Brought to you by the biggest snow storm I've seen in YEARS😭
Tumblr media
Imagine that it's snowing so heavily that you barely see anything outside the window, a perfect snow storm but the insulation in the shitty apartment building is doing nothing to keep you warm, not to mention the one heater you had was barely holding on.
It was...awful. Hopeless even. You felt like you'd freeze to death in this shit hole and nobody would notice, maybe except...Your pushy and weird but strangely charming neighbour, Simon. He sure unnerved you with that blank, empty gaze that flashed with something whenever he looked at you or with his weirdly touchy behavior where whenever he had the chance to grab you by the hips to 'move you' but given the chance that his apartment woukd be even slightly warmer, you'd take your chances.
Imagine going slowly to knock on Simon's door, your warmest blanket wrapped around your shivering form and imagine the look in Si's eyes when he heard your shy, quiet request as if you were scared and ashamed asking if you could please stay for the night with him because the heating is broken in your apartment.
'Bloody fuckin' hell, she wants to kill me' he thought and almost too eagerly let you inside his apartment. It was...something, sure, with its almost spartan furnishing and the low light combined with the chipped plaster and slightly torn wallpaper made the place look unsettling, but at least it was warmer than your own and you felt like you wouldn't freeze to death :(
Imagine Simon dismissing your thank yous and almost growling lowly at your quiet assurances that you'll be out of his hair by morning and that you promise you'll keep everything tidy and not leave any mess behind. Imagine his borderline disgusted look when you asked him if you could sleep on his couch; what do you mean his couch? Oh you silly girl, you're not sleeping on that old, tattered thing! You're sleeping with him in his bed!
Your look of confusion and embarrasment send a pleasurable pulse into his tummy and made his cock stir in his sweats as he rumbled out that he'd never let his dear, sweet neighbour sleep there, plus it is cold enough to freeze his balls off and he wouldn't mind that extra heat♡
Imagine whining quietly with delight when you sunk under the covers in Simon's bed, even if it looked cold and hard, his bed felt like the warmest and softest nest in the world, not to mention the huge human furnace pressed close to you. You could feel the large male pressing close to you, his hard chest and tummy pressed against your back, his strong arms around your middle and when you were almost asleep, you didn't even register thet you nuzzled your nose and cheek against his stubble.
But he sure did♡

Happy Valentine's Day~
(2k words. All fluff. Goro x Valentine)
Goro ascends the rickety elevator with his heart in his throat, feeling a flutter of anticipation settle into the empty place it’s left in his chest. The sensation is unusual. He’s faced down death with less anxiety, been confident in every step in his dance with fate, but now he’s venturing into uncharted territory in a foreign land. Second chances don’t come around often for soldiers like him.
He exits the elevator into a sudden gust of wind. It never gets cold in Night City, but this evening there’s a touch of chill in the air which is exacerbated by being a few hundred meters high in an unfinished building, and he’s glad he took the time to pack the food he’s carrying in an insulated bag. He’s still a few minutes early, and V often loses track of time. If she shows up at all.
As he reflexively scans the area, it turns out his worry on that front is unfounded. He recognizes her in his thermal vision, huddled up against one of the naked support beams, surrounded by a pocket of warmer air. Her interface is running quiet, invisible to passive scans and the network of beacons that Arasaka has placed around the city. They’re flouting rules which at the very least could get them censured, and at worst might put an ocean between them. Saburo’s moods in these recent months have been understandably severe, and it does not take much imagination to wonder how he would react if he knew how attached Goro is to a foreigner– especially one who had borne witness to his death.
V has made a windbreak from scavenged cardboard and tarp, lashed together to the beam with plastic twine. It’s sturdier than he would have expected, shifting only slightly under another gust of wind, which slips over the curved edge and across the top. She’s sitting on one end of an unrolled sleeping mat facing not the industrial park across the street but the light and fury of downtown across the water. For the holiday all of the advertisements scrolling into the sky are a mix of red and pink, saturated with romance and heartbreak alike.
“I know you don’t like it,” she says, not turning to look at him. “But I never get tired of looking at it.”
