Do you have any Joe/Nicky fic recs?
Do I ever, bestie.
Here are my bookmarks on ao3, which functions as a rec list really
Specific shout outs include:
He, Dreamless by @guarncre, which I read with a breathless hysteria I've never experienced in myself before
say the word (& I'll be your renaissance man) by @bewires. Everything by Lia, actually, but this happens to be my particular favourite that wasn't written as a gift for me.
If Never Again, If Every Day by @gallifreyburning & @takiki16. A true and proper gamechanger of a fic. Sets the standard we should all aspire to.
Leave the Window Open by superblackmarket, who has never missed even once in their life, their every fic is a joy
Continuity of Memory by AirgiodSLV, which I absolutely adore
i want to wear your sweater (i want to wear your ring) by @knoepfchen which is just flawlessly fuckin hilarious and wonderful. Once again, please read all of Laurel's fics.
some cupids kill with arrows (some with traps) by @nicolos surely everyone has to know by this point that soulmates of any fashion are my kryptonite
honey i’m lovedrunk (it’s what you do to me) by @maddielle, which was the first fic of Maddie's I read and I hadn't even finished it before I subscribed to her.
Exposure by @chinchillinator and its sequel of course, this whole series is such a balm to my soul in the face of the terrible fuckin gender politics I've seen in omegaverse fics. Legs never misses.
wherever you are and wherever you go by @werebearbearbar I can't read just one of melly's fics, I have to read them all like I'm eating my way through a family bag of crisps in one sitting, but this one literally changed the chemistry of my brain
this song is new to me by @captainshakespear entirely flawless ace!Joe fic. I think about it every single day.
Roll Initiative by @nanashi-07 never fails to have me in absolute bits, it's wonderful
the dark matter of you by @polarcell I still think Nicky should get to murder him a little. As a treat. For me. The emotions this fic inspires in me, good lord
Lionheart by @non-un-topo absolutely no one does a mystery like siggy, holy fuck. I was going to link Perferō but I think you should start at the start of the series and work your way through
whatever here that's left of me by asifnotbound. peach can absolutely do no wrong in my eyes and this fic showcases her fantastic range and emotional depth.
Old Olives by aeli_kindara I love this fic so fucking much
Ten Ounces by @the73rdpostscript do I think of this fic every goddamn day? Yes. Yes I do. Read postie's fics I swear to fuck.
nothing here that is not sacred by @sixth-light. No one does it like sixth-light. No one. This just happens to have demi!Joe and I'm so outrageously here for that, but please just consider this the jumping off point for reading everything she's ever written.
Recover what was lost by @pinkninjapj, a stunning change of pace for me here, I know. Anyone who's ever talked to me for more than ten minutes knows my heart beats Retrograde, but I need to show love to Recover as well, which I have read easily a dozen times.
Shattered Pieces by AraSigyrn. I think of this fic every goddamn day.
with every inch of my heart by @smilebackwards what if Nicky had a Michelangelo and I cried about it many times????
walk inland by ScribeofArda fucking hell this fic does me in each time and I ADORE it
Departures by spqr I can't even BEGIN to tell you how much I love this fic. It makes me see shrimp colours.
In Pursuit of the Best Taste by PastyPirate they're rival bakers!!! It makes me so happy!!!!
This list is definitely not exhaustive, we'd be here forever if I listed every fic in this fandom I love. I've absolutely forgotten top tier fics and writers, but they're in my bookmarks for sure. Please go through all the authors' back catalogues too, because there is so much wonderful work in this fandom.

Gay wrongs tournament, round one of the major bracket
Propaganda:
For the Doctor and the Master:
Immortal genderfluid war criminals <333
So we all know the Master has killed plenty of people, but, despite their reputation, the Doctor has killed a more than average number too. Sure they undid the whole destroying their own planet thing, but that's still something the Doctor did. Also there's apparently a novelization out there where, when they were children, the Doctor killed one of their childhood bullies but then made a deal with Death so that the Master had the memory of it and became Death's champion, which is pretty messed up and murder husbandish. There are plenty more war crimes on the Doctor's hands, and the Master has killed countless people in a variety of creative ways. Also, I'm having trouble finding the quote, but I swear the Master once said something to the lines of "trying to kill the Doctor is just my flirting" or something similar. But I do know Missy (also the Master but female at the time) described their relationship as "older than your civilization and infinitely more complex". They love each other, they're constantly trying to destroy each other, they are the only friends they each have who can even begin to understand everything they've been through; they've known each other since childhood and they've watched (and helped) civilizations rise and fall together. They may not be who you first think of for murder spouses but they really are a beautiful example.
For Joe and Nicky:
Immortal mercenaries they first met when fighting on opposite sides of the crusades. They killed eachother many times but came to understand eachother as the years passed. Eventually they fell in love and have been inseparable since. They live, love, fight and die together and have done so for hundreds and hundreds of years.
That is your pfp, dear pollrunner, and yet they don't have an automatic submission??? For shame! :D :D :D (Mod note: Honestly they should have :D They're no longer the pfp, though)
They definitely commit crimes, including murder. Their goodness or badness "depends on the century." There is an exchange in the comics about what crime they'll commit that night (they end up dancing gayly in a place where that's illegal but that wasn't the crime they originally planned on)

