Where can I read "Kusuriya no Hitorigoto" Light Novel?
Since a lot of you have been asking this question lately, here is everything you need to know in brief...
What is a Web Novel (WN) and Light Novel (LN)?
Tumblr media
A WN is basically weekly chapters released by the main author on a weekly basis. You can find it on a lot of Japanese sites. Some amazing people also translate them on a regular basis and post those chapters. LN is a compilation of WN chapters. A number of Chapters from the WN are taken, translated, properly rewritten and edited to publish a final LN. It has a few illustrations as well like the one you can see below...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Manga, Light Novel and Anime
Tumblr media
Basically, the LN is taken and illustrated by an artist and we call it a manga. And when the manga has reached a certain number of Chapters, and gained a lot of popularity, it is converted into an anime. So that's the flow of things. We have
WN -> LN -> Manga -> Anime
I think that clears up a lot of misunderstandings. Firstly, the WN is published on a weekly basis, some chapters from WN are taken and translated properly to make a LN. The LN is illustrated by an artist to make the manga and the manga is generally adapted to make the anime.
Tumblr media
In case of 'Kusuriya no Hitorigoto' or 'The Apothecary Diaries', the anime is doing a great job of adapting the overall story because not only are they properly animating every scene from the manga but also adding their own scenes from the LN.
Tumblr media
Where can I read WN, LN and Manga?
WNs are the hardest to find, since they are released on a weekly basis by the Japanese author. They are written in Japanese and a few fans translate them for everyone. You can find it here...
(They have translated chapters of vol 10, 11 and 12)
The LN has reached until vol 9 and vol 10 is scheduled to release in Jan 2024. Currently, there is no source where you can find it for free (not that I know of, because even I have purchased the e book from Amazon) though the first few pages are available to read for free! So you can check them out!
Where did the Anime, Manga left off?
Tumblr media
The Manga has reached ch 68. If you want to start reading the light novel from where the manga left off, you can start reading from vol 4, chapter 4.
The Anime has released ep 12 and it has covered manga material till ch 20, if you want to read manga after finishing the anime.
If you have any other questions regarding the LN, WN, Anime or Manga, feel free to ask!

Mao Mao's real super skill is completly rewriting history
Jinmao is a pairing that makes me go feral because it somehow exists in the text and the subtext at the same time. my girl lives for the plausible deniability. You see she doesn't have any feelings except an interest in medicine - there is nothing else there. NOTHING don't you dare look further. And if she happens to have had a feeling at some point she well rewrite history that it never happened. Let me give you an example. Spoilers for the end of season 1/ the beginning of season 2 under the cut
So Mao Mao has left the Rear Palace and is working as courtesan. She isn't happy about it. Jinshi is super depressed about it. They meet. Mao Mao says: maybe i will take personal customers (i.e. customers she will have sex with). Jinshi answers:
Tumblr media
Mao Mao starts with: don't joke and than stops herself:
Tumblr media
(SN: Look at his precious, precious face. Oh my poor boy it won't be that easy) and she continues:
Tumblr media
(SN: the disappointment!!!! this makes me so happy) Anyway what's important about this exchange is that Jinshi is half joking. He's not being serious and expects a no. It's Mao Mao who says Yes. Jinshi wouldn't have bought Mao Mao if she hadn't told him to do it. Let's see how Mao Mao will describe the incident from now on:
Tumblr media
Suddenly. out of the blue Jinshi appears and makes a real good offer Mao Mao can't refuse. From now on we won't mention the conversation that preceded that offer. It didn't happen. It's even more explicit in the Anime where Mao Mao claims at one point that Jinshi tempted her with his strange medicinal herbs... Girl you were down to go with him, with or without medicinal herbs. Stop lying. And this his how it always happens: something romantic or nearly romantic will happen and after that Mao Mao will deny, deny and deny.
It makes me go crazy

Maomao's Dislike of Jinshi
So I've been watching Apothecary Diaries and I think people are missing out on the root cause of why Maomao doesn't like Jinshi's interactions with her. It's not because he's too pretty, of high standing, or because she thinks he's annoying/etc., as they're just parts that make up the actual root cause. It's because she knows he's being fake.
Jinshi, because of who he is, where he lives, and how he was raised, covers up his true intentions almost constantly. That was how he trapped Maomao and singled her out as the one who warned Concubine Gyokuyou, after all. The premise to get all the servants in the room, the note telling her to stay put, and making her come with him without telling her where they were going? He let her worry that she was in trouble, so to keep her off-balance when he introduced her to Gyokuyou and also had kept her note to keep her pinned in a corner so she would have to comply with what he and Gyokuyou wanted.
