My brain kind of exploded when I discovered that Twitter thread collecting clips from BL audio dramas in which Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Vash's voice actor) acted out gay sex scenes (because Trigun Stampede's fandom is the horniest fandom in the world), and I could only wonder, as I listened to those breathy moans, "What the hell is the context of Japanese culture that lets this sort of thing even exist?"
Through googling, I found an article on animenewsnetwork.com that addresses this exact question: an "Answerman with Justin Sevakis" column about the art and business of BL audio dramas.
The question: "So this is something that I've always wondered about, most Yaoi manga tend to get adapted into drama cds or BL cds as some would like to call them. The male voice actors in these things (like Kamiya Hiroshi and Daisuke Ono) tend to be quite popular in anime fandom and have voiced many popular anime characters. Any reason why they lend their voices to these things? Is it to boost their popularity or to make extra cash?"
The answer: "Presumably straight voice actors take on gay roles for the same reason other straight actors take on gay roles, and why gay actors take on straight roles: because it's their job to act like someone they are not, and to pretend to do things they are not doing.
On-screen actors regularly have to make out with people they're not attracted to. All a voice actor has to do is say a few steamy lines and breathe heavily into a microphone, well away from human contact. Their character may do a whole host of things that they, themselves, are not into. The character could be evil, and could torture and kill people. Their character could be really weak-willed and stupid and let themselves be taken advantage of. None of that might line up with who the voice actor is, or who they want to be. But that doesn't matter, because they're an actor.
Anybody who has seriously studied acting can tell you that an actor's job is to empathize with their character, not judge them. Their job is to find the things within themselves that can bring that character to life. This can require them to do things -- sometimes physically -- that they might not want to do themselves. It is not real, and it is not them doing it. For them, it is work. Sometimes, it's very rewarding work.
Drama CDs have been around nearly as long as CDs. (I can't find evidence of drama LPs, but perhaps those existed too.) Often a manga publisher will commission a drama CD to see if there's enough of a fanbase to make an anime. Sometimes they're just made to supplement a franchise. They do sell, sometimes quite well, which means money for everybody. Radio dramas still exist in Japan (and indeed, many countries), and so drama CDs are pretty common things. There was even a drama CD for Perfect Blue, which was actually the drama-within-a-drama series the characters were filming, Double Bind! It's pretty cool.
Yaoi manga usually don't sell in the crazy numbers that more mainstream manga does, but drama CDs are very cheap to make compared to an anime. Even if there's no moving artwork, many fans just want to hear the characters be brought to life in SOME way, and drama CDs are a good way of doing that without having to worry about making back a huge investment.
There are good business reasons to be involved in yaoi. Yaoi fans are extremely passionate, and will likely buy CDs involving the series they like, which a voice actor would get royalties from. Some of those fans may even become a fans of the voice actor, and would then buy their solo CDs, show up at events and get autographs, and follow their work in other works. That's the sort of thing that can really boost a voice actor's career.
Hentai voice acting is, in fact, not something that most successful voice actors want to be caught doing. It pays poorly, it can sully their reputation after the fact, if their image doesn't line up with having dirty material in their filmography. Hentai is mostly voiced by junior level voice actors who are just getting started, and many use pseudonyms. However, nobody is really asking them to take off their clothes, and work is work, so many voice actors do it anyway.
But yaoi is usually not all that dirty. It's clean enough to be aired on television (even if some of it needs to be censored). There really isn't much stigma attached to voicing a yaoi show. Many prominent male voice actors do it, and are quite proud of it. They attend promotional events, assist in marketing the show, and sign autographs on DVDs. And I'm sure they get paid quite handsomely for it."

I'd rather support chinese BL (novel, manhua) and their fans with their complicated lore and cultivation system, with manhwa BL fans, the fujodanjin of animanga BL fans, all of which can have a homophobic bunch but somehow I can still find a safe space and even proshipping. Compared to Thai BL and the fans cuz a lot of the stories are not that good. They rely too much on copying East Asian BL tropes and some of the actors and writers are so homophobic. Lots of production drama and is just a mess. A lot of rookie actors only play BL because it's an easy and quick cast if you're attractive, the plot is easy and the acting is easy. Somehow actual queer actors are not allowed to cast.
