I’ve watched “Starship”. I’m not even going to try how many Star Trek references and jokes are in here because I feel like it’s just one huge Star Trek joke, have you even seen their emblem? “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few”, - are you even serious? It’s like the sixth minute. I bet at the end somebody will say that sometimes the needs of the few outweigh the needs of the many. February, sweety, that’s not a tricorder, that’s a communicator how did even show you anything. Joe Walker looks unexpectedly good with a moustache, his look feels especially refreshing after the penis costume (yes, I still feel a little traumatized after it). I saw Joe Moses and spent some time with that odd itch in my brain trying to recognize who the hell is that, because without a black wig and twisted face expression he looks like a completely different person (I would never think that he’s actually pretty). Okay, some silly Terminator and Futurama jokes are here too. The “lap” scene (when commander Up asks one of his subordinates to sit on his lap, but then it turns out that it’s nothing sexual, he just wants her to sleep better) was at the same time weird and unsettling but very sweet. No, it’s sooooo sweet. Almost too sweet to handle. How they rub their noses! Okay, audio jokes were very good, especially the one when Mega-Girl makes a modem sound. I’m too lazy to retell the plot right now, but just believe me that it’s about acceptance and tolerance. And love. Of course. Seems like we’re getting back to the good stuff – with funny jokes, interesting plots and, what I forgot to mention – pleasant music! It’s not like “Twisted” yet, but it’s already pretty good. P.S. I lost the bet, nobody said that. Such a missed opportunity.

Okay, so in case anyone couldn't make it to the livestream (and just because I wanted to), I wrote down some notes while watching it, so if anyone wants to read them, they're below the cut. (Also sorry ANI fans, my dad came in to borrow a pencil while the ANI segment was happening, so I missed a lot of it)

. There was a 4 minute long intro voice over before AVPM

. James watched AVPM

. 600,000 and Lauren plays the green screen piano

. 700,000 and Lauren does an architectural digest on the green screen house

. Jon really loves Ready To Go

. Darren keeps letting Joey know he sounds like shit on old recordings

. Pinball Pete’s burnt down 🙏🙏

. MAMD was the first student produced album to make the charts

. A Very Potter Sequel’s name came before A Very Potter Musical

. They accidentally wrote Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

. James gave Julia Albain leg splints

. During Starship the entire cast was breathing fibreglass

. Starship was called “knowingly amateurish”

. Darren was supposed to write 15 songs for Starship, but he got cast on GLEE

. Darren flew in to join a rehearsal as a surprise, ran in singing Beauty and everyone was so pissed

. Everyone still loves Kick It Up A Notch

. Nick: “Which was Holy Musical B@man-

Lauren: “Fuck yeah”

. They made up Sweet Tooth, and then found out he was an actual Batman villain

. Matt came up with “Calendar Man, your days are numbered” in his dream, and it was so good it forced him awake to instantly call Nick

. Goin' Back To Hogwarts Reprise made everyone cry

. AVPSY was five hours long

. Curt saw AVPSY

. Darren arrived 2 hours before the show and didn't get a chance to read through a lot of the script

. Darren came up with “I hope you find that swimming pool”

. Joey ate one banana on the day of AVPSY and during Sidekick went “I'm losing my vision”

. They had to pay the hotel union $11,000 to use THEIR OWN microphones, and Darren's STILL BROKE

. Jeff accidentally washed out his Aladdin hair dye

. A.J. Holmes had the same agent as Jafar's original VA, and they got him to do the intro and say “pee” and “poop” in Jafar's voice

. ANI was, as we know, expected to be a hit, and, as we know, it was not

. TTO was, as we know, expected to fail, and, as we know, did not

. TTO had a batshit cast party

. Pierce used to ask Matt insanely complicated questions before bed, e.g, “How did WWII happen?”

. Firebringer was a really old concept

. Literally no one questioned why the “I don't really wanna do the work today” clip had loads of people dressed as cavewomen + cavemen

. Firebringer was the first show Jon saw live

. They made up all the Hatchetfield shows at the same time

. Nick kept making sure Paul was having fun

. The song from the Pirate Show, “Born To Be Wretched goes so fucking hard. Like if a sea shanty was a musical theatre song essentially

. Mariah: “Rich gays, please give”

. Lauren choreographed Show Stoppin' Number

. People actually gave Lauren their phones when she asked in Inevitable, and they would take them backstage and take selfies before giving them back. One time it was locked and she shouted “WHAT'S THE PASSCODE?!?!?”

