What is fauvism
Fauvism, style of painting that flourished in France around the turn of the 20th century. Fauve artists used pure, brilliant colour aggressively applied straight from the paint tubes to create a sense of an explosion on the canvas.
What is fauvism
The Fauves painted directly from nature, as the Impressionists had before them, but Fauvist works were invested with a strong expressive reaction to the subjects portrayed. First formally exhibited in Paris in 1905, Fauvist paintings shocked visitors to the annual Salon d’Automne; one of these visitors was the critic Louis Vauxcelles, who, because of the violence of their works, dubbed the painters fauves (“wild beasts”).
The leader of the group was Henri Matisse, who had arrived at the Fauve style after experimenting with the various Post-Impressionist approaches of Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, and Georges Seurat. Matisse’s studies led him to reject traditional renderings of three-dimensional space and to seek instead a new picture space defined by movement of colour. He exhibited his famous Woman with the Hat (1905) at the 1905 exhibition. In this painting, brisk strokes of colour—blues, greens, and reds—form an energetic, expressive view of the woman. The crude paint application, which left areas of raw canvas exposed, was appalling to viewers at the time.
The other major Fauvists were André Derain, who had attended school with Matisse in 1898–99, and Maurice de Vlaminck, who was Derain’s friend. They shared Matisse’s interest in the expressive function of colour in painting, and they first exhibited together in 1905. Derain’s Fauvist paintings translate every tone of a landscape into pure colour, which he applied with short, forceful brushstrokes. The agitated swirls of intense colour in Vlaminck’s works are indebted to the expressive power of van Gogh.Three young painters from Le Havre, France, were also influenced by Matisse’s bold and vibrant work. Othon Friesz found the emotional connotations of the bright Fauve colours a relief from the mediocre Impressionism he had practiced; Raoul Dufy developed a carefree ornamental version of the bold style; and Georges Braque created a definite sense of rhythm and structure out of small spots of colour, foreshadowing his development of Cubism. Albert Marquet, Matisse’s fellow student at the École des Beaux-Arts in the 1890s, also participated in Fauvism, as did the Dutchman Kees van Dongen, who applied the style to depictions of fashionable Parisian society. Other painters associated with the Fauves were Georges Rouault, Henri Manguin, Charles Camoin, and Jean Puy.
For most of these artists, Fauvism was a transitional, learning stage. By 1908 a revived interest in Paul Cézanne’s vision of the order and structure of nature had led many of them to reject the turbulent emotionalism of Fauvism in favour of the logic of Cubism. Matisse alone pursued the course he had pioneered, achieving a sophisticated balance between his own emotions and the world he painted.

Salon d’Automne
The Salon d’Automne was established as an alternative to the conservative official Salon. It was also an alternative to the Salon des Indépendants, which was liberal but had a juryless policy that often led to mediocrity. The founders of the Salon d’Automne were a group of artists and poets that included Eugène Carrière, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Georges Rouault, Édouard Vuillard, Joris-Karl Huysmans, and Émile Verhaeren, under the leadership of the architect Frantz Jourdain. They decided to form their own organization with the aims of welcoming any artist who wished to join, selecting a jury for exhibitions by drawing straws from the new group’s membership, and giving the decorative arts the same respect accorded the fine arts.
The first Salon d’Automne was held on October 31, 1903, at the Petit-Palais. The organizers chose autumn as the time of year for their shows because most other exhibits in Paris took place in the spring and summer. The venue was a significant force in the development of modern art in Europe. Early salons included retrospective exhibits of Post-Impressionist painters Paul Gauguin (1903 and 1906) and Paul Cézanne (1907); these shows helped establish their respective reputations and also proved to be events that influenced the careers of many artists. The best-known exhibit was that of 1905, when the painter Henri Matisse and his colleagues were dubbed Fauves (“Wild Beasts”) because of their uninhibited use of pure, nonnaturalistic colours.

Jory Marquet for  A Year of Theme Posts
Jory Marquet from the Dollanganger Family series (1979-1986) by V.C. Andrews for August 19, 2017 August, 2017 Favorite Character Theme.
So the books that Jory was in have been adapted into television films, but I was unable to find a decent picture of him alone which is why there is no picture.
Jory makes his first appearance in the second book of the Dollanganger family Petals on the Wind (1980) where he is the first born son to Cathy and her recently deceased first husband Julian. He loves Cathy’s second husband Paul Sheffield as his Father since Jory never knew his birth Father and quickly becomes a big brother when Cathy becomes pregnant with a second son with the Father being her Mother’s second husband Bart Winslow.
In the third book If There Be Thornes (1981) Jory becomes a more prominent character and is seen by his younger brother Bart to be the perfect child. Jory has also followed in his Mother and Father’s footsteps in wanting to become a dancer which causes Bart to hate him more. Unlike Bart, Jory does not latch onto Corrine Foxworth who had recently moved in close to the family home and tells her to leave his brother alone when he becomes suspicious of her behavior.
In the fourth book Seeds of Yesterday (1984) Jory has grown up and married his childhood sweetheart Melody and has a successful dancing career with this wife as his partner. In preparation for Bart’s twenty fifth birthday party Jory and Melody go to visit him at the newly constructed Foxworth Hall (the original burned down years before) where Bart tells him that he wants his older brother to perform a dance at his wedding.  This dance would prove to be almost fatal for Jory who is severally injured when a prop falls on him breaking his back and leaving him incapable of standing let alone dancing. Following Jory’s accident Melody begins an affair with Bart and after giving birth to Jory’s twin children leaves Foxworth Hall and does not return.
While trying to raise his children without Melody’s help Jory’s relationship with Bart continues to strain, but never completely breaks. Eventually Jory finds help to raise his children and gains a new love interest in the process when Cathy hires a woman named Toni to help take care of him and eventually Jory and Toni marry after Toni finds out that she pregnant with his child.
In the Lifetime film of If There Be Thrones (2015), Jory was portrayed by Jedidiah Goodacre and in the Lifetime film of Seeds of Yesterday (2015) an older Jory was portrayed by Anthony Konechny.

