not almost at the end of it#because let! the other! things! happen!#let Austen’s storytelling shine!!!#can’t speak for the book in s&s discourse because I never finished it but like. 1995 and 2008 both had lovely endings#it’s not too hard in that sense#but it also is??? apparently? if we’re going by the 1981#need to watch the 70s one too#AND D O N ‘ T get me started on mansfield park#where ?! WHERE?!?! is my adaptation where we actually get to see Edmund slowly falling for Fanny at the end????#(I do not see 1999 it doesn’t exist)#like no. because in that one they paint Edmund like he’s been in love with Fanny forever and. no????#and then 2007 with him just having this random epiphany- what? two weeks after he breaks up with Mary?#and then he just runs out and kdrama-arm-grabs Fanny in the garden and kisses her??? HATE IT THANKS#at least when kdramas do it it’s kind of romantic#this Edmund was just creepy#and since we’re back on this discussion PLEASE I’VE BEEN ON MY KNEES give us a likeable Edmund!!!!!#I just used up my tag limit so I’m gonna tag this for my files and shut up and go to bed :) <3#elly's posts#jane austen

it has been two weeks but I'm not over joong gil, bruised and battered on the ground, coughing up blood, barely able to move after holding off the folks from hell for so long, mustering up all his might left to grab onto the main baddie’s ankle.
like I don’t think you understand how feral that moment makes me, as if his measly weak hand could actually do anything to stop the guy but pride and dignity are meaningless and giving up absolutely unthinkable to joong gil now that ryeon is in danger so he gives every last ounce of himself to protecting her, regardless of where they might stand with one another. it’s the ultimate act of love and loyalty and mettle and I'm never getting over it

I watched the first half hour of episode 10 of mctna yesterday.I can't say anything about Seon-ho and Hwi's crying. whenever I want to talk about that damn scene of Seon-ho crying in Yeon's room, I feel like all the sorrows of the world are weighing on my heart. in that scene, I just silently stare at him (and extraordinary Dohwan's acting) and cry silently. also for Hwi , Yang Se jong's acting in the emotional moments is wonderful.but what I'll never forget is that when I first watched Yeon's funeral scene, when the camera focused on the scenery behind them and a shadow moved there, I almost screamed out" that it's Seon-ho. I'm sure it's him. no one can be except him. " then the camera showed his sad and oppressed face.....I was really sad for others in this series, but whenever I was sad for others, suddenly his face appeared on the screen and all my sorrows were for him.