“It is enough to know that it brings you happiness,” he says, and wants to kick himself. Surely he’s doing this all wrong, blundering into insult and unhappy memories. “Have you been waiting long?”
“Just finished putting this up,” she says, and pats the mat for emphasis. “You’re not the only one who can make plans, you know.”
She finally turns to look up at him, and the laughter dancing in her gray eyes banishes the remnants of his anxiety. He’s helpless to the smile that overtakes him, but there’s no one here to watch them, and so he can see enjoy seeing her answering smile and the frisson it sparks down his spine. When he sits down he has the pleasure of feeling her press in close, her hand on his thigh and her lips soft against his own.
“You looked so relieved,” she says, leaning so her forehead is pressed against his. “Did you think I wouldn’t understand your message?”
“No, I…feared that you might be angry at me for choosing this place. It is dirtier than I remember.” And it is nothing compared to places he would take her, if he could. The food in here is disappointing at its best and a travesty at its worst, but there are a few places high enough above the stink and grime of the streets, where it is possible with the proper decor and lighting to imagine the buildings outside belong to a different city. “And much colder.”
“Used to sneak out like this all the time, when I was younger. Scope out little forgotten spots, hole up for a night with some friends, drinking and getting high and…well–“ She squeezes his leg and he can hear her smile. “You get the idea. We can keep each other warm.”
He hums his agreement. “Also, good food will help.”
“Oh?” V’s interest moves for the first time to the bag by his side. “Is that what you’ve brought?”
“Mm. I hope you are hungry.”
She squeezes his leg again, this time kissing his cheek. “Starving.”
“It is only onigiri,” he tells her, as he opens the bag, carefully pulling out the containers without disturbing the sake. “But it is made correctly, not with sawdust or plastic, like the ones I have eaten here.” And the perfect hearty food for an outing such as this, in the dark and the cold. Their romance had been born here, out of anger and judgment into comfort and understanding.
“Ah–“ Valentine’s hand snakes out before he can stop her, hands occupied with both the container and the lid. She selects one of the umeboshi onigiri, bringing it to her lips and inhaling deeply. “They’re still warm!” Before he can chastise her for her manners she’s already taken a bite, and he forgives her upon seeing the genuine surprise and satisfaction on her face. “This is exactly what I needed.”
By the time they finish eating their fill, and one and a half bottles of sake, Goro finds himself enveloped by V. His back is tucked against her chest, her arms folding around his hips, legs framing his own. They so rarely have an opportunity to be alone and unobserved that the contact itself is another feast. Her hands are never still, but they are gentle, soothing– except for where they stir up warmer feelings, fiddling with the buttons of his shirt and skating over his belt buckle. A much sweeter anticipation than the one that had brought him here.
“You must tell me…” he says, breaking a comfortable silence. Outside their small shelter the wind gusts again, and he wonders– if their lives had aligned differently would he have been part of her youthful escapades? “Since this is my first Valentine’s day here, is this–“
“Making dinner?” V interrupts, and he can feel her breathy laughter. Her tone is indulgent, and he knows by the way his heart leaps at the sound that the sake has done its work. “Taking me to the place we first kissed? I’ve never been much for the holiday, but this is perfect.”
“You do not like it?” he asks, feeling the warmth of her chuckle against the back of his ear. “I thought…because of your name–“ He stops suddenly, realizing with a rush of embarrassment that of course her long relationship with Abernathy would be the backdrop of any memories of such a romantic holiday. Memories that it would be better not to disturb.
“Not particularly,” she says, so gentle he knows she has correctly guessed the trajectory of his thoughts. “I know it’s not the same in Japan, but did you…” She trails off, and he takes some small comfort in the fact he is not the only one on uncertain ground.
“It is different,” he agrees. “The sweets I received…I used to hoard them. On gray days I would sit and eat until I became sick.” He can control his urges now, but he remembers the pile of wrappers, the sickly sweet of sugar and the gluttony which still could never satisfy his hunger. The admission is perhaps inappropriate for this night, but she has a way of loosening his tongue.
V hums thoughtfully, kissing the side of his neck. He can only feel the light pressure, but the gesture still makes him relax. “What about any special sweets? Chocolate?”
