My favourite library in Finland: the National Library on Unioninkatu. I got myself a new book: Suomen historia by Pentti Virrankoski, about the history of Finland. It is by investing into the critical thinking of its citizens, of which this free library is a part, that Finland is able to keep progressing. Critical thinking means being able to question anything - the government, religion, a nation's history - and access information from a wide variety of sources. What we need in this world is more democracy, more freedom of speech, and, frankly, more libraries. Hoy les contaré una anécdota que tuve en mi viaje a Finlandia. Era 4 de octubre y me levanté temprano decidida a ir al Ateneum, uno de los bellos museos de arte de Helsinki. Salí del hotel, con mis mapas cargados en el celular, la cuestión es que me perdí. Me detuve a tratar de ubicarme, no tenía señal, no sabía dónde estaba y traté de orientarme. Cual fue mi sorpresa cuando vi un letrero detrás de mí y que decía que estaba una biblioteca. Dije: pues me encantan, vamos a entrar. Y no fue solo una biblioteca más, era la biblioteca nacional de Finlandia. Lo que quiero decirles con esto es lo que para mi es una fiel creencia: son los libros los que nos encuentran a nosotros. Ese día ellos me encontraron y fue un maravilloso encuentro. Suomalaista kirjallisuutta on kustannettu yli 800 000 erillistä teosta. Vuosittain suomalaista kirjallisuutta kustannetaan yli 13 000 nimikettä. Näistä suuri osa on esimerkiksi raportteja. Perinteistä kirjallisuutta ja oppikirjoja julkaistiin vuonna 2010 noin 4500 nimikettä. Suomen Kansalliskirjasto tallentaa kaikki painotuotteet ja tallenteet. Kansalliskirjastossa on yli 100 hyllykilometriä aineistoa ja yli 3,5 miljoonaa teosta. Vuonna 2003 suomalaisissa kotikirjastoissa oli keskimäärin 260 teosta eli yli kahdeksan hyllymetriä kirjoja.

Vuonna 2008 77 prosenttia suomalaista osti vähintään yhden kirjan vuodessa. Yli kymmenen kirjaa vuodessa ostavia oli 652 000 henkilöä.

Over 800 000 different works of Finnish literature have been published. Over  13 000 titles are published of Finnish literature every year. Most of these are e.g. reports. In 2010, around 4500 titles were published of traditional literature and textbooks. The Finnish National Library records all printed books and downloads. There are over 100 kilometers of shelves worth of material and over 3.5 million works in the National Library. In 2003 there were on average 206 works or eight kilometers of shelves worth of books in Finnish local libraries.

In 2008, 77% of Finns bought at least one book a year. 652 000 people bought more than 10 books a year.

Luin ensimmäistä viisi Harry Potter -kirjaa. Ensin se oli vaikeaa, mutta myöhemmin tunnistin monta sanoja.

Luin kaksi Muumi -kirjaa: Taikurin hatun ja Vaarallisen juhannuksen. Oli vähän vaikeaa, mutta opin paljon uusia sanoja.

Luin Mörkövahti -kirjan, joka on lastenkirja. Oli vähän helpompaa lukea, mutta haastava.

Luin kaksi Suomalaisten painajaisia-kirjaa.

I read the first 5 HP-books. It was difficult at first, but later I recognized many words.

I read two Moomin books, it was a bit difficult but I learnt lots of new words.

I read Mörkövahti, which is a childrens’ book. It was a bit easier to read, but still challenging.

Fantastic private tour for my American guests and their Finnish friend (who was about to get married). They followed her all the way from USA to attend the ceremony and visited Helsinki on the way.
