It surprises me when people say Chapel doesn’t have a trait, personality, or plotline other than being Spock’s love interest... Let me list all the things we know and have seen about this amazing character.
Christine Chapel is a nurse on The Enterprise. She is on civilian exchange from the Stanford Morehouse Epigenetic Project. She is also a part of Starfleet’s initiative to better observe alien cultures without contamination.
M’Benga treats her as an equal. Pike called her “doctor” in the very first episode which suggests that her medical knowledge and experience must be impressive.
She is an expert on genetic modification. She can mess with your genome and temporarily turn you into an Alien. And she makes it look easy.
She is also interested in archeological medicine. She is doing fieldwork, making discoveries, and writing papers on the subject while doing her other duties on the ship.
Long story short she is quite the genius!
She is outgoing, friendly, witty, funny, adventurous, strong, brave but also compassionate and emotional.
She doesn’t judge, she accepts people for who they are.
She is confident in her abilities. She doesn’t take anyone’s BS. “I don’t think the Vulcan Fellowship is ready for me”… No one, not even Vulcans can bully or make her feel insecure.
But when she was a kid she was bullied. Milo, her Malamute, bit one of those bullies. Good boy!
As it was implied in one of the episodes she is most probably bi.
She has a vulnerable side. She is afraid of commitment. Afraid of romantic relationships getting deep. Perhaps even afraid of falling in love. She uses humor when things get too serious or personal for her. There is a story waiting to unfold in time. And i can’t wait to know more of it!
She was in the Klingon War with M'Benga. They witnessed the ugly face of war and had to make some hard decisions. They used (perhaps even developed) an illegal serum that temporarily gives them enough power and stamina to survive against Klingons. This left a scar on her as much as it did on M'Benga. We will revisit this story in episode 8 (i guess).
She knows how to fight. She is a quick thinker during stressful situations. And she is a badass. For example, she can handle space pirates and all she needs is a hypospray! She can deal with baby Gorns and survive!
She is heroic. She would jump into space without an EV suit to prevent a war.
Oh and she is also Spock's love interest and it's a delicious relationship that enrichens both characters.
This is what we got in 15 episodes. I'm sure we'll learn more about her and she will get new storylines in the seasons to come.

"These Old Scientists" was a gem of an episode and an instant top 10 of my all-time favourite episodes.
I also do have a few thoughts about it!!
So in the SNW era, red/maroon is usually for red shirts/security officers, notoriously known for dying faster than carnival goldfish. In the LWD era red shirts are for the command division, meaning that Pike the entire time probably thought that Mariner and Boimler were just red shirts.
Which is so funny to think about, these two capable command division ensigns getting mistaken for being in the worst career path of Starfleet at the time.
What also was quite fun was the constant making fun of Mariner and Boimler's constant casual and very specific references in their conversation. And Boimler's failings in keeping future events to himself through these references.
My favourite part however was when Boimler basically insinuated that comphet Spock was just a fad and that Spock and Chapel are doomed to fail. I love Ethan Peck and Jess Bush but I cannot stand Spock and Chapel together it just feels weird and wrong.
Mariner being obsessed with Nyota Uhura was also so valid, Uhura is so cool and one of my favourite characters I too would only care about her.
OOH- and the fact that Boimler called the Enterprise out on their xenophobia when talking about the Orions was so iconic. Defending his friends and their backgrounds/cultures is such a Boimler thing to do.
All in all- 10/10 episode. I have been waiting for this episode ever since it was first announced and this episode was the only reason I started to watch SNW. I was not disappointed!!

Oh man I am tired. But today was so wonderful. I am so lucky to have my friend with me. And I have had so much fun with Jess its wild. We didnt even like. Do a ton. But it all felt so normal. I needed this.
We were all up real late last night. James and me stayed up together a little later talking. Which honestly was also needed. I miss him. We are both so busy again and its been hard just seeing eachother as we get ready for bed. It hurts you know? But we spent some time and that was good.
But i could have slept better. I forgot to turn my alarm off so I got woken up at 645 unexpectedly and that was upsetting. And then I had messages I couldnt go to sleep without answering. Like my brain wouldnt let me. But I was able to sleep another hour after that. So whatever.
Jess and James were already awake and dressed. Early birds. It took me a little longer to wake up fully. But once I did I felt pretty good. Jess drank her coffee and I made ice tea. And soon enough we were off!
We drove out to camp. The drive was nice but we saw an accident which thankfully wasnt serious. The trailor attached off a pick up truck flipped. But no one was hurt and we got out of there quick.
Showing camp off to Jess was a lot of fun. We went all around the figure 8 of camp. From art, to homestead, back up to the barns. It was fun. Jess is not an outdoorsy kind of girl, but she had grown leaps and bounds since weve met. And I was really proud of her. We had some really great conversations about mental health and what we are doing to be better people. We also saw a snake!
We pet the horses and walked back to art. Took a little hike in the woods. It was just so nice. And while it was humid it wasnt hot yet. It was just pleasant. Besides being just a little sweaty. But whatever.
We spent about a half hour working in the art building. Jess helped me bag all the clay I would need for monday and tuesday. Because she is excellent and the best. It would have taken me forever to do all that work. I cut clay and made balls while she put it in bags and kept count. It was excellent team work.
We decided to have lunch before we went to amazing glaze to paint pottery.
But I wasnt really sure where to go. I knew that there is that BBQ place James likes not to far, but we didnt want BBQ.
But we used it as a landmark. And Jess put it in the gps and we headed towards that. Which actually lead us to the amish market!
Which ended up being the perfect choice. It gave us a bathroom to use, and then we got so much candy and snacks. And I got deviled eggs and a pretzel and she got pasta salad and cheesey potatoes. And we both got donuts.I also got to get more gem fragments for my collection.  And then we had a picnic in the car.
I was just having a blast though. It just feels so nice to have someone I fit with so well. It has been hard wearing masks so much and trying to give eachother space. And I wont lie and say weve been perfect. But we are trying.
We left and almost have some old man hit us who was driving crazy through the parking lot. But we were okay. Just scared me.
But we got to amazing glaze early. And no one else was there so we got the place to ourselves for most of the time there.
They took our temperatures. And the ways they are trying to make sure things are low contact, we couldnt touch the ceramics before we picked a piece, and they pour the paints for us. They also have baskets on our tables with all the tools we needed (except for a few that we would get later when needed), I felt really safe. We kept our masks on the whole time except to drink water. And honestly it was great fun.
We decided to go a little wild and do two pieces each. I did a bowl and a piggy planter, and Jess did a heart container like I did that one time and a little strawberry dish. And it was just so fun. I am really happy with my bowl and my pig came out so stinking cute. Im excited to see how Jess's heart container comes out because its a special fancy color that is closer to real glaze. So even though its purple and red right now, It was turn into a pinkywhite and a black with copper flecks. Amazing. And her strawberry drawing is so good! We got compliments by the girls who worked there.