. Joey: “I'm in the middle of Wiggle”

. Everyone was ill during Black Friday

. Bryce saw Black Friday

. BRYCE GOT THE APPLE

. Nick told her “Interesting things happen here” when showing her to the seat

. Ahhh when Jeff played Tom…

. Angela was in Jaime’s improv class

. Angela is no longer on vocal rest

. Angela had to kill Sherman with a finger gun one night

. Will was 100% ready for NPMD

. Will was at a party they went to during A Very Starkid Reunion

. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR STARKID

. Rip Kim

. The Docks of Troutspear is sung by Matt’s favourite character (it also slaps)

. The Pit Stop in Hatchetfield livestream is going to be a tag team deathmatch

Starship is unironically a wonderful musical, I think it's one of StarKid's best and it's definitely one of my favourites, all the actors are so amazing, like, Joey Richter makes Bug such a wonderful naive protagonist, Brant Cox is a perfect best friend sidekick in Roach, Dylan Saunders is wonderful as the villain, Pincer, and doubles up as the wonderful, simple farm boy Tootsie Noodles, not to mention the rest of the Starship Rangers are all wonderful, my favourite characters! Denise Donovan plays the charming and ditzy love interest as February really well, Lauren Lopez shines as Taz, the tough tomboy, Meredith Stepien is obviously amazing as Mega-Girl, Brian Holden is so hilarious as the pathetic yet super evil Junior, Joe Walker is WONDERFUL as Commander Up, the former tough guy turned insecure sweetheart GOD Joe Walker is on another level, and even though Joe Moses and Julia Albain play smaller roles as Krayonder and Specs, I still find their performances super fun, as well as Jim Povolo, Jaime Lyn Beatty and Nick Lang as wonderful supporting cast with great voices and great range, and the songs are wonderful, Kick It Up A Notch is a genuinely AMAZING villain song, The Way I Do is one of my favourite love songs, I Wanna Be is a perfect introductory and I want song, and Status Quo, Get Back Up, and Life are bangers, not to mention the other songs that are also good! I could talk about this musical all day, the way that there's motifs from other songs present, like how there's a part of Life in Kick It Up A Notch, sung by Pincer, echoing when Bug previously sung the lament, and how lyrics from I Wanna Be come in as well as Pincer offers Bug the chance to be everything he's wanted to be, and there's even other smaller times we notice the motifs, like how in the introductory video Bug watches from the crashed starship, the instrumental of Get Back Up is playing, and the instrumental of Life is playing when the bugs first see the starship... God I'm obsessed with this musical you do not understand

As a follow up to my last post

when I was counting all the puppets in starship, I noticed something weird about some of the backround puppets

so originally I was going to count 11 puppets for starship, but then I changed it to 9.

Look at these puppets we see at the start of scene 2

One primarily blue, puppeted by Nick Lang, with accents of green

And the other, mostly pinkish, puppeted by Julia Albain, with accents of red

In the Climax of the song, two more puppets enter

One primarily blue, puppeted by Nick Lang, with accents of red

Another, mostly pinkish, puppeted by Julia Albain, with accents of green

From the way the puppet itself is segmented, It looks like the head/back part can be removed. It seems that there is one base puppet and they've swapped.

Hence why I've only counted them as two!

Most notable Starkid cast members?

Starkid has had a lot of different cast members in their shows through the years and I started wondering who has been in the most shows and how many shows someone would have to be in for them to feel like a "proper" Starkid. I could have looked up to see if anyone has compiled this information but instead I decided to do it myself!

I went through the cast lists of all fourteen live stage shows they have uploaded to their channel (so including VHS Christmas Carol but not Nightmare Time or any other digital series) and here's what I found:

(behind a read more because this got looong and also so you have time to guess which actors have been in the most shows!)

Then there are a handful of people who have only appeared in one or two shows, most notably Bonnie Gruesen, who played Hermione in the first two Potter musicals, Will Brenner, who debuted in Nerdy Prudes Must Die, and Mariah Rose Faith, Angela Giarratana, Curt Mega, Kim Whalen, Kendall Nicole Yakshe and Bryce Charles, who have all appeared in two or more Hatchetfield projects.

A couple of observations:

Some of the actors listed have also been involved behind the scenes, with Nick Lang writing almost every show with his brother Matt Lang, and Jeff Blim and Clark Baxtresser writing the music for several shows.

I was shocked that Rachael Soglin has only been in three Starkid shows but I guess it goes to show that the size of the role also plays a part in how much of a "Starkid" every actor feels.

okay look. not to gatekeep but i think if you're a newer starkid and you can't tell me 1) who julia albain is 2) what little white lie is and 3) all the names in liam's got a phone call, i don't wanna hear your complaints about what starkid chooses to produce next

#what was denise donovan's first show? who originally did their music? who was in apocalyptour? QUICKLY #i wanna be clear i have no problem with new starkids who are respectful and excited about the company #my issue is the newer ones who hate on old shows/get upset about basically anything that isnt hatchetfield related/are weird to the crew #idk starkid isnt like a show fandom. its years of college friendship and a fandom built by fans. ive been here since i was 10 #ive seen quite a few newer fans get upset about cinderellas castle. one dummy on twt even argued with mariah about it #and idk it just comes off as very rude to hate on a company that GIVES US STUFF FOR FREE when you dont even know their history #newsflash!! adaptations and puppets are like. as starkid as it gets #starkid is not a product that we ask for. the gang thinks up something theyre passionate about and we enjoy #its fine to maybe not like a play concept or point out poor choices from 2009. but its NOT ok to attack the company and its crew as a whole #idk. its just very frustrating to me #just be respectful! please! the starkids r not big budget a list actors they are normal people who work for little pay for passion projects #i could probably articulate my thoughts better but whatever. just be respectful thats what this boils down to #starkid #me yapping
