(explanations and sources under the cut)
Make-out session on Theodora's dead sister's grave: This one comes from Blue and Green: A Novel of Old Constantinople, a.k.a. the Victorian Theodora Novel (TM). Anastasia dies of consumption, and Theodora and Justinian's first kiss happens on top of her tombstone.
Justinian has strong opinions about 9/11: This is from a very obscure musical called Byzantium!, which was panned by critics because Justinian never shut up about the War on Terror (among other issues).
Justinian cheats on Theodora with the author's self-insert: This is kind of cheating because it's from a Wattpad fanfic, but yeah, there's a story out there where this happens. You can tell that this character is a self-insert because the character and the author are both named Kelsey.
Justinian threatens to strangle Theodora to death: This is from Samuel Edwards's Theodora, in which Justinian is basically an abject psychopath. The context for this is that Justin disapproves of Theodora, so Theodora volunteers to leave Justinian (at least until Justin is out of the picture), and Justinian has a sobbing meltdown and threatens to kill her if she leaves him because if he can't have her, nobody can. (This is obviously presented as romantic and correct.)
Hecebolus goes to Horse Jail: This is from Jack Oleck's Theodora. Hecebolus makes one snippy comment about how he's a stallion and Theodora is a helpless mare, and this obviously gets back to Justinian, who responds by throwing Hecebolus into a specially built jail cell outfitted to look like a stable. Then Justinian shows up like "oh, do you feel like a stallion now, asshole?"
Theodora abuses the telegram: Obviously, this is from that incredible alternate history Belisarius series by David Drake. They get access to the telegram in the fifth or sixth book, and Theodora exclusively uses it to spam Justinian with teary love letters begging him to come home whenever he leaves Constantinople.
Amalasuntha is Regina George: This is from Stephanie Thornton's Secret History, but it's pretty commonplace. Amalasuntha is often portrayed as a dumb blonde bully who shows up in Constantinople to steal Justinian away from Theodora, or just generally cause problems by being annoying and stupid. (I suspect this is because every decent Justinian story involves Amalasuntha dying, so authors always make her unsympathetic so readers don't feel like they have to mourn her.)
Sex scene in the palace tower: This is also from Stephanie Thornton. There's a pretty long sex scene in which Justinian and Theodora get so obsessively horny that they end up, like, tearing each other's clothes off and having sex on the stairs of some tower, and Narses kind of looks at them, shakes his head, and sends all of the staff home because they're just so horny that it's disrupting the whole household. You really get the sense that Narses does not get paid enough for this.
Sex scene in front of the doctor: This is from the John the Eunuch series. Justinian comes down with some mysterious illness, and Theodora decides to have sex with him on his sickbed in front of all his staff. Justinian is clearly very into it, too, and all of the doctors and servants are just standing around watching this happen, presumably feeling too awkward to leave.
Justin hits on Theodora: This is also from Samuel Edwards, but this is weirdly common too. Usually Justin is portrayed as an unhappily married older man or a grieving widower who wishes he could have Theodora for himself, so he hits on her constantly to the point of sexual harassment, and Justinian is always like "haha, that crazy old man!" and nobody ever acts like this is even a little bit weird

It has come to my attention that it's Period Drama Appreciation Week 2023. I love period dramas and grew up watching them. They have been a formative part of my life and I'm now too disabled to watch video. Even gifs are too difficult for my brain to process. It is also Bi Visibility Week and I'm posting this on Bisexual Visibility Day. Since I can't safely post a pile of gifs, here is a list celebrating actors/characters/moments from period dramas that have been significant to my bisexuality. [Yes, this is a big list. I am missing out on watching and re-watching A Lot of awesome period dramas and I hate it. This list is helping me reclaim a bit of joy. Also I've probably forgotten some favourites and may update this.]

“Second Duke’s the Charm”, by Kate Bateman
Tumblr media
I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion
This is the first book in “Her Majesty’s Rebels” series.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a marriage of convenience set in Regency era London and in the country estate property of Justin Thornton, duke of Wansford. Justin is a self made man who got his wealth by doubling the profits of the shipping company he inherited from his father when both of them were living in Canada. He doesn’t want love in his life since he witnessed the deep grief that his mother’s death brought to his father. But as it usually happens in Romance, he is destined to be an English duke after the deaths of several cousins, uncles and his own father. Then he meets a lady at a masquerade, a lady in Scarlet, and he falls in lust with her.
“Scarlet”’s name is actually Tess and she is ironically the dowager duchess of Wansford. When she was only 19 her father forced her to marry the decrepit duke who very kindly died on their wedding night right before consummating their vows. Tess is now an independent woman, she goes to a masquerade and meets a tall dark handsome man named Justin and she decides to have a little adventure. She has a reputation of being a little care free, but the rumors are just that, rumors she spread so nobody would question her. Justin is now the duke and decides that he needs a wife, at least for a while, so given that Tess is already the duchess and that she is his “Scarlet”, he proposes her to a marriage of convenience on equal terms. Of course Justin falls ridiculously in love with her, despite himself. And by ridiculously I really mean that. I recommend you read this book to know how far he went to show Tess that he loves her. Oh, and there’s groveling too. I loved this book so much The passion between them is so hot that it could melt the North Pole. But that’s not everything that this book has to offer. The character development, especially Justin’s, is remarkable, the heroine is fantastic and they are always companions, on equal terms. They complement each other in a way that none of them is above the other or below. There are other subplots and here’s the little problem I found; one of these subplots is resolved off the page in a very convenient way. It felt like the explanations given were insufficient, as it all happened by magic. Overall I had a great time with this book and that’s what matters. It’s a page turner because the writing is so engaging, that’s why I love Kate Bateman so much. For a few hours I had fun and I forgot about my everyday life and struggles, that is priceless.