We were there almost 3 hours. And it was great. I will go back next week to get them. I am very excited to see how they turn out.
We went over to the wholefoods after that. I wanted to buy a plant. And we got some juice. But we bought a blueberry bush! I am excited about it.
We got home and I was kind of beat. We played animal crossing for a while. There was a bug competition today and we played that together. But it was more frustrating then expected. So we just go the prizes we wanted (I really wanted the wand and Jess gave it to me when she won it) and finished up.
We had snacks and talked. Ordered pizza. I laid on the floor. We watched videos. And it was just really nice.
Our pizza came. It was excellent and I am excited that I will have leftover pizza for work. And tonight has just been really nice. But I am very tired. We both got showered. And now we are hanging out in the AC in the living room. I hope James comes home soon. I am ready to sleep.
I hope you all have a good night and the fireworks dont bother you too much. Its been going on here for hours now. You can kind of ignore it when your near the air conditioner but it is still really unsetting and I keep jumping. Its got me a little upset honestly.
Have a good day tomorrow everyone. Be safe out there.

Fuck you for making me think.
16&17: A song you’d listen to during hard/rough/kinky/soft/slow/passionate sex?
I'm combining this bc sometimes sex is slow and hard or passionate and rough, etc.
OKAY, SO. I actually don't have a playlist for this bc 1. I mostly have fucked at other ppl's places (I'm really weird about having ppl in my space) 2. Majority times we've started fooling around while watching TV so that was on in the background 3. I'm big on hearing my partner + dirty talk so I don't mind it being quiet in the background.
So I went through my Spotify and found some stuff I like.
Haunted - Stwo feat Sevdaliza
The whole Dirty Computer album - Janelle Monae (especially I Like That)
Money - Cardi B
Chi Chi - Azaelia Banks
The whole Sixteen Stone album - Bush (except Glycerine bc I'll probably cry 😂)
Closer - NIN (I'm basic)
Creep ‐ Stone Temple Pilots, Radiohead
Anything Could Happen - Ellie Goulding (specifically bc of the scene in New Girl where Nick picks Jess up and carries her to her bed and also can we talk about when he kisses her for the first time, season two is a gem).
ALSO. I want to say any and all 90s R&B but in reality I would probably start singing instead of fucking.
21: Have you ever had a threesome? If not, would you?
I have! They're how I realized I really like women and wanted to pursue that further. And after a few of them, I've worked out that I need a clear power dynamic, either two people domming me, or me and someone domming someone else, never me subbing with another sub, because I'm a spoiled brat, hah.
They're fun for once in a while, but I prefer one on one. Too much sensory overload and me being in my head to love them on a regular basis.

I want to see what our expectations are because it wouldn't be good if they're not matched up. They say they don't feel bad but then they cry. They say what do I want to do. I say I need to think and talk but I don't know what to say yet, and they say sleep on it. We have difficulty sleeping and teefah watches lots of tiktoks during this night. Wake and go to the cafe, talking about river's situation and their partner who doesn't feel butterflies for them but accepts money from his fundraiser.
Florenza's film screening, it's really nice holding teefah's hand and it feels right sitting together and then hanging out with alice and julia. Florenza gives us kolyva in tiny plastic tubs, their film shows themsevles and their mum, tells us about Ronnie at deptford market and his pomegranates, Raks opens and deseeds the fruit. A film about Mexico City and about Naples too. Alice and julia really like teefah. Their margerita cocktail comes as a pizza. A level biology meme. Komodo dragon. Mouse plague. Julia's wraparound top. Looking at a note teefah made with their favourite lyric from each Laura Marling song. They say it's more than a life goal, it's like bucket list to go and see her in concert. Talking about how to influence young kids' lives cos I'm anxious about my nephew. They say you can't shape them that much because they're their own person.
How do I feel? It's not serious because I don't have the urge to text them, I don't feel giddy or butterflies, I haven't daydreamed about them/it's easy to not think about them, we don't send each other pictures, I often forget things they tell me, (I sexually and romantically desire others? - degree of relevancy to this is arguable but is definitely at least a practical factor), I don't talk about them to Vix and Ella like I do past partners. The things I like are being intimate, touching in a familiar way, sharing media like films and games together, being in the company of someone who's kind and helpful, having someone who finds me sexy, thinking that they're sexy (but do I FEEL that they're sexy!??), hanging out with someone knowledgeable about a different thing (medicine), knowing they are savvy about culture, knowing they're from north london and they understand a certain experience, the music they like and introduce to me, the fact they are up for most things when it comes to socialising, they're approved by my friends and would fit in/be nice to see more in a group setting.

Mistletoe
day three - mistletoe
takes place a year after day two
[more works by me]
-----
They arrive at Los Angeles almost at night in the 23. Gabriel could still have gone to quickly visit his family, but he gave Jesse the excuse that he was tired, but Jesse knew better. He didn’t want to leave his agent alone so quickly, in a town unknown to him. They watched movies and ordered pizza to relax before bed, though Jesse had trouble falling asleep. He kept wondering about the next day, when they will go to Gabriel’s old home and spend the 24 together. They would return on the 25 to spend more time and open presents. Gabriel had brought two bags full of them that rested on a corner.
He turns on his other side, to have a look at Gabe, and his heart flutters when he sees him asleep, facing Jesse on the bed beside his. The cowboy’s gaze traces the curve of his commander’s body, from his shoulder down to his narrowed waits and up his thigh. He focuses on his face, on the little details he can see in the low light. His eyelids look softly closed, and his mouth parted. He breathes with his commander, focuses on how soothing he looks. He can feel his brain relaxing, letting go of the anxiety and his body going numb with every breath until his eyelids feel too heavy to keep open and he drifts asleep.
Jesse regrets coming when they walk around the house, open the fence and Gabriel shouts ‘I’m home!’ Next thing he knows, a stampede of people come over to hug him. First comes an older woman with dark gray hair, wearing a colorful blouse and skirt. Then come a trio of girls, two twins and an older one, Gabriel’s sisters. Suddenly, Jesse feels small and like a burden, someone who’s only there to carry one bag of presents for all these people. He looks back, they won’t even notice if he slips out. He could afford a nice motel for the holidays—
“This must be Jesse!” The older woman says and places her hands on his shoulders. She’s smaller than him, and her eyes hold wisdom, along with a lot of joy that the years brought to her. “Gabriel has talked a lot about you. I’m Clarisa, his mother.”
“Oh, hi,” Jesse responds, a little taken back. “Yes, I’m Jesse McCree. Nice to finally meet ya. Gabriel speaks a lot about you as well.”
