Something I haven’t seen a lot of people talking about in the Nope fandom is how every adult in the audience and on set leaves Jupe to die when the attack starts. This is the pinnacle of exploitation. When Gordy starts attacking everyone flees; nobody thinks about the innocent child trapped on the stage with him as he rampages. So many people made the decision to let this child (who has no idea what to do in this situation; hell most adults wouldn’t know what to do) stay on this set with a raging predator and protect themselves. I know it’s instinct to protect yourself to some degree, but this adds to the idea of spectle and exploiting people/animals for entertainment. Jupe was literally nothing more than an object for them to laugh at; the audience was using him for entertainment, the directors and producers were using him for money. Nobody expected him to come out of that room alive, and the saddest part is nobody cared. Children don’t have the capacity to evaluate the safety of the environment they’re around; they depend on adults to do that. All of those directors and producers and cameramen knew that Gordy could become dangerous someday, but Jupe trusted him implicitly, trusted them that he was safe.
In the end, Gordy reaches out to him. Part of the reason for this is probably because he didn’t make direct eye contact, but I think there’s something symbolic about it too. They were both put in danger on that set, they were both confused and scared and alone, and the people around them were only exploiting them with no care whatsoever for their safety or protection. It makes sense that Jupe would trust an animal more than a person - the people who were supposed to keep him safe failed him.
I feel like this also is super relevant to the way child actors are treated today. Jupe was put in an environment where he was actively exposed to a predator every single day. People put him in this position; he didn’t choose this. He didn’t know the dangers. He was exploited and he was hurt for it, left alone when the predator attacked. I feel like this correlates with all the children who are abused on movie and tv show sets who nobody stands up for when the predators come for them. People knew Gordy was a predator and they let him around Jupe anyway. People know that certain people in the industry are predators, and we let children around them anyway.
This movie gave me a lot of feelings. Feel free to let me know what you think!

I like that Jupe's idea of an alien is just the scariest thing he can think of, a chimpanzee.

Barely coherent Speculation about that alien in NOPE
Jupiter's Claim had much more people at it than the Haywood Ranch and so it was a much more attractive feeding ground. Both were located in an isolated region of burnt out chaparral with very little natural cover to the open sky. Perfect hunting grounds for a flying predatory megafauna.
Jean-Jacket shat all that blood and debris on top of the Haywood ranch home in order to warn it's own species that the prey within was too clever to be easily consumed.
J-J excreted coins, blood, keys, wheelchair, and a plaster statue of a horse. But it kept the bones and guts of its victims within itself. Which implies that J-J's species likes sodium and calcium but not iron or metallic alloys.
Jean-Jackets eating habits seem consistent with a newborn. It doesn't know what it can or cannot digest and will regurgitate that which it cannot.
So covering yourself in plate or chain metal armor won't save you from getting eaten. Jean-Jacket will just shit your armor out or drop you from lethal heights.
I've been imagining that J-J has magnetoplaque (or magnetocyte) organs similar to the electroplaques (also called electrocytes) in electric eels. Both electricity and magnetism can be used to detect things and to move things.
j-j uses it's magnetocyte to generate ionic propulsion for the same purpose an eagle uses it's muscles: to gain altitude before entering an aerodynamic glide. When J-J is hovering, the process ionizes moisture in the air which causes accumulation, forming a cloud around j-j.
Doctors use Magnetic Resonance Imaging (combination of magnetism and radiation) in order to get images of a patients internal organs. By showing test subjects images while their brains are in an MRI scanner, scientists have been able to locate the sections responsible for visual processing. There's this one study where pictures of the actress Jennifer Aniston were shown to test subjects and each persons brain lit up in the same spot. There's also plenty of medical cases where people with brain damage are unable to recognize objects by sight.
J-J possibly uses it's magnetocytes to scan for, and the brains of, prey. If j-j sees itself within the the brain of an organism, then j-j will start considering that organism a threat. After all, in order to fight an enemy, one has to know it is there. Meanwhile the best kind of prey is one that is completely unsuspecting.
Killing Jean-Jacket is hypothetically easy, all one needs is a crank-operated anti-air gun from the 1940's. Or a cannon which uses torsion, explosives, or compressed air to launch a projectile. Unfortunately for humanity, our weapons technology has become increasingly integrated with electronics.

Hi, love your analysis of Nope. Have you seen the Jupiter's claim website? It really is something else when you know the context behind everything(also it doesn't do cookies which is a big plus honestly)
I have checked out the Jupiter's Claim site! And maybe played the token game a few times. It's a fun little thing, and suitably Ominous+ when the change hits. It's a good tie-in to the movie, I think 🐎🛸

Thinking about some posts about Nope that I saw on here the other night, namely about Gordy and the digestion scene about halfway through.
Before going into the film, I knew all about the Gordy subplot (I got really freaked out by Us so wanted to make sure I’d go into this one knowing what was up ahead). I knew the film began with a scene from Gordy’s Home, post-chimp mauling. That said, I still braced myself for impact: some kind of jump scare. I remember sitting in the theater with my fingers in my ears because I startle easily and wanted to prepare myself. But none came. All Gordy did was stare right at us – creepy, but it could’ve been worse.
A jump scare would’ve been too easy. It would’ve been cheap. It also would have made Gordy into a monster as opposed to a frightened animal exploited on set. We don’t see Gordy attack anyone on-screen for the same reason. Preventing this kind of spectacle requires treating both Gordy and his victims with humanity.
I remember not wanting to look Gordy in the eye in theaters because the shot was so unsettling. I felt the same way about the scene where we see everyone at Jupiter’s Claim being consumed by Jean Jacket. It was the one scene I couldn’t bring myself to watch because it triggered my claustrophobia. I avoided that spectacle, too – maybe I’m too sensitive, but also, maybe I responded the way Jordan Peele hoped for. lol

One of my favorite things from Nope was that Jupe (while talking about the Gordy's Home incident) said "every time we would mention the jungle he would snap" because that wasn't true, meaning he doesn't even remember what happened in its entirety. It was so traumatic for him that he has gaps in his memory, and then here he is all this time later, talking about how great the SNL sketch is and how fascinating the event was.
Plus: he watched Mary Jo nearly die, and he was the one that ended up killing her.
