Day 88: Does money equal happiness?
It doesn't, but boy. I can't tell you how much better my life would be if I made like 20k more a year. We're the ones who put value on money at the end of the day, but thousands of years ago the value was on berries. If you wanted berries, you went out and foraged. Today, you have guaranteed access to berries, but in order to be able to get them, you have to contribute some kind of different work that isn't climbing or scavenging. Like tax collecting, or social media management (eugh.) I guess all in all its safer? I'm glad I don't have to worry about getting mauled by a cougar when trying to get food, but golly gee. Really would love to pay off the remainder of my debt—it's so close I can taste it. Really can't stress how nice it would be to have moved out already. Really can't stress how great it would be to donate to people in need when they come across my dash, or donate to more charities. Really can't stress how nice it would be to plan vacations and not have to worry about anything (not even fancy ones; just like. An Amtrak getaway or something. And not even a lot of them. Even just one or two a year.) Really can't stress how much I would love to get the opportunity to build a future, have my own house, and my own yard, constantly being able to treat friends to nice things.
All that comes from money. I can't deny it: money is the one thing standing between me and happiness. Not sure if this is the place to drop this, but I have an interview tomorrow with my top company choice. I'm still shocked on how I managed to land it, but if I do—and jesus christ, I hope I do—none of the above worries will matter at all, and hopefully, ever again.

today was a Day
patient banged her head while we were moving her (she’s okay but holy shit that scared me and i feel terrible); partner banged the ambulance into a wall (we are okay but holy shit that scared me and i have a headache); partner locked the keys into the ambulance and we spent two hours trying to get them out; thunderstorm soaked us, caused traffic accidents on our route, and made us late to a call; we nearly got into a traffic accident ourselves; patients’ families arguing with us and each other, simultaneously, very loudly, on more than one call; and i tripped and skinned my knee trying to go make myself some food which doesn’t really compare to the rest of the bullshit but it’s the cherry on top, you know?

This is an intervention, old man.
A soft chiming sound was heard through the rather large room.
Ozpin recognized the chiming, but it didn’t occur to him what was different about the chiming. He had clocks that chimed all throughout the house.
Groggily, he opened his hazelnut eyes turned his head to the clock.
Wait. He wasn’t in his office anymore.
He shot up out of the bed and looked around frantically. “Just our room. Dear lord I shouldn’t scare myself like that.” Ozpin sighed in relief, but, how did he even get up here?
Ozpin slowly got up out of bed, he was still in the same clothes as he was before he blacked out, but it had a more significant meaning than just that. “Oh. That’s why.”
Qrow must’ve found him passed out in his office and carried him up here. Makes sense as to why he wouldn’t change Oz’s clothes, poor man can’t handle him even shirtless.
He searched around the room, looking for new clothes and a few other things. He had work to do, hopefully he didn’t sleep for too long. As he was getting everything he needed for the day, he happened to catch a glimpse at the clock.
The tiny box had shown the time and the date. Not only was it noon, but it was 3 days after he passed out. “Bloody hell, I didn’t think I’d have slept that long!” He smacked his forehead in response. Now the council was really going to be on his ass for not working for 3 days! Although, it was strange, no nightmares once throughout that entire time. Quite unlike him.
Shaking away the growing confusion of the lack of nightmares, he rushed down the stairs, completely oblivious to the 11 people sitting in his living room, and to his office.
To which he found locked. Stunned, Ozpin mumbled “Who?—“
“Me.” A familiar gravely, and displeased, voice spoke from behind him. “I knew you were gonna try that and so I had Oscar lock the door from the inside.” He could hear the causal shrug in his voice.
Ozpin sighed, not out of anger, not of irritation, not even out of annoyance. But rather a knowing sound, knowing he was about to face a battle he was going to lose. For a moment he thought back to the situation in his office days prior, he was lucky to win that one.
As he turned around and walked down the hall, his initial thought of loss was solidified. Ozpin cleared his throat slightly “I see you’ve brought everyone.” He avoided eye contact. He almost felt as if he were his younger self all over again, being scolded by his dad for overworking himself. It honestly wasn’t all that different.
“I suppose you all are here to scold me for my actions of working myself too hard?” Ozpin dipped his head slightly and looked further to the right, taking more interest in the floorboards than the people in front of him. “Wow ok, apparently the part we thought was going to be the hardest was the easiest.” Another familiar, feminine, voice sounded in surprise. Glynda.
He arched an eyebrow and looked up slightly at her, she gave a smirk in response “You, dear Mr. I-overwork-myself-daily-and-never-admit-it-and-went-to-far-this-time, just admitted you have been overworking yourself.” She finished with a smile
Oh. He hadn’t even realized he said that. Although he supposed that even a small part of himself agreed he shouldn’t.
“Are any of you gonna tell him that’s not the only thing we’re here to talk about or do I have to?” Ruby questioned, crossing her arms and pouting a little in the process.
Ozpin smiled gently at her reaction, “My dear, I think you just did.” He said gently
Her eyes widened slightly “Oh. Well fine, I guess I did. But no, that’s not even what we were originally here for.” Every word was laced with a matter of fact attitude, one that only came from Ruby when she needed it to. But she never did it often.
“So, what’s the original reason you all are here?” He spoke quietly as his eyebrows furrowed.
“Therapy.” Now it was Clover’s turn to speak as he shrugged. “You uh, gotta go to it.” he nodded.
His face morphed into confusion “What? What do you mean?”
The group looked at each other with annoyed expressions. They all looked back at Oz before speaking at once.
“Go to therapy Oz.” They all said, deadpanned and thoroughly annoyed.
Ozpin attempted to speak a “W-what? I—“ before he was interrupted.
“Go to therapy.” The group repeated.
He tried once more to speak “I don’t—“ once again he was promptly interrupted.
“Oh my god literally go to therapy old man. You need it. You aren’t gonna win this argument.” Yang complained.
He was stunned into silence. He started considering his options, he had promised Qrow Glynda and even Oscar that he would go, but he was also fearful of the medical implications and environments that came with going to one.
Before he could think further, a familiar specter, one he had forgotten that he had neglected to even speak to for 3- almost 4 -week, had floated up to him and held his face with a worried expression.
Oscar spoke while patting his dad’s cheeks “Papa need help. Help not bad, r’member?” He hugged Ozpin after he finished.
That’s right, he did remember. He always taught Oscar that it was never a bad thing to ask for help. What kind of a man would he be if he didn’t follow his own words of advice.
Yang was right, his original thought, was right. He wasn’t going to win this battle, he was too tired, and at this point, he himself was starting to question if he needed it. And so he bit back his excuses for once.
“Okay. I’ll go.” He said softly as he patted Oscars head.
The group cheered and thanked Oz, but did threaten him slightly if he didn’t follow through on his promise.
Qrow laughed as he put a hand on Oz’s shoulder “Don’t worry about it, I’ll make sure he goes. I fought him tooth and nail to get him to not overwork himself I think I can handle this too.” He smiled as he looked up at the taller man “Now then, I made food using your recipe book, so you all go eat.” He shooed the kids away as they laughed.
Ozpin was happy they were happy, but still unsure of his decision, still unsure of how mad Qrow was at him. “So, what’s it like?” He said quietly, barely above a whisper.
“Hm? Therapy?” Qrow asked, looking back at him.
“Yeah.”
Qrow shrugged “Well, it sucks at first, a lot of old feelings get unburied and can leave you feeling like hell. But it gets better with time. Plus, you’ve got everyone here looking out for you.”
Ozpin simply nodded in response.
“For the record,” Qrow started as he looked at Oz sternly “You can tell the council that your boyfriend and son said that they don’t give a damn how much work you have. You need to be with your family, and You need to be physically AND mentally healthy.”
Ozpin chuckled “I will, you always had an interesting way with words.” He complimented. “Although,” Ozpin started.
Qrow raised an eyebrow “Although?” He asked.
“I do still think I deserve to make it up to everyone, starting with you.” He finished as he looked at Qrow.
Qrow scoffed gently and shook his head “Y’know Ozzy, you’re already making it up to me and the others by simply going.”
“Ah.” Ozpin said, ever so slightly disappointed.
“Buuuut” Qrow tapped a finger to his chin, faking pensiveness as he leaned against Oz. “If you really wanna make it up to me. Then tomorrow, 5:30 pm, the Beacon diner, call it a date~” he smirked slyly up at Oz.
Ozpin’s face flushed to a bright pink as he stumbled over his words at the request “a-ah.” He managed to stumble out.
Qrow snicked at his reaction “Awe, poor Ozzy still can’t handle his own boyfriend asking him on a date, how cute~” Qrow teased
“Of course not, not when it’s you asking.” Ozpin mumbled in protest as he rubbed the back of his neck. He cleared his throat and stood up straight “But yes, I can do that. Formal or casual clothes?” He asked, cheeks still dusted a subtle pink
Qrow shivered before answering “Eugh, Casual, I’ve seen you in your work clothes for too many weeks now. Take a shower.”
“Ah….of course love.” Ozpin rubbed the back of his neck again.
“…I missed that.” Qrow said quietly.
Ozpin raised an eyebrow “missed what?”
“This.” He gestured up and down at Oz. “The causal clothes, the nicknames, seeing you happy and smiling, actually seeing you.”
He looked sorrowfully at Qrow “I’m sorry love.” He decided to add one more part to that “I won’t ever do that again. To you, to Glynda, Oscar, the kids, Clover, everyone. I promise.”
Qrow perked up slightly at the last part, “…Really?”
He smiled as he tilted his head “I’m not a man who breaks or makes promises very often, am I?”
Qrow smiled, “Nah. Not ever really, on the breaking part.”
He turned around and looked at the table “Now, let’s go eat you tall ass man.”
Ozpin elbowed him gently as he walked past “You love my height and you know it!”
Qrow scoffed and gave a mischievous look before saying loudly for everyone to hear “SO ABOUT THAT DATE—“.
“SHUT UP.” Ozpin said through gritted teeth and a red face as the group laughed.
Ozpin crossed his arms “You are terrible!”
“What was that you said earlier “you love it and you know it”? Qrow smiled slyly.
Ozpin rolled his eyes.