“He better,” Clarisa laughs as he kisses Jesse on the cheek. “Girls, this is Gabe’s friend, Jesse!” The three sisters have turned their attention to him and Jesse feels his breath escaping. They’re beautiful, same brown eyes—the oldest has them lighter—and curly dark hair. The twins are wearing long sweaters, one red wine and another aqua blue, and black leggings. The oldest has jeans and an ugly Christmas sweater.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Delilah,” the oldest says.
“Liliana,” the twin with the red sweater says.
“Mariana,” says the other. They’re younger than Gabriel and it shows on their faces. “You must see Gabe’s baby pictures!”
“Forget his baby pictures, we have his teen pictures!” Liliana adds.
“Wasn’t plannin’ on leavin’ without seeing those gems,” Jesse says and looks over at Gabriel, who’s too busy picking up a child to listen. “Is there always this many of ya?”
The girls laugh before Delilah says, “it’s only two; wait until our older cousin comes gets off work. I heard his bringing his husband and ex-wife.”
Jesse raises an eyebrow, “Isn’t that bad?”
“Nah, she’s great! And their son’s adorable! Speaking off—Jordan! Leo!” A man looks over, he’s wearing a matching ugly sweater, and a boy about fifteen years follows, also wearing an ugly sweater. “This is my husband, Jordan, and my son, Leonardo.”
Jesse tips his hat before extending his free hand, “Nice to meet ya. I’m Jesse.”
“Likewise,” the man responds and the nods while he chews on something. “I was about to grab more coquito, would you like some?”
“If it’s not too much trouble,” Jesse answers.
“Not at all, with alcohol?”
Jesse scoffs, “Is there any other way to drink coquito?”
The man sends him a light laugh before leaving, Leo follows and Delilah takes the bag of presents so she can place them under the tree inside the house. Liliana and Mariana grab each of his arms and take him away to meet people. Jesse looks over his shoulder and Gabriel laughs at him as he finger guns him. The twins introduce him to Leliana’s boyfriend and Mariana’s girlfriend, along with their parents. They introduce him to cousins, uncles, aunts and close friends, always as Gabriel’s friend. It’s only when they introduce him to their partners and close friends that they add the ‘special friend’ with a tone that stirs Jesse’s insides.
Halfway, Jordan hands him his cup of coquito and do a quick toast before he’s dragged again when the twins take him to the new people that arrive. He thought he would get to spend this time by Gabriel’s side, but so far they always seem to be at opposite sides of the big backyard, which takes him a while to actually notice every decoration. The trees and bushes are adorned with lights and a few ornaments and ribbons. There are colorful paper lanterns hanging across that will look beautiful in the night, no doubt. Music is always blasting through the speakers and someone always seems to be dancing, as well as eating. There's always food on the tables set out and drinks ready to grab. When he finally can be with Gabriel, the man looks younger, more alive than he has ever seen. He’s always smiling and his eyes twinkling. His laugh reaches Jesse’s ears as loud and clear as the songs playing, and if he could save it in a bottle and drink it later until he was delirious enough, he would ask for nothing more for the rest of his life.
At first, Jesse worries about taking too much food, until Clarisa comes after noticing his shyness and fills a plate for him, he loses the worry and feels comfortable enough to grab something every time he passes by. The twins ask him to dance and he follows gladly, not afraid to show up his moves. After that, he spots Clarisa picking up the empty plates and he hurries to help.
“You don’t have to, cariño,” she says.
“Please, I like to help.”
She smiles, “well, would you mind following me inside? There’s more to bring out.”
“More? Isn’t everyone full yet?”
She laughs and pats his shoulder, “wait until we pull out the pork. These people will look like they haven’t eaten a day in their life.”
Once in the kitchen, she asks him to clean up the plates while she grabs more food to refill them. Once that’s done, he can see more clearly what they’re having: small sandwiches, meatballs, gingerbread cookies, chicken and beef quesadillas, chicken flautas, guacamole with pita chips, chips with spinach dip, chicken wings and blue cheese, mozzarella sticks and bread rolls. Even if he didn’t want to get too full for dinner, his mouth was watering and his hands twitched to grab something.
Clarissa’s laugh brings him back, “See? Go ahead! Call first dibs!” She hands him a plate and he believes denying it will be rude, so he grabs a bit of almost everything and keeps it on a corner of the kitchen island. “Why the cowboy get-up?” She asks while refilling the guacamole bowl and handing him a bag of chips, “Put a few around, please.”
“Will do,” he answers as he pours the chips on plate around the guacamole. “My ma and I used to watch western movies late at night, when she came off work. They were always on at that hour and it stuck with me.”
“She was a doctor, right?” She looks at him and Jesse’s a little surprise. Just how much has Gabe talked about him?
“Y-yeah! One of the best. I use to go to seminars she gave, she was wonderful up on stage.”
“Did you ever wanted to follow in her footsteps?” Clarisa asks as she looks for the quesadillas she kept warm in the oven.
“At some point in my life, then…” He trails off, not really knowing how to follow. Clarisa finishes up placing the quesadillas neatly in a plate and then look at him. Her face changes to worry.
“Perdón, mijo [Sorry, boy], if I asked anything too personal.” She, and her daughters, must also know Jesse speaks Spanish. They’ve said a few lines in the language without worry Jesse might not understand, as if he was someone they talk to everyday.
“Nah, nah, it’s just that after what happened, after the doctors told me they couldn’t save her, I didn’t believe in them anymore.” Her gentle hand touches his arm, and even through the long sleeve shirt, he can feel her energy, almost as if it was his own mother’s touch.
“You let me know if ever ask about a touchy subject, besides, no sad faces today, alright?” She lifts his chin so he can look at her and he can’t help the genuine laugh that escapes him. “Also, you look handsome, never forget the hat!”
“Thanks, ma’am. Yer son helps me keep it, ya know?” He steps away from the counter and lifts one pant leg to show her the beautiful boots he only wears on special occasion so their color remains. “Got me these boots last year.”
“Oh, they’re beautiful!” She leans down to have a better look. “He has good taste in many things.” Jesse raises his leg when she’s about to touch to feel the leather and the carver design before she straightens up. “Including men.” Her smile is wicked before she turns to get the chicken flautas and Jesse’s there with a blank expression before he continues helping out.
“Already got him a slave for you, mamá?” Gabriel’s voice almost startles him, as if he had known they had been talking about him and sneaked past their senses. He approaches his mother and kisses the top of her head.
“It was about time you talked to your mamá,” she says as she rolls her eyes.
“You know how it is. I miss a year of pictures and stories, everyone wants to tell it first.” He looks over at Jesse, “you should be out there, having a good time.”
“What’d ya mean? The real party’s here,” Jesse says.