“Something so expensive?” he asks, incredulously. “I received some handmade sweets in my youth, but not…” He has the sudden feeling he’s going to say something foolish again, so he shuts his mouth. At his back he feels V pull away, but before he can kick himself she pulls something out from under her discarded jacket, which she slides into his lap before settling back down around him.
“I debated whether to buy you some,” she says, as he picks up the small heart-shaped box. “I mean I wanted to, but I…” She pauses, her voice losing some of her confidence. He thinks he can understand her distress– in Japan it is still women who buy the sweets for Valentine’s day, just as in Night City it is still usually the men who plan the romantic evening. Two separate but uncomfortably gendered expectations for someone who prefers to call herself thief. “Anyway, I stole them instead. Seemed like the right thing to do.”
“Stole them?” he repeats, carefully opening the box to reveal several chocolates nestled in the packaging inside. Even cheap chocolate can be costly, but he can tell by the texture and the smell that these are not cheap, waxy imitations but the real thing. No doubt special ordered for the holiday, making them prohibitively expensive. “From who?”
V chuckles darkly into his shoulder. “Who do you think?”
That means Abernathy, of course, and he wonders if they were a gift to or from her husband. If V had stolen them from anyone else he would have been irritated, but her ex-lover who cast her aside and remains an unfortunate fixture in her professional duties is a different matter. These chocolates are the least she is owed. Thief, indeed.
“Does that mean you like them?” V prompts, the idle twist of her fingers in the fabric of his shirt betraying her anxiety. “I made you something too.”
Before he can answer her she is up on her feet, rummaging through what he assumed had been a discarded box and pulling out a single rose. In his low-light vision it is the same bland blue as everything around them, but with the flick of her fingers the petals bloom into color: deep reds brushed with orange and purples, shedding light on V’s mismatched hands and her small hopeful smile as she drops to a crouch to hand it to him.
“You made this?” he asks softly, brushing his thumb over the outside petals. They’re made of fabric which is stiff enough to keep its shape, yet surprisingly soft despite being able to generate such vibrant light. Under his touch the petals grow brighter, dimming as he releases them, admiring the delicate work that has gone into shaping the stem and the leaves. “It is beautiful.”
V’s smile grows wide, and she covers it with her hand, turning her head away. “I’d have bought you the real thing, but I missed the deadline for orders.”
“It will last much longer,” he says, consumed by the feeling rising in his chest. “Thank you.”
She clears her throat. “You’re welcome.”
He tugs her closer by her collar, pulling her into a gentle, lingering kiss. When they break he finds himself mesmerized by the sight of her face lit softly with the red light of the rose, coloring her nose and cheekbones, making her deep-set eyes glow from the under the shadow of her brow. She leans into his hand when he cups her cheek, eyes darting away from his, mouth curving into a smile.
“Will you be my Valentine?” he asks lowly, restraining laughter as he watches her expression screw up in embarrassment.
“You’re supposed to ask that before the date,” she admonishes, and then takes in a deep breath before leaning in to kiss him again. “But the answer is yes. Always.”

@fallenlondonficswap @thedeafprophet a little gift for Prophet as part of the group gift exchange! Alex's Insomnia. Alex/Fires, general rating, 758 words, insomnia and fluff
As Alex stepped into his apartment, the reflective silver of his mirror rippled, then settled once more into solid glass. His tail was left behind in reflection, his ears returned to human shape, and the almost-warmth of the Cosmogone Sun faded behind him. The persistent sense of bone-deep exhaustion, forcibly held back by a stubborn awakeness, did not. It had, in fact, been tormenting him for days. Nights. An unpleasant period of time. The irony of one who guided and guarded dreamers being unable to sleep was not lost on him.
Maybe it would be easier if it weren't so bloody cold, he thought. Alex sighed, and removed his spectacles, moving through the door and into his bedroom. It was so much harder to fall asleep when it was cold, and winter in the Neath had a special way of leeching the heat from one's bones. Lacre had only begun to appear just last week, and the temperature plummeted with it.
