meeting Daveed Diggs has always been my dream and to finally see him makes me so happy, he is such a big inspiration to me and i love him so much when i found out he was performing clppng in Raleigh almost half a hour away from where i lived i started to break down crying because thats how much i adore and love him i will never forget this moment thank you clppng and thank you Daveed for this amazing opportunity, you killed last night in Raleigh , i will never forget how much this night changed my life forever.

clipping- Midcity

Before going into this one, it’s going to need some explanation. Clipping is a form of distortion that occurs when an amplifier attempts to produce at a voltage outside of its capacity. Clipping, the band, utilizes this noise, along with found sounds and some aspects of traditional beats and production, to create beats. It’s abrasive, odd, and at times, uncomfortable. It challenges preconceived notions about rap music, without even changing all that much. The hooks are there, the rapping, done by Daveed Diggs, is technically conventional (and fantastic by conventional standards), but the instrumentation, or lack of, can be off-putting. The album can definitely be challenging, but that’s the point.

“It’s clipping bitch” are the first words you hear before you’re plunged into the album. It’s almost a warning in the way it’s delivered, and it’s followed up by what can only be described as a distorted train wreck. The static then gives way to rapid fire flows about what could be called par for the course in terms of rap lyrics- money, drugs and sex, however these subjects are covered with a tone that doesn’t see them as positive, but rather, seems resigned to them as inescapable realities. This really shines through on tracks like “bout.that (ft. Baseck)” where Diggs raps “Human feces by the soil, sleeping bag on the street/ By the road where they fight over French fries/ And dope, where they choke for peso/ Bitch this from that C-section/ From the bloody afterbirth of the greed/ Blood streaks on the back of a hearse.” He then spits “All green everything, gettin’ that guap/All clean everything, swag on lock/Everybody holler at the first thing, fuck it/Real G shit means don’t say nothin’” The juxtaposition of these lyrics demonstrates a cause and effect relationship to the listener. The first part is the cause, talking about the abject poverty that can be found in low income neighborhoods; the second part is the effect, showing the get money at any cost attitude that is spawned by living in these conditions. The next song “get.it (ft. kill rogers & TiVO)” portrays the club life in a similarly negative light with lines like “Who got kids at home?/ Don’t say nothin’/ Take your shirt off, show ‘em something’.” The club song vibe is emphasized by the presence of something resembling a traditional beat on this song, as well as static clapping noises.

These themes are continued with “bullshit (ft. jalene goodwin)” and “mobb2it” before switching tone and subject matter on “killer (ft. kill rogers).” “killer” is lyrically the most graphical song on the album, with lyrics about exactly what the title suggests, murder. It’s made even more disturbing by a repeating choking sound used in the background. The next song “story” tells the story (duh) of Randy the police officer. It first starts off about two lovers in a cab who are then hit and killed by a man driving a jaguar. Randy then enters the scene and can’t handle what he see’s causing him to throw up on himself, and later begin drinking again. The beat and tone of the song then get more aggressive and transition to Randy with his pistol in someone’s face, which he then knocks a few teeth out of. There are more lyrics about Randy being angry and slipping more and more into alcoholism, and then at the end of the song he runs into his sister kissing an unidentified guy to which he reacts by telling her to stop. She rebukes him and he tells her to catch a cab. The final line of the song states “And that’s the last discussion she and Randy ever had” which brings the song full circle, imply that the lovers killed in the accident were actually Randy’s sister and the unidentified guy.

The lyricism and story on Midcity are absolutely fantastic at times, ranging from brash and in-your-face to subtle and despondent; however, they can also be a bit disappointing on songs like “guns.up” with lines like “Disney on these hoes, shouts to all my Mickey Mouses.” With Diggs rhyming, these instances are few and far between, but when the guest rappers (TiVO and kill rogers) are introduced, cheesy and disappointing lines are just about all you can expect. Luckily, only two of the songs on the album have featured rappers. Aside from that, the only negative aspect of the album is the outro. I enjoyed the instrumentals (or lack of) on Midcity, I thought they were interesting, unique, and really fit the image of the album, with that being said, I could barely make it through the outro. It’s a 10 minute track that feels like an hour, and all it does is loop Diggs saying “get money” over and over and over and over again. Sure, it slowly distorts and the restores the loop, but that’s it. It is wholly unbearable, and an unfortunate end to what I considered a great album.

With all of that being said, the thing that will make or break Midcity for just about everyone who listens to it will be the beats. They’re polarizing, but once you get past the abrasiveness of them, the album can be seriously enjoyable.

All I can say is that this new clipping. album CLPPNG is way louder, noiser, and more oriented towards delivering more apparent beats rather than using the static to be the beat. The song Work Work did throw people off and made them question whether or not this album has lost it abrasiveness that gave their last album so much unique character. They are WRONG, this album is LOUD!!! Pre-Order it today! IT'S CLIPPING BITCH!