“He knows who matters in this place, who works hard to make this happen,” Clarisa says in strict voice, but it covers a lot of years of teasing.
Gabriel sighs playfully, “¿Quieres estar afuera y disfrutarte la fiesta? Yo me puedo encargar de esto. [You want to be outside and enjoy the party? I can take care of this.]”
“¡Ay, mi hijo tan bueno! Ya tú sabes como a mí me gusta acomodar todo. ¡Estaré afuera si me necesitan! [Oh, my good son! You already know how I like to prepare everything. I’ll be outside if you need me!]” She pets Jesse’s cheek before she leaves. Jesse watches her leave and laughs before Gabriel joins in and starts preparing the other dishes.
“She loves attending people, but she also deserves the time off.”
“Agree. She’s wonderful, sir.”
Gabriel elbows him, “You know you can call me Gabriel here.”
Jesse nods because he knows, and he has called Gabriel in other moments, moments he shouldn’t because he’s surrounded by other agents or Jack or Ana. Hell, even ‘Gabe’ has escaped his mouth and the older man hasn’t corrected him yet. But here, it feels too intimate, too private even to call him by those names, at least not naturally. It all feels official to something they haven’t even had yet.
“She knew about my ma,” Jesse says after a few seconds of bags, plates and soft noises. “Does she know about my pa, too?”
“Yeah, and she would send a chancla flying to his face if she ever met him,” Gabriel says, either not realizing what Jesse means by pointing it out, or brushing it off.
Jesse decides to act directly, “does she know about other agents’ parents?”
Gabriel remains quiet as he places gingerbread cookies on a plate, but didn’t even flinch when Jesse asked. Maybe he knew what Jesse was implying. ”You’ve grown so much since you joined, Jesse. In many way. You’ve become an important asset to Blackwatch, so yeah, I talk about you to her. About how good you are at taking care of your teammates, how you’ve saved my ass in the last six years even after I yell at you for it.” There’s a glint of gratitude in Gabriel’s eyes and Jesse chuckles. “How you didn’t let your past determine your future and you chose the right side—even if the other was prison—you accepted Blackwatch after you joined. And you let us accept you. You grew from that and became someone you can be proud of in the future, someone I’m happy to bring here.”
“Chucks, Gabe,” Jesse looks down, hiding his blush. “Didn’t expect that.”
“Hey,” Gabriel says and lifts Jesse’s chin, like his mother did, but this touch makes Jesse shiver, makes him follow every moment like a puppet under Gabriel’s control. “It’s time you start expecting good things, Jesse.”
Jesse smiles, and tries to control the warmth running through his body. He looks at Gabriel and thinks it’s the best thing in the world to be on the edge of his fingertips, and by his side on such special occasions that means a lot to him.
“Seems like you guys need help,” Jordan steps into the kitchen, and Gabriel’s hand falls from Jesse’s chin.
“I can take these ahead,” Gabriel says, grabbing one plate on each hand. “Can you help with the rest?”
“Sure,” the man says before Gabriel walks away. When he passes behind Jesse, he teases the cowboy’s hat and laughs before taking two plates. Jesse follows with two more and Gabriel returns until the tables are full again.
That’s when things change. When Jesse places the last plate on the table, and turns around, the twins are there, giggling. He’s about to ask what’s funny when both kiss him at the same time on his cheeks and Liliana asks him to dance again. When the song ends, Mariana’s girlfriend, Mariela, asks to take the next one, but not before also kissing him in the cheek. When they’re done, he retreats to get some water, where a little girl is trying to grab a cookie.
“Let me get that for you, lil lady,” Jesse says and grabs the treat for her. The quiet girl smiles at him before her eyes focus on his hat, which is not new to Jesse, but then she curls her little finger so he leans down. He follows and he thin lips press quickly to his cheek before she hurries off. He takes it as a thank you, before grabbing his cup and continuing mingling with the rest. He’s about to walk towards Gabe when he’s stopped by Clarisa, who wants him to meet the neighbors that just arrive. They’re daughter, who seems to be about Jesse’s age isn’t shy about giving him flirty eyes and he’s sure her lips linger too much on his cheek.
It goes on like this. Two other twins, who he can’t remember who they belong to, kiss his cheeks too. As well as a few other women and younger girls. Even Clarisa does it, one for each cheek. He doesn’t get much time to think it over since they usually dive into conversation after that, or it happens when he doesn’t expect it. If Gabe’s family was this affectionate, why hasn’t it shown through Gabriel? At least in kisses, because they have hugged and grabbed each other’s wrists, along with miscellaneous touches like the one Gabe did earlier, or when he brushed Jesse’s hair after the cowboy got hit in the head—though that happened again one time when Gabriel thought his hair was too long. Yet his hand brushed it with longing, as if he never wanted to let go.
When he sees two plates of food become empty again, he decides to go place them in the kitchen and see if there’s more food to put out. He finds Gabriel in the kitchen, who had the same idea and was filling up the flautas plate again. Though eating them was more like it.
“Don’t let yer ma catch ya,” Jesse jokes as he looks for the guacamole. “Man, yer family is great. They’re like black holes.”
“You’d fit right in,” Gabriel comments and Jesse turns to him. His sees his eyes briefly shift to his hat then back to his eyes.
“When’s dinner?”
“In about an hour, tio’s coming with the pork. We always let him cook it there since there’s less hassle.”
“Need any help?”
“I could use it. I’m usually in charge of setting up the table and getting the sides and the rest of the meal ready.” Gabriel steps closer to him, steady, as if Jesse will run.
“I’m yer guy,” Jesse comments, shifting on his feet when Gabriel steps closer. “It’ll be like last year.”
Gabriel scoffs, and he’s close enough for his breath to brush Jesse’s face. For their chest to almost touch if Jesse breathes too hard, which he’s trying not to do as he keeps his breathing steady, even if he’s lungs are gasping for air and his brain’s spiraling as it starts feeling light. Jesse steps back, knowing the kitchen counter is right there, just to feel trap, just to have an excuse as to why he didn’t stepped away. And he’s glad Gabriel steps closer, his smile growing to something wicked.
Gabriel’s hand goes to Jesse’s hat and pulls something off. When Jesse looks up, he’s holding a mistletoe with a strip of tape. “Do you remember that story I told you about last year?”
Jesse laughs, almost chokes with the knot in his throat. “There was so much happening, but I was stupid not to realize why everyone’s kissin’ me all of a sudden.”
Gabriel chuckles, “Like you need a mistletoe for people to kiss you.”
Jesse’s cocky smile drops, his heart thumps against his bones and his blood runs hot. He swallows hard, and notices clearly how Gabe’s eyes follow the motion, and go up to his lips. Jesse can’t help it, there’s still a devil in him that tells him to lick his lips, and he sees how Gabriel licks his own, before he gazes up at Jesse’s eyes. Jesse takes the dive and wraps his hands around Gabriel’s neck, pulling him to meet him in a kiss. Gabriel breathes deep before he responds and wraps his strong arms around Jesse’s middle. He still pushes Jesse closer to the counter, keeping him there for himself, to devour and drink his breath.