Rules: Pick any 10 of your fics, scroll somewhere to the midpoint, pick a line (or a few), and share it! Then tag 10 people.
tagged by @oneawkwardcookie - thank you !
1. love finds a way
He feels a soft touch against his hand then, and he blinks, turning to find Eddie smiling at him. His hand is on his hand, and Buck gulps, before he’s moving his hand under, and he watches as Eddie’s eyes flicker for a moment, unsure.
Until he realizes that Buck’s not pulling away, but opening his palm up, intertwining their fingers together. Eddie’s breath hitches then, and he smiles.
2. to watch someone you love (come home)
“Yeah? Well, it was your girlfriend that didn’t want to eat my food,” Eddie returns with a shit-eating grin, putting the food on the coffee table, as Buck lays his head back with a sigh.
“Ex-girlfriend,” he mutters uselessly and Eddie snorts, sitting beside him finally, his thigh pressed against his.
“Thank God for small blessings.”
3. what we deserve
“You okay for us to stay here? I gotta work on the deck, while these two have fun without us,” he says, side-eying Chris then, and making him giggle. His dad blinks only once, before nodding.
“Of course,” he says, and there’s a smile on his face that Eddie is still not used to seeing. At least, not directed at him in his adult life. He can’t help but wonder if they’ll continue to be good the way they are when they’re alone. What if it’s just the momentum of seeing each other for the first time since El Paso? What if it’s just this first day and then it’s back to how it was before? Did his dad mean any of it so far, or is he just placating Eddie? But before he can get too deep into it, he feels a nudge on his knee and comes back to Chris is calling his name.
4. this heart of mine
Joe knows he’ll be stuck on that for a while, so fundamentally entrenched in the pain the betrayal caused. Because there is always a choice. There is always a choice for people, to do good. To do the right thing. To do what is kind, and generous. If he digs into his very own memories as a child, he can feel the teachings of his mother and father: that in our hearts light and kindness we can give to the world, it is up to us how we choose to share it.
5. to forget is to remember, to cherish
Andy takes him by the arm then, and with promises to be back within a month’s time, they go away together, and Joe lets himself be swept away in his sister’s presence. Let’s himself drown in it, because he knows one day, she’ll be a memory. And if their life were to continue beyond more than what they have already been blessed with, then one day, he’ll forget her face, her laughter, her joy.
6. let’s right, these wrongs, together
“You made me believe you were gone. My whole family. Our friends. They all—Fuck, Nicolo, how could you?” he whimpers, and Nicky deserves it. He deserves it all.
7. in parts, i fall, in love
“Here, let me hold that for you.”
Joe hands over his glasses with his only free hand, the other clutching the ever-melting ice bag over his face as he walks.
“’Dank you.” Great, now he sounds like Kermit the frog. He glances at Nicolo who gives him a weak smile, walking beside him, one hand on Joe’s elbow, the other holding the rest of their things.
8. hand-shaped bruise
They are afraid of anything they cannot understand, even if benefits them. So they stay away and leave the Prince alone in his castle.
9. beautiful, i see you
“I’d be staring at myself too if I had your face,” he says, smoothly, and Joe’s mouth drops open and he swears his face is going to fall off it feels so warm. Then the man’s own face flushes red then, but instead of being frozen like him, he steps forward and tilts his head at him.
10. baby immortal research
"I could survive this drop."

