Love reading your post about Vanitas. Thanks for sharing them. I also want to say, love how you wrote the reviews and analysis on anime and manga. Most blog that I know of, when they dislike something, they'll badmouth said anime/manga and that's it. But you wrote in details why you dislike something (not just said negative things about them but also there are the positive things about them).

Because of that, can I ask your thoughts about this? So my mutual and I loved Vanitas, but we cannot agree on the ships. They (my mutual) loved Vanitas/Jeanne and Noe/Domi but I loved Vanitas/Noe. I think it's obvious how Noe loved Vanitas. How about you? Based on the story which ships is more reasonable?

(Okay, I did not know if you agree with non canon shipping or not, if you're anti-shipping, please just ignore this ask. I still loved your blog).

It's all good! I think shipping, in a serious sense, is a central piece to the experience of media! Though that's a whole different conversation.

Spoilers for anime/manga of course.

Being forced to pick, with where we're at in the manga, this is a very very tough decision lol. I'd love to cheat and say I love both for different reasons.

It's really interesting how both ships mirror each though in how they're approached.

Where Vanitas is the initiator with Jeanne, it's the inverse where Noe is the one that pushes forward with Vanitas. Where Vanitas chases Jeanne initially for her hatred, it's Noe that provides the hatred for Vanitas directly. It's a very very interesting thing that's meant to draw the reader in I feel.

Similarly, look at how they've developed. The hatred of Vanitas was the initial catalyst for both, but the resolution of it was totally different. Jeanne's was immediate distaste, but she was unable to keep her distance. Noe on the other hand was closer to, "I don't like you, but I want to stay near you", which resulted in a totally different resolution. Jeanne's was all about showing Vanitas actual love and happiness, while Noe's was focusing on voicing his hatred and distaste for (pieces of) Vanitas.

Then there's the whole blood sucking thing, which is influenced by Noe's ability, but that's also sort of the point in the ship? Like, he's willing to give his blood up to Jeanne all of the time because at that point he considers it a one-sided affair where his feelings aren't in it (aside from the one romantic-y bite after Chloe), but because Noe can see into his memories with his ability he refuses Noe. It's a great piece to show the depth that exists with Vanitas and Noe vs the distance that Vanitas attempts to keep with Jeanne.

Now personally, maybe a bit of a hot take, but I think how they do the relationships, the Noe x Vanitas ship makes more sense because Vanitas is not the one that's initiated it. Vanitas talks about how he cannot love someone that does not hate him earlier on in the series, and while it's not quite true, I think it's an example of how a relationship with Vanitas should be approached, if that makes sense. If Vanitas is the one to initiate it, it's sort of a red flag (though Jeanne can just steamroll those red flags). So, having Noe initiate it puts Vanitas on his back foot and off his game to force him into points like the final episode did.

So, I might say I agree more with Noe x Vanitas? I think it's the better ship in terms of narrative, but I still do love Vanitas x Jeanne a great deal.

However, allow me to present the fresh hell that is my romantic chart for the series.

Death and trauma is a catalyst for romance in this series to almost a disturbing degree, so of course all the romantic affinities are all over the place. Anyways, allow me to begin.

Firstly, we have the line that exists with:

Domi loves -> Noe Loves -> Vanitas <- Jeanne Loves

But this is an odd one off the bat, because most likely, Vanitas does reciprocate the feelings of Noe, but not Jeanne.

Just take a look at the narrative. Vanitas promises to kill Jeanne (which is something that I believe will likely happen), while Noe is the one that is claimed to kill Vanitas in the end. The idea of killing a lover just immediately jumps out at you and continues with the theme of inverse with Noe and Jeanne.

Now, for the pieces that don't line up.

Vanitas doesn't reciprocate Jeanne's love because of her declaration of it. Straightforward and I'd already mentioned it. (though the questionable feelings that remained unaddressed through part 2 of the anime are there, there's just nothing to do with them yet aside from character analysis)

A new one though, which I think is very interesting is Noe's reasoning. Noe can't love Domi, plain and simple. He sees too much Louis in her. He simply can't love Domi because he can't see her.