“Seems like you needed it,” Jesse says, almost breathless against Gabe’s mouth.
“Just waiting for the right moment,” Gabriel responds, one of his thumbs drawing circles over Jesse’ shirt. “I think this one’s pretty perfect.”
“Not. Yet,” Jesse says, in a dreamy, almost delirious voice, before he leans forward and kisses Gabriel again. This time, he pushes Gabriel, until the older man’s waits hits the other counter, pushing a plate close at the edge against bottles of species and making them knock against each other. He laughs in the kiss while Gabriel smiles and bites the cowboy’s bottom lip lightly. The action causes a soft moan from Jesse and makes him pull Gabriel towards him, as a sign to do it again, but Gabriel doesn’t, and Jesse knows he does it because he wants to hear Jesse say it, but this isn’t the place to beg.
--
When everyone’s fed and tired, when everyone but Gabe, Jesse, his mother and the twins leave, and the dishes are cleaned by Gabriel and Jesse, the five of them sit on the couch, after some delicate steps between all the presents pile and littered around the three. It isn’t big, which makes the amount of gifts underneath it look massive. Jesse bets he could build a wall and cover the whole three. The little kid in him wants to read all the names, find how many are for who. He’s sure he can expect one from Gabe since he hadn’t given anything so far. His stomach flips when he thinks about sitting by himself the next day, with one present on his lap while the others keep opening and create an ocean of wrapping paper on the floor. He looks at Gabriel, highlighted by the Christmas lights and colors, and he thinks it’ll be best to worry about that when the time comes.
Jesse was close to Gabriel’s side, hoping it would be enough for the ladies to not notice something was different. He tried to keep everything normal after the kiss, hoping no one could tell they almost made a mess in the kitchen after Gabriel got carried away and lifted him on the counter for a minute or two.
“I never saw you bring up your bags, Gabe,” Clarisa points out, while the twins look almost asleep by her side.
“They’re in a motel close by,” Gabriel responds and his mother gives him a stern look. “I wasn’t going to leave Jesse there by himself.”
“Of course not! Both of you can stay here. The bed in your old room is big enough for both of you.”
Jesse’s eyes widen and he eyes Gabriel quickly, but the man doesn’t look bothered.
“Oh, no! One bed!” Mariana says.
Liliana laughs and adds, “whatever shall they do?!”

Relish the Rest of Summer in Victoria with Show Me Melbourne
Victoria is known for its sporting culture, rich history, diverse cuisine options, fine wines, and for being nominated as the most liveable city in the world since 2011. Its capital city is a spectacular destination that attracted 32.1 million tourists between July 2018 and June 2019, but long before Melbourne became a thriving metropolis, it was known as Batmania.
The origins of this peculiar name have nothing to do with Bruce Wayne, but perhaps in an alternate universe, Melbourne’s spectacular skyline could be an ideal setting as he saves the day.
Instead, Batmania’s origins have more to do with one of the founding fathers, John Batman, who stumbled across this gem situated on the southeastern fringe of the country and saw the potential it had.
Fast-forward 185 years and modern-day Melbourne now beams as a fetching, multi-cultural urban haven infused with opportunity and diversity.
There really isn’t more convincing that needs to be done, but from a wayfaring perspective, it may be best to delve deep into what Victoria’s Capital has to offer with the help of Show Me Melbourne.

Step Up the Sightseeing
Show Me Melbourne has been at the forefront of taking their guests down the unexplored alleys of the city and into the places that sometimes, even locals are unaware of.
Based on their specialised itineraries that focus on sporting culture, shopping excursions, history, and culture, wanderlust warriors may find themselves immersed in a uniquely crafted experience.
Jess Lothian, Show Me Melbourne’s proprietor, and her team of expert guides takes requests to heart and as they expand, their excursions have grown with the needs of their guests. They believe that technology has empowered travellers to make buying decisions on the move.
All they need to do is open up Google Maps to find the best local restaurants, attractions, and photo spots, but beyond that, it remains vital to share tips on how to make the most of their visit to Melbourne.
“We want to show them it is better to have a guide to experience the city and that we can give them a unique experience,” says Jess.

An Authentic Concept
Show Me Melbourne’s aim is to show the human face of the city. The love for shared experiences is narrated across a broad backdrop of all the things that serves as a platform to produce a multitude of excursions that are both memorable and immersive.
“We make a point of it to show as much as we can in our tours, but it’s virtually impossible to visit every single place of interest in Melbourne, so we tend to pass on tailored city guides that help our guests experience the city on their own,” observes Jess. “Sometimes these guides inspire a guest to ask for a private tour which is a brilliant opportunity to venture even further off the beaten track.”
Apart from Show Me Melbourne’s curated experiences, Jess suggests a few of her favourite must-visit attractions for those who wish to explore the city’s hidden treasures.
Great Ocean Road
Hit the open road on one of the most scenic drives in Australia (and probably in the world) across 243 kilometres. This iconic stretch starts in Torquay – the surfing capital of the world – and ends in the quaint fishing village knows as Port Fairy.
Yarra Valley
“Yarra Valley is a region some 30 kilometres east of Melbourne’s central business district through which the famous Yarra River flows. It is also Victoria’s oldest wine region, dating back to 1838 and produces world-class chardonnay and pinot noir” says Jess.
She also notes that this area is enriched with a plenty of scenic beauty and sprawling acres of stunning vineyards. This is truly the best quick escape from the city’s bustle, and a wonderful region to savour local produce.
Eau De Vie
This is a bar straight out of 1920’s prohibition in America where you are taken back to a much-forgotten era. This is the place to enjoy rare and exclusive whiskies from a large collection displayed in a cozy bar hidden behind a bookshelf.
“Eau De Vie also offers an amazing mixology masterclass – which is a perfect group excursion,” says Jess.
Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
“Brunswick Street is the epitome of diversity,” says Jess. “This is the heart and soul of bohemian culture – a place for live music shows, tarot readings, food trucks, art & music studios and of course, a few speakeasy’s that eventually spill out into the streets late at night.”
Old Melbourne Gaol
As a recognised landmark, this place doesn’t nearly enjoy the popularity it deserves. The Old Melbourne Gaol is where Victoria’s most notorious criminal, bush-ranger Ned Kelly (among others) was incarcerated and eventually hanged.
For Jess, this is a really interesting way to look into a different side of Melbourne’s history in a complex field with memorabilia. She also adds that “visitors can embark on ghostly night tours through the haunted building, which is thrilling to say the least.”