Some Religious Facts and Terminology
1) To start—Allah is the same entity as God. It’s just the Arabic word for God. Literally, to break it down its the words al-ilah—The God. The term predates Islam.
Christians in the Middle East (and Mizrahi Jews) also say Allah. The terms God the Father/God the Son translate to Allah al-Ab/Allah al-Ibn. Both religions also use the shared term Rabina—‘Our God’. If your characters are speaking the same language just use ‘God’.
A Muslim wouldn’t say the phrase ‘Your God’ to a Christian unless they’re mocking them for worshiping Jesus as God himself, or believing in the concept of the Trinity. This is asshole behavior. It would not be used in conversation between friends.
Shared phrases include:
God Be With You (Rabina ma’ak) / God Be With Us (Rabina ma’ana), O God (Ya Rab!) and God Willing (Inshallah) denote hope or assurance. Sometimes can be said in mild sarcasm or disbelief like “Sure it will,” or “We’ll see,”.
If someone sneezes you say May God Protect You (Yarhamukallah) i.e. Bless You. May God Save/Preserve You (Rabina Yekhaleik/Yehfezak) is a step above ‘Thank you’ or ‘Be Safe’.
On God’s Life (Wehyat Rabina) and I swear to God (Wallahi) are when you yourself swear or you ask someone to swear on / ensure something. They’re sometimes said with a heavy dose of sarcasm, like if someone tells you the Earth is flat and you’re like ‘Swear to God?’
Praise God (Alhamdulillah/Ahmedak Ya Rab) are expressions of relief, like ‘Thank God!’. God Wills It (Mashallah) is also used for relief, and in response to both good and baffling news (with sarcasm), and to ward off the Evil Eye/envy/jinn from ruining said-good news.
Ask God’s Forgiveness (Estaghfarallah) is an expression of exasperation/disbelief (like if someone keeps arguing the Earth is flat), tends to be accompanied by an eye-roll. It’s like ‘For the Love of God!’
Saying ‘Allah!’ as a positive interjection, like when something good happens or when you see something wondrous or beautiful, is also common. It’s where the Spanish word Olé! comes from.
Something specifically Muslim would be like using Weh Nabi (For the Prophet’s sake) when asking for something, which is impolite to say to a Christian since it holds no significance for them.
2) People seem to be under the impression that the faiths are inherently segregated or disconnected. All three People of the Book (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) share a lot more than you’d think, namely most stories and figures from the Torah/Old Testament. One of the biggest Islamic holidays, the Feast of Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha) - also known as the Big Feast (Eid al-Kabir) is based on the story of the Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice is his son, then being told by God that he can now substitute a sheep for him. Sheep-meat dishes galore.
Other figures like Adam, Abraham (Ibrahim), Solomon (Suleiman), Joseph (Youssef), Noah (Nūh) and David (Dawoud) are important to all three, some more than others and other figures take a higher priority, like Ismael over Isaac. They factor into things like Muslims naming their daughters Sarah and Hagar, but not Rachel and Rebecca.
Look, it’s the same difference as Jews and Christians having the same god with the central difference being Jews not viewing Jesus as the Messiah. Muslims agree Jesus is the Messiah born of a virgin, just not the Son of God/God, or that he died on a cross. They even agree he’ll be back on Judgment Day to fight the Antichrist.
3) While we’re at it, Muslims revere Jesus and Mary, they literally refer to them as Our Master Jesus (Sayedna Issa) / the Messiah and The Lady Mary (A-Sayeda Mariam) -- in the Quran, Mary has her own chapter and Jesus’ name shows up a lot. They revere them, and to a lesser extent, John the Baptist, and even John’s father Zachariah, as prophets of God. They name their children Issa, Mariam, Yahya and Zakaria for them.
4) In more secular countries with a Christian population, like in Egypt and the Levant, there are Muslims who join in celebrations of Christmas and Easter. They don’t do it in the religious sense as you would in a church, and it’s not a priority of theirs, but it’s in a general cultural ‘woo-hoo holiday!’ way. Plenty do, in fact, get trees, hang wreaths, lights, and images of Santa Claus/Papa Noël, in December.
In April, people will buy brioches and dye eggs for Easter, not because they believe Jesus died and was resurrected, but because it’s fun. They’ll even send their kids to schools run by nuns called Sacré-Cœur (Sacred Heart) and Mére de Dieu (Mother of God)! My great-grandma was in a nursing home run by nuns.
On the other side, nothing stops Christians from joining in the spirit for celebrations either of the Feasts, and them not fasting during Ramadan does not stop them from coming over to break fast with Muslim friends. They will wish each other Merry Christmas (Eid Milad Saïd) and Happy Feast (Eid Saïd), they'll even get each other gifts.
Not practicing doesn’t stop you from partaking, just like how many irreligious people celebrate the secular Santa-based Christmas. There is a lot of general overlap. I literally went to a concert in my country last winter where many in an interfaith crowd came to watch a choir sing Christmas songs. Hell, my grandma read an Arabic translation of The Divine Comedy when she was in university.
Stuff like this is not uncommon unless you’re in a country with almost no minority faiths, or are under strict religious laws.
If anything, there have been pushes to join in interfaith celebrations and depicting characters on TV doing so to show unity and fight the rise in religious fanaticism and evangelical Islam that’s been happening the past couple of decades, which has raised the discrimination against and persecution of Christians and minority sects.
5) People who are against stuff like this, or get real defensive or offensive when offered or invited, who call for segregation of faiths, or who avoid interacting with Christians or anything they do, are fundamentalists/evangelicals/extremists. Just like you would with your own fundies, do not validate their behavior by displaying it on sympathetic characters, these are people who even other (moderate) Muslims would avoid. Fundie views are lethal, it encourages people to shoot up and bomb churches.
Religion is never an excuse to be an asshole. There’s a big difference between not wanting to eat a pork-based dish to keep halal, and refusing to shake hands with a woman/a Christian.
So, in any depiction of Joe, practicing, agnostic, somewhere-in-the-middle, just cultural rather than religious, etc. I beg of you don’t have him making fundie dick-moves like saying ‘Your God’ or rude things about Jesus, or refusing to help decorate a Christmas tree or wear a Santa hat. Canon!Joe was a Fatimid, they were known for being accepting/tolerant of minorities under their reign, he would not behave this way.

