Note
So if I cast Kasmina’s Transmutation on a changeling creature, does it still keep all its creature types?
Yes, it will.
Even though Kasmina’s Transmutation causes the creature with changeling to lose the changeling ability, that ability has already done its thing and so removing it doesn’t accomplish much of anything. This is because of the layers system and the fact that effects that define types, subtypes, or supertypes are applied a couple of layers earlier than effects that add or remove abilities.

Note
Why does Kasmina's Transmutation change the creature to a 1/1 with no abilities, and shows a frog-like creature, but doesn't actual turn it into a Frog like Frogify does?
It’s Frog-like and not actually a Frog. Does that sound like a real answer?

High Alert
At FNM at my LGS this week it was Standard and I took an Eldraine updated version of High Alert. I wasn’t sure how well this deck would do without Tetsuko or Dive Down but I was pleasantly surprised that the deck actually performed better now than it ever did when I previously used it and I went 3-0. Its a small sample size so I could have just gotten lucky but didn’t lose a single game and they weren’t particularly close. The deck is super low budget too.
Tumblr media
There are a few things that made this deck better with Eldraine: 1. More 4 toughness creatures at 2 cmc. It turns out 4 is way bigger than 3 in standard. 2. Fortifying Provisions is actually pretty good. This one surprised me but that extra 1 toughness often got me lethal a turn earlier and made it even harder for my opponent to deal with my creatures. The food token was never relevant. 3. Most importantly Fae of Wishes is really really good. Curving it into a high alert or Huatli and hitting for 4 in the air on turn 3 puts a lot of pressure on your opponent and it also can function as a tutor for high alert or removal if needed.
Click below for more deck details and match up details
Mistford River Turtle is not normally a card you would play in standard but in this deck its basically a 5/5 that makes another creature unblockable when it attacks. I actually rarely used the turtle as I often won before it was relevant but the few times I did use it it was very strong.
Teyo isn’t a new card to the deck but I wanted to mention it because this card is deceptively good. I put this in the deck just for the ability to make 0/3 walls but it has stayed in the deck as a 4 of because of just how relevant the hexproof is. Against aggressive decks teyo saves a lot of life because he prevents burn from going face. Against control decks he prevents discard and milling effects from working too. The hexproof Teyo gives has come up a lot while I’ve played this deck.
Huatli is great as a backup for high alert. She can’t let your defenders attack but she does make them into much better blockers until you can get your high alert (and even if you don’t there are enough non defenders in the deck that you can still win with just huatli).
Drawn from dreams is card draw that makes the deck a bit more consistent in getting the important cards.
The sideboard is mostly situational removal. I have 4 pacifism in the mainboard which is a generic removal that deals with almost any potential blocker or threat but there are some match ups where you need more removal or more specific removal. Conclave tribunal is just a good catch all for any problematic permanents. The Frogify and Kasminas Transmutation is in there for dealing with big creatures and utility creatures, The only reason for the split is thats just what I had you could run either in place of the other (frogify is slightly better if you have the choice). Giant killer is again good for big creatures. It may seem a bit overboard but in my experience the deck struggles most against big creatures, it tends to have no problem against aggro. Selective Snare is in there in case I went up against a knight deck or a token deck. The counters in there for playing against heavy control decks. Having a variety of removal in the sideboard is also quite nice for Fae of Wishes. Obviously this sideboard was leaning a bit on what my local meta is generally like, when making a sideboard I recommend you adjust to suit your own meta.
Matches:
Round 1 vs Simic Elementals 2-0
Not much to say about this match up. It was a very budget build of simic elementals and I curved out into fae of wishes and high alert both games. In game 2 I did use Wish Granted to get selective snare to bounce their only blocker for lethal which was an interesting play.
Round 2 vs Rakdos Aggro 2-0
Game 1 I got hit once by a dreadhorde butcher and then walled my opponents aggro. Teyo came down early and really slowed my opponent down as they had to spend their burn removing him (their only planeswalker removal was angraths rampage which doesn’t work while teyo is in play). Once I played high alert and fortifying provisions making my turtle effectively a 6/6 it was pretty much over. Game 2 was a bit slower for me but I got down an early huatli giving me some extra life. My opponent played a spawn of mayhem but I had the pacifism for it. Once I got the High Alert my opponent scooped.
Round 3 vs Esper Stacks 2-0
Game 1 Teyo really shined in this match up. The hexproof prevented my opponent from using thought erasure. They ended up using teferi to bounce Teyo in order to thought erasure, I had another Teyo in hand so they picked something else. My creatures all being 4 toughness mattered a lot in this match up as it meant Oath of Kaya couldn’t kill anything. Without any good blockers once I got down high alert I won pretty quickly. For Game 2 I sided out my Pacifisms (since I didn’t see any creatures in my opponents deck) and sided in the counters though it ended up not really mattering. My Negate got thought erasured and I didn’t draw the others. I also lost High Alert to a Thought Erasure and had to Fae of Wishes to get the one in my sideboard. It was a slower game but I still ended up winning.
Conclusion
While I wasn’t playing against any crazy tier 1 oko decks (my local meta is great like that) the deck did feel very strong. More consistent than previous iterations. In any case it was a lot of fun, easily my favourite azorius deck I’ve ever played.