“Ugh, you are such a brat.”

Number 4 for the romance lyric prompt for any variation of the ot4!
4. ‘Cause girls like you run 'round with guys like me 'til sun down.
The lyric is from Girls Like You by Maroon 5 (idk how obvious this is without me saying it), and was added to the playlist specifically for Claude x Hilda though a lot of the lyrics have to be taken at face value because it could be interpret extremely negatively, though not that line, and not my intent. I'll try writing a few words of the stage-production au.
I didn't read over this when I finished.
Here's the first post of the stage-production au: [HERE]
Most of the cast were gone for the day, though the actors who had agreed to go out afterwards had lounged in the audience. Dimitri and Edelgard stood on opposite step ladders, as crewmen held them in place, going over the lines of their final battle with a choreographer and the director.
Dimitri would be atop a large dragon puppet someday, and Edelgard would be in her Hegemon construction, but for now, they were in t-shirts and jeans and trying their best to imagine what the final product might look like.
Hubert and Dedue stood by their sides, and had stopped crouching after the fourth recitation of their lines. By now had been brought chairs to sit upon, from which they each spoke their one line, to be shouted in production, as they supported the song shared by The Rightful King and The Flame Emperor in their epic moment.
From the orchestral pit, the production's vocal coach, Yuri, played an upright piano to guide their tune and tempo.
Hilda sat between Claude and Ferdinand in the audience. Each man whispering along with the song with a bounce of his head while she sunk into her seat, amused, and embarrassed by the prospect of joining them.
It was the most genial cast Hilda had ever worked with, and when Ferdinand, Edelgard, Manuela, Seteth and Lorenz had spoken of not drinking for seven weeks before a show, the bulk of the cast had agreed to go sober for the duration; though when they'd spoken of different dietary restrictions in the week leading up to production, there'd been very little consensus. Regardless, tonight would be the last hurrah for those who drank, as Hilda didn't anyway, and they were waiting to take their friends out for the night.
It was still relatively early as far as nights went, barely seven o'clock, but that was still late enough that people were missing dinner. Hilda could hear the crinkling of a paper bag from behind her, where Mercedes and Dorothea snacked on sweet and sour chicken balls.
After three more runs of the scene, Sweetpea, their stoic mint-haired director, declared, "I think that's it." They did their best to turn to address the rest of their team, in the wings and in the audience. "I'll see most of you in four days when we join Yuri for a, hopefully less chaotic, rendition of The Storm of Myrddin. Great work."
Hilda whistled loudly in support of her castmates, while her friends applauded and hollered. Dimitri bowed to their audience, and Hubert bowed to Edelgard who rolled her eyes and laughed as she exaggerated with one hand thrown skyward as she and Dimitri made their way down their respective stepladders.
"Thank you, Yuri," called Edelgard.
"Yes, thank you, Yuri," Dimitri agreed.
"We'll practice those low notes next time," Yuri answered, before waving up out of the pit to soften his implied criticisms. "You're welcome! We're getting there. There's a lot of range to cover."
Dimitri was still insecure by the time he joined his castmates in the aisles as they marched to the exit, "Did it sound that bad?"
"No," Claude snickered.
"It's Yuri's job to strive for perfection," Dedue observed.
Hilda held her hand in front of her lips for a moment, considering her contribution. Once they were outside, she jut her elbow into Dimitri's stomach so he grunted in surprise, stumbling back into Felix.
"Eugh!"
"Hey, watch it!"
Hilda shrugged. "Just remember that sensation?"
"Don't be mean," Sylvain exaggerated with a whine, giving Dimitri his sweater he'd been holding onto.
"No, I—" Dimitri tried to mimic the same position his mouth had been in, tongue drooping forward in his mouth as he sought the pitch of his exclamation.
"You broke him," Hubert declared, his brow furrowed, at the same time that Claude, Edelgard and Dedue were following Dimitri's example and carrying a deep monotonous tone.
Edelgard even turned it into a line that Yuri had probably been concerned with, that she would sing below The Rightful King's pleas, "So that none will suffer I must forfend—"
Dorothea answered her with The Rightful King's following line, "Living and dead, I will not forget those whom I defend."
"We're not doing that," Felix said, flat.
"Right," Annette agreed, which seemed to surprise him. "Resting voices."
"Resting voices," several people echoed.
.
They followed Dedue to a Duscur place for dinner, and wolfed down their wraps as they waited in line at a club that might be large enough to accommodate their large group.
"You didn't bring your date?" Lorenz asked Felix.
"We're not dating," Felix said, as if on instinct. He thought a moment. "Wasn't this just for cast?"
Lorenz shared a frown with Hilda before he assured Felix, "I doubt anyone would have complained even if you'd brought someone unrelated to the production. We'd have been happy to—"
"Don't listen to him," Claude said, turning from Leonie so he could wrap an arm around Lorenz. "Or I mean, do, because you could have brought anyone you'd wanted, but also don't because Lorenz just chickened out of asking the other make up artist to join us and hoped they'd have tagged along with Mia."
Felix snorted.
"That's not what happened," Lorenz objected.
"Oh, sweetie," Hilda contributed with a pout. "That's exactly what happened."
"We just got to talking, and I got distracted," Lorenz contributed.
"You forgot?" Felix asked, aghast. Hilda brought her hands to her lips, failing to hide her amusement.
"It didn't come up," Lorenz countered.
"That's not better," Claude said, shaking his head. Lorenz shrugged him off and flicked his chest with all four fingers.
"Fat lot of good friends like you are."
.
The second floor of the club was open to the elements, archways acting as windows to the brisk wind of evening, and the bright shine of sunset. The breeze and drinks were welcome, Mercedes, Dorothea and Hilda taking turns sitting with their pitchers, yellow with alcohol and pink without, to protect them just in case.
Hilda found herself distracted throughout the night, watching Claude as he dipped Lorenz, and nearly dropped Dimitri, and joined Dorothea in a samba that she and Annette were soundly better at.
They danced together only twice, the first time early in the evening before the dancers and the night had hit their stride, when there was more laughter and embarrassment in their fun than indulgence. The second time had been later in the evening, when he was flush and tipsy, to a ballad that had them swaying slowly with his hand politely between her shoulders. She'd thought about stepping closer into his space, resting her head on his chest, facing the brunt of his sweat and his cologne, but hesitated — partially because of their working relationship, but mostly because Sylvain and Mercedes had whistled about the way Hubert had held the small of Edelgard's back and she'd stretched back in a smooth, flowing dip.
It was maybe an hour later that Claude found Hilda seated at a table by a south-facing archway, the dim red of the western horizon a memory of the now fallen sun, the deep blue to the east twinkling with a few visible stars over a small lake and parkland.
"You having a good time?" Claude seemed more sober now than earlier, unlike some of their friends, and Hilda smiled softly, glad of his attention.
She nodded and ran her fingers under her eyes. "Just tired. Worked early before practice, and will again tomorrow."
"I'm glad you made it," Claude said sweetly, and Hilda rolled her eyes as she sucked on a straw from a cup that was mostly ice.
"No one would have missed me," she contributed, her gaze darting to where most of their colleagues were gathered, some of their friendships spanning years and others only as long as auditions, but generally they seemed to feel closer to each other than she really felt to them. So far, anyway.
She felt slower at forming these deep friendships that others seemed instinctually born with. She wondered if she'd know any of these people long enough for that to matter.
"I just said I would've," Claude insisted, crossing his arms as he leaned into the table. His hair was wilting around his face, framing thick eyebrows and dark lashes that half-hid his green eyes. He needed to curl them, Hilda thought idly.
She blushed and pushed at the ice in her glass with her straw. "You just owed me a few drinks for improvising with you in your audition."
Claude chuckled and hid his smile in his elbow for a moment. "That was kind of you," he allowed. He looked at her directly, and promised, "But it's not just that."
"No?" she peeped, half teasing, waiting on the joke or the reveal.
"No," he said at a whisper. "Would you want to come over to my place on one of our free nights? I could make you dinner? We could just run lines, or...?"
"Or?"
Claude blushed and they both snickered softly. He shifted back and forth against the table, forcing himself to sit up, running a hand over his chin, clean shaven for his part in their production.
"Or whatever you like."
His smile widened as she considered it, and she wondered if it was because he wasn't facing instinctual rejection or because he could tell that she was interested. When she nodded, his shoulders fell, as if suddenly relaxed. A lot of people had rules about not dating people they worked with, the risk of rejection and the pain of a breakup always had a chance of hurting a production, but she could see the value of taking a few moments of flattery too far. Even if Claude tucked his heart away from something more, even if they only ran lines, she was looking forward to it.

So, you take a risk, one that almost completely ruins everything and gets you caught out by Roger. And speaking of Roger...
Read PT. 1 here | Read PT. 2 here | Read PT. 3 here | Read PT. 4 here | Read PT. 5 here
(a/n: DOT DOT DOT so I forgot one of the guys names was already William SO I changed creepy future stranger guys name to Weston srry im a mess. also..... this is IT folks FINALLY the roger x reader fluff/smut i have been waiting to write we’ve all been waiting for in this series. its.... something)
Tumblr media
“Are you sure you don’t want me to stay, darling? I can let Roger go on his own, he’s a big boy.”
Freddie was curled up with you on the couch, having forced his way into an impromptu cuddle session with you after he saw that you were bundled up in a blanket, drinking tea and scribbling in your notebook. He felt terrible, seeing as he and Roger were going to a party that night, one you’d opted out of on the claim that you were working on your resume so you could get a better job than the café.
“Freddie, go on,” you laughed, giving him a gentle shove, and he exaggerated your strength as he pretended to nearly fall off the couch before laughing and giving you a shove in return. “Go on, you scoundrels. I’m happy right here.”
Roger was watching from the front hallway, leaning against the wall and smiling at the banter between the two of you. He looked good tonight, mouthwatering, actually – he was clad in one of Freddie’s black silk shirts, only the bottom half of it buttoned, and several necklaces laid across his dainty collarbones. The silk shirt was tucked into leather pants, and he topped it all off with black messenger boots, having refused to put on Freddie’s platform boots for a good part of an hour. There was something missing, though, and you couldn’t put your finger on it until you literally spotted it on the dresser as Freddie passed it, bumping the brim with his shoulder.