I know this fast cash thing is also common between Japanese BL audio drama seiyuus and live actors too, beginners used to use BL as a gig to kick start their career and they can use different stage names and though I'm not surprised if some of them are homophobic (I'm speaking as another mlm Asian here. Asian people in general are still so blatantly queerphobic) but at least most work backstage and it's less common to celebify seiyuus than live actors.
I find more diversity in East Asian BL fans than Thai fans it feels like it's just stuck in early 2000s. Fujo stereotype on steroids and I actually like fujos. Some of my girl friends who like BL are a-okay but the recent trend of saying, "how can I be homophobic? (raikan topeni 18+ warning)" sounds exactly like "I'm not homophobic, I have gay friends (who I cherry pick so I can use them as a moral shield)".
Maybe for some MLM, they hate the idea of non-men jacking off to MLM sex but I don't... as long as they're cool with me existing.
Note: when I say thai BL fans, this includes international thai BL fans and not just locals.
--
It seems like there's an evolution in both BL and queer media in a given place. Two different evolutions. As an industry evolves, it goes through a bunch of phases, and the earlier ones aren't usually ones I like. Or at least that's how it seems to me.

Audio clip taken from BL drama CD, Ura Katana Kami no Ki.
A short audio I've edited,(I had to edit out just the character names that are spoken in this audio, bc I felt like it, sorry🤪)but it's just a small-but-hot kiss scene voiced by X and Zero's seiyuus/Japanese VAs!!!!😳🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
X is Shinkai the protagonist, but what I didn't realize from what I've read from the info was Zero is Shiva/the sword!!!!
Like, WHY DIDN'T I NOT KNOW!???😲😲😲😲😲😲
Anyway the characters in this scene are NOT an official pairing. Well, you get the idea how the plot in the drama CD/Manga goes.
And yeah I hate having to make a small thumbnail cover which doesn't pretty much relate to this scene.😑

DIABOLIK LOVERS Para-Selene Animate Tokuten Drama CD [Shin ver.]
Tumblr media
Original title: DIABOLIK LOVERS Para-Selene Vol. 4 月浪シン アニメイト 各巻購入特典ドラ
Source: Diabolik Lovers Para-Selene Vol. 4 Animate Tokuten CD
Audio: Here
Seiyuu: Morikubo Shoutaro
Translator’s note: A festival date is just about as Japanese as it can get, haha. The whole ‘guy winning a stuffed animal at the shooting gallery and then giving it to his girl’ is pretty cheesy too, but it being a wolf plushie is pretty cute. In my head, it was basically a chibified version of Shin’s wolf form. uwu
“Haah...Good grief...I came here with you to the temple festival (1) because you kept on asking but why is it this crowded...?”
You apologize.
“It’s fine. ...Anyway, you actually went the extra mile put on a yukata, huh?”
You explain that it’s part of the tradition.
“I mean, I guess that sorta stuff isn’t bad.”
*Rustle*
“Come on, give me your hand. If you get lost somehow, I’ll be the one having to run around looking for you.”
You thank him for being so considerate towards you.
“Are you stupid? I just don’t want to deal with the trouble. Come on, let’s go.”
*TIMESKIP*
“Haah...It really is crowded. Humans love flocking together at these kind of get-togethers, don’t they? ...How much longer are we going to walk around? I’m starting to get a little sick of it. Any stalls you want to check out?”
You frown.
“What’s wrong? Too many options to the point where you can’t make up your mind? You’re making this whole experience even more of a pain.”
The two of you continue walking around.
*Pang*
“Hm?”
*Pang*
“According to the sign, it’s a shooting gallery. Seems pretty fun. Why don’t we drop by real quick?”
You head over to the shooting gallery.
*Pang pang*
“This is my first time seeing one of these shooting galleries. Maybe I should give it a try?”
You promise to cheer him on.
“I don’t need a cheerleader. Oh well, let yourself get surprised by my skills. ーー Hey Pops! Here’s the money. For two, okay?”
Shin pays.
*Rattle*
“You have to aim at the prices with this gun, right?”
You tell Shin to wait for the explanation.
“How to put in the munition? I don’t need anyone to teach me. I’ll just figure it out by watching those other humans play.”