When he entered, it seemed as though his bedroom was somehow multiple degrees colder than the rest of his apartment. Maybe it was the outside walls? Maybe it was the thin pane windows? Or maybe it was the lack of… ugh, no. He was not going to think of that. Instead, he'd light the Firesplace.
Between nightmares, wounds, and the cold, sleep had become a rare luxury. The closest thing he could usually get nowadays was a trip into Parabola to help others get a restful night. In the Is though, he would normally attempt to exhaust himself by planning out further heists, but all of those plans had been finished a night ago. Besides, he had neither mind nor energy to spend on that tonight. So to a different, warmer solution it was.
Alex set his glasses on his nightstand. Searched around for his matches. Searched around for tinder. Found an unanswered invitation to a long-past party (a whole 1899 ago) and figured it would do. He rubbed at an eye idly. His head felt like it was full of wool.
He didn't remember lighting the fire, nor laying down on his rug, but when his attention snapped back to the present, there he was. Sideways, curled up under his cloak, and staring at the fire for long it had burned afterimages onto his retinas.
But what had gotten his attention?
"Alexander, what are you doing?"
Huh, he really was tired if he had managed to miss the enormous Master of coal shoving itself into his room. That was actually rather concerning. Maybe he should set up-
"I repeat, what are you doing?" It leaned down to tower over him, gaze alone radiating more heat than his pitiful fireplace would.
Alex was conscious enough to suppress a whimper, but not conscious enough to not have needed to in the first place. Surely his exhaustion showed? "I'm trying-" He paused to shift upwards on an arm, "to get to sleep. It was nearly working before you broke into my home."
Impressively, he managed to miss exactly what happened next. He could have sworn Fires had scooped him up in a tangled cocoon of cloaks, compared him to a cat, and carried him over to his bed, but he wasn't certain. Regardless, Fire's greatest annoyance found himself laying on top of it. Furthermore, it had apparently unbuttoned its cloak, revealing a bright orange ruff, and the softest chest fur he had ever felt. Alex was immediately enamored, and stuffed his hands as far deep into that fur as was physically possible.
Oh, and it was incredibly warm, and the fur kept him so pleasantly insulated. It reminded him of a freshly baked pastry. Heat soaked into his every muscle and joint, soothing and relaxing him. Fires laughed a quiet chuckle when Alex began to knead its ruff. He was too close to be self conscious. It was incredibly hard to resist when he was melting into sleep.
"Get some rest, little Lyon."
And finally, surrounded by softness and heat, the Silverer managed his first night of sleep that week.
Fires would not stay until morning. It would leave an hour before the workday would begin, and several hours before Alex would awaken, finding himself wrapped in blankets. But it would stay until well past him entering deep sleep, original intentions for its visit long discarded.
They could argue another day.

@fireflys-corner this is making me go insane

Quite a Find
...
Scott was bored.
Yeah sure, all his trinkets were fine. He was slowly making alliances to steal from later, he was finding some interesting news items to maybe trade with said allies, but it wasn't interesting anymore!
So what's something Scott HADN'T collected? Something valuable. Something fun to find.
Knowledge!
There was a guy... Pix? He knew lots of things, he had even given Scott some of the stuff he dug up. SURELY he could teach Scott something cool.
So there Scott was at the door, knocking rhythmically.
"Uh..." the archeologist swung the door open, a little confused. "Can I help you?"
"Do me a favor..." Scott thought for a moment. He always like to be precise with his words. "And show me something cool I can do. You dig right?"
"Excovate, but yeah..." Pix rubbed his eyes. It was early in the morning, but Scott like waking up as soon as the sun rose. "And you want me to teach you to do it or...?"
Scott wrinkled his nose, that sounded like work. "Just give me a pick and shovel and I'll figure it out from there."
Pix gave him what he asked for and brought out a map to look at. There were a few places with x's on it, a couple notes here and there. Pix pointed towards a few mountains.
"The elves weren't great at hiding things," Pix brought out a different map not written on and drew a circle around the mountain range. "I'm sure you'll find something there with ease."
Scott frowned at the map, rolling it up after memorizing the general direction. The two gave their goodbyes and Scott went on his hunt for something to do.