Freddie and Roger were about to leave when you scrambled to your feet, calling out, “Hey, wait a minute!” Grabbing the black newsboy cap off of the dresser, you padded over to the two of them, stopping in front of Roger as he raised an eyebrow before ducking his head, letting you put it on for him. “There. Perfect.”
Freddie rolled his eyes playfully before giving your side a pinch and kissing you on the cheek, then flouncing out of the door and leaving you alone with Roger for the moment. Roger watched Freddie with a small grin, then turned back to you, a questioning look in his eye.
“Are you sure you don’t want to go?” he asked, fixing the cap so it laid right on his head. An unruly hair stuck out and caught on the brim of the cap, so you reached up to tuck it back into its original place, smiling.
“I’ll be fine here, Rog. Don’t have too much fun without me, though,” you warned jokingly, and Roger gave you a goofy grin before leaning in and quickly giving you a peck on the cheek, starting out the door.
“Wouldn’t dream of it!”
And with that, he’d closed the door, leaving you in silence as you walked back to the couch, slumping down against it and sighing. It was always nice having the flat to yourself, but tonight you were on edge a bit. Deciding that a nap would be the best to take your thoughts off your mind, you crawled back under the blanket, getting comfortable again as you closed your eyes, dozing off quickly to the sound of cars honking and dogs barking outside your window.
When you woke again, it was significantly darker outside, and you sat up to yawn and stretch, a heavy weight settling over you in the room. You couldn’t put your finger on it, but something was making you uneasy still. Maybe it was the fact you were half a year closer to that day and just as nervous as when you began, or just the fact that you were still planning on completely winging your ‘save the day’ tactic. Or it could have just been the terrible Chinese Roger had basically forced you to eat because he swore up and down that it was the best.
In any case, it was too dangerous to be as confident in your ignorance as you were. But at the same time, you remembered your uncle’s warning that the past would fight back if you were to impose on their daily lives – that’s why he’d urged you to move into this apartment. It provided a decent enough vantage point without letting you interact with the two. You’d cut it close with your mom, but thank God it was in a different part of the city. You were reclusive enough as it was, staying inside all day on Sundays to avoid chancing a run-in with her, seeing as she came to church every single weekend. You’d hoped you could go the whole time without seeing her to make it hurt as little as possible, but that moment in the little market had eliminated any chance of that.
6 months without seeing your mom was rough. Even if she wasn’t mentally there for quite a while before you’d came here, she was still your mom, and to see her suffer like that was hell. It was almost worse being here, but you had to remind yourself that barely any time was passing there. She most likely wouldn’t have even moved an inch by the time you got back, which was horrifying and relieving at the same time. Hopefully, if you managed to pull this off, she would be moving when you got back.
God, the thought of her smile when you got back. You felt a small smile come to your lips as you stood back up, ambling over towards the window to peer out of it. Night had settled in, the streetlights making the front of the church even more ominous as you gazed down at it, humming to yourself. “All for you, mom.”
That’s when you saw them. Both of them, William and Ted, exiting the church, standing on the steps. The street was mostly empty, and they mulled around on the steps as they pulled out packs of cigarettes, lighting up and seeming like they were deep in conversation as you stared at them in mild horror. A faint dizziness took over your senses, but a pinch to your arm by yourself brought you back to reality, and you scrambled to find your shoes and a light jacket before you were flying down the stairs.
What came over you, you had no idea, but you had to get down to that alleyway to hear their conversation. You felt like you owed it to your mom, and you needed to know what type of guys these were before everything went down. As you rounded the last set of stairs, heading down it, you heard Weston’s voice in your head, and you skidded to a stop as your hand came to rest on the door that let outside.
“It can’t be fixed.”
“Oh, fuck you,” you muttered, pushing open the door and stepping out into the cool night air. There they were, right across the street, chumming and smiling like they weren’t some of the scummiest people on this side of the city. They took no note of you as you crossed the street, slinking into the alleyway next to the broad staircase before you settled your back against the cool stone of the wall surrounding the steps, crossing your fingers that they weren’t planning on taking a stroll.
“Stop while you’re ahead. Reset.”
Shaking your head, you pushed Weston’s voice out of your mind again and tried to focus on the two morons that were literally maybe 10 feet from you, just on the other side of this wall. Scooting over to the edge of the wall for optimal listening, you curled up as small as you could, hiding yourself as you started to register the sound of two men talking.
“Yeah, we should be able to get something set up soon.”
A drag from a cigarette. A pause. “Diane said she’d be able to come and help tomorrow.”
Not your mom, but you wondered if it was the same Diane who your mom had brought over for dinner a few times when you were a child. She was frail mentally and physically even in your early years, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when she passed away around your pre-teen years.
“Heh. Diane.” An awfully lecherous snicker was shared between the both of them, and you almost gagged at the sound of it. Honestly, they sounded horrid, and you seriously questioned your mom’s judgement of them as good people in the first place. But then again, this could be how they spoke in private. They probably didn’t have a clue that a 21 year old from 2018 was sitting on the other side of the wall in a pile of trash, spying on them. That didn’t excuse them, of course, but it definitely explained the lack of judgement.
“Did you hear she’s seeing Dan now?” Dan? Your Uncle Dan? You’d never know he dated Diane. This convoluted mess of people was quickly overwhelming you, and you started to feel dizzy as you tried to keep up. “What’s he live, a few blocks over?”
“Yeah. I’d like to pay her a visit right now, know what I mean?”
Eugh. Gag again. One of them cracked up, laughing before you heard the sound of a light stomp, probably putting out a cigarette. “No disrespect to Daniel, but how is he getting it from a girl like that? She is one gorgeous piece of ass, I’d like to-“
You knocked over a can of trash as an earsplitting ringing sound started resounding in your head, making you double over in pain. It took all of your strength not to cry out for help, and in a daze, you crawled over until you were curled up behind a trash can. One of the men’s shadows appeared around the corner moments later, and you held your breath as you tried to recover from the ringing that was slowly fading. Pressing your eyes shut, you felt hot tears rolling down your face, faintly hearing something akin to “Probably a rat getting frisky. Let’s go inside.”
It felt like years as you sat out in that alley, your eyes shut tightly, fighting the ringing, but it was still there, faintly, and you opened your eyes as you sighed in exasperation. But the sigh caught in your throat as you came face to face with your mom, 2018 mom, sitting in a rocking chair across the alleyway.
“You’re saving me and not Diane?” Her voice was eerie, an echo of herself as she tilted her head impossibly far to the side, too far to be a physical reality, and your mouth dropped open in horror as you watched her, unable to move, unable to speak.
As soon as you blinked, she was gone, no evidence of her presence there at all, and you could feel your body scrambling to your feet, although you weren’t cognizant and telling yourself to do so. Leaden feet carried you across the street, hurtling you through the front door of your building, and before you knew it, you were up the stairs. When you rounded the corner to your floor, the nightmare continued.
Your 2013ish era mom and dad were smack dab in the middle of the hallway, screaming at each other. The sound was deafening, like someone had taken a stereo system and put it together in your brain before cranking it up to full volume. Clutching at your ears desperately, you sunk to the floor as you tried to block out the sound of them bickering, but it was no use. They were there, in your brain, screaming their heads off. It felt like you were 15 again, yelling desperately to try and break them apart, but nothing worked. They were too far in, too far gone to go back on what they’d said now. The arguing would go all night long. Your head was pounding as you dug your fingers into the side of your face, more tears spilling out of your eyes as you started to beg, plead for it to stop.
Another blink. They were gone. The sound had stopped abruptly, and you were alone in the hallway. Face wet with salty tears, you glanced around like a trapped animal, spotting a clock on the wall. It was just before midnight – you’d only been out in that alley for maybe 20 minutes. And yet, you were exhausted like you’d just spent a day running nonstop.
Slumping back against the wall, you let more tears run down your face and closed your eyes, your head falling back with a thud against the wall. “Fuck me, Dan wasn’t joking,” you choked out, wiping some mucus out from under your nose with the back of your hand as you tried to take deep breaths and calm down. Understatement of the century, the past will fuck with me .That was a fucking nightmare, not just a casual ‘Don’t do that.’
You could hear someone coming up the stairs and you sighed as you tried to will yourself to your feet, but nothing was happening. All of the energy in your body was gone for the moment – it would take a literal miracle to recharge you.
“Y/N, bloody hell, what happened to you?” Roger’s voice rang clear through the faint buzzing now in your ears, and you looked up at him while shooting him a pitiful attempt at a smile. “You’re bleeding!” His observation was slightly horrified, his worry only amplified by the slightly tipsy state he was in.
“Am I?” you wondered aloud, holding a hand up to your face and coming into contact with a small stream of blood running down the side of your face, pooling near your hair from the angle you’d been holding your head at. Must have been digging my fingers in harder than I thought. “Shit, I am. I’m sorry.”
“Christ, don’t be sorry,” he muttered, crouching down to your level and nearly falling off balance as he did so, holding on to the wall near you before repeating himself. “What happened to you?”
You shrugged, wiping away the rest of your tears before laughing softly at the state of yourself. “I’m a clumsy moron, I guess.” After that, you made finger guns at Roger and started to close your eyes, mortified that he of all people was the one to find you like this. As your eyes fluttered shut, you felt a strong hand encircling your arm and vaguely sensed that Roger was pulling you to your feet, leading you down the hallway back to the flat and pulling you towards the bathroom once you’d gotten inside.
In no time at all, you found yourself perched on the closed toilet lid, Roger cleaning up the blood from the side of your face as he watched you with an apprehensive expression, not sure what to make of finding his roommate out in the hallway, crying and bloody.
“If I didn’t know any better, I’d ask if you were on the rag,” he joked as he dabbed at the side of your face, chuckling when that got a small smile out of you. “Just taking the piss, don’t beat me.” After another pause where you didn’t even attempt to pick up the conversation, just watching him with a guarded stare, he swallowed hard. His cheeks were a bit red from the alcohol in his system, and you could tell he was overheating in the cramped bathroom from the small amount of sweat forming on his forehead. “Y/N, you worry me.”