Comedy @ Spleen
This may be one of Melbourne’s hippest places to hang out, but it’s also the place where one can enjoy free comedy shows on a Monday night.
“Sometimes, Spleen draws some big names, and they don’t usually advertise it until a few days beforehand, “ says Jess who also adds that “even if the show is free, a tip goes a long way.”
Pink Lake
This truly bizarre sight is not what anyone would describe as a celebrated tourist spot. It’s located in a park right next to a freeway, but Jess reckons this odd-ball feature really does charm those who appreciate the weird and the wonderful. “Plus…a hot pink lake makes for a really cool Instagram post,” says Jess.
“Obviously, there is so much more to Melbourne than the things I find to be truly unique, and I believe that therein lies the true beauty of exploration.”
“Land of the best description, equal to any in the world… the most beautiful pasturage I ever saw in my life.” – John Batman.

Sunday, May 6th, 2018 – Craft Brews and Punk Rock Icons and Rising Stars Collide as Punk in Drublic Fest Makes its Way South, Kicking Off the Spring Run with an Unforgettable Day in Fort Worth
Tumblr media
Photos by Jordan Buford Photography Pairing punk music with a beer festival would probably be the antithesis of everything said style of music stands for. It could constitute as selling out, and there would surely be some individuals who would view it as such. But make that a craft beer festival and then it becomes a sort of holy matrimony, combining two different cultures where both bands and breweries are battling mainstream ideas and companies as they work to find their niche and capture an audience. And that is where the Fat Mike presents Punk In Drublic Craft Beer and Music Festival comes into play. A brainchild of NOFX’s lead vocalist and bassist "Fat" Mike Burkett, the event obviously takes its name from one of the groups’ most recognized albums, 1994’s Punk in Drublic; and even more appropriately Fat Mike teamed up with Stone Brewing to brew the NOFX themed Punk in Drublic Hoppy Lager. It’s really an interesting idea when you think about, especially considering that most craft beer festivals (at least the ones that typically take place in North Texas) cater to indie music fans. The Punk in Drublic festival instead being more dedicated to those subcultures of punk and craft beer. Originating as a 5-city west coast tour in late 2017, the event has since expanded, targeting six new markets in the spring of 2018, with Texas being the lone southern state on the schedule. Originally planning an Austin visit as well, that show was postponed and rescheduled for the fall due to the possibility of bad weather, making Fort Worth the first date of this traveling tour’s spring outing. It was a beautiful day for a festival, at least by Texas standards; and luckily the rain that had plagued the area just a few days before was no longer an issue. It was scorching, though. Every trace of shade was taken by early afternoon. For several that meant conserving their energy in the early hours of the fest, hanging out underneath the trees at the far end of Panther Island Pavilion. Patrons – which included some Austinite’s who had made the trek to North Texas, their original tickets being valid – were mostly unphased by the heat, though.
Tumblr media
It was a festival. Getting sunburned came with the territory, the majority of attendees not going to let that hinder the experience as they milled about the grounds, exploring all the craft brew options and taking advantage of the free samplings that came with the ticket. The layout of it all was straightforward and quite nice. With some food trucks, drink stands and merch booths located at the middle point of the grounds, the brewery tents were all stationed at the opposite end from the stage. That allowed festivalgoers to hangout and chat if they wanted to, without having to shout over the music in order to be heard. However, the music did seem to take priority over the other aspects of Punk in Drublic. A lineup carefully curated by NOFX, it featured friends and bands they knew people would enjoy once they saw them. The Last Gang was one of those and they had been charged with kicking things off on this afternoon; the opening chords beckoning the few hundred spectators to come closer to the stage.
Tumblr media
The trio comprised of Brenna Red, Robby Wantland and Sean Viele were feeling the heat. “It’s hot in California, but it’s really hot here!” Red -- the singer and guitarist -- remarked at one point. If it was getting to them they never allowed it to show, tearing through the half hour long set that they had, injecting it with copious amounts of venom and fury. She broke free from the microphone when she was able; Viele almost constantly roaming and darting about the stage, wielding his bass as a weapon. They were teeming with energy as they knocked out song after song, drawing from the recently released Keep Them Counting (out on Fat Wreck Chords). Polished just enough, their music still possessed that raw and gritty aspect that defines punk rock and it made quite the impression on everyone who had arrived in time for their 3:05 start time. Festivals are partly about introducing people to new bands, and The Last Gang was an excellent one to get a crash course in. They owned the stage for the time they had it, setting a high bar for even the well-established acts that were to follow, winning over a bunch of new fans in the process.
Tumblr media
Firmly rooted in punk, each act on the lineup brought something different to the table, mining their own distinct sub-genre of the style. It was nice, allowing for a smorgasbord of sounds all within the same realm. Mad Caddies were the first of the older guard of musicians set to perform, their ska punk brand of music leaving the spectators feeling invigorated.
Tumblr media
The seven-piece outfit powered through some technical difficulties early on. Sounding superb from the audience perspective, they were encountering some feedback on their end. “Let’s start that one over…” Chuck Robertson stated moments into their second number, equating the do over to being just like an eighth-grade class. After that brief setback it was smooth sailing for them; the rich and well textured “Brand New Scar” being an early highlight of their time on stage. Somewhat of a tranquil song, the ever-growing audience reacted strongly to it. The group even treated everyone to a cut from their forthcoming album. Punk Rocksteady (due for release on June 15th) will see Mad Caddies doing ska and reggae renditions of classic punk songs, one of which will be Green Day’s “She”. It bodes well for the rest of the record, because it’s a cover the way covers should be done. It was truly Mad Caddies own interpretation of the song, not merely them covering it, but restructuring it and their version sounded impeccable.
Tumblr media
They were in fine form this afternoon. The horn section of Eduardo Hernandez and Mark Bush, on the trombone and trumpet, respectively, were as dynamic as could be, not only in terms of sound, but also the spirited enthusiasm that radiated from them. Their “obligatory love song”, “Drinking for 11” was all too appropriate for a day such as this, Robertson noting in advance of the song that it was at least a love song about drinking. Having about 45-minutes to work with in all, they filled it with plenty more gems and fan favorites, managing to hit everything fans most wanted to hear while still leaving people wishing Mad Caddies could have done more.
Tumblr media
The intermission between bands allowed patrons ample time to wander around and explore all of the drinks being offered. Mid afternoon at that point, it was remarkable the amount of people beginning to make their way through the gates. The initial gathering of a few hundred was quickly increasing, hitting the thousand mark and climbing ever higher. When live music returned it was The Interrupters that were cranking it out; the Bivona brothers of Kevin, Justin and Jesse looking incredibly sharp (and hot) dressed in their suits. Aimee Interrupter rushed on stage moments later and then they were off on a rapid-fire assault that lasted much of the next hour. “A Friend Like Me” came across like some sort of anthem, one that established a solid rapport between musicians and onlookers, as if they were stressing to everyone they would not leave them disappointed. And indeed, they did not.