Imagine a alternate universe where Funimation dubbed the Devilman OVA and hearing Chuck Huber as Ryo
I would go crazy tbh since almost everytime Chuck Huber voices the mysterious morally grey bad boy (Android 17 and Hiei..... Ok maybe a little bit of Stein from Soul Eater too) I go
crazy for them. Hell I think even Kirk Thornton would've been a great pick for Ryo (which is funny cuz he also voiced Hiei at some point)
Akira would've been voiced by Justin Cook, Steve Blum (I know weird choice but I love Steve Blum's voice too much and I feel like he might fit Amon Akira's voice pretty well), or even (As controversial as he is...) Vic Mignogna.

Second Duke's the Charm by Kate Bateman
Tumblr media
3.75/5. Releases 12/26/2023.
Vibes: marriage of convenience, secret virgin, verrrry slick hero, and light mystery
Heat Level: 3/5.
Following a very short-term marriage (as in, he had a heart attack right after seeing her naked) to a gross old man, Tess is left a widow with some degree of independence. With that, she starts a secret detective agency with her best friends. All is well until the dukedom unexpectedly falls to cynical businessman Justin Thornton, who upon meeting Tess has a risky offer--why not have a marriage of convenience? Three months together, and they'll go their separate ways, him dodging matchmakers, her securing a stable future. Tess agrees; but doesn't quite anticipate the full risk to her heart.
This was a fun one! While mystery plots are hit or miss for me in romance, this one was light enough to enjoy--and surprisingly (for me) the rest of it was pretty much a feelings book. I do have some quibbles, but if you're looking for a fluffier read with some solid heat, I think you'll like it.
Quick Takes:
--This is a very heroine-forward romance, and places a good emphasis on Tess's friendships with her detective-coworkers and mains, Ellie and Daisy. I loved their rapport from the start (and this book does have a very evocative beginning that immediately hooked me). They were a bit bawdy, very supportive, and just fun.
I do suspect that, because this book has a bit of a modern edge (I don't get the sense that Kate Bateman was super concerned about historical accuracy, and I honestly respect it) it might not be for the Bonnet Brigade. I expect complaints. If you actually want to have fun when reading, kindly ignore them.
--Justin and Tess have a bright chemistry from the beginning, and he's so expressive of his attraction to her. He doesn't hide it at all. (And sidebar: love that Tess is beautiful and just knows this. She's not shy about her looks and using them to her advantage, which I so appreciated.) It kind of adds to the stress Tess feels about actually falling love with him, because he is very charming, and it would be so easy for her to fall despite him wanting what is essentially a no strings attached marriage.
--Like I said earlier, the mystery is on the lighter side. It also involves Queen Charlotte. I was less than enamored with this. it felt to me like an appeal to the Bridgerton crowd, and I kind of couldn't care less. In general, I find that shoehorning real (famous) historical figures often takes away from the general experience of a historical romance. It's kind of awkward, as they're almost always portrayed as being much more gracious and grand than they actually are.
--One thing I did struggle with a little was that there is much more of Tess's perspective than Justin's. His POV is there enough for you to get a tease, but not enough to really establish his feelings for Tess, in my opinion. I knew she was falling in love, but his emotional arc felt rather rushed at the end. It kind of felt like he fell in love with her all at once, and I wanted more insight. Ultimately, this took away from what was otherwise a solid love story and a good grovel.
The Sex:
It was hot, and it started early. There is one particularly good Carriage Cunnilingus scene, as well as a bit of... he thinks it's virgin role play? But it's not, Tess is an actual virgin. That's a big part of the tension, sexual and otherwise, in the first half of the book. For valid reasons, Tess has been hiding her virginity since her first husband died, and it's kind of hilarious for her to VERY successfully convince Justin, a super experienced man, that she is also experienced. His "oh yes, you must know this from all your lovers" "my God, you are so good" is really... something.
I do have to nitpick one little thing. Before Tess and Justin marry, she has some worries about contraception. She and her friends discuss several period-accurate options and methods, and I was like "oh great, she'll pick one that works for her". And then she just went "well, I'll risk it". Despite acknowledging that Justin is going to dip and leave her in London after three months, and that, though she likes the idea of a baby, she doesn't like the idea of raising a baby essentially fatherless... She just decides to risk it?
And this really wasn't considered much further. There's this vague implication that Tess perhaps likes the idea of being left with a baby (though Justin makes it clear that he's fine with her getting pregnant by another man once he leaves, and he'll legally claim the child, no questions asked--so she can have a baby either way) but I don't know. I didn't really love the sort of "fuck it" vibe to all of this. It felt weird, especially for a woman in a relatively precarious situation. Other than that, I loved the way the sex scenes in this book were handled, but that nagged me a little.
While not a perfect read, I found Second Duke's the Charm fun and charming, with the brisk sense of fun I've come to expect from Kate Bateman. It's a good read for the winter.
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for providing me with a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