-
If he was Pix, Scott would have mentioned how freezing the mountains were. Just a thought. His colorful cardigan was not a good wind breaker. Also: why on earth would a guy living in a sunny flower field be prepared for the cold.
But inside the old caverns and buried buildings was warmer. If Scott recognized anything, it was elves had GREAT insulation.
But there was one cave. It was obviously intentionally mined out, and it was absolutely frigid. Even more so than the outside.
Crystal clear ice lined the walls, but shards and chunks littered the ground. The cavern was literally frozen in time.
Okay. Scott admitted it. Maybe archeology WAS cool.
The only thing that wasn't blue and icy in the room was a glowing red in the middle of the room, all the ice around it was slippery, like it was melting.
Shards of an opaque gem. Glowing. It was sort of like the gross slimey stuff that was left in the open with the two skeletons.
It was... alluring.
Scott picked it up.
Maybe if Scott had stuck around for a lesson, Pix would have taught him the number one rule of archeology. Don't pick something up if it's still glowing.
Hello there, collector.
Oh wow. Uhm... Scott knealed down and went to gently place it on the ground like it had never been touched.
WAIT WAIT WAIT! Please don't leave me with that idiot elf or his smelly FISH boyfriend! ... please.
That made Scott hesitate. The voice, whatever it was, just sounded so very lonely. Yeah it was raspy and demonic, but he had met a lot of strange things thoughout his ventures. Scott could deal with a demon.
"Are you stuck?" Scott had found a few cursed amulets and dolls in his time, designed to contain people. This wouldn't be that odd.
The voice didn't respond for a moment.
I was already released. There's no helping me now. This is just the last remanends of my conciousness..consciousness... put into an eternal limbo of my own BROTHER'S design.
Scott felt his heart twist a little. That didn't seem like a very good brother.
Maybe if Scott had stuck around for a lesson, he would have learned the second rule of archeology. Don't make assumptions based off only one source.
"Well..." he couldn't just leave the voice there. And he DID come to the mountains to collect things. "Is there anything I can do to help."
Without needing to see the voice, he knew its interest was piqued.
You can't free me... but you could at least transfer my consciousness into another being. At least allowing me my own will once again, not at the whims of what my brother's idea of happiness.
Scott cradled the crystals in his hands. "And what can I get from this?"
A collector? I assure you, I am an expert at collecting. Me and my... friends would go around and spread our wares. Once I'm free, you'll never be bored again.
Oh?
Scott pocketed the crystals. He had found another trinket.

Observation Log 4: 1/14, 9:52 PM
Temp: 25 deg.
Weather: Overcast, heavy wind
Obs: More debris than normal blowing ashore, staying inside.
The cold is seeping into my bones. While the weather on this small corner of the universe has cleared up somewhat, the ripping winds defeating any and all attempts I made at bundling up. My bones stiffen; fingers gone numb in the span of crossing the small gap between my cabin and the lighthouse. Inside it wasn’t much warmer - stone walls offered little for insulation. Did little to restore my sore bones. And again, my numbing hands struggled to get the lamp lit. This has been a miserable week in that regard. The fineries of the equipment up here are still in clean working order, after all - it’s me who continues to rust and corrode.
As I warm my hands by the fire of the lit lamp, I’m left listening to the voices in the air outside, rushing by. Whistling of the wind as it buffets the lighthouse, rushing around and off into the distance. Echoing into the night. Have you ever been in a large crowd of people moving quickly? So many individual voices having their own separate, personal discussions, yet at a certain point of perception it just sort of… dulls. Fades into an indistinct mass of noise.
I honestly kind of enjoy nights like these. It’s a nightmare to be out in, but from inside the energy gets the blood pumping. Keeps me alert, on my toes. You’re not getting any sleep with a parade outside your window, and you’re not nodding off with this wind out there.
Where are they going, all those indistinct little fae? Rushing through this space, so far outside the bounds of normal universal traffic. Are they in danger, perhaps? Just migrating? Going to war, perhaps. Perhaps I’m overthinking this. The wind whistled shrilly, followed by a faint thud, seeming to agree with me.