So out of the cards spoiled so far, any particular War of the Spark card you're looking most forward to?
LOOOOONG post to follow, so just hit J if you’re on desktop to skip this one. Mobile users, I’m sorry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Really looking forward to trying these out in Jeleva. Chandra, the Firebrand was eventually cut, but I think Ral does enough other things to deserve his own test run.
Tumblr media
Really looking forward to putting this in Aminatou as another infinite combo piece alongside Aminatou herself and Felidar Guardian.
Tumblr media
In Vaevictis, let’s me deal with smaller targets by giving me four damage to shoot with every swing of the dragon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deathsprout is going to be a staple in damn near every BGx deck, and Kasmina’s Transmutation is just prime “removal” for monoblue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of these for Edgar (and also because I just really, really like Sorin). Celebrant gives insurance against board wipes, and lets me ping people when I start running out of gas. I don’t think it alone is going to be enough to close games, but it may be enough to take at least one other person out.
And due to not being able to post many more due to picture limits; Teyo, Kasmina, Davriel, Tibalt, and Tezzeret. I just think they’re neat. :^)

War of the Spark Prerelease
I’m a little late on this one, but the prerelease was just so much fun I have to talk about it.
Suffice it to say, War of the Spark was highly anticipated by everyone, and there was a lot of energy in the air during the prerelease. People eager cracked open packs, and I found myself in a somewhat unusual situation: I had too many seemingly viable options!
Here’s how it went down.
Tumblr media
Art: Daarken
When I opened up my prerelease kit, only a few things were certain. One, I had really great playables in every color except Blue. Two, I had just barely enough fixing to make 3 color work. Three, I was playing Ugin, the Ineffable no matter what.
My prerelease promos were Narset’s Reversal and Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter. I definitely wasn’t playing the reversal, but Yanggu seemed like a decent starting point into Green. That, plus two copies of Evolution Sage seemed too good to pass up.
As far as other Planeswalkers, I had Domri, Anarch of Bolas; Kaya, Bane of the Dead; Sarkhan the Masterless; Vraska, Swarm’s Emience; and Ob Nixilis, the Hate-Twisted. Vraska played nicely into Green, But Sarkhan was a massive pull into Red. And I wanted to play Kaya as well, and many of my other playables were in Black, so I figured a Green/Black base with a heavy Red was a way to go.
Problem was, I think I was a little too greedy with my mana base, trying to stretch for an extra splash with Bioessence Hydra (to be played entirely off of fixers), but it just felt like a win-more. I also screwed up by not putting Snarespinner & Ahn-Crop Invader in my main deck, which I think were big mistakes. But as I said, I’ve never had a prerelease pool that really felt like I could take it in so many directions. Usually I feel like I’m scraping playables together with very little in the way of options.
All told, it ended up performing reasonably well. Ugin, the Ineffable and Spellgorger Weird were the MVPs of the deck, and I had great success with Jiang Yanggu and Vraska as well. I beat my first match, a Red/Black based deck that seemed to be trying for aggro, but then got stomped by my second match, a Blue/Black Amass deck that flew over or attacked right through my defenses. The third match was interesting, which appeared to be something of a Red/Green/White Herioc deck designed to use Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin as a way to spiral out of control, and with Feather to keep the pump spells going. It absolutely trampled me one game, but I took over the others with Ugin, and ended up going 2-1 for the night.
General Format Notes
Planeswalkers, planeswalkers, planeswalkers. As expected, most ‘walkers do exert a massive amount of influence on the game, and change a lot of otherwise straightforward decisions. In general, all the Rare & Mythic Planeswalkers are fantastic, and worth taking out if you have the chance. The Uncommon Planeswalkers are more situational, but pretty universally good as well, with just a few exceptions.
