I was going to write up a Tumblr post on the names of Radley's and Malcolm's gangs, how they differ between original and dub versions, and the ironic significance of said names.

Instead, Dracula Daily happened and I was so upset I had to get out my feelings in a scene for one of my current fic chapters:

He took out his phone to idly look up exorcisms and other ways to remove restless spirits, but frowned at a notification. ". . . Of all the things to show up right now, I've got a reminder about Dracula Daily starting soon."

". . . What is that?" Kalin grunted. "It sounds like something Scotch would like, but not you."

"It's an email list that feeds you pieces of the novel Dracula each day," Radley said. "It's told as diary entries, letters, and newspaper clippings, and they're sent out on each corresponding day that the entries were originally made in the book. And you're right, it wouldn't normally be my thing. Scotch told me about lots of friendship goodness and got me interested enough to try it last year."

"So did you like it?" Kalin asked.

"Yes and no," Radley replied. "I loved the friendships and other pure love between the characters, but I got so upset by Lucy's fate that it could never be a favorite book for me."

"You cared that much about her?" Kalin sounded disbelieving.

". . . Let me guess, you watched a movie version as a Dark Signer but never read the book," Radley said.

"You're right," Kalin said.

"It seems like all the movies portray Lucy as trashy," Radley said. "She was actually incredibly sweet. She sure never deserved all that Dracula put her through, and then to not be able to get her happy ending. I kept hoping that even after she became a vampire, she could be saved when Dracula was killed. Instead, they had to kill her to stop her." He shook his head. "It was extremely disturbing. I wonder if that's why they changed her in the movies, because you're right that it's much less disturbing if she's a naughty girl anyway."

". . . Scotch seems like the type who'd be upset by a nice character being hurt too," Kalin said.

"He is," Radley said. "He'd read a lot of Internet hype about the friendships. Last year was his first time reading it too. I think he got more upset than I did. After he finished the book, he wrote a fanfiction story where the Harkers meet The Time Traveler—from The Time Machine, you know?—and they go back in time to save Lucy. It was actually really good. Scotch said he insists on believing that's really how the story continued." He smiled. "Scotch loves happy endings for those who deserve them."

". . . That's an interesting premise," Kalin had to admit.

Radley nodded. "It's actually pretty plausible, considering both books take place around the same time and the Harkers and The Time Traveler all live in London. Why not have them meet?"

This is such an awesome Tumblr idea! I don't suppose you've come across any doujins with Kalin/Kiryu and Radley/Ramon from 5Ds? I have some, but I know there are others and it frustrates me so much not to be able to find them anywhere!

I've seen many Kiryu stuff in passing when i go though second hand sites. Here's Two

As for Radley my understanding is he's a minor character? So its normally hard to find anything then [of course my 5ds knowledge is very small so i could be wrong]

I personally don't have much 5D's at all because I haven't seen the series, and the only stuff I do get is when I buy it for people lol

Since the Sims 4 was free, I ended up downloading it and making Yusei and Kalin because I literately don’t have anything better to do besides study for an english exam but whatever

So this is as close as I could get with both characters bc none of the hair styles are close enough to their actual hairstyles, which is probably a blessing in disguise. I was considering making Crow and Jack, as well as Radley (my other 5Ds muse lmfao) but ran out of steam after I finished creating Yusei.

Kalin has the erratic, gloomy, self assured and dastardly traits, and Yusei has the athletic, good, geek, and quick learner traits.

Noteable things:

theyre husbands and they have wedding rings BUT they suck at dates but literately flirt ALL THE TIME at home....Kalin literately blew a kiss at yusei before i could even build their goddamn house

Kalin also gave Yusei a rose and kissed his hand

Part of Yusei’s sleepwear is galaxy leggings

Yusei will stop whatever hes ding at any given time and just do sit ups bc thats how he is i guess

I spent so much money on a nice bedroom and bathroom the kitchen doesnt have a table and i could barely afford a garbage can

they dont go to bed before 2am its fucking ridiculous but im not surprised

I accidentally gave Kalin the wrong career because my game froze a bit and now he’s coworkers with yusei and they both work as tech support

Kalin has taken 5 depression showers

theyre friends with a biker butch lady named Amina and shes valid

I LOST KALIN AND WHEN I FOUND HIM HE WAS PICKING A FIGHT WITH SOMEONE ON THE STREET LIKE GODDAMMIT

Kalin wont eat anything else besides macaroni and cheese

EVERY SINGLE TIME YUSEI COOKS THEY GET FOOD POISONING SO THAT SCANS, THATS IN CHARACTER

In summary:

they are stupid husbands who share one braincell

Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Links Duelist Road Clash at Crash Town - Showdown at Suntown Episode 3: Malcolm and his Crew defeated by the Radley Bunch member Kalin, a defeat so humiliating, there had to be a solution. Yusei later approached Malcom and wants in (Yusei thinks by joining Malcolm would be the way to beat Kalin and bring him home). Yusei easily beats the same gang who welcomed him in one turn, and that left Malcolm speechless that he had no hesitation to hire Yusei. Later into the night, all that Kalin has in his mind is the darkness from his past that haunted him to this day. He thinks losing in Crash Town is proper punishment. Then comes along a kid called West. West and his sister Nico look up to Kalin as a hero, and hopes he could rescue their dad who's trapped in mining at the mountains. The other day my friend asked me if The Radley Bunch is really the name of Radley's gang or if I made it up. I assured that it is indeed the canon name, as well as The Malcolm Crew for Malcolm's.

These, however, are the dub names. I also explained that in the original Japanese, Radley's gang is called The Ramon Group and Malcolm's is The Malcolm Family. What is interesting, I realized, is that the names are opposite to how the gangs actually seem to behave. Radley's sounds more formal and matter-of-fact and Malcolm's more friendly and welcoming. But in actual fact ...

Exhibit A, Radley's gang hangs out in the diner Radley owns (yes, it's his, made expressly clear in the Japanese version by the sign "Ramon's Diner"). They are happy and relaxed and Radley tries to get Kalin to join the festivities. When Kalin refuses and walks out on him instead, Radley is clearly put-out and may even be hurt. But he controls his feelings, has a civil conversation with a gang member, and doesn't once take out his unhappiness on an innocent party. You can clearly see from his expressions that he is upset. If I showed these pictures out of context, I imagine anyone would think he is snarling at this poor kid. But in both Japanese and English, that is absolutely not the case. He looks mad, but he speaks perfectly evenly.

Exhibit B, Malcolm's gang hangs out in the villa Malcolm has. Malcolm gets drunk, rages, and lashes out at anyone who moves. One of the nicer gang members, another young kid, shows concern for him drinking so much. Malcolm reacts by striking him on the head with the liquor bottle and knocking him out! Real nice family there. This is, of course, cut from the dub so I unfortunately can't show it, but it's available in the first Japanese language Crash Town episode and can be watched on Hulu and Crunchyroll.

It's interesting that the dub changes the gangs' names when you think about it. The Radley Bunch fits a more informal, friendly group, as they seem to be, while The Malcolm Crew could go either way. I wonder if they had any real reason for changing the names, such as wanting names that fit them better.

An important addendum to this post: Malcolm's Crew calls Malcolm "Boss." Radley's Bunch calls Radley by his name. From this too, it's easy to see which group is friendlier.