That made your heart flip as you furrowed your eyebrows, the expression change enough to make Roger pull his hand away shakily and fumble for a band-aid, nervously avoiding what seemed like a critical look from you. “Why are you worried about me?” you asked, genuinely curious as to why this 70’s sexpot of a roommate was even halfway concerned with your well-being when he was literally on his way to becoming one of the biggest rockstars of all time.
“Because,” he mumbled, opening the bandaid and applying it carefully as he avoided your gaze, more for his sake than anything. “You’re my flatmate.” An eyebrow raise from you made him sigh, and he dropped the wrapper in the trash before starting to clean up his mess. “Okay, you really want to know? Because Buzzed Roger is about to get real.”
“Third person,” you reminded him, and he gave you a nasty look before starting to wash his hands, clearing his throat.
“You go and work all hours of the day, write a bunch of shit in your notebook when you’re here, we have to beg you to come out with us, and when you do, you end up leaving early or…. or, I don’t know, like that one night, when you ran off with that old guy without checking in with us, and then came back looking like you’d just been through the wringer!”
“Didn’t know I had to check in with you before I left with a guy,” you replied, almost in a haze as you watched him dry his hands, looking at you with an unfathomable expression.
“Well, damn it, you should!” he replied irritably, throwing the towel down on the counter. The sudden outburst actually shocked you, and it must have registered on your face as well, because he was immediately apologizing out of his ass for freaking out. “Shit, no, I’m sorry, god damn it, I just found you all beat up in the hallway and now I’m yelling at you, just hit me, I’m such a knobhead-“
“God, Roger, I’m fine, breathe,” you interrupted, climbing up off the toilet and coming over to look at yourself in the mirror. “Woof.”
“Woof?” he repeated, also looking at you in the mirror. Your face was tear stained, but free of blood, and the redness around the rim of your eyes had mostly disappeared by now. He thought you looked as adorable as ever. Sure, you were a bit messy from your brief stint as a spy, but he didn’t know that, and he marveled at the way you managed to make his heart skip a beat even when you were fresh from crying.
“Just looking a bit rough, is all,” you murmured, wiping at your under-eyes before sighing and making your way out into the hallway, headed for the kitchen. “How was the party?”
Your attempt to change the subject was not lost on Roger, even as drunk as he was, but he chose to mostly ignore it since it seemed to bother you when he’d asked about it. Instead, he followed you to the kitchen, watching you grab two glasses of water. “It was alright. Freddie’s fucking plastered and left without me, so I came back here ‘cause…” he trailed off, shrugging and pursing his lips a bit.
“Because why?” you asked, taking a drink of your water before you handed him his, which he accepted gratefully. The smile on his face as he took a drink rejuvenated you a bit, making you feel less dead, so you decided to crack a joke to see if he bit. “You miss me?”
“No!” he replied defensively, an even deeper red covering his cheeks as you sipped at your water, just watching him. Getting no reaction was even worse than getting a bad one to him, and he stuttered as he fell over his next words, a certified hot mess in a silk shirt and leather pants. “I didn’t mean no like that, God, I meant- I came back because- ugh! Fine. Yes, okay? I missed you. I wanted you to be there with us. It made me sad when I thought of you being here all alone, without us, without me and Fred.”
Despite feeling like you’d just crawled up through the crust of the Earth, you couldn’t help but smile slyly at that, forgetting all about the nights events. “Roger Taylor missing me? I feel honored.”
“You should,” he muttered, taking another drink and trying to hide his embarrassment with a biting tone as he avoided eye contact once again. “I don’t even have to ask if you missed me, I already know the answer to that one. Freddie misses me even when I’m gone for two minutes, so you? You were probably missing me before I got out of the door.”
“Well, someone’s got an ego,” you mumbled, finishing your water before sitting the glass in the sink. Roger laughed at your comment, following you as you made your way to the couch, grabbing your hand and trying to tug you to your feet when you attempted to lay down. “Hey, I’m trying to sleep here. Obviously, I’ve had a rough night.” Although you had obviously had a terrible night, you secretly hoped he would disregard your words and stay, or something similar to that.
And he did. He mocked your voice in a high-pitched imitation as he wrapped his other hand around yours, pulling you to your feet. “You’re mad if you think I’m going to let you sleep on the couch tonight. You’ve had a rough night.”
Groaning playfully as you let him raise you back to a standing position, you followed him down the hall, smiling far too widely at the feeling of his hand around yours. “Rog, you don’t have to share your bed with me. I’m fine.”
“Tell that to the bandaid on your face.” Rolling your eyes, you followed as he led you into his room, letting you go sooner than you’d wanted him to, and you gave him a teasing deadpan look before you crawled into his bed, grumbling playfully. “Oh, don’t pretend you aren’t happy to sleep in a bed for once.”
“You’re not wrong, actually.” You had to laugh at that, and as you laid down on your back on the far end of the bed, Roger chuckled and began to unbutton his shirt. He strolled over to the closet as you watched him, silently admiring the ripple of his understated muscles under his skin as he shrugged the shirt off, tossing it into the closet before starting to unbutton his pants. Out of politeness, you shifted your eyes up to the ceiling – as much as you would enjoy the view, you had to restrain yourself. “If you really wanted to know, yes, I did miss you once you guys were gone.”
“I told you, I already knew,” he teased, crawling into bed once he’d gotten in to boxers and a tshirt. When you scoffed and rolled over to face away from him, he laughed and tugged you back down to your original laying position, propping his head up on his hand and he looked down at you. “Don’t ignore me. I can kick you out of here lickety-split, sweetheart.”
“You wouldn’t do that. You’re too much of a softie,” you snickered, pulling the covers up over your shoulders as you turned on your side to face him, clutching the edge of his duvet.
Raising an eyebrow at that, he gave you an almost insulted look before he spoke. “Roger Taylor, a softie? I’ll have you know-“
“When will you ever stop talking in the third person?” That irritated him a bit, and you could tell from the way his mouth twitched as he tried to calm down and not say something snarky back.
“You’re being real mouthy for such a weak thing, you know that?” he asked, sitting up a bit on his elbow and daring you with his eyes to talk back. It was almost like he wanted to you to, like the banter was fueling him, getting him closer and closer to snapping.
So, you did. “Weak thing? That’s rich, coming from you.”
Now he was pissed. “You little rotter, you- I ought to…” he trailed off, his knuckles turning white as he clenched his fist, searching for the right words to say. But nothing was coming to mind, not until you prompted him.
“You ought to what, tough guy? Shut me up? I’ll have you know my right hook is mean and-“
Roger’s hand clamped over your mouth all of a sudden, silencing you immediately and making your eyes widen a bit as he stared you down with something unmistakable in his eyes. You’d seen it before, but never quite this pronounced. Hunger. A ravenous hunger, almost to the point of lasciviousness. But there was still a fondness in the way he held your jaw, his fingertips just tight enough to silence you but nowhere near tight enough to leave any marks. And then his fingertips moved away, uncovering your mouth and quickly running over the small bandaid on the side of your face, his breath hitting your lips and smelling of alcohol and something minty. His thumb stroked at your chin once, then took a hold of it with his thumb and index finger before leaning down over you and pressing his lips to yours.
He was impossibly gentle with his kiss to contrast that fierce look you’d just witnessed, testing the waters before he got in too deep, and that set your skin on fire. You tangled with the fact that Roger Taylor, your roommate of 6 months and currently one of your closest friends on top of being a future fucking rockstar, was kissing you. It took you more than a moment to realize you’d been frozen in your spot, but when you did finally realize, you moved your hand up to his wrist and halfway wrapped your fingers around it, barely gripping his arm as you kissed back while your brain was going haywire at the current situation.
Gentle kisses quickly gave way to frenzied, impetuous kisses, the overwhelming smell of alcohol and Roger’s cologne more intoxicating that any liquor you’d ever tried before. His hands explored your body languidly, taking his time touching and feeling anything he could get his hands on. You were about the same, your hands sneaking underneath the back of his shirt and coming to rest on the heated skin of his back as he slipped his tongue into your mouth, swirling it around yours and eliciting a quiet purr of appreciation from you in response.
That perked him right up, making him double his efforts as he moved his hands to your ass, gripping it and pulling you on top of him as he rolled onto his back. Straddling his hips, you pulled away to catch your breath and sat up, Roger’s heavy eyelids fluttering open to find you pulling your shirt off and looking down at him, panting ever-so-slightly from the breath-taking makeout session you’d just engaged in.
Really, he didn’t say much, but his demeanor and expression gave everything away as his hands came to rest on your thighs, his eyes devouring every inch of skin you’d exposed by the simple action. And then he was pulling his shirt off too, tossing it to the side as you pulled your bralette off, hissing at the cool air that suddenly directly hit your nipples.
The feeling didn’t last long, however, for Roger sat up and immediately started to place sloppy kisses along your collarbone, making his way down until he left an open-mouthed kiss to one of your nipples, teasing the other with his thumb and making you shiver. Running a hand into his hair, your let your eyes flutter shut as you zoned out, reveling in the feeling of Roger’s mouth on you, hot and desperate.
For a moment, you questioned whether doing this was okay in the grand scheme of things. After all, what if this was the magnum opus of fuck-ups you could do here? But then Roger’s hand ghosting up your thigh before grabbing your ass distracted you, making you breathe out his name in surprise before pressing your ass back against his hand. His grip tightened just a bit when your hips shifted over his and your clothed core briefly passed over his cock, which was beginning to strain against his boxers a bit.
“God, do that again,” he mumbled against your chest, resting his forehead against your collarbones as you began to grind down against him, his hands flying to your hips to guide you in just the right way to drive him crazy. Soon enough, his hips were rutting up against you, needy for any kind of friction he could get. The two of you rocked against each other, getting yourselves off just on the feeling of what could happen if those layers of clothes were eliminated.
Sooner or later, you supposed you’d seen this coming – you and Roger – but never did you imagine it would be so impromptu. Sure, you’d done your fair share of flirting back and forth, but this had been so out of the blue. Perhaps it was due to the fact that he was still slightly intoxicated and you were at your most vulnerable, but you didn’t care anymore. All you cared about was getting all of Roger, skin on skin, body to body, fully being one with him.