A rattling from down below jolted me out of my imagination, soon followed by the faint squeaking of metal on wood. Hmm. What could be going on down there? Grabbing my toolbox, I made my way back down to the bottom of the lighthouse, the rattling getting louder all the way.
Yes, the tuft of cold air that greeted me got me up to speed real quick. This wind was putting the lighthouse door through its paces, rattling it relentlessly. The old hinges on this wooden relic were starting to come loose, I see. Fair enough. With a sigh, I set my sore bones to work.
I was never great with my hands, so to speak. Clumsy, blunt, and forward - I think I’ve mentioned this before. My strength was always with people. I just wanted to look after the kids I grew up with. Keep them close, make them smile, and all that. Offer them an ear when they needed it. Offer to punch out the source of their problems, when there was one. Tsuki always said I was obsessed with fixing people’s problems. I remember I pouted. She might’ve been right, but why’d she have to put it that way, huh?
I remember she giggled, and kissed me on the cheek. She told me she never said it was a bad thing.
Goddamnit, I miss her.
We were going to travel the world together. Now look at me, letting these days roll on by on the off chance our paths cross again out here, at the edge of the universe.
We had plans for our future, you know? Before everything fell apart. Before I left on this fruitless quest, if I can even call it that. I can’t bring myself to consider what could’ve been anymore. It’s just a dull ache that will never fade, one among many.
At least I could put those skills to use here, keeping this place functional enough for all the other lost souls unfortunate enough to be out this far.
I managed to liberate a bunch of torn-up books and letters, among other documents earlier. It’s a whole mishmash of the new mess of junk that’s washed up the past day or two, but it’s something. But for now, I should return to my post. Even with the hinges secure, it’s still uncomfortably cold down here.
Tsuki always said I was so comfortably warm. I wish that was still true.

Chestnuts
Hear the tale of how I grew chestnuts this year! I promise it's not too boring! It also includes some good gardening tips if you're interested in learning. If you don't want to read my damned long rambling about random things, they're going to be a different colour so you can skim through.
Tumblr media
Chestnuts!!! I love chestnuts! Though I'm not fond of eating them, I love collecting their seeds because I'm a country boy from the countryside and I didn't start playing video games until I was 11. There wasn't much to do in my small town aside from bullying nature.
I've never considered to grow chestnuts before this year, but in an instant I've made my mind up when I found a single chestnut in my school's courtyard. It had sprouted a tiny little root in the cold January soil. I immediately took my hat off and put it in there for safety.
Tumblr media
I would have gladly left it if I didn't know that they would be mowed down by the gardeners. I simply couldn't stand the thought, many of you might know that I'm like a pet rescue person but for plants.... I went to look for more and more I found!
Tumblr media
I had a few empty pots, so according to my best knowledge I chose a deep, dark brown one to put all the little babies in. Chestnut seedlings are quite sensitive, but I fucked up a bunch of times and they lived, so all you clumsy besties out there shouldn't worry too much!
I put them in sand mixed with garden soil and put a bunch of dry leaves on it as mulch. (Make sure you put leaves that are good for mulch, some leaves such as walnut leaves stunt germination) the pot being dark would make it warmer, thus making them grow quicker.
Tumblr media
I knew some of them would probably not make it, so when they were big enough that I could tell which ones are strong, I put those in their own pots outside. They were put in very nutritious flower soil and I put pinebark mulch on them. It's not as insulating as leaves, but it helps retain moisture better and is less likely to be blown away by wind.
I didn't throw away the ones that I thought wouldn't make it, I kept them because I wanted to give them a chance. They staid in the warm nursery pot.
I found one that hadn't sprouted yet, when I was looking for seeds in January. It didn't grow a root in time, so I threw it in the compost with the definitely dead ones. I was building a raised garden bed with my father, and when we filled it with soil, we found the chestnut seed had sprouted in the compost. I immediately put it in a pot and placed it with the other ones.
At that point an unexpected frost had ravaged the garden and I was devastated, because all of them looked dead... But they lived, literally none of them froze dead!