Maomao prefers working with honest people. It's why she never wanted to ascend into the ranks where court politics were a constant presence, because in court politics, you have to assume most people are lying to you on some level. That's why she likes Gyokuyou; Gyokuyou has a similar mentality about the importance of honesty in the people around her and she reciprocates that honesty with the select people she lets her walls down around. When Jinshi is flirting or being super sweet to someone, Maomao knows he's often not being sincere, so when he flirts or acts all sweet with her, she's not going to believe in the sincerity of it because it's dangerous for her if he's not being sincere.
In Maomao's world, a man who makes false promises will not have severe consequences for his actions, unlike the women who fall for them. Growing up where she did and doing the work she did, Maomao knows exactly what kind of damage someone else's lies can bring to someone else who got caught in them. Maomao is not blind to the ugly truths of the world around her, unlike many her age, so interacting with Jinshi, someone who is usually some level of false in almost every encounter with her, is frustrating to her and he won't leave her alone. Lies are a form of poison themselves as they deteriorate a person's life and relationships and if not caught, can lead someone to their death or a fate akin to death, but unlike physical toxins, Maomao can't fix any damage from that kind of societal poison. As someone who wants a lowkey and unremarkable life because it's more peaceful, Jinshi could damage her goals with his falsehoods if she falls for any of them.
And we see that when Jinshi is actually honest about himself and his feelings with her, she treats him better. When he gives her his hairpin, when he's hugging her and crying because of what happened with Ah-Duo, and when he's at the Verdigris House, drowning his sorrows over letting Maomao go from the Rear Palace, Maomao is kinder to him and doesn't look at him with the immediate disdain and suspicion she often throws his way. Maomao even states she prefers the Jinshi, who is more childlike and bratty, which is something we see Gaoshun constantly discourage when Jinshi has those moments where his mask breaks. But in those moments, he's being honest.
For the position of Maomao's love interest, Jinshi's already got one foot ahead of any other guy around Maomao, as he is willing to let Maomao have more freedom in her special interests and gives her things and access to areas that play into her interests, like her dad does, which is more than most men in her society would ever allow. The only reason he actively goes against her toying with poison is he knows exactly what she's going to do with the poisons. But his main hinderance to getting Maomao to like him back is the training of being two-faced that's been ingrained into him for his survival in court. If he was more honest with her, rather than hiding himself under the veneer of a pretty man who is sweet, gets along with everyone, and keeps his knowledge close to the chest, he'd do so much better in earning Maomao's respect and affection.

What MaoMao feels for Jinshi...
Tumblr media
(Vol 5 epilogue discussion)
Love, duh. She wouldn't let just anyone choke her to death. Isn't it obvious? She just doesn't realise it yet because of her repressed emotions. I've seen a lot of bad takes and people hating on the Vol 5 epilogue, saying it's one heck of a disaster but honestly, it's not. Here's why:
I think it does a very good job of humanizing Jinshi, the imperial brother. Before this point, we were always given a picture perfect image of Jinshi, in his most angelic form...but after seeing this, it looks like he's very much capable of murder, lol. No seriously!
Previously, Jinshi was always all sunshine and roses and this is the first time we see a pinnacle of his anger and frustration taking a form.
Honestly, anyone would be angry. Jinshi has done so much for MaoMao and almost everyone close to him knows that he has eyes on her and only her from pretty early on in the series and only MaoMao is the one person who seems to be in the dark. Or more precisely pretending to be in the dark.
She is literally running away from her own feelings and that's what made Jinshi so frustrated.
Tumblr media
It was the same thing in the 'Frogging chapter' (yeah, that's what we're calling it). She was "playing the role of an ignorant maid who's in the dark as to what her supiriors are upto". Jinshi was trying to tell MaoMao that he is the imperial brother and he does in fact like her but that never happened because MaoMao kept pretending that it was a frog.
Same here, even if he didn't say it outright, he was dropping so many hints! Who else could have gifted MaoMao a Moon hairpin? Who would have given her beautiful dresses to wear in the banquet?
Jinshi is called the Moon Prince for a reason and that hairpin had a moon and opium poppy. even other people recognised that it was given by him to MaoMao like Rishu's half sister, so a smartass person like Mao should be able to guess that this was all from Jinshi.