“Rog,” you almost moaned, tugging his hair back so he’d look up at you. With a half-focused grunt, he raised his eyes to yours as he slowed down his hips, looking delectably keyed-up with his fucked out eyes and parted lips. “Have you got a condom?” you asked, taking his face in your hands so he’d focus completely on you. Nodding as his shaky, irregular breaths hit your lips, he licked his lips and nodded over to the desk.
“Top left drawer, to the left in the very back,” he managed to say, hardly wanting to let go of your hips but doing so once you pressed a kiss to the corner of his lips before crawling off of him. He watched as you went, pushing his boxers down and off without tearing his eyes away from the curve of your ass that was peeking out from under your shorts, which you dropped to the floor on the way to the desk, leaving you only in some panties that left even less to his imagination. Digging through the drawer, you finally found one and snatched it up, putting it between your teeth before shimmying out of your panties too as you turned to face Roger again.
A small smile played at the corner of his lips as you made eye contact, and you found yourself blushing as you took the condom wrapper out of your mouth, carefully making your way back over to him and trying to subdue the redness of your cheeks. Coming to kneel between his legs, you tore the package open with the help of your teeth and pulled the condom out, glancing up at him to find him watching your hands with interest. So, you looked back down and started to roll the latex on to his impossibly hard member, keeping your touch light, which made him squirm a bit and grip the sheets until you’d gotten it on fully. Then you threw your leg over his hips, straddling him again and leaning forward to meet him for a kiss, which he eagerly reciprocated.
His hand took on a firm grip of the nape of your neck, keeping your lips against his as he wrapped his other arm around your waist, flipping the two of you so that he now had you pinned down to the mattress. Taking his cock in his hand, he ran the tip along your folds, velvety smooth and practically dripping at this point. You moaned into his mouth when he pressed the tip against your entrance, wrapping your arms around him and trying to press his hips closer to yours, which he took as an invitation to push into you. A strained groan left his mouth as he pulled away from the kiss, and when he bottomed out, you felt him still for a moment inside of you.
After a short and sweet pause, he started moving again, beginning to thrust in and out of you at an initially unhurried pace. All he focused on at the moment was the small whimpers and moans of appreciation that were leaving your lips irregularly, making him groan your name as he rolled his hips achingly slow, wanting to savor the moment.
But you couldn’t stand it. The suspense was killing you – you needed the frenzy, the rushed passion, or you’d get lost in your thoughts again, and you didn’t want to ruin this moment. So, you rolled your hips up to meet his thrust, letting his head fall into the crook of your neck before you murmured in his ear, “Fuck me, Roger. Let me have it.”
He trembled at the sound of your voice, nearly failing to support his weight on his arms before he nodded, breathlessly pressing a kiss to your shoulder. Then he began to thrust faster, harder, and the sweet, high-pitched moans that you let go were enough to make Roger let out a string of curses before burying his face in your neck, panting harshly as he dug one of his hands into your hips, pounding into you at a feverish pace.
“Oh my god, Roger,” you breathed out, curling up your fingers in his hair and against his back as you felt your eyes flutter shut. Your back arched up in pleasure when he angled his hips, thrusting deeper and slower for a moment, and an almost-pornographic moan tumbled out of you, gaining an equally sinful moan from Roger in response.
“You’re so fucking hot,” he mumbled between pants, trailing love bites along your shoulder before snapping his hips forward and eliciting a surprised cry of pleasure that was sure to wake up all of the neighbors. “Wish I could have fucked you senseless the moment I met you.”
“Wouldn’t have been opposed,” you laughed brokenly, cut off by another snap of his hips that buried him deep inside of you. “Oh my god¸ you’re-“
You cut off as you felt a shiver run up your spine from the feeling of Roger moving his hands to your shoulder as he sat up a bit, using your shoulder as leverage so he could continue to thrust deep into you. He was still sweating, probably worse now, but so were you, so you didn’t mind. His hair was an absolute mess from your desperate tugs on it, and he looked about as close to an orgasm as you did.
“I’m what?” he asked, slowing down his hips for a moment and expertly rolling them as he watched you expectantly. It took all of your remaining brain functions to try and remember what you were going to say, too focused on the way he filled you with each thrust to recall the whole thing.
“I said you’re so good,” you breathed out, and with a low moan that caused another shiver to run down your spine, Roger sped up gradually, sending all of your senses haywire as you neared your high. “I’m close, Rog.”
“Let go, sweetheart,” he groaned, gazing down at you through heavily lidded eyes as he steadied his pace, reaching down to rub your clit on top of that. The overstimulation was enough to send you over the edge, and you squeezed your eyes shut as you came, Roger still pounding away into you while you chanted his name like a prayer, over and over, experiencing probably one of the best orgasms you’d ever had.
Roger felt himself getting sloppy as he watched you ride out your high, and a strangled groan left his lips as he sped up his thrusts, chasing his own high in the wake of yours. You opened your eyes finally to see how close he was, so you wrapped your legs around his hips and dug your heels into his back, pressing his hips towards your as you tugged him down for another kiss again. “Come for me, please, Rog,” you begged between kisses, Roger only responding with a broken moan before he pulled away from the kiss completely He thrusted into you a few more times before letting out a long, drawn-out moan and spilling out into his condom, rocking his hips forward a few times to ride out his own high.
“Y/N… oh god, Y/N,” he panted, resting his forehead on yours as he finished himself off. Reluctantly pulling out once he was done, he crawled off you to dispose of the condom, coming back with a towel from his closet to clean you up. You closed your eyes, throwing an arm over them as he did so, absolutely exhausted from the whole day, and almost found yourself dozing off before he crawled back into bed with you, still completely naked but far more satisfied than before. His arms wrapped around your waist, pulling you into a spooning position with him, but it seemed more intimate than anything. The fact that you two were still completely nude didn’t seem to arouse any overtly sexual feelings – you just wanted to be in his arms, and he just wanted you in his arms. It was mutual, the unspoken affection between the two of you – no words needed to be said as he pressed a small kiss to your shoulder before settling in and pulling the blanket over the two of you.
You didn’t even have to say goodnight, the both of you just dozing off in each other’s company. For two people who could never shut up around and about each other, you were, for the first time, completely silent, just happy to be alive, and happy to be in love. Love? Am I in love with him? God, how scary is that? Roger made a quiet noise in his sleep and twitched a bit, pulling you closer and nuzzling your shoulder.  So worth it, though.

[ 365 Days of SasuHina || Day One Hundred Forty-Six: It’s All a Sham ] [ Uchiha Sasuke, Hyūga Hinata ] [ SasuHina ] [ Verse: Best Years of Your Life ] [ AO3 Link ]
He’s never wanted to do anything like this. But damn it, he’s getting fed up, and after thinking the subject around and around in circles in his head, Sasuke can only come up with one solution.
If he wants to get all these girls off his back, stalking him and annoying him, he’s got to get himself a girlfriend.
Only one problem...he doesn’t want a girlfriend. And he has no idea who he’d even ask to fill that role (falsely, of course) who wouldn’t simultaneously drive him crazy because they’re one of the very girls he’s trying to avoid!
And he doesn’t dare ask anyone for help - his brother would call the move shallow, and Naruto would never let it go. He just needs...a stand in! Someone he can point to as an excuse to avoid the crowds of girls (and admittedly some guys) that are clamoring to date him. Can’t date someone if he’s already taken, right?
...well, at least by his own personal preference.
He doesn’t judge. One girl would just be...enough. More than enough, really. Too much.
But what else can he do?
And that’s only the first part of his dilemma. The second question is whether or not he should just...fess up to it to start with. Cuz yeah, leading a girl on and not telling her the actual reason they’re ‘dating’ just feels...crummy. But could he actually get someone to agree to that…? Cuz...it’d be fake. All a sham. A little act to grant him some peace of mind. Would someone really want to go to that length for him? What if they decided they wanted to date someone else?
Ugh...so complicated...but you wouldn’t think it would be, right?
Sitting in his room, Sasuke reclines in his desk chair, leafing slowly through his yearbook. He’s a senior, now. Kind of...hard to believe. But with everything he’s going to have going on, he just...wants a little peace. Not have to worry about all these people who can’t take no for an answer.
So, he’s looking over his choices.
He’d prefer someone in his own year. So that nixes three-quarters of the school’s population right off the bat, which...isn’t all that large to begin with. He’s got two hundred people in his year. About half of that are girls, which...are the only people he’d consider doing this with. He’s already had to suffer through the mental imagery of what Naruto would pull if he broke down and asked his best friend to fake with him.
Eugh.
Besides, he actually does like girls, just...none of the ones that are constantly throwing themselves at him. While there’s nothing wrong with liking guys, he just...doesn’t.
Skimming over another page, he can place most of these faces...simply because they pester him so darn much. Grimacing at most of them, he’s almost starting to wonder if there’s anyone he can try this with.
...and then he sees her.
Hinata. A little on the short side, a little on the curvy side. Neither of which bother him. Long dark hair, pale eyes, rounded cheeks.
Huh...she’s kinda cute.
And also...a problem.
See, he happens to know she’d be one of the few - if not the only - girls that aren’t the sort to bother him. But...the reason he knows that is because she’s been crushing on Naruto hard since they were kids.
Which means...she’d probably never go for it. Not if it meant lowering her chances of being with Naruto.
Even if...Naruto is already (and has been for a long, long time) fixated on Sakura.
Who...happens to be very much infatuated with Sasuke.
And Sasuke wants nothing to do with her.
It’s so stupidly complicated.
Sasuke sighs, fiddling with the edge of the page. Could he...spin it somehow? Maybe...tell her she’d make Naruto want her more by making him...jealous? Only problem is...that’s a lie. Naruto has no intention of being with anyone but Sakura. He probably wouldn’t even notice if Hinata dated someone else. The only reason he would in this case is because it would be Sasuke, his best friend, dating her.
And he doesn’t want to lie to her. She’s too nice for that. Already he’s pretty much made up his mind that he doesn’t want to have the fake pretense of actually asking anyone out. They have to be privy to it, too. Especially someone like Hinata.