He loads his gun.
“Oh well. You should get ready as well.”
You hesitate.
“I paid for you as well, so give it a try! Come on, hurry up and grab hold of your gun. ...Well then, guess I’ll go for a test shot first?”
*Pang*
*Thud*
“...Heh! Piece of cake.”
You seem impressed.
“What else did you expect? Time to keep going.”
*Pang*
*Thud*
“Hah~ I won another prize. It isn’t very exciting like this.”
*Pang*
*Thud*
“I landed every hit. ...Heh! This game’s pretty fun! It’s a little too easy for my tastes, but I enjoy getting to wield a gun. I guess I’ll keep playing a bit longer? Ah...But I guess I’m out all out of coins. Anyway, why don’t you give it a try as well?”
*Pang*
“Well, guess I should have figured as much. There’s no way you’d land a hit on your first try.”
You frown.
“What’s with the frown? Just try again!”
*Pang*
“Che...You didn’t even come close. I guess you humans can’t do much better. For me, this sort of thing is child’s play.”
You seem even more upset.
“...No need to get all down over it, is there? It’s just some dumb game, isn’t it?”
You protest.
“...!? You get competitive about the strangest things, don’t you? Guess I have no other choice but to teach you the ropes. Just do as I say, okay? You’ll be able to hit the targets after my teaching.”
*Rustle*
“Come on. You have to hold onto the gun like this. When it’s too far away from your face, you’ll mess up your aim. Come on. Like this.”
*Thud*
“Bring it close to your face. ...Che. Why are you blushing? Are you reacting to my touch, perhaps? Your outfit today provides easy access to your nape, so I’m sure it would be very easy to get a sip of your blood. I bet you wore a yukata with that idea in mind as well? You really have no shame, do you? I mean, if you insist, I wouldn’t mind considering it. Shall I do it...right here, right now?”
You flinch.
“Shouldn’t you fire your shot? People will start wondering what you’re up to.”
*Pang*
“Ahーah. That must be the worst shot of the day. I guess you really have no talent when it comes to this? You missed every single shot.”
You protest.
“What? It’s not my fault! I was as kind as to teach you, but you’re the one who took the situation the wrong way, no?”
You deny it.
“Then how do you explain that terrible last shot? It’s because the situation made you nervous, no? ...Your face was bright red, it was so obvious. Honestly, you really are a handful, not being able to contain yourself even out in public. We’re all out of bullet and change, so how about we head home?”
The two of you walk away.
*TIMESKIP*
“I don’t really care about toys, but the shooting gallery was pretty fun! This wolf plushie is pretty nice, don’t you think?”
You nod weakly.
“Why are you so down? ...To think I went through the trouble to come to this festival with you.”
You explain.
“Che...! You’re worried about that? I never expected much from you in the first place and I only decided to teach you because I felt bad, that’s all. Anyway, I only came here with you because you wouldn’t shut up about it. I can’t believe that now you’re the one who’s not even enjoying it.”
You sigh.
“Haah...Guess I have no other choice. ...Here, for you.”
*Rustle*
“You can have the plushie. I don’t need it after all.”
You thank him.
“No need to thank me. It throws me off when you’re constantly walking around with a frown on your face. Well...I guess I kind of picked on you as well.”
You puff out your cheeks.
“What are you getting upset for!? You’re partially to blame for wearing that sort of get-up!”
You shake your head and deny it.
“Are you sure you didn’t wear a yukata because you wanted me to suck your blood?”
You glare at him.
“First you’re depressed and now you’re acting all upset. What a busy life you have. Honestly, I don’t think I’d ever get tired of watching your reactions.”
*Bang*
You perk up your head.
“What? What’s wrong?”
Fireworks start going off.
*BANG BANG*
“Ahー You can see the fireworks from here.”
Your eyes widen in joy.
“Hah! Look who finally cheered up. Do you like fireworks?”
You nod.
“Heeh, I see. I guess you don’t get to see those every day. I can summon fire, but I have to admit that fireworks are out of my league. ...The combination of the fireworks with your yukata is kinda nice, huh?”
You tilt your head to th side.
