Sadly, she passed away at the very young age of 38 and it really breaks my heart because she had a wonderful screen presence and I would have loved to see her in more things.

Foxy Brown - A Whole Lotta’ Woman

“That’s my sister baby, and she’s a whole lotta woman.”

Caught up with the 1974 blaxploitation film “Foxy Brown” last night courtesy of the Netflix instant streaming queue (I noticed yesterday when I was editing the list, that certain films would only be available until Jan 1, so I moved them to the top of the list, and this was one of those). Was mostly curious, because I knew it was an influence on Tarantino’s ‘Jackie Brown’, and I thought it might be worth a chuckle or two. The dialog was the source of most of the laughs, full of a lot of obsolete slang and gratuitous street obscenities, but the costumes were a close second. The story is basically about a sexy black woman whose boyfriend is gunned down by the drug mob because he was an informant (turned in by her sleazy brother, played by Antonio ‘huggy bear’ Fargas), and then goes on a one woman vendetta against the crime cartel. The first two thirds of the movie is pretty tiresome, once you get weary of the initial camp value, but the final third has some fun over the top violence and mayhem that is worth the price of admission alone (including Ms. Brown taking on an entire dyke bar, a couple of overweight rednecks, and chopping up several bad guys with an airplane prop). And if you’re a fan of boobies, you won’t be disappointed either.