But how to get her to agree…?
At least he can also be pretty sure that - if she does say no - she probably won’t tell anyone about his little scheme, and thus spoiling the effort completely. He...sort of knows her. At least generally enough. And he doubts she’s the sort to be that mean. Maybe she’s just nice enough to take pity on him and agree?
...only one way to find out.
The coming school day, he casually tries to seek her out. But how to get her alone to ask...he doesn’t want to be overheard, after all. And surely anyone looking on would assume what he’s doing, given he’d be trying to talk to her privately. Sure, that’d work in his favor...if she agreed. And he can’t know if she will. He has a few classes with her, but those are neither private, nor the right time.
After school seems to be his best shot.
Sasuke bobs and weaves through the crowds, struggling to get to his locker and prepare to leave before she does. Slinging his bag over a shoulder, he stands on his toes to try and spot her.
There!
Sneaking his way forward, he manages to break the gap as she says goodbye to a few guys he vaguely knows. Oh...she’s not dating one of them, is she? Uh -
“...Sasuke?”
Well, crap. No backing out now.
Blinking, it takes him a moment to respond. “...Hinata.”
Her brow wilts a hair, looking a bit...confused as to why he’s here. It’s not like they really chat much idly unless they happen to be in the same group. “Do you...do you need something?”
Another pause. “Uh...kinda, yeah. Look, can I...talk to you?”
“...we are talking.”
“I mean somewhere more, uh...private.”
...now she looks very confused. “Um...sure?”
They slip into a nearby classroom, thankfully vacant of both students and staff. “Look, uh…” Maybe he should have practiced this first… “I’ve been having some...problems.”
“...okay…?”
A hand runs back through his hair. This isn’t at all what he’s really trying to say. “...you know Sakura?”
“Yes.”
“You know how she’s sorta, uh...into me?”
That earns a small laugh...which she quickly cuts off, going pink. “I-I’m sorry -”
“It’s fine. Uh...you see, she just...she won’t leave me alone! And she’s not the only one! I’ve got all these...people coming up to me, trying to...to get me to date them!”
Torn between guilty amusement and clear confusion, Hinata waits for more explanation.
“So...I thought that a way to maybe, uh...get them off my back would be to, uh...to…” This is so going to sound weird. “...pretend to date someone else.”
A blink. Then her expression slowly shifts to surprise. “...you...you mean me?”
“I know how this sounds, and - it’s not that I don’t like you! Actually, you’re a really nice person. And that’s sort of why I’m asking, cuz...well, most people I know wouldn’t be. Not saying that I, uh...that I don’t think you’d make someone a good girlfriend, I just -”
“Sasuke.” Hinata cuts him off gently, and then can’t help another small laugh. “...I think I understand.”
“...you do?”
“You just...need someone to pose as a girlfriend so you can turn them all down gently...right?”
“...something like that.”
Hinata seems to consider that.
“You aren’t, uh...seeing someone already, are you?”
“Me? Oh, n-no. No, I…” She wilts. “...I think you and I b-both know how that’s going…”
Well, that answers his earlier question. “...sorry.”
“Don’t be…” Hinata heaves a gentle sigh. “There’s only so much one can k-kid themselves...right?”
He’s...not sure how to answer that.
“...all right. I’ll do it.”
“You...you will?”
“I don’t see the h-harm. It’s not like I have anything to lose,” she giggles softly. “We could just...do things as friends. And...have people think otherwise. You know, like...see a movie every so often. Get lunch. Friends can do that! Everyone else will just assume it’s...something else.”
Friends...he wasn’t aware she considered him a friend. “Yeah, that’s...that’s exactly what I was going for.” Sasuke can’t help a relieved grin. “Okay...cool. Thank you, Hinata. Hopefully it’ll get people to just...give me a little space. I’ve got too much else to worry about senior year to want to deal with that.”
She gives him a sympathetic smile. “Yeah...I understand. So, um...how should we...spread the word?”
“I’ll let it slip to Naruto tomorrow. With him on it, I’m sure the whole school will know by lunch. Then we’ll just...start the little charade.”
Another laugh. “You know...this actually sounds a little...exciting! Like we’re spies, playing a role to blend in and complete our mission!”
Sasuke can’t help a snort. “Yeah, something like that.”
...that was actually really cute.
“A-anyway, I...I hate to just run, but I have volleyball practice…”
“Oh, no problem! I better get home and get homework done, anyway.”
“Okay!”
“Thanks again, Hinata. Seriously...you’re a lifesaver.”
“No problem! See you tomorrow...boyfriend,” she giggles, letting him open the classroom door and heading down the hall toward the locker rooms.
He watches her go, taking a long moment to realize he’s grinning. Another moment to...realize why.
...oh no. No, no. This is an act. A joke.
He is not going to end up liking her!
Teehee :3c This is a fun concept I hinted at in...another piece I couldn't find, whoops. This one isn't related to it, but I've wanted to do this lil trope ever since! Hopefully another prompt will let me give it a part two, cuz...that's when it'll get good! But for today I just had time to sort of...intro the idea. The lovely limits of writing things daily, lol      Anywho, it's late, I'ma go sleep! Thanks for reading~

one of those days
where I woke up feeling physically and emotionally low as fuck, and I ended up cuddling with my dad for the better part of an hour once he woke up.  Eugh.  It’s subsided somewhat now that it’s the afternoon, but still hard to shake.  Don’t have much of a taste for food today -- haven’t in a couple of days, actually, which I hate and just feeds my depression.  Please level the fuck out, medication.
Also: I’m finally going to see a GI specialist tomorrow morning to hopefully get an endoscopy and figure out if there’s something he can give me that will fix my stomach.  But: seeing a doc/having a procedure is likely to provoke Big Anxiety.  Sooooooo wish me luck.
Also: as of right now, the plan is for us to drive back up to Boston for Thanksgiving next Wednesday and for me to stay there after that, but if you ask me today?  I don’t feel ready.  My mom reassured me that I could stay and we didn’t have to even go to Boston at all if I don’t want to... but I suppose I’ll see how I feel early next week.

Ugh, I didn’t exactly go out today after all. My mum came home from work but she had a headache so I didn’t want to burden her with everything.
She does know about my phone sitcho however. And she just suggested that I look online for one. That was a great idea until I actually started looking around for one. Gonna add a read more because, hoo boi, do I have a lot to say...
I started with EE’s online store - that was an absolute disaster. I just wanted a phone that I could pay for up-front that I could simply throw my sim card into. But no, all they had was pay-monthly phones, and they didn’t even have the one I wanted. That was the start of my rampage.
Then I checked other places like Argos & Carphone Warehouse. That proved to also be a fucking disaster. Argos barely had any phones that were; - Affordable - The brand I wanted - In stock.
And Carphone Warehouse... Eugh. Don’t get me started. They had the brand I wanted (Huawei, my current phone is the best I’ve had so I trust that brand) but literally nothing was available. Worse yet, I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t add anything to my basket until I realised that they didn’t sell the phones I was looking for - they literally had no indication of that on their site at all!!
So eventually after some more digging I found the phone model I wanted on Amazon (yeah, I know. Amazon BAD & all that. Don’t judge me though, I need a phone..) and just bought a used one that was advertised as being good as new. The only problem is it won’t be here until Saturday... The dealer’s based in Essex, so hopefully it might not take as long to get here? That’s very wishful thinking though.
Anyway, everthing’s pretty much sorted now. I got my phone fairly cheap too, it only cost me £105. I would’ve been paying close to £180 for a brand new one otherwise. And I bought some screen protectors!! They’ll be arriving tomorrow, which is kinda gonna rub salt in the wounds but at least I’ll be able to apply one as soon as I get my phone.
I’m so stressed out though, I need a smoke. Thankfully Kai’s coming over after work & we’re getting some, and he’s gonna get us some KFC which’ll hopefully cheer me up, bless him.
I think that’s all I have to say for now, I needed to vent properly here. This whole situation is stupid af but the sooner everything’s done & dusted, the better.

Be My Player 2? Ch. 27
Happy season 7 y'all!! My emotions were pulled in about 10 million different directions over the course of 13 episodes and if any of y'all need some emotional healing, hopefully this can help haha.
I'd also like to take a minute to say that earlier this week, this fic celebrated it's second birthday and it's unbelievable to me that this fic is two years old and has come so far. The response to this has been absolutely incredible and I'd like to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to read it and here's to many more chapters as I continue this story!
Also on AO3!
Keith breathed a sigh of relief when he walked out onto the floor of the restaurant and spotted George behind the bar. He’d spent all morning working on homework and he was practically braindead, knowing he’d have no energy to deal with persistent coworkers if he’d been stuck with Kayla on his shift.
George looked up as he approached and smiled. “I was starting to think you weren’t going to show.”
Keith stifled a yawn and swung around behind the counter. “Sorry. I’m not trying to be lazy on purpose. Getting back into the swing of school has just been tougher than usual so I’m really glad you’re the one I’m working with tonight.”
“Thanks, I guess?” he said with a chuckle as he set a drink on one of the available trays and picked up a new ticket. “I feel like I should be insulted by that.”
“You shouldn’t be,” Keith said. “I could use a friend around while at work.”
George paused, his eyebrows furrowing. “Everything’s okay with you and Shiro, right?” he asked.
Keith blinked and grinned. “Yeah, of course! We’re doing really great actually and are probably going to watch a movie after I get off tonight. Although with how I’m feeling I might fall asleep before we even get started.”
George relaxed. “Good. I’d hate for the two of you to be having relationship troubles on top of all the other stress you’ve got going on.”
“Nah,” Keith said fondly as his brain sifted through memories of his boyfriend. “We’re really good. I’m just waiting for Spring Break to get here so I can see him again.”
“How are you handling being separated?”
Keith let out a breath and readied the bottles for the drink he was making. “The first few days were rough. It’s gotten a little easier since we both have things we have to do, but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t rather have him around.”
George nodded. “I can imagine. Vacation will be here before you know it and you’ll be back together again.”
“Yeah…” Keith said, more than a little wistfully. He glanced over at George and saw his knowing smirk, snapping him out of his thoughts. “School and work will make it feel like time flies by. I won’t have a second to spare to sit around and miss Shiro.”