“...! N-No...I didn’t say anything, really. I don’t think I deserve your words of gratitude either. We didn’t get to visit any of the stalls you wanted either. Well, I guess that’s your fault for not being able to make up your mind.”
You tell Shin that you had fun.
“Hmー If you had fun, I guess that’s all what matters. ...I don’t ever want to go somewhere with that many people though.”
You tell him that there will be other festivals in the future.
“Haah? Didn’t you hear me just now?”
You beg.
“...Haah. If you insist, I guess we can go just one more time.”
You suggest coming again next year.
“Next year, huh? I guess having a promise for the future isn’t bad. You’re the one who brought it up, so you better keep your end of the promise, okay? ...Say, you’ll wear a yukata again next year as well, right?”
You nod.
“You’ve got yourself a deal then. After all, that’s the point in coming if I can’t get to see you in your yukata? Also, don’t take it off straight away once we get home, okay?”
*Rustle*
“You’ll let me enjoy your yukata get-up, won’t you?  ... Or should I suck your blood right here, while you watch the fireworks? The choice is yours.”
You tell him not to.
“Hehe...You may say, that I can tell from your expression that you can barely wait. ...However, in that case, I’ll wait until we’re home. ...Shall we go then? I promise that I’ll satisfy you in no time.”
ーー THE END ーー

Helloo! So, I'm just getting into this fandom as of like... a day ago. I want to read the light novels, but I keep getting hung up on the fact that they're unfinished. It's just I don't want to invest so much time and energy into somethig that I will ultimately be left unsatisfied with closure-wise, you know? From the research rabbit hole I've found myself in (how I came across this blog to begin with) it seems like the story has a few different arcs. If I were to read up to the last complete arc, would it wrap up in a nice place or would I still be left on a sort of cliff-hanger?
Thank you!
Hello! I would say: maruma is a journey, not a destination. Picture it as a mildly BL Dragon Ball.
Technically, the last available novel ends in cliffhanger. However, if you read the manga, plus all the novels, plus all the extra stories,+ listen to the drama cds, (everything's available online), you might get a pretty good idea of how it's meant to wrap up. The last arc available pretty much foreshadows how it will end, plus some of the extra stories throw in some nice stuff.
If you'd like to consume everything: - I'd start with the anime, which is the worst adaptation of the novels. However the Japanese seiyuus are amazing, and if you listen to the drama cds those lovely voices will be easily recognizable and you'll associate voices and character design to what you will read in the novels.
If you'd like to skip the anime completely: Understandable and you will miss very little, the character adaptation in anime was garbage. (the plot changes completely after episode 40) . However, if you'd like to know why a lot of people in the fandom have a completely weird idea of certain characters' personalities, well... that's because of the anime adaptation (which, as you can imagine, is the most popular format to consume this series).
As for my recommendation... I mean... I love this shit. Watch it all, consume it all, bathe in it, roll in it.
If you wanna skip the anime, my recommendation would be, read all of the manga first to get an overarching idea of the plot/characters. Then, read the novels. along with the extra stories+ drama cds. Here're some links to guide you a bit in terms of drama cds and extra stories Drama cds: https://marumafan.tumblr.com/post/626611889351327744/list-of-drama-cds-canon-rate-and-when-to-listen
Extra stories: https://marumafan.tumblr.com/post/174365388404/hey-how-are-you-doing-i-found-out-about-kkm-some
I'm always here to answer questions, also my DMs are open.
tl;dr: anime-> manga-> novels+extra+dramacds (There's more stuff like musicals(3), radio shows (6 seasons) and games (2?3?), so you can get really into it if you want to... there's a lot of media to get through) If you only read the novels... please read the extra stories too!

Snk fandom on twitter is having some drama because of seiyuu stuff. Jeans's seiyuu said he interprets Mikasa's husband at the end to be Jean and it made some EM shippers very livid so they attacked him.
And then there's Kaji Yuki (Eren's seiyuu) who made a bit of a Ereri comment so now people are wondering if they need to cancel him or not for being too nice to problematic ship.
I'm just here rolling my eyes. Like is this news to people that Japanese seiyuus don't care about things like problematic ships. Might as well cancel all of them. Anyway I hope the two aren't getting harassed too much...