Biggest pet peeve in the tog fandom is people associating Booker with Paris. He's from Marseille guys, he only went to the capital at the end of the movie to be as miserable as possible and feel sorry for himself and what is better for that than a city full of self-righteous assholes that smells like death? He's from the south, trust me on this Paris is his number 1 enemy, he went there not because it's a home for him or a good place he just wants to get drunk and think about how sad his life is. Once he decides to get better he'll go drink pastis in the docks with the old fishermen and shopowners and get back into forging permits at the port. Stop putting the eiffel tower in your mood boards and edits and start adding le vieux port, the cathedral, lavender fields or even the coastlines, there are some pretty shores near Marseille. And if you want to go full aesthetic you have la Corniche and its war memorial that looks dope too.
He’s as much Mediterranean as Joe and Nicky are, they understand each other and their weird quirks better than Andy the Scythian will, or even Nile from Chicago. That's why Booker has that gesture when he watches the game with Joe, it's not that he spent too much time with Italian Nicky (I know he's older than Italy, dw) it's just the sea influences on the three of them.

"Yusuf is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, the most glorious person I've ever- how dare you, Nile? How dare you speak of him like that!?"
'Yusuf is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, the most glorious person I've ever- how dare you, Nile? How dare you speak of him like that!?'
'Nicky, I swear to god--'
Andy leaned over the side of the bed to glare down at them where they were hissing at each other like children. For a beat, no one spoke.
'Well?' asked Andy, one eyebrow raised.
'Androma--' Nicky stared, all affronted dignity, before Nile broke in.
'All I said,' she started, much louder than she had been speaking before now that she knew she couldn't wake Andy. 'Was that Joe-' and here she reached over to shove at the limpet attached to Nicky's back. He snorted, and carried on snoring without further interruption, 'is an ugly sleeper. And I stand by it.'
'You see!' Nicky hissed, patting at Joe's hand where it lay limp across his chest. 'You hear these falsehoods, Andromache? From my own sister in arms?'
Andy looked at them both with not a little disgust.
'Joe sleeps like someone knocked him out with the ugly stick and you know it, Nicolo.'
Nicky's answering gasp was so loud Joe woke up briefly against his back, blinking at them all like a startled fawn before a not-entirely gentle pat from Nicky put him back to sleep again.'

Joe is not an Arab
Joe is not a Seljuk Turk
Joe is not Black
Joe is not Syrian
Joe is Egyptian in the comics and Tunisian in the movies, either way he is a North African.
If you can make the distinction between Nicky being Italian and Booker being French you can remember that Joe is North African.

My dad was the first one to watch The Old Guard
And because of this, he right away recommend it to me. It was like:
"Go fucking watch The Old Guard."
"The what?"
"The Old Guard. Seriously, it's good."
"Okay... Yeah, seems nice. Maybe I will watch it."
Then he had to try harder, you know? Why he should give up? He loves the movie. He had to make me see the goddamn movie. So, he gets a better argument, as they say.
"Charlize Theron is in it."
Then, of course my fucking pansexual ass had to watch it. But, dumb as fuck as I am, I delayed for like three days? Yeah, so yesterday I watched it.
I will never doubt my dear dad again
