Castlevania: Nocturne

My favorite thing about every single Belmont in Netflix's Castlevania and Nocturne?
Every single initial appearance radiates sad, pathetic energy.
Trevor's bar fight scene was equal parts hilarious and disheartening. This is the Last Belmont? A legendary clan of Vampire Hunters, reduced to a drunken brawler who gets his nuts kicked in so many times?
Julia Belmont? Bodied by hot, gay Dragon Daddy Olrox while her son watches. He brings the direct Belmont line down to two, and traumatizes the kid so hard he has ED—Enchantment Dysfunction until he becomes an adult.
Richter? Yeah! Literally has to have his first true core memory be his mom be fucking owned by the sexiest god damn bloodsucker in history. Little bro's canon event was to watch his mama be crushed.
Juste? Sure his entrance is cool, but then we realize he's also suffering from ED, he sucks at this whole grandfather thing, his wife and bestie killed, and he could never even confront his own blood over the death of his fucking daughter.
I love the fact that every single Belmont makes the worst first impressions. Regardless of sex or gender or age. They just fucking suck when introduced.

Okay, finally making a post about Castlevania Nocturne 'cause holy hell, was that good.
The characters are so interesting and 3-dimensional. The good guys have their faults and the bad guys have lines they won't cross. Like, Richter being this badass fighter, but also getting scared shitless when he sees Olrox and runs away. And even Olrox himself, who killed Richter's mom, but also doesn't really want Erzebet in charge.
All of the characters are hot, I'm just saying. Literally. All of them.
This show definitely stepped up with the LGBT representation, good for them
Edouard was so interesting! I was kind of miffed when I thought they killed him off, but them to see him turn into a night creature and still remember who he was, and even using his singing to encourage the night creatures to remember who they were and rebel, that was so cool!
Fighting scenes were top notch, absolutely stellar. I loved seeing new uses of magic, like Maria summoning animals and Anette pretty much being an Earthbender.
When Richter gets his magic back and Bloodlines starts playing, holy hell, I screamed. That was so fucking good.
Also screamed when Alucard showed up. Was literally like "My baby!" Ah, I missed my boy.
Overall, I loved this first season. Maybe the original Castlevania show is a little bit better, but Nocturne still fucking rocks. So hyped for season 2.

As a LatinAmerican student let me tell you something about Olrox, I love him and everything he represents.
Did he killed Julia Belmont? Yes, and she had it coming , let me explain; You don’t go out on a literal civil war without context on what’s going —on and who’s attacking who and most importantly why— take the side that looks like you, just to essentially killed the last hope of protection the other side has —Let’s remember that Belmont knew about the tale of vampires that could be friendly or neutral at worst /aka Alucard/ she could have spoken to the natives or the slaves to know why this was happening, but she didn’t /I doubt she did at least/— then make unfair decisions about who is evil and deserves to die.
(She might have KNOWN what was going on, since –in my understanding– she was living there for A GOOD WHILE, so she either didn’t care or was oblivious enough to pass it out.)
Olrox is literally the best thing to ever happen to me in so long, the lore behind him and the profound sense of cultural connection I feel with him is something I haven’t felt in a long time, I can feel his rage and his intense feeling of disgust at the idea of colonialism.
As a kid most of us were always told that colonialism was good for us, that we were savages before and now “we’re better bc we have technology”, but guess what, we had our technology back then, we had a way of living and a good thing going on. Was it perfect? No. But it was way better that the hell that was forced into us, the sickness and the cultural hatred that influenced us into submitting our culture and beliefs, THAT WASN’T A GOOD THING.
Olrox has every right and reason to do what he does. Fight me in the comments about it.

"I hope I'm not too late."
"...I mean, an ancient war goddess has risen and one of our own has been turned into a vampire, another guy is now a night creature...yeah, you are a little late to the party, my dude."
But since I am also late to the party, here's a brief and incomplete list of things I enjoyed about Nocturne:
The animation slaps because of course it does.
The cold-hearted badassery of Annette (in general) just caging her former abuser and letting the sun do the rest.
This is by far the most gruesome way to kill a vampire. Approved.
Was initially a little confused and disappointed by this choice as I wasn't sure why it was necessary to change Olrox's monster form from the green, bipedal Gollum thing to this weird dragon thing...
....but then they said he was Aztec and I thought, "Oh, not a dragon! It's Quetzalcoatl! Now I'm onboard. Pardon me, I was looking at the one-year plan, not the four-year plan." Aztec mythology for the win!
Good lord if this flip wasn’t the most needlessly fabulous thing I’ve seen all year.
Nothing really to do with Nocturne, but after countless disappointing book to movie adaptations, I felt this line on a spiritual level.
Olrox was the best thing about Nocturne. Him and Mizrak both.

Neither the original Castlevania show, nor Castlevania Nocturne are in any way shape or form misogynistic. At the very least, they are light years above their source material.
Both shows however are extremely momphobic. If you are a mom that isn't a part of the main, ensemble cast, then you're dropping dead, sweetheart.
• Lisa Ţepeş (later revived).
• Lydie Belmont (Juste's deceased wife)
• Julia Belmont
• Esther (Annette's mother)
• Tera (Edit added: I should specify that Tera ain't dead. But she is a vampire now, so...)
Honorable Mentions go to:
Trevor's mom.
Hector's mom, whom he murdered.
Sypha's mom.
That one woman in Gresit from the first season who had to wake up to her baby's empty, bloody crib. (Not motherless, but close).
As someone with severe mommy issues, I don't actually know how to feel...
Thanks, Castlevania. I guess.