I somehow stumbled upon Fudanshi Bartender no Tashinami earlier. Only found the first chapter so I read it and LOVED IT!
Then I found out they made a drama??
so I just watched that. Why only 2 eps?? I could have watched 100!!
I’m so happy I found it out of nowhere! Had one of the shittiest weeks ever and watching that just put a huge smile on my face.
I’m not good with Japanese actors as I am with seiyuu (I used to watch many dramas/live actions/stage plays in the past but not anymore).
But I still recognized the guy who played Hinata in the stage play ^^ And seiyuu Yamaji Kazuhiro also appeared there! What a handsome ojisan!
I laughed so many times!! The MC fanboying over everything BL related was EPIC! 100% relatable! XD
Highly recommended if you’re a fujoshi/fudanshi! ^__^

Best Underrated Anime Group H Round 2: #H5 vs #H8
#H5: Middle school soft tennis club deals with trauma
#H8: Zombies make really good music
Details and poll under the cut!
Tumblr media
#H5: Stars Align (Hoshiai no Sora)
youtube
Summary:
Constantly outperformed by the girls' club, the boys' soft tennis club faces disbandment due to their poor skills and lack of positive results in matches. In desperate need of members, Toma Shinjou is looking to recruit capable players, but he fails to scout anyone. Enter Maki Katsuragi, a new transfer student who demonstrates great reflexes when he catches a stray cat in his classroom, instantly capturing Toma's attention. With his interest piqued, Toma ambitiously asks Maki to join the boys' team but is quickly rejected, as Maki doesn't wish to join any clubs. Toma refuses to back down and ends up persuading Maki—only under the condition that Toma will pay him for his participation and cover other club expenses.
As Maki joins the team, his incredible form and quick learning allow him to immediately outshine the rest of the team. Although this gives rise to conflict among the boys, Maki challenges and pushes his fellow team members to not only keep up with his seemingly natural talent, but also drive them to devote themselves to the game they once neglected.
Propaganda 1:
Covers a wide variety of issues and gets into the nitty-gritty of the often under-prosecuted instances of child abuse in Japanese society. Multiple LGBT characters, subversions of gender roles, a simple but appealing art style, and some really talented seiyuu to top it all off.
Propaganda 2:
This series is so amazing even though it was cut halfway through (and the trigger warnings, mainly in regard to the environments many of the characters live in) make it difficult to suggest at times. It’s half a sports anime and half a drama, switching between the sports sections and explorations of the lives of the characters involved, the latter of which is the part I really adore. The story discusses the heavily discussed topic of abuse pretty well and also has a good handle on discussions about things like gender (specifically in regard to a canon non-binary character, though there is also a minor character who is a trans man who is also discussed) that I haven’t seen too many other series address, or at least not to the effectiveness of this story. The characters also just have so much charm and compliment each other well, and I love watching them get closer and interact. They’re buddies, and I adore the boys soft tennis team plus Yuu and Mitsue (+ Arashi I guess. He’s from a different school’s team and directly opposed the team, but he very quickly becomes their friend afterwards), as well as all of their dynamics. It’s not a watch for when you’re looking strictly to have a fun time or looking for a complete story, but it’s an amazing story regardless. Also, I love the opening and ending songs so much. I wish this series got its season two so much because it’s so good, I don’t think I did it justice at all.
Trigger Warnings:
Child abuse: Most of the cast is from an abusive household, including mcs.
Domestic abuse: Off-screen/implied, parent of a main character.
Gender/sexuality discrimination: From a parent to a non-binary character + from bullies to a gay character.
Emotional abuse: Some major characters have emotionally abuse parents, this is shown on-screen.
Minor injuries: Blisters, bruises, one scene with plenty of blood but clarified to just be a minor head wound afterwards. etc.
Tumblr media
#H8: Zombieland Saga
youtube
Summary:
Sakura Minamoto dreams of becoming an idol. Unfortunately, reality hits her like a truck, and she dies in a sudden traffic accident. Ten years later, she wakes up in Saga Prefecture, only to find herself a zombie with no memory of her past. While still coming to terms with her demise, she meets a man named Koutarou Tatsumi, who explains that he has resurrected her and six other zombie girls from different eras for the purpose of economically revitalizing Saga by means of an idol group. Assuming the role of an abrasive manager, Koutarou begins scheduling events; the girls go along with it, eventually deciding to name their idol group Franchouchou. An absurdly comedic take on the idol genre, Zombieland Saga tells the story of Franchouchou's heartwarming struggle to save Saga Prefecture while hiding their zombie identities and rediscovering their past lives.