Tumblr media
Interrupter maintained a steady gaze with the crowd, building further upon said rapport as she worked to capture everyone’s full attention. Justin was a live wire, not letting the heat get to him as he raced and jumped about the stage, contributing significantly to the high energy display that they maintained throughout their set. Their ska influences were on prominent display during “She’s Kerosene”, the lead single from the forthcoming Fight the Good Fight (due out on June 29th), which worked the crowd into more of a frenzy; the moshing growing more intense. On that note, one person spotted in the mosh pit was wearing a inflatable T-Rex costume, which was quite entertaining to watch.
Tumblr media
The Interrupters’ first few songs in particular were carefully laid out, each one generating more excitement than the last; the group stopping only on a few occasions, either to introduce themselves or express their appreciation to people for coming out and listening. Including an explosive cover of Operation Ivy’s “Sound System”, they ultimately capped off their set with one of the most appropriate songs of the day. Taken out of context, “Family” felt like it perfectly summed up everyone there and the bond of the punk community. “This is my family. My one crazy family; the ones who understand me…” That was more than just a refrain, especially at the Punk in Drublic Festival.
Tumblr media
Dispersing each time a band finished, patrons had plenty of time to get more drinks, grab a bite to eat, socialize or whatever else they wanted to do. Everything was timed well. The downtime never dragged on; and the stage hands quickly got the stage set for the following act. By that point in the evening a staggering amount of people had congregated at Panther Island Pavilion, there not only to enjoy the day but also the band that was essentially the co-headliner of the event: Bad Religion. No one was going to miss either of the legendary punk outfits that topped the bill; and Bad Religion had a special surprise for their fans.
Tumblr media
The way that they took the stage was so compelling due to it being exceptionally casual. There was no intro music, or really anything to announce their arrival. Instead, Brian Baker and Mike Dimkich just strolled right out onto the stage and picked up their guitars, Jay Bentley doing the same with the bass, while Jamie Miller took a seat behind his drum kit. Even some of the crowd seemed unaware of it at first, fanfare erupting once they saw Greg Graffin rush out on stage. It was a refreshing entrance and it allowed Bad Religion to wield that much more authority over the spectators right out of the gate. Coming out swinging with "21st Century (Digital Boy)" (a song that, unfortunately, seems truer now than when it was written), they quickly earned the absolute attention of everyone there; the blistering riffs and commanding movements that Graffin made as he waved his arm about helping to create that moment that everyone was able to get lost in.
Tumblr media
They had bold plans for their 64-minute long set, knocking out several more songs before getting to the special part of the evening. “…We’re not used to playing in these conditions,” Graffin remarked at their first proper break, having used the word “night” out of habit. Several patrons shouted with delight upon hearing him briefly mention the Warped Tour “a long time ago” as the last time they had regularly performed in the daylight hours, his comment seeming to bring those memories flooding back to them. That was when he announced what they had prepared for everyone on this day, planning to perform one of their records in its entirety. “…We’ll do it with no interruptions. No clapping…” the frontman continued, saying that was for the “musicians”. “Not me, but these guys that need to focus and play it,” he commented, making it hard to discern if that was their wish or a joke in line with a dry sense of humor. “It’s called ‘Suffer’, and the first song on it is ‘You Are (The Government)’,” he finished.
Tumblr media
That set it all in motion, the other fourteen songs from that 1988 release coming in rapid succession. The audience couldn’t restrain themselves and applauded during the momentary silence that separated some of the tracks, leading to some friendly jokes from the band of, “I don’t remember any clapping on this album”. No spectator cared if that messed with the authenticity of the performance, they were just ecstatic to be experiencing that classic record live. It was something Graffin later admitted he never thought would happen back when they wrote and released those songs, thanking everyone for “indulging” them. Longtime fans may have been able to appreciate it more than any potential newcomers that were there, though that Suffer experience awed everyone, regardless of if they knew the songs by heart or were only somewhat familiar with them. The quick, unrelenting pace at which they tore through it made the five of them all the more riveting. They finessed the crowd incredibly well; and the rhythm section sounded superb, heavy and somewhat thrash-y. Miller was merciless with his drumming; while Baker, Dimkich, Bentley and Graffin packed as much energy as possible into the show, never slowing down even as the sun beat down on them.
Tumblr media
What could have been considered the encore tacked right onto the main set, they treated everyone to a few more favorites before concluding things. Bad Religion’s performance alone was more than worth the price of admission. Hearing Suffer from front to back was pretty much a once in a lifetime experience, the topics and messages that accompany the music still being relevant and worth heeding. Fans savored every second of it, Bad Religion effortlessly reaffirming that they are, indeed, punk legends. And there was still one iconic group left to go. At 7:42 NOFX made their own unforgettable entrance, "Fat" Mike Burkett, Eric Melvin, Aaron Abeyta and Erik Sandin taking the stage to "The Time Warp". They danced appropriately, Burkett especially shaking and grooving to the song.
Tumblr media
Their banter was just as entertaining as the music they would be cranking out, the four of them marveling at the 25-song set that their friends in Bad Religion had unleashed before ever beginning their own show. “This is why we can’t play as many songs as Bad Religion,” or something to that effect, was Burkett’s comment early on when he called attention to one fan, pondering aloud, “Who wears a blue shirt to a punk show?” It was followed by asking the guy if it was his boyfriend standing behind him, Burkett just speculating since the other individual had blue hair. Laughter ensued. As one would expect, from songs to statements, NOFX’s set was teeming with political and social commentary, often from songs that have held up far too well over the years. Though that wasn’t their exclusive focus.
Tumblr media
Melvin took the reins for the blistering “Six Years on Dope”; while “Murder the Government” and the issues that it addresses made the track feel as if it could have been written within the previous week instead of twenty-one years ago. “We’re a political band!” Burkett exclaimed a few songs later after they had finished the aggressive and insightful “The Idiots Are Taking Over”. In that same vein, they even did “Idiot Son Of An Asshole”, albeit a redux. It boasted new verses, ones written specifically about the current man in the Oval Office, and oh, how the listeners enjoyed it. The night wasn’t all laughs and political jabs, though. There were some real sincere and somber moments, provided first by the candid “Whoops, I OD'd”. And since the mood had been brought down some, it felt like an appropriate time to do a song about what Burkett described as the “worst day” of his life. Their emotional tribute to the late, great Tony Sly, “I’m So Sorry Tony” struck a chord with every soul there, that song standing as a striking homage to Sly’s life and legacy.