I never counted them, but I had about 20 of them at the beginning. And now I have 11. That's 55% success! (I'm bad at math don't argue with me if I'm wrong I don't care)
When they first started to grow leaves I took them inside. It is not necessary to do that, but every plant grows quicker in warmth, so I thought it would benefit me. The ones who were the quickest immediately got themselves their own big pots and were left on a windowsill with pine leaves for mulch. They block wind, but not sunlight. (If you pick the right pine) Since it was cold out, they're still nowhere as large as the ones I took indoors, even though they started sprouting leaves weeks in advance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are the ones I took in, they looked like this a week after I put them in their pots. The ones I left outside are not struggling, but they're still this small after two months of growing. Meanwhile the indoor ones grew their nursery pots out. I planted them in larger pots just last week. Only one of them looked to be doing worse off than the rest, but the only problem seemed to be a lack of root growth,(blue pot) which didn't stop it from having the most perfect and symmetrical leaves. I planted it in the big brown pot with one of its siblings because when their roots meet in the soil, they will help each other out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next week, one of my friends will come and pick one of the chestnut children and take it home with. I feel really accomplished, but so saaaad! They grow up so fast, I'm going to cry! Aaah, my little babies....
That's about it for now, let's talk about why chestnut trees are the best!
They are drought resistant, they are one of the best carbon bonders that the average person can plant in their garden and they're outstandingly resistant to fungal infections! They look iconic, I can recognize a chestnut tree just by their branches alone~ They grow tall without much help from humans, since their branches and roots prefer to expand vertically as opposed to just going all over the place. They like sunlight a lot, so they have full canopies that give great shade in the summer. Unfortunately their leaves aren't the best compost, but that minor inconvenience is dwarves by all the amazing things this plant can do.
Their wood is strong and rot resistant, so it can be used for all sorts of crafts.
Bye besties, that's all the knowledge I'll be dropping on you today!
(Get chestnuts, now.)

What happens when you say "DAMN ITS COLD!" through the years. Kid: Tell parent, house magically gets warmer. Teen: Tell parent, parent tells you to put on more clothes, learn how to use the thermostat. College students: Tell to the cosmos, get no answer, bundle up and wait for campus to turn on the heat. Post Graduate Broke Ass Tenant 1: Tell landlord, they tell you tough shit, because they aint turning it on until they legally have to. Proceed to repeat routine of college dorm life and stuff windows with produce plastic bags. It's not pretty but it works hella well. Broke Ass Tenant 2: Wait it out, then tell landlord its too hot, they tell you tough shit, so you are living in desert heat in winter then get blasted by winter when you step outside. Broke Ass Tenant 3: Stare at the thermostat that you do not know how to work and wondering if it actually works or not. It doesn't really work well so you squirrel away the bubble wrap from work and bubble wrap your windows. Works better if you also stuff your windows with plastic produce bags. Also learn that switching your ceiling fan direction is also a thing. Home ownership: .........................getting anxiety about reading how to winterwize a home, so you resort all the things above except buying 1 window kit to "try it out" and doubting that it will work better than your plastic produce bag-bubble wrap trick. Its prettier......questions if the plastic for the windows reusable for next year, because the bubble wrap is. Wonders if a shower curtain will work better. Wonders if you just buy greenhouse plastic. Realise all this thinking means your windows are not insulated well and none of your ceiling fans have a proper switch to change directions! On offshore oil rigs where the temperature goes down and water can freeze causing it to be slippery they need to apply the following coating below which prevents acing of water on any surface!

Job opportunities on oil rigs starting at $34 an hour. You work for different time periods and you get nice long periods of free time as well.
This YouTube video below talks about working on an offshore oil rig what are the hazards and benefits!
Also above coating can be very beneficial to oil rigs that are in colder climates to keep ice from forming on the rig!
Yes, they say this coating may be applied to power lines the keep ice from freezing power lines! But also all kinds of electrical units and equipment to keep ice from forming an any of the equipment or at power stations on their outdoor equipment! So as we explore the Antarctic we need this type of Treatment for clothing to keep ice from forming on clothing when it gets wet!

If you're designing clothing for people working on offshore rigs the clothing needs to keep them warm and it needs to keep them dry!
"What material keeps the cold out?