Domi suffers from a similar issue. She can't see herself, so she loves Noe. He's her anchor in this life, the one thing that can still prove that she is Dominique De Sade, and not the brother that she looked up to.

Let's go further, what about Lucius loving Jeanne? Well, aside from it being a kid crush, I do think it has to do with his need to grow up quickly. He's in a position of power, and despite his ability is always looked down upon. Jeanne is the one that doesn't so of course the young boy loves her.

Speaking of younger characters, there's Mikhail. Despite Vanitas being a sibling, Mikhail sees them in a romantic context, viewing Noe directly as a rival and Vanitas as something to possess. I think in the context they see Noe as stealing their role as sibling, but due to their twisted version of it it comes off in the romantic sense. I really want to see more of Mikhail's character, because their romantic attachment to Vanitas is very interesting in how it plays somewhat similar to Jeanne's. Both see the character as their savior, but similar to when Jeanne first started voicing her romantic feelings, Vanitas treats it with more repulsion than acceptance.

Anyways, that was a bit of a heavy mess so how about a fun ship instead?

I'm a sucker for Roland and Olivier. That Golden Retriever and German Shepherd energy together is just much too fun for me. And the way they trust each other and work together consistently despite how much Olivier complains. It's just so great, and there's so much love from Roland but so much anxiety from Olivier. And they even go out to have little tea dates together and it's just so cute.

But yeah, to sum it up, if I had a gun to my head and was being forced to choose which ship was better, I'd probably say Noe x Vanitas. But on the low, I'm a bit of a sucker for toxic ships as well so Jeanne x Vanitas just gets me.

I'm watching a new show alert!! 😨

So, Vanitas no Carte (The Case Study of Vanitas) is a show that I stumbled upon yesterday, and now after watching the first 9 episodes I can confidently say: WHAT THE HECK IS THIS SHOWW? (/pos)

Like, I love it, but I'm genuinely so confused 💀. I understand the plot and everything, but the show is chaos incarnate. Vanitas, our beloved mc, is a whole ass enigma that even I can't figure out. On one hand, he's the kinkiest mfer I've ever seen in my life, on the other hand, he's the silliest mfer I've ever seen in my life, AND ON THE OTHER OTHER HAND, my man should never be a diplomat.

That's not even mentioning the shipping scene of this show. Like, wtf. Who should I ship??? Like Vanitas and Noè have great chemistry, but also Noè x Domi and Vanitas x Jeanne are great pairings as well. Not to mention that in that one episode, Domi gave a whole ass speech about the pleasure of watching a rose (Jeanne) blossom to Jeanne while dancing with her. But earlier in that same episode, Jeanne was drinking Vanitas' blood and Domi was drinking Noè's (it's a vampire anime for those unaware)??? They're all gay, always have been?? BUT THEN I ALSO SAW SPOILERS OF JEANNE TAKING CARE OF VANITAS SOOO....

And ik that last paragraph made the show sound hella weird and I swear it's not like that (90% of the time) 😭😭. Tho, i swear the show is great at doing the Japan thing of "Alright y'all how do we make these characters have sex without kissing or having sex"

Vanitas x fem!vamp!Reader

a/n: me world building for a fic I’ll never actually write? Yeah pretty much cw: fem!Reader (but written from third person as reader isn’t there), sfw, pining/angst, mature themes, unedited word count: 1.8k

“...so, are you going to tell me why that woman was so ready to come to your aid?” Noé gave Vanitas an inquisitive tip of his head, “Queen’s fang she mustn’t-”

“Ex Queen’s Fang,” Vanitas’s curt correction surprised the young man adjacent to him. Even more surprised when Vanitas wouldn’t go into detailed and only corrected him so rudely mid sentence without anything extra to add.