Propaganda:
ITS SO GOOD OHMYGOD. First of all, the music? Amazing. The 3D animation they use for the dancing isn’t the best, but the songs are all bangers. The story is also amazing—it’s just the right blend of silly and serious to really get you to love and care about the characters. And it WILL make you cry. It’s a really cool take on zombies and really uses the full potential of its premise really well. Its dub is also actually good. The acting is great, and the jokes are translated perfectly.
Trigger Warnings: Animal Cruelty or Death, Child Abuse, Gender Identity/Sexuality Discrimination, Graphic Depictions of Cruelty/Violence/Gore

Quite sad about the sudden and unexpected news regarding the cancelation of the 3rd D.R.B.
Honestly? Idk what to think.
I'd like to think it's all been plotted from the start, that's all functional to the development of the events and that nothing bad occurred to the authors, the seiyuu, or anyone involved into the project. But I'm so confused by all the theories and the comments I'm reading on Twitter and below the video recently released AAAAaaarghHH!!
I can't fully catch what's going on, my Japanese knowledge is not so advanced to let me understand the situation to the fullest. I'm so frustrated agdjakslala I'd simply want to know what the motivation of all this fuss is.
Why announce the 3rd D.R.B, genetering hype in the fandom, just to nullify everything 2 months later?? And what's this "OFF the hypnosis microphones" stuff I'm reading about???
This is why I think it's all been plotted from the start. The only logical thing I came up with is the following: an attack on the government.
If you think about the logic behind the 3rd D.R.B ... There's no good strong motivation to start another one. The relationships between the main characters have been (more or less) solved in the last drama tracks, so why would they have to challenge each other again?
That's why I thought something may happen in the background... Like Nemu regaining part of her consciousness and starting to think that something is off (like... What if she allied with her brother, moving from within, for example?), or Ramuda plotting against the Kotonohato proposing Samatoki and Jakurai to team up with him to overturn the government and put an end to this distopic regime, idk... Something of the sort.
We'll be able to see more of Rei's role as the "mastermind" or more of Dice's involvement as the "key factor" leading to Otome...
The implications of this line of thought would be many and very interesting, imo
I really hope this is the case...
And you? What's your opinion about this announcement?

K-project feels so underrated somehow. Is it well known in Japan? Cause they have some of popular seiyuus in it like Mamoru Miyano & Daisuke Ono. Like seriously I never heard of my friend. I feel lucky Animax air this lol. I wonder how did you started to get to know K-project? And when did you started to like Fushimi?
I don't think it's a 'major' anime in Japan or anything but it does have a decent-sized following, I remember a few years ago there was actually a K cosplayer (I think dressed as Munakata?) on some Japanese talk show where they referred to the character as being from 'the popular anime K' and 'popular anime K' was trending for a bit and is occasionally treated as an affectionate nickname by the Japanese fans. It was at least popular enough for two anime seasons, multiple movies and several stage plays, which is pretty good for an original anime series. It's definitely more niche nowadays though, especially since a lot of the continuing content is paywalled and mostly geared towards the super fans.
For me, I got into it right when it aired (yes...I've always been here). I saw a PV for the first season on Tumblr a few months prior to it airing and thought the show looked interesting so I made plans to watch it (I usually watch 4-6 shows every season, that's about the max I can keep up with). Though I actually didn't like it much at first, I found the first several episodes really confusing and couldn't get into it. I did fixate on Fushimi from the start because I liked his character design but I didn't really get into his character 'properly' until after the anime was over. I was curious to see other people's reactions to the way the anime ended and that led me to finding the Fushimi/Yata trading drama CD (with the interview and the Private Hero drama) and that's really the thing that got me into the series, just the bitterness and pain between Yata and Fushimi in Private Hero made me want to know more about them and soon Fushimi was basically my new obsession.