George chuckled. “Yeah, hold onto that. Don’t let yourself lose that spunk. You’re going to need it.”
“Don’t I know it,” Keith grumbled.
George grinned, and they continued working in silence. Keith was glad to give his brain a little bit of a break from any form of mental strain. He could pretty much make every drink in a daze at this point. He didn’t need to focus on his work as much as he did when he got started as a bartender since the craft was second nature to him now.
Maybe he could convince Hunk and Pidge to buy a ton of booze and he could mix drinks for them. It probably wouldn’t get them drunk as quickly as straight shots of vodka and tequila, but he knew it would be fun nonetheless.
The night and the orders coming in were slow for a Saturday, but Keith wasn’t complaining. It was better than a rush they couldn’t control, and he hoped it would last for the rest of the night.
George passed him a glass as he pulled bottles of alcohol from under the counter, mixing the drink before setting it next to the ticket on the tray. George took his dirty mixers and dumped them into the sink, sticking his hands into the soapy water to start washing as Keith hung to the side and waited for the next drink to come in.
He sighed and crossed his arms, eyes roving over the few tables of patrons he could see from his place behind the bar. He let his mind start to wander now that he didn’t have anything to focus on.
~~
Keith dug his hands into his jacket pockets as he slipped out of the back door of the restaurant. The sky was dark, and the kitchen staff were doing their last rounds of cleaning before they got to leave for the night. Keith didn’t envy that kind of work when he got to leave so much sooner than they did. He also didn’t have to come in as early since they had kitchen prep, too.
The snow and salt that was still left on the sidewalks crunched under his feet as he walked back to his place. For once, he wasn’t in much of a hurry and the cold wasn’t bothering him too much despite being in the throes of winter.
Keith’s head tilted back, and he looked up between the buildings. He couldn’t make out any of the stars and the moon’s light was muted behind the clouds that hung over the city. It was supposed to snow again that night and he hoped it wouldn’t be too deep when he had to leave for work the next day.
His breath puffed out between his lips and he turned his gaze back to the sidewalk. He walked past a few strangers who were out, but they all kept to themselves, eyes focused on the walk in front of them. Keith didn’t mind. Interacting with strangers was one of his least favorite things to do.
Keith pulled his keys from his pocket as he jogged up the steps to his apartment building. He unlocked the door and pushed inside, the warmth of the building enveloping him like a hug. He hurried up the stairs to his floor, knocking the lingering salt and snow off his shoes before he walked into his place.
He threw his coat over the back of the couch and started stripping out of his work clothes as he walked into his bedroom. He changed into a pair of broken-in sweats and threw on a hoodie. The cold hadn’t been so bad when he was outside, but a chill still managed to linger in his bones now that he was in the confines of his home.
He pulled the sleeves of his hoodie down so they were almost over his hands and grabbed his computer, climbing into bed. He pulled his blanket around him as he started up his laptop and snuggled down inside the fabric. It was slow to start, and he drummed his fingers on the casing as he waited for the different programs to load.
Keith’s phone vibrated next to him and he picked it up, smiling when he saw it was Shiro texting him.
Shiro: You home?
Keith: Yup. I’m getting my computer set up now.
Shiro: Great! I’ll get rabbit set up and you can join my room when you get on there.
Keith: Sure
He leaned forward and adjusted the pillows behind him before he slouched down, trying to get more comfortable. His computer felt so slow and he wanted everything to load so he could get to Shiro.
Finally, after too long, he was able to open his web browser and pull up rabbit. There was already a notification waiting from Shiro and he clicked on it, taking him to Shiro’s room where Netflix was up on the screen.
He clicked on the mic, impatient as it took a couple seconds to calibrate and connect properly.
“Hey,” he said, probably a little too gruffly.
“Hey, baby,” Shiro said. “How are you?”
“Tired,” he sighed.
“Busy night?”
“Not really, actually. It was pretty slow. At least for me and George. But the amount of homework I had this morning and then work was a strain and I’m exhausted.”
“I’m sure it’ll get better.”
“Yeah,” Keith sighed. “I’m just ready to spend a nice night with you and watch a movie. I’ll warn you now though that I might fall asleep.”
Shiro chuckled and it made something warm curl in Keith’s chest.
“I think I can forgive you this time,” he said. “Are you going to be busy tomorrow?” he asked.
“I’ve got work tomorrow night, but my morning should be free. What’s up?”
“Well…” he said, and Keith could hear the grin in his voice and thinly veiled excitement. “I figured since we’re getting close we should book your plane tickets.”
“Close being a relative term?” Keith asked with a chuckle.
“Close in terms of needing to make travel planes,” he said.
“Okay,” Keith said. “It’s a date.”
“Not a very romantic date,” Shiro grumbled.
Keith shrugged even though he couldn’t see him. “It’s the best we can do right now. But if you really want something romantic, we can watch a rom-com tonight.”
“Eugh,” Shiro said and Keith could almost see his grimace. “No thanks. I think I’ll be the nerd I am and watch some sci-fi.”
“Took the words right out of my mouth, babe,” Keith said, letting himself sink back into his mattress. The cold was starting to recede, replaced by a strong warmth that spread from his chest.
“Does this mean I get to pick the movie?” Shiro asked.
“Sure,” Keith said, grinning. “But you better make it good.”
He watched as Shiro scrolled through Netflix, going through the shows and films suggested for him. He clicked on one and read the description.
“This sound good?” he asked.
“Sure,” Keith said, unable to stifle a yawn.
Shiro chuckled and hit play. “Don’t fall asleep on me.”
“No promises,” Keith said, lazy grin pulling at his lips. “You’d physically have to be here to stop me.”
Shiro hummed as the intro to the movie started to play. Keith was more focused on the sound of Shiro’s voice than what was happening on the screen in front of him. “If I was there with you then I wouldn’t mind letting you sleep.”
Keith huffed a laugh. “And why’s that?” he asked.
“Because,” Shiro said. “I’d be able to hold you and watch you sleep. I’d know you’re getting the rest you need and not working yourself to death.”
The warmth in Keith’s chest spread. “Well, you’re just going to have to trust me for now.”
“I know,” Shiro sighed. “And I do, but…”
“But?” Keith prompted.
“But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t much rather have you here with me.”
“And I’d much rather be there with you,” Keith agreed. “But we still have another month and a half before that’s going to happen.”
“Keith?”
“Yeah?”
There was a pause, the only sound between them coming from the movie on the screen.
“I love you.”
Keith smiled and snuggled further under his blanket. “I love you, too.”
Shiro’s laugh was soft and sounded giddy. Keith was feeling the same.
“If you get too tired, let me know and I can shut off the movie and let you sleep.”
“Okay,” Keith said.
He looked at the screen but wasn’t really seeing what was going on. Not that it mattered all that much.
~~
Keith grumbled when his alarm went off. He reached for it, swatting his hand on the bedside table until he found his phone and was able to pick it up to shut it off. He yawned and rubbed at his eyes, trying to fight through the lingering sleep that wanted to pull him back to his dreams.
He forced himself to sit up and sat there, looking around his room as he tried to get his thoughts in order. There was a chill to the air that he’d been able to ignore under the blanket and he wrapped his arms around himself, wanting to fall back into bed go to sleep.
He grabbed his hoodie he’d discarded the night before and tugged it on, crossing his arms over his chest as another violent chill moved through his body.
“What the hell,” he grumbled, climbing out of bed. He flinched when his feet hit the wood floor and cold seeped into the bottoms of his feet.
He tiptoed over to his dresser and pulled out a pair of socks, awkwardly balancing to shove them onto his feet. He hurried into his living room and checked the thermostat, gaping when he saw the temperature was under forty degrees.
He rushed back into his bedroom, snatching his phone from the bedside table before dialing the number for the superintendent.
“Hello?” he asked, voice obviously tired.
“Hey, it’s Keith and the heat-“
“Say no more,” he sighed, interrupting. “The heat’s out in the whole building. I’ve put in a call to have the maintenance crew come in and they’re going to get here as soon as they can. The snow’s pretty bad outside and they have to come across town so sorry to say that it might be a few hours.”
Keith blinked. “Oh,” he said. “Okay. Thanks.”
“Of course,” he said. “Is there anything else you need?”
“Nope, that’s it.”
“All right,” he said. “Call if you need anything else.”
“Sure,” Keith said, ending the call. “This is going to be fun,” he grumbled to his empty apartment and sighed. He could at least be grateful that he still had electricity.
He shuffled into the kitchen and started rummaging through the cabinets, searching for something to keep him warm. He found a can of instant hot chocolate mix and set a pot of water on the stove to boil. As he waited, he retrieved his computer and several blankets and set them up around the couch to have somewhere warm to retreat.
His phone buzzed as he was mixing the boiling water with the hot chocolate mix into a large mug. He absentmindedly stirred the mixture with a spoon, picking up his phone to find a message from Shiro waiting for him.
Shiro: Morning, babyyyyyy
Keith smiled and carried his phone and hot chocolate into the living room, getting comfortable among the blankets before he replied.
Keith: Cold morning
Shiro: Awww, need someone to come warm you up?
Keith: Yeah, actually. The heat’s out in my building
Shiro: Shit
Keith: Yeah, it’ll hopefully be fixed by the afternoon, but the snow we got was bad and I don’t even want to think about what the roads look like
Shiro: You got anything to keep you warm?
Keith: Lots of blankets and hot chocolate, but that’s about it. I’m kind of wishing I had a space heater, but I don’t even know where I could go buy one or if I’d even want to go outside when I don’t have to.
Shiro: Sorry
Keith shrugged even though Shiro couldn’t see him.
Keith: Can’t be helped. The best I can do is deal with it. I’ve got work later so that’ll give me somewhere warm to go if the heat’s not on soon.
Shiro: You at least ready to book your plane tickets?
Warmth bloomed in Keith’s stomach that had nothing to do with the hot chocolate he was drinking. He bit his lip, excitement spreading through him.
Keith: Definitely.