Colton stood beside his father, and little sister waiting for a seat to open up to the diner. Their other dad was running late, at dance practice, so the wait was probably a good thing. Colton tugged on the shirt tail of the person waiting in front of them. The person turned around stunned only for their face to relax as they looked down at the beautiful boy with dark blonde hair. “You know my daddy is the most beautiful dancer in the world. He’s famous, he can dance to anything,” Colton tells the man beaming. His eyes glance up at Dalton for a moment as if trying to decipher if he knows him.
Tumblr media
“Not him,” Julia interjects, “our other daddy. He’s a great dancer, I’m going to be one just like him,” Julia says to the man. “His name is Jory Marquet, our grandma and grandpa were dancers too. They’re all famous. One day I’ll be famous too,” Julia beams. “Oooo...there’s daddy,” she shouts her attention turning to Jory whose striding towards them quickly.
Tumblr media
“Sorry I’m late, practice ran long,” Jory says picking up both children in his arms and kissing their cheeks much to their delight. “How’s my little prince and princess?” He asks them before they answer back that they’re good. He goes to set them down but they refuse to let go so he continues to hold them. He smiles at Dalton gently and leans in kissing Dalton’s cheek sweetly, “Hey babe,” he whispers gently nuzzling into Dalton’s cheek before the guy ahead of them clear his throat and thrusts and pen and napkin towards Jory for an autograph. Jory chuckles and goes to say he’s off duty and with his family, before his daughter pipes up at him to sign it. He gives a bashful sort of smile before signing the napkin and handing it back.

Cathy Dollenganger for A Year of Theme Posts
Tumblr media
Cathy Dollenganger from Flowers in the Attic (1979), Petals on the Wind (1980), If There Be Thorns (1981) and Seeds of Yesterday (1984) by V.C. Andrews for May 4, 2017 May, 2017 Heroine Theme.
First appearing in the Flowers in the Attic, Cathy Dollenganger is the first daughter and second oldest child in her family and is helping her Mother and siblings prepare for her Father’s birthday party who was killed in a car accident before he could return home. Desperate for money and help Cathy goes with her Mother Corrine, older brother Christopher, and younger twin siblings Cory and Carrie to their Grandmother’s home Foxworth Hall.
Shortly after arriving at Foxworth Hall Cathy, Chris, Cory, and Carrie are locked in the attic where they will stay for three years. The longer she stays in the attic the more Cathy wonders if her Mother is being truthful for her reason of locking her children in the attic and starts to join Chris on expeditions outside the attic. This is how they discover that there is a new man in Corrine’s life and she plans to marry him.
When they are in the attic though Cathy starts to replace Corrine as Cory and Carrie’s Mother and starts to fall in love with her brother Chris and eventually she and Chris have sex. This is something that Chris regrets and apologizes to Cathy for since he believes that he raped her. Cathy is unable to save her younger brother Cory from dying and strengthens her resolve to save herself as well as Chris and Carrie. Shortly after their Mother’s second marriage Cathy discovers that they have been fed poisoned doughnuts and that the powdered sugar on the doughnuts has been laced with arsenic. The three surviving Dollanganger children escape a short time after this.
In Petals on the Wind Cathy, Chris, and Carrie are adopted by a doctor named Paul Sheffield who Cathy begins to develop feelings for. Paul puts all three children in school and it’s at her ballet classes that Cathy meets Julian Marquet who she eventually becomes dancing partners with and later marries and has his son shortly after he is killed in a car accident which eerily similar to how her Father died. Carrie also becomes engaged to Alex Rockingham a minister in training, but she commits suicide by putting arsenic on powdered doughnuts after being unable to tell him that she was molested by Julian.
Following the death of her husband Cathy begins again to plot revenge against her Mother by seducing her second husband Bart Winslow and announcing her pregnancy at the annual Christmas Party at Foxworth Hall shortly before the house is burned down which kills Bart and the Grandmother in the process.
If There Be Thorns and Seeds of Yesterday focus more on Cathy’s sons Jory (Julian’s son) and Bart (Bart Winslow’s son) after she has married her older brother Chris who took Paul Sheffield’s name before the doctor’s death. Cathy is no longer able to dance after a knee injury, but teaches classes instead. She is also reunited with her Mother Corrine for a short time before her death in a fire started by John Amos who had continued on as a Foxworth butler.
Cathy eventually returns a newly rebuilt Foxworth Hall that was constructed by her younger son Bart and only plans to stay until his twenty-fifth birthday where he will gain his inheritance. Instead she ends up staying until Jory heals from an injury sustained at Bart’s birthday party, then until the birth of Jory’s twin children, then until a subtitle care giver for the children can be found after Jory’s wife deserts him, and only leaves after Chris is killed in a car accident after looking for a new house for him and Cathy to live in with Jory and the children. And she doesn’t walk out the front door, but instead goes up to the attic and dies of a broken heart so she can finally be reunited with Cory, Carrie, and Chris.
