historical shit:

Apollo and Midnighter were married in 2002, that's a year before section 28 got repealed.

That means if I went and picked up the issue of the authority, took it to my teacher and asked why these two men were getting married? They couldn't say anything. "Promotion of homosexuality" was illegal. And "promotion"? Well that ment anything other than saying we were perversions of gods will and would burn in hell.

Notable milestones in gay marriage, to give context,

In 2000? That's when the first state leagalized civil unions

Gay marriage was first legalized in the Netherlands on the 1st of April 2001, but it would take a while for others to catch up.

A us state first legalized it in 2004, but it would take untill 2015 for the whole country.

In the UK it took until the 5th of December 2005 for the UK to grant civil unions

And on the 4th of November 2008 in California? The right to gay marriage was overturned.

It took Ireland untill mid 2010 to grant civil unions

The united kingdom legalized gay marriage in 2014, but it would take untill 2020 for all territories to leagalize it.

What I'm trying to say here, is that Apollo and Midnighters marriage was revolutionary. It's debated if they are the first gay marriage in comics, but that doesn't diminish the importance. Their marriage and relationship is queer history.

Not to mention Their adoption and parenting of jenny quantum, while Millar may have lacked respect for any other issues, his treatment of Apollo and Midnighter is remarkabley not the butt if any jokes, and dousnt play into negative stereotypes about gay men raising children. If only he could have stretched that respect to the other members of the authority.