“Ok- Ex Queen’s Fang,” Noé emphasized to aid in showing Vanitas he was listening but that soon trickled off with the vampire’s rambling thoughts falling from his mouth, “But an Ex Queen’s Fang?! Shouldn’t they be like- Retired royalty then?! That’s the highest regard! Yes Veronica can be a bit- But Lord Ruthven is much more like what I imagined the Queen’s Fangs being like- So that woman she must be as old and she knew you does that-”

“Get to the point Noé,” Vanitas groaned already full to the brim with his cohorts ramblings. Puffing a strand out hair out of his face as he looked out at the rising Paris sun after last nights union with Charlton within the vampire world.

“Right right right,” he nodded composing his thoughts to focus on the one thing he at least knew was different last night. And that was Vanitas’s mood the second that woman came into play on the stage of their great fight. Noé looked down at his friend with violet colored eyes that were filled with nothing short of pure curiosity as the next few words left his mouth, “That woman, do you love her?”

Choking sputter on words that hadn’t even left his mouth yet. Whipping around the black haired human looked totally appalled by Noé’s seemingly simple question. All while the contradiction of blush bloomed on his pale face not to be hidden by his hair cascading over his features when he looked away.

“What did I tell you,” Vanitas grumbled, “I do not kiss and tell you utter simpleton.”

Now sharing in the embarrassment of what his comrade suggested Noé scratched at the back of his neck trying to reword what he meant, “No I just mean-” Noé searched for the right way to put what he saw last night in the fleeting memories before he lost consciousness. To which he knew Vanitas had acted different once that woman had come to confront Veronica without a second thought. A vampire going against the Queen’s Fangs were unheard of. Yet alone to aid that of a human. Noé new that much even from his sheltered up bringing. His mind circled back to the odd change in Vanitas since this all happened. Including now as he seemed to be sitting here high above all else on the bell tower like a sulking child, “I mean I hadn’t seen you act like that among someone else. How do I say- Your confidence? No not that, your showmanship? Yeah your showmanship and how you hold yourself. It changed so drastically when she came.”

Blue eyes glazed over with unenthusment for this conversation. With his chin resting on his hand Vanitas looked over at Noé only slightly, “I was about to be broken into thousands of little shards by your dearest Domi’s sister. I assure you the look you’re referring to had more to do with a life or death situation.”

“So there was a look!” Noé pointedly latched onto his last few words.

“I said it was a life or death situation!” Vanitas howled with such an indignant nature to his tone, “I said there was no look you dolt, you were losing consciousness!”

“I’ve seen the way you look at Lady Jeanne or Lady Emilia and I can without a doubt say they do not bare likeness to the way your face looked upon seeing that woman put herself between you and Veronica,” Noé and his handy detective work at hand had Vanitas bouncing his leg even as he stilled remained leaned into it with his grumpy frown mostly covered by his hand, “She knew your name, I remember that much. And you yelled at me for knowing the de Sade family?! When you’re in connects with the Queen’s Fangs!”

That right there was the tip of the iceberg. All his incorrect lollygaggings. Jumping to ideas. Tiny pea brain at work in the moment. Vanitas caved exhausted to hear the dumb dribble out of his companions otherwise clueless mouth.

“I have no connection to the Queen’s Fang you simpleton,” All the threading anxiousness drained from his tone. Even his leg quit bouncing in such a nervous manner. Leaving Vanitas simply leaning against his knees when he drew them up under his chin, “I’m the reason such a wonderful vampire had fallen from the Queen’s grace.”

Noé’s jaw dropping. He didn’t have enough time to pick it up properly before claiming a seat next to his human friend. Pressing into his side enthralled by what he had to offer in the form of a story.

“Get away from me you fool,” Vanitas’s brows pinched together under his bangs, “What do you want from me I told you she’s an ex Queen’s Fang.”

“You’re the reason she’s no longer in the court then,” Noé’s eyes grew huge, “You do love her then. But wait-” Detective Noé back on the scene as he thought for a moment, “I thought you said you loved Lady Jeanne. I do not wish for you to break your obviously ungentlemanly oath but-”

“I’m only part of why she’s no longer in the Queen’s Court,” Vanitas mumbled into the tops of his knees. Face bathed in the sun of Paris’s early morning. He didn’t think there was a lot of getting out of revealing even a few of his hidden gems at this point, “She fell in love with the original Vanitas. My master.”