He reached for his computer and nestled it over his blanket covered legs, clutching the warm mug close to his chest. His phone started to ring, and he answered it quickly, cradling it between his shoulder and his ear as he typed in his password with one hand.
“Hey,” he said, keeping his attention on his computer that was booting up.
“Morning, babe,” Shiro said. “Have you looked at any prices yet?”
“Nope. I’m just getting my computer powered up now, so it could be a minute or two before I can get on the internet. The one good thing about this morning is that electric is still working. I really don’t know what’s up with the heat.”
Shiro hummed. “Yeah, that is kind of strange… Maybe there’s a short or a connection slipped.”
Keith sighed. “I guess we’ll find out,” he said, taking a sip of his drink. He opened his web browser. “Okay, what airport am I flying into?”
“Melbourne International Airport,” Shiro answered.
Keith hummed, typing in the airport and the flights there from Chicago. “These aren’t bad,” he said, scrolling down through the list of flights that was only a couple hundred bucks for round trip tickets.
“What time do you think you could get in?”
“Well, I can finish up my classes on Friday and pack that night and leave Saturday morning. I’d get there in the middle of the afternoon, but I could stay until the next Sunday if you’re okay with me staying a little over a week?”
Shiro chuckled. “Do you even have to ask?”
“I just want to make sure,” he grumbled.
“I’m perfectly fine with you staying that long. Hell, I’d welcome it. I’ve missed you so much that I want to spend as much time with you as I can.”
Keith bit his lip and felt his chest warm despite the cold that permeated everything around him. “I’d have to get a noon flight back,” he continued after Shiro’s words had hung in the air too long.
“That’s fine. I’m good to take you there and pick you up whenever you need it. My schedule’s a lot more flexible than yours was.”
Keith smiled. “Okay, give me one second. I need to grab my wallet so I can pay for these.”
Warm butterflies exploded in his stomach. He hadn’t even thought about it much before now that this was actually happening, but now there was no mistaking the face he was going to fly down to Florida to see his boyfriend. It was something he never would’ve expected to happen in his life.
“I’m going to put you on speaker, okay?” Keith asked.
“Sure.”
He hit the speaker button and set the phone to the side as he started booking the tickets. He typed in his personal information, grin getting wider as he reached the bottom of the page and put his payment information in.
“Okay,” he said softly before clicking the payment button. “It’s done,” he said when the confirmation flashed. “I’m officially coming to visit you over spring break.”
“Make sure to send your flight numbers and info to me,” Shiro said.
“Don’t worry,” Keith said, picking up his phone. He took it off speaker and leaned back against the cushions, eyes still locked on his computer. “I’ll get all of that to you later.”
“Hey, Keith?” Shiro asked.
“Yeah?”
“You’re coming to visit me.”
He breathed a laugh, chest ready to explode. “Yeah. Yeah, I am.”
If you enjoy my work, please reblog or consider buying me a ko-fi!

[ 365 Days of SasuHina || Day Two Hundred Thirty-Five: Too Much Water ] [ Uchiha Sasuke, Hyūga Hinata ] [ SasuHina ] [ Verse: Divine Light ] [ AO3 Link ]
At times, one’s student can be a bit too prodigious.
Teaching an overly-sheltered water mage about their crafts was never on Sasuke’s to-do list, but Fate had other ideas. In order to find his brother a healer, he had to strike a deal: take on one Hinata of the Hyūga as a pseudo-student, and Sasuke would be granted access to a rare mage of pure Luxerian blood.
Of course...that came with other conditions. In order to properly heal Itachi, she needs access to the knowledge long locked away by her ancestors after the coup that tore the Elemental Summit apart. That, in turn, means a several week journey to the long-abandoned Luxerian capital.
And on the way, Sasuke makes good on his part of their promise.
Hinata, sheltered by her father, knows...almost nothing of ven: the energy used by elves to bend their element to their will. Having lost her mother when very young to a raid, Hinata (and her sister) were strictly forbidden from using their powers as to avoid any further suspicion against them.
Sasuke, on the other hand, has never had to live without his element. Teaching someone from scratch - let alone one of the element opposite his own - isn’t something he’s ever had to do before.
“All right...are you ready?”
“I...I think so.”
Together, he and Hinata stand on the bank of a river not far from their group’s current camp. They’ve been on the road a little over a week, and this is Hinata’s first real lesson. In other words...one with actual application rather than theory. They’ve had many hours discussing the techniques and legends behind their powers, but only now has Hinata had any real chance to use her elemental energy.
“Now, remember what I taught you. You have to reach to the element with your energy. Speak to it. Convince it to follow your commands, and work with it.”
“How...how will I know if I’m doing it right?”
“You’ll just know. The water will obey you.” He gestures to the river. “I can’t tell you what it will feel like. My element is nothing like yours. Fire is...hungry. Unruly. As for water...I can only guess.” For an example, he summons fire to a palm, directing it to dance in certain patterns atop his palm.
Hinata watches, pale eyes wide and curious.
“As you interact with it, you’ll get a feel for it. Learn what it gives, and what it takes. It’s much like learning to work with any beast. You have to adapt to each other. Find what works.”
“...all right.” Taking a steadying breath, Hinata reaches out hands as best to visualize the movement of her ven. Doing her best to direct it into the flow of the river, she lets her eyes close, feeling rather than relying on her sight. It’s...something she can’t quite describe in words. “I...I think I feel it.”
“Good. Now try something simple, like...lifting some water from the riverbank. Not much - each action will take varying amounts of energy depending on how much you need to accomplish it. Start slow and small until you can gauge your limits.”
She gives a curt nod. Lifting her hands, she grits her jaw against the surprising strain as she attempts to do as suggested. It’s almost like it’s...too heavy! Or maybe it’s...fighting her.
Water flows freely...it can carve its own path, even through stone, if it works long enough. If I want to get it to follow me...I have to entice it. It has to want to flow with me…! Trying to bear that in mind, she realizes...she’s fighting the current, rather than working with it. Maybe…
Opening her eyes a hair, she moves her focus a bit more upriver, and then lets her energy flow with the current. Then, as it makes its way down, she lifts.
And from the surface comes a small, wobbling sphere of water.
Behind her, Sasuke’s brows lift in a hint of surprise. He...wasn’t expecting her to succeed so quickly.
Clearly just as taken aback, Hinata loses her concentration with a sound of shock, the hold dropped as the water flops back into the river.
“Did...did you see that?”
“I did,” he admits, arms still crossed. “That was impressive for your first try.”
“I...I think I understand it a bit better now. Let me try again!”
For nearly an hour, Hinata works on her control and precision, mimicking her first attempt. It’s not perfect, and there’s still much about the art altogether she doesn’t feel she understands, but...there’s the inkling. A beginning of knowledge to build from, like a foundation.
By the time she’s advised to stop, Sasuke gives her a small but genuine smile. “You did really well! Color me impressed.”
In spite of herself, Hinata goes a light shade of pink. “...well, thank you for all your help. I wouldn’t even know where to begin without your guidance.”
“I’m about as improper a teacher for a water mage as one can be, but...at least the very basics are shared across all the elements. I’ll just be unable to get into the finer details with you. Those...you’ll have to learn on your own.” There’s then a small jerk of his head. “Come on, let’s get back to camp. You’d best eat and get some rest after that. You’ll need to build up your endurance with it, just like using your body.”
The pair return to their party, Hinata indeed finding herself with a healthy appetite and not taking long to fall asleep later that evening. But they have places to be, and begin packing up camp once they all rise come morning.
Before they can take their leave, however, the distant sounds of trouble reach them.
Long ears flickering at the ruckus, Hinata then turns to look. “...did you guys hear that?”
“Aye,” Sasuke mutters. “Sounds like just the sort of thing we should keep our noses out of.”
“But what if someone’s hurt?”
“We can’t just intervene in every squabble we come across, Hinata. We’re not exactly built to be a party of real strength. I’m the only battle mage here: Itachi is ill, and you’re a novice. And the healer can only defend, not attack.”
“But -?”
“Leave it,” he advises, attaching his saddlebags to his mount.
Hinata, however...has little intention of listening. Already finished with her gear, she hops astride her horse and takes off back the way they came.
“Hey!” Gritting his teeth, Sasuke swears under his breath. “You two stay here, I’ll get her…!” Kicking his own steed into a sprint, he takes off after her.
A ways down the road, squabbling atop a bridge, a small party of raiders harass a traveling group. While it’s clear they’re attempting to fight back, it’s obviously not going well.
Expression set, Hinata calls, “You there! Run, get off the bridge!”
Everyone stills, and the civilians don’t need telling twice. Stumbling off, they head further down the road, leaving their packs where the raiders remain to loot the spoils.
Eyes almost seeming to glow, Hinata lifts her hands, letting her horse keep down the path at a run. Feeling the flow of the river, she bares her teeth in a snarl of determination and - with a roar - invites the water to follow her lead.
Like a tsunami, the current leaps up over the height of the bridge. Quailing beneath it, the brigands have no time to react before it washes them all over the other side and down into the rapids.
All at once, a great fatigue washes over Hinata, and she sags in her saddle. “Eugh…!” But just before she can fall, Sasuke catches up, snagging the reins and letting an arm steady around her shoulders.
“That,” he growls, “was too much water.”
Rather than retort, Hinata just goes slack.
Ignoring the bewildered travelers across the bridge, Sasuke takes the pair of them back to the camp. He then orders the other pair to follow, simply keeping pace at Hinata’s side to ensure she can rest in the saddle.
An hour later, she finally rouses. “...wh…?”
“That was a startlingly stupid thing to do,” he mutters. “You almost killed yourself.”
“...did they…?”
“Hm?”
“The people...did they get away?”
He watches her a moment. “...they did. Without their supplies, but...maybe they’ll manage. Better to be empty-handed than dead, I suppose.”
At that, Hinata just gives a small smile. “...good.”
“...don’t ever do that again.”
“I’ll...try not to.”
“Hn…”

More fantasy verse crossover! Not too much to say, honestly - I've still got my headache from my earlier piece, blegh Dx Almost didn't get this done, but I pushed through! Hopefully it's still enjoyable - and hopefully tomorrow I won't be so vexxed. Either way, though, thanks so much for reading!