The same person who's busy day and night made preparations for her, only to see some unknown random person dancing with her and kissing her hand.
He was jealous and it's only human.
In fact, I'm glad that he's not a complete saint.
He was mad at MaoMao for pretending to be in the dark when he has gone to great lengths to take care of her, and he was hurt that the same person would even suggest him to marry someone else, i.e. consort Rishu.
Tumblr media
He was trying to tell her how he feels, and she wasn't even willing to acknowledge anything that is between them.
Adding to the fact, she knew the thing between Basen and Rishu and yet she chose to turn a blind eye, to the love that could blossom between them and suggested her name to Jinshi. It was wrong on so many levels because MaoMao knew everything and yet chose to give the most political suggestion she could think of.
Maybe because of her repressed emotions, she herself has become heartless while making decisions but just like a double edged sword, it has consequences.
So it was a mixture of anger, hurt and jealousy for Jinshi.
And he wanted MaoMao to feel the same.
The same amount of frustration he has felt as MaoMao keeps running away, just because it would be a little troublesome.
Yeah, he's shitty just like that, and so is she.
(and we love them for it 鉂わ笍)
Does it justify what he did? No. But it seems like MaoMao herself doesn't even mind it that much. She looked like well within her comfort zone. Otherwise, we know how capable she is of defending herself. But she was there, pretty much sitting with Jinshi until she dominated him completely and made her escape.
Guess they're both far from the vanilla couple that are usually expected in these kinds of series and I absolutely love it.
She was just mad he didn't poison her instead, like he promised her, to which he replied he would NEVER let her poison herself (because he also loves her a lot too, duh)
This entire scene looks more like a battle for sexual dominance, which MaoMao won.
She always has, since the very first day he saw the real her 鉂わ笍

En en/Yao is a condensed form of the relationship Mao Mao can imagine with Jinshi (Spoilers until LN 9)
One of the frustrating things as a Jinmao shipper is that Mao Mao is let's say subtle in her affection for Jinshi. Most of the romantic affection comes from Jinshi and it's mostly Dubcon (consider this your content warning) Does Mao Mao even love him? A question for Jinshi and a question for the reader because Maomao is deeply deeply in denial of her own feelings. She is so much in denial she isn't even thinking them. (And this is confirmed in the novel - Mao Mao will refuse to think about stuff that makes her uncomfortable) So how can an author show that there is something there: Through parallels of course:
In comes the lesbian pair En'en/Yao
En'en is very open about her affection for Yao. She loves Yao so much that she goes wherever Yao goes, is dismayed and loses all will to live when they are separated, finds excuses to touch Yao (like preparing only one umbrella), spends all her money for ingredients for good food/stuff she thinks will help Yao in the long run. She loves Yao so much it becomes controlling and uncomfortable sometimes. It has also a slightly sadistic edge. (giving Yao frogs to grow her breasts, enjoying it when Yao struggles). So parallels - En en is Jinshi right? The love, the separation anxiety, the overstepping of boundaries - it all fits. Yaos name even rhymes with Mao Mao.
WRONG! En'en is parallel to Mao Mao. They are both geniuses, they are smart, they don't care what others thinking, the have a certain ruthlessness to them. They even look a bit alike. And Yao is a lot like Jinshi: she is a sheltered young person, who tries to escape the control of a male relative who wants her to take over a role she doesn't want. She is described as beautiful and hard working. She doesn't know a lot about the world but she's trying very hard. She even is as childish as Jinshi.
And here comes the interesting thing: Mao Mao looks at En'en/Yao and describes their relationship as the perfect Servant/Master relationship. Even though she describes En'ens devotion as twisted, she says it's okay because Yao isn't reciprocating. En'en can love Yao freely without having to fear that Yao might love her back. That's how Mao Mao sees it. This is a love Mao Mao is comfortable with. Because it's a hopeless. Mao Mao doesn't see herself as a loving person. She sees her special interests and believes that she will always choose them over people and because she cannot love correctly she wants to be used instead. she wants to be a tool that can be discarded so that noone ever gets the idea of sending fingers in the mail just because she hasn't loved them enough. But when this safety is established she can love freely. She can have sexual fantasies about Jinshi being ravished (fantasies that stop immediately when she discovers that she is the object of his sexual desires), she can take care of all of his needs. En'en is devoted to her mistress, but a lot of claims Mao Mao makes about En'en read like projection from Mao Maos side to me. Here again is a save space where she can fantasize about completely taking care of a master without the terrifying ordeal of that master wanting her back.