Tumblr media
NOFX’s set was flying by as they made quick work of the 75-minutes they had. By the time they got to some of their final numbers, their hits like “Linoleum” and “Stickin In My Eye”, it seemed as though they had only just started, Melvin, Sandin, Abeyta and Burkett still going strong, emitting the same amount of vigor and subtle hints of reckless abandon that they had when they first stepped out on stage. They soon capped off the Punk in Drublic Festival in a phenomenal fashion, having exemplified why they, too, are one of the greatest purveyors of punk music that the genre has ever known. While discussing how the Punk in Drublic Festival came about (quipping that his first choice was a “vodka and cocaine festival” but was told it would be tough to get a permit for that), Burkett gleefully exclaimed that they decided to opt for “beer and no kids”. Perhaps inadvertently, he touched on the shift that has occurred over the past dozen years or so, the younger generations no longer flocking to punk music the way that previous generations did; the Punk in Drublic Fest instead being a great way for the band to cater to their loyal supporters and punk enthusiasts who have grown up with them.
Tumblr media
It could be argued that that shift has been because punk music and the community has always been about nonconformity. It represented a way for people to rebel against the ideals that society tried to impose upon people. And in recent years, nonconformity has become somewhat of a mainstream thing when you think about it, particularly among said younger generations who have had more freedom to pursue life on their terms instead of firmly adhering to traditional ways. Hence the slight decline that punk has had, at least from the mainstream world. It’s still out there. As was evident this day the icons of the genre still command as loyal of a following as ever. Plenty of other punk outfits are busy cutting their teeth and honing their skills in clubs all around the U.S. as well. You just have to know where to look for it.
Tumblr media
And equally as important to the punk landscape as the expression of nonconformity is the feeling of community, and that was what made Punk in Drublic Festival such an outstanding event. Sure, the music was a cornerstone of it, with every act being outstanding in their own right, as was the craft brews and the breweries that were on tap for the day. However, that feeling of community eclipsed it all. A wide array of people had ventured out to it on this Sunday. Many fit into what some would consider to be the traditional punk mold, from sporting mohawks or shaved heads, to wearing attire with patches of their favorite punk bands and being moderately if not heavily tattooed. On the other hand, plenty of people showed up looking like casually dressed hipsters in shorts and bland looking shirts, no ink visible, if they had any at all.
Tumblr media
The looks covered much of the imaginable spectrum, and no one was ever made to feel like they didn’t belong at Punk in Drublic. Who cared how anyone looked or chose to express themselves? Hell, that was part of the appeal. You could go to the event, let go of any inhibitions and just be you. Besides, everyone who was there was clearly bound by the same love and appreciation of punk music and brews and that was enough to cultivate a strong sense of unity. A must-see festival, Punk in Drublic Fest is poised to become a mainstay of the touring festival circuit. And if it’s done in moderation like it has been thus far, hitting a handful of different markets every six months or so, there’s no reason to doubt that there won’t be longevity for it.
Tumblr media
Hopefully it will stretch on for years to come, but in the meantime, the Punk in Drublic Festival has dates in Richmond, VA and Philadelphia, PA on May 12th and 13th as well as Brockton, MA and Pittsburgh, PA on May 19th and 20th. The rescheduled Austin, TX date is September 22nd at Circuit of The Americas. And before taking it over to Europe for the latter half of June, Thornville, OH will be the city hosting Camp Punk In Drublic, a 3-day festival that is bound to be epic. Full details on all upcoming events can be found HERE.

Brewery Employees Lose Homes to California Wine Country Fires
Fogbelt Brewing’s GM Greg Coll posted a photo of a destroyed home on Instagram.
October 17, 2017
The California wildfires that raged through the state’s wine country are now considered the deadliest cluster of fires in state history. More than 6,000 homes are gone and at least 40 people are dead.
As evacuees begin returning to their charred neighborhoods this week, local officials are warning them to brace for the worst. Brewery employees are among those impacted, from being under mandatory evacuations to losing their homes — including five team members at Bear Republic Brewing in Sonoma County.
“Needless to say, their lives will be disrupted by these events for months or even years to come,” Bear Republic says.
(READ: What Beer Lovers Can Learn from Dr. Seuss)
The brewery has set up a You Caring page to help employees Casey Clark, Kaylee Singkeo, Shawn Anderson and Rob and Cami Kent. You can find that information at the YouCaring.com page.
Christine’s phone call woke Greg up to alert him to the wildfires. (Credit: GoFundMe)
Greg Coll is the GM at Fogbelt Brewing in Santa Rosa. He lost everything in the fire. His girlfriend Christine, desperately trying to call him, finally reached him around 2:30 a.m. Greg’s sister, Ami, retells Greg’s story of what happened after the phone call the night of the fires: “As he opened the curtains to his window, he witnessed embers falling between his home and the next door neighbor’s. He grabbed his backpack, quickly threw what he could into it and made his way to the kitchen. It was bright. The home behind him was on fire too. He went out front and grabbed a hose, but the smoke was thick and he couldn’t breathe well. The tree and bushes in front were all on fire. He dropped the hose and ran to the car to leave.”
Greg lost family heirlooms as well as everything he used to run his non-profit, Ales for Autism. While he’s been volunteering to help other victims get back on their feet, Ami set up a GoFundMe page to help her brother.
Russian River and Sonoma Pride
Russian River Brewing founders Vinnie and Natalie Cilurzo are partnering with the King Ridge Foundation, a local non-profit to help low to middle income families who need help. The fundraiser is called “Sonoma Pride” and it’s raising money in several ways including monetary donations and a raffle for line cutting privileges for 2018’s Pliny the Younger release.
(BEER TRAVEL: Plan Your Next Beercation)
A dozen breweries from California to Georgia have signed on to be part of the third prong of the Sonoma Pride campaign. The breweries are making a special release beer that will be labeled Sonoma Pride, and 100 percent of the proceeds from sales will be donated. The beers are expected to be released in late October. You can see the growing list of breweries at SonomaPride.com.
“Please remind everyone you know that they can help by returning to Sonoma County.” Plow Brewing Co.
Message: Don’t Stop Visiting
While the fundraisers are direct ways to immediately help victims, these small brewery owners are also concerned about the future if travel slows. Vinnie at Russian River worries that the region’s breweries could struggle if “things don’t turn around quickly.”
(VISIT: Find a California Brewery)
Plow Brewing Company in Santa Rosa echoes that concern: “We need to remind everyone that Sonoma County is still the gem of the California coast,” the brewery writes. “Many of the businesses in Sonoma County depend on tourism and these businesses need your help. Please remind everyone you know that they can help by returning to Sonoma County and enjoying our world class restaurants, wine, and beer.”
Editor’s Note: This is a developing story on the California Wine Country wildfires. We will continue to add updates on how the fires have impacted the craft brewing community.
