We’ve been hearing a lot about her and here’s some more. Toni-Ann Singh is a #JamaicanAmerican beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned #MissWorld 2019. She was previously crowned #MissJamaicaWorld 2019. She was born in Morant Bay, #Jamaica. Her family immigrated to the US when she was 9. Her dad is #Indian and her mom is #AfroCaribbean. Toni is a women’s studies and psychology student at Florida State University who aspires to be a doctor. Previously she has worked as president of the #Caribbean students association on campus. Her special talent is that she can sing classical opera. During the talent portion of Miss World, she brought the house down with her rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing”. She’s also considering singing professionally. The most important thing in Toni’s life is her mother “who has facilitated her dream by supporting her in every way possible.” With her win, she’s the 4th Jamaican woman to hold the title, with the last being Lisa Hanna who was crowned Miss World 1993. The others are Carol Joan Crawford and Cindy Breakspear who won the crown in 1962 and 1976. Toni is also the first black woman to win Miss World since Agbani Darego of Nigeria won Miss World 2001. AND her win also made 2019 the first year that black women won the two most prestigious beauty pageant titles in the world, after #ZozibiniTunzi became #SouthAfrica's first ever black woman to have won the Miss Universe title. A proud Jamaican she gave an inspiring message to her country. “To that little girl in St Thomas, Jamaica and all the girls around the world, please believe in yourself. Please know that you are worthy and capable of achieving your dreams. This crown is not mine but yours. It’s for you to truly understand that no matter where you’re from and the cards you’re dealt in life, your dreams are valid. You have a purpose.” “With or without the crown, I would continue to advocate for women. I believe women are the lifeblood of our community. I will continue inspiring them and working with them so they understand just how great their potential is.” 🇯🇲🇮🇳👑 #MixedGirlMonday #mixedgirl https://www.instagram.com/p/B6J6fdTFe24/?igshid=1nmauhkx0e58q

Day 4: #HerStolenTears #BlackHistory #BlackHistoryMonth #Poems ✓ Like ✓ Comment ✓ Share ✓ Contribute to the project www.gofundme.com/her-stolen-tears #blackauthors #poetrycommunity Harlem Shadows BY CLAUDE MCKAY I hear the halting footsteps of a lass In Negro Harlem when the night lets fall Its veil. I see the shapes of girls who pass To bend and barter at desire's call. Ah, little dark girls who in slippered feet Go prowling through the night from street to street! Through the long night until the silver break Of day the little gray feet know no rest; Through the lone night until the last snow-flake Has dropped from heaven upon the earth's white breast, The dusky, half-clad girls of tired feet Are trudging, thinly shod, from street to street. Ah, stern harsh world, that in the wretched way Of poverty, dishonor and disgrace, Has pushed the timid little feet of clay, The sacred brown feet of my fallen race! Ah, heart of me, the weary, weary feet In Harlem wandering from street to street. #authorsofinstagram #jamaicanamerican #poetry #daniellacardoza #writersofinstagram #writer #writerscommunity #blackinstagram #poetrylovers #poetry #poetrycommunity #poetryofinstagram #famouspoets #poemoftheday #dailypoem #deadpoetsociety #jamaicanpoet #poetrysociety #blackmen #writerscommunityofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/daniellacardoza/p/BtebxGBlv4m/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=94yutv6ozwd

"The moment I found my voice. 11 years ago I was crowned Miss Teen Jamaica Florida 2007. I won the sash, crown, and the title, but what I really won was my sense of self. I realized the significance of being a second-generation Jamaican raised in the United States, but conceived in the customs, traditions, and values of home🇯🇲. I was never as confirmed in my cultural identity as I was then, and I carried my ambassadorship with valour, dignity, and honor in being a natural representative of my heritage. Too often folks like me are challenged for our Caribbean National authenticy due to the latitudinal and longitudinal location of our birth. But to that I say, my lineage is my lineage, my people are my people, my culture is my culture and that does not change. I am proud to be of both worlds🇯🇲🇺🇸! In the words of @missjamaicaflorida "from parish to parish, island to island, country to country, we are Jamaican no matter where we go." Fast forward, nothing has changed since 2007, except that now I've found my feet to walk this path and break the barriers for all "next-generation" Jamaicans to find their voices!" . . #Repost @mayalew,Miss Teen Jamaica Florida 2007 . . #crownedwithapurpose #missjamiacaflorida #mjf #pageant #queen #culture #talent #jamaica #beauty #florida #miamidadecounty #browardcounty #palmbeachcounty #diaspora #blackbeautyqueens #pageantry #jamaicanamerican #ettiquette #poise