Noé’s face was that of genuinely any well meaning vampire. Stories of the vampire born under a blue moon were hammered into any vampires skull. To hear such a thing didn’t seem right but intrigued him further, “The vampire of the blue moon hated vampires. Wished them all dead.”

“And human’s are scared even to this day of their lives being taken by that of a blood thirsty beast,” Vanitas popped off, unenthused, “Your point Noé?”

He was a bit taken back, “Nothing I just- I’m a little surprised nothing was ever documented of the blue moon vampire as such.”

“That’s because she liked him,” Vanitas looked out at Paris below, “But she did not love him. A woman who would not submit. To give her true name up. So he took it. My master took that name from her.”

Understanding the gravity of such a thing. A vampire’s true name being the one thing that makes them who they are. It was a wonder he’d never heard of the original Vanitas having a lover if it was in such a disgrace and brutish outcome for another vampire. She’d certainly be considered a causality of his hatred in old stories. And yet Noé saw her with his own two eyes yesterday. That he was certain. If she were to be corrupt, something must have undone it.

“...you,” Noé said almost as a whisper, “You...restored her true name didn’t you Vanitas?”

A crooked grin spread on his dark haired friend’s face. Vanitas looking over at Noé with a tipped head, “My first attempt as a doctor, or I guess as we’d call it a fellowship of healing before I actually completed my trainings.”

“Vanitas you-” Noé was horrified to even think of this, “You could have killed her doing that.”

“I know.” He answered sullenly with a look cast away from the present conversation, “But I didn’t. I knew I wouldn’t. I simply loved her too much to allow her aliments to consume her.”

Each piece presented to him left Noé certain he wasn’t getting the entire picture. Yet when he looked at the softness on Vanitas’s face and heard his voice. He knew he wasn’t lying. An oddity from the boastful man. But it was becoming easier for him to pick him apart to see the truth below.

“...I still don’t understand,” Noé mused, “If you love her...why aren’t you with her?”

“A human and a vampire? Hah!” Vanitas’s obnoxious chuckle ringing true under the brass bell they sat, “Listen to yourself! Love advice from a man who has a de Sade falling over you and yet you come to counsel me? What grand advice from someone not qualified.”

Face deepened with a frown Noé looked down at Vanitas, “Domi has nothing to do with this. I still care about her very deeply alright. I just don’t understand. An ex Queen’s Fang coming to your rescue. Do you hold her name hostage like the original Vanitas?”

“I would never,” Vanitas shot him the most venomous look Noé had ever seen on the man’s face. Enough so Noé bowed his head in apology for saying such things, “I would never hold her name above her like that monster did.”

Falling silent after his unknown slight. Noé looked down at his lap trying to find the right thing to say to his friend. Uncertain until it just kind of happened, “...does she know you have feelings for her?”

Vanitas finally untucked his legs from under him. Outstretching them towards the rising sun and the rest of Paris. Leaning back on his gloved hands and looking up at the new sky of a new day he paused for a long moment, “...she knows. I suspect she knew long before I did. Though she’s too sweet to reciprocate it. Always going on and on about how she never wishes to take advantage of me in my youth. Certain I’ll find another.”

“Well....you have found another,” Noé referenced Jeanne.

“No.” Vanitas’s expression softened and even the hint of a smile crept on his face, “I will never find another like her. For as many lives as I live I won’t love like that. But she is too kind and until I can corrupt my flesh and rid her of the guilt of having me. I will take every chance I get to use this body in a thousand different ways. Like I’m living a thousand different lives at once.” Vanitas stopped to hold up his gloved hand. Black as the night that past. Flexing his fingers under the casting rays of the golden sun he still couldn’t stop smiling, “Once I’ve lived those thousand lives and saved her from her own, then I’ll be able to be with my own true love. That, I promised her.”