Partly because of Planeswalkers, but also due to the presence of the God cycle and several other powerhouse Rares, the format is incredibly bomb heavy. Removal that can cleanly deal with all types of bombs are premium in this format, where they would otherwise range between mediocre and unplayable in others. This includes forced discard effects, i.e. Toll of the Invasion; counterspells, such as No Escape and even Crush Dissent; and permanent swapping effects like Role Reversal. If your opponents’ bombs are mainly creatures, you can also include Kasmina’s Transmutation in that list, but given that it doesn’t work on Planeswalkers, it’s more situational than it would be in another format.
Proliferate is the real deal, and nearly every card that can do it is worth including. That goes double for cards that are repeatable sources of Proliferate, such as Evolution Sage, Flux Channeler, Grateful Apparition, and Merfolk Skydiver. Be sure to set yourself up for Proliferate with plenty of creatures that generate +1/+1 counters easily to get the ball rolling.
Amass is also phenomenal, and incredibly versatile. I enjoy that there are different strategies to either go as big as possible with your army or to use them as sacrifice fodder. Either way, the extra value tacked onto cards with Amass is very real.
This is a 3 color format, particularly if you are base Green. You definitely can run a 2 color deck if your draft shakes out that way, but it’s incredibly easy to find enough fixing to splash a third color, and if your base is Green, you should generally assume that running 3 colors is correct. It’s not uncommon for Green decks to be 3 colors with a 4th color splash.
The format is actually not as slow as it would appear for being so bomb dependent. Fliers and evasion are critical, and often games come down to who can create the biggest flying monster the fastest. There are some wild combos in this deck, so be ambitious and go big or go home.
Card Specific Notes
Eternal Skylord gets my vote for “Mythic Uncommon” of the set. It’s really not hard to set it up so this comes down and you immediately have a 5/5 or larger flying Army. It closes down games really fast if you don’t have answers to it.
All the gods are bonkers, but God-Eternal Oketra is insane. Like, it’s to the point that I would consider taking her pack three even if she’s not in my colors at all and trying to make it work. She’s that good.
Ugin, the Ineffable is the best Planeswalker you can open, period. Yes, he costs 6, but he goes in literally any deck and is a value machine. The fact that you draw the cards he manifests off the top of your library is just incredible, and he will take over any game given just a couple turns to work.
Ahn-Crop Invader does work. First Strike turns out to be incredibly irritating in this format, and the Invader will frequently force unfavorable decisions for the blocker, especially if you’re attacking their Planeswalkers.
Dovin, Hand of Control probably takes the cake for me of most underrated Planeswalker. He does a really good job shutting down your opponents, and plays a lot like an Icy Manipulator. That, plus he’s in Proliferate colors, so he can potentially stick around a long time.
The other Planeswalker I seriously misjudged was Ashiok, Dream Render. I didn’t realize how very possible it would be to mill out your opponent in this format, especially if you’re in base Blue and can proliferate to get full value out of Ashiok.
As mentioned before, Toll of the Invasion is a maindeck card in this format. You don’t want tons of them, but it’s one of the cleanest ways to answer Gods & Planeswalkers before they get deployed.
Ugin’s Conjurant doesn’t die to deathtouch. Just saying.
So that’s that. Overall, I had a blast at the prerelease. This set was a ton of fun, and I will look forward to drafting it like crazy, both in person and on Arena.

Hey friend, What happens if I cast Kasmina's Transmutation on my own army token while Eternal Skylord is on the battlefield? Does my army have flying or not? What if I cast the skylord after turning the army into a 1/1?
Whether or not your Army has flying depends on which effect is newer. If Transmutation entered the battlefield after Skylord did, then your army doesn’t fly. If Skylord entered the battlefield after Transmutation became attached to your Army, then it does fly.

Note
In my prerelease I had a 3/3 creature enchanted with Kasmina’s Transmutation and Kaya’s Ghostform. I then cast Massacre Girl. Once the frog dies, does the 3/3 come back in time for it to also die if MG’s delayed trigger wipes out other creatures as well?
When the enchanted creature dies, both Massacre Girl’s delayed trigger and the trigger from Kaya’s Ghostform will trigger. Since you control both of these triggers, you choose the relative order in which they go on the stack, so you can return your creature to the battlefield after Massacre Girl has given everything else another -1/-1 until end of turn and maybe get your 3/3 to survive.
