i’ve talked about the theme of grief in jfa, and i think one of the most interesting things about it is seeing it shift into the themes of t&t, which are love and devotion - whether earned or misplaced. phoenix’s naïve love for dahlia sees him eat glass and almost get convicted in the tutorial, and godot’s driving motivation is his devotion to mia. the delites’ love for one another is reciprocal, but viola and armstrong’s devotion to tigre is misplaced and exploited. gumshoe insists that you take maggey’s case because he can’t believe that she’s guilty. terry fawles, as gross as his relationship with dahlia was, represents one-sided devotion to a suicidal degree. phoenix wants to help iris because he still does really care about her. morgan acts in the name of her idea of pearl, and pearl still, in spite of everything, loves her mother. in the climax of the game, godot’s misguided idea of what mia would want shows the danger of acting on devotion to the dead, and stresses the importance of our love for the living in edgeworth and franziska defending iris (and turning a blind eye) when phoenix can’t. dahlia, again, subverts the theme by refusing to represent it - she uses and abuses the love and devotion she receives, but gives none in return

Going through Ace Attorney beta designs like I do paper stamps

What is going on?!! Juan looks more animal than human, especially in the right one! Is he even wearing pants in the right one? Why does he have one rabbit slipper on the left?

Frank looks so old and wrinkled. The fact that in the main beta Frank is smiling with his eyes shut and a camera in his hands makes me feel even more bad for him.

We could’ve had this for Wendy. The original is immaculate but a plus sized character was lost.💔

These designs are better than Shelly's canon one, rather average looking guys that suit the concept of a master assassin. Obviously excluding whatever is going on with the weird flip thing in the center.

I really like this beta design of Matt. Is the person next to him meant be his manager?

Hyper femme vs hyper masc Max and I love both. Instead of a magician he was a Drag Queen.

Too much anime

Fluffy hair Jinxie reminds me of a Hex Maniac. Wonder what her personality was designed to be at this time, Pentagrams on the sleeve cuffs don’t match with her canon personality. Very interested in the writings on her dress collar.

Now the pentagram is even more apparent and the writing is now on her dress straps. It looks like she has bandaids on her forehead rather than runes, especially with the marks on her arms and hands

So I saw some fics and posts about the culprits in Ace attorney being like a family and I want to add something about it just because I can.

An average conversation in this place is like:

I've gotta defend my boi Armstrong. I can't read the writers' or the localizers' minds, so I don't know exactly what the intentions for this character was. What I do know is the comments I've seen on reddit, on tumblr, in the youtube comment sections, and from the youtubers playing the game themselves. The frequently repeated opinions are that Jean Armstrong is an uncomfortable character, that he's nothing more than a stack of numerous homophobic and transphobic stereotypes, that he aged like milk.

However, I am several flavours of queer myself, and I absolutely love Jean Armstrong. He's fun, he's campy, he's complicated. Just about every "bad stereotype" about him doesn't ring as such to me, but rather as a surprisingly accurate depiction of an effeminate queer man.

Tons of cis gay men refer to themselves and other queer men with terms like "girl", "girlfriend", "sister", "queen", etc. Tons of queer men lean in to their more typically feminine traits. I believe the interpretation by the localization team was that he is a cis gay man with a non-passing drag persona, though my personal favourite interpretation is that Armstrong is either genderfluid or bigender and genuinely identifies as both male and female.

I don't think I've seen this particular complaint, but I could see it being made, that his overly flirtatious personality is too much, and perhaps leans into the idea of queer men being promiscuous or predatory, but again, there are plenty of flirtatious characters in this series, and his personality doesn't go so far as to feel creepy.

I have also seen a handful of other queer fans complaining about him being a pickpocket, largely because they're upset that one of the few canonically and overtly queer characters has such a negative character trait. However, I think it's stupid to act like queer characters aren't capable of doing bad things, and when you compare is stealing small objects off of customers to the murders and smuggling and such that run rampant throughout this series, it really isn't that big of a deal. Not to mention his unfortunate falling in with Tigre is both understandable (needing money to open up the restaurant of his dreams) and sympathetic (being unable to pay back his loans because his food wasn't selling well).

I don't know, I just think people are too harsh to Armstrong. Maybe he was intended to be an offensive stereotype and the butt of the joke when the game was made, I don't know for sure, but even if that's the case, I kind of feel like they accidentally predicted the future of queerness, given that the case takes place in early 2019.