There are fabrics which keep the skin dry this would be the internal fabric the above would be the external fabric keeping them warm! So yes building composite fabrics that tackle multiple issues in clothing!

The upper lining you want to block as much wind from passing through the fabric but as the fabric allows some cold air to move through it you want to trap it in air pockets in this material traps the air and air pockets helping to keep the person warm!
"That's because wool — and woolen fabric like tweed and flannel — is an excellent insulator. It regulates heat and repels the cold by trapping air in tiny pockets. Rain droplets bead and run off fluffy wool. And if water does soak through, wool can absorb a third of its weight in water before feeling soggy.

Here is an idea of how to keep wintery air from entering and like I said above any of it that does enter can be trapped in air pockets preventing it from reaching the skin keeping you warm!
"Choose thick curtains in heavyweight, tightly woven textiles -- velvet, tapestry, tweed, denim, suede -- to provide a dense barrier against chilly outdoor air. Medium-weight fabrics, such as cotton blends and canvas, offer limited protection for your windows against wintry air.

This morning I performed a sacred rite. One that has possible existed for as long as civilization and been traced back 78 to 100 thousand years. It was a burial. I buried a local neighborhood stray that apparently chose to take its last breaths in my backyard. There’s something quieting about digging a hole in the early sun beneath a maple tree and placing a limp body in the earth. His paws were cold and the fur on them was wet. Was he running in the dewy grass? He didn’t smell yet. His fur was soft, nose cold and damp, ears ghostly pale, and eyes wide. They were still slightly damp, but they did not close when I gently touched them.
I am not sure how far he was gone; his body was soft and flexible, but his anus seemed to be hosting some new visitors. According to google, maggots take up residence as early as 24 hours after death, which is also the time rigor mortis can end. When I lifted him, I was confused, the side he was laying on felt warm, or at least warmer than the rest of him. I think this was just an illusion put on by the insulating effect of a furry body half-shielded from the 48-degree morning.
The soil was brown and damp. New and rich in places, thick and grainy after the tree roots. I got perhaps a foot or more down, all the while questioning how deep a grave even needs to be. I carried him in my bare hands over to the hole, kneeled and gently set him in. It almost seemed a shame for his lovely gray and brown stripes to be covered with mud and earth. But I remember soil is sacred and life giving. He lived and loved this land -yes even my land- so to it he should return.
There are a lot of strays, and neighborhood cats where I live. It’s largely a community of retirees and low-income housing. Many of the elderly here (as anywhere) take the time to offer food and water to the roaming kitties. I don’t blame them, though it can get old seeing so many roving critters. There’s a soft spot in my heart for my 99-year-old neighbor directly across from me who cares for about 3 or 4 including two Garfield look-alikes. Since buying this land and moving here it’s almost felt as if I am only borrowing the land from the cats. The elderly woman who lived -and likely died- in this house wasn’t terribly active outside and so her largely undisturbed grass and trees provided new horizons for them. Once I moved in, I found eyes regularly peaking down from the branches above. Last summer I let the backyard grow wild for many months and apparently this provided prime habitat for fieldmice, and so prime playground for neighborhood cats.
I had often seen this tabby cat sneaking buy, and I shooed him and his mini-me away. Now I felt a little guilt for not allowing some love, even though his kind wreak havoc on the local mice and native birds. I suppose at least he can find his peace here now. I scooped the soft dirt up in my hands and arms and swept it over onto him. Softly, soundlessly he was covered over by living earth. Layer after layer until I returned the roughhewn square of Dicanthelium root mat I cut with my spade. It should rain soon; that will help the dirt settle and the plants recover. Perhaps he will become the ground and feed dandelions.

PSA: Common Weather Myths With Fernadette the Fernwitch
 @fishthegenderwitch
Tumblr media
Resident Human: “An excellent question, and I happen to have an expert on hand to discuss this. Miss Fernadette is an experienced fernwitch who knows a lot about the natural world. Thank you for coming today, Fernadette.” *shakes arm nub*
Fernadette: “No problem!”
Tumblr media
Resident Human: “So... does the blooming of early flowers really mean an extra hot summer is on the horizon?”
Fernadette: *giggles* “No, that’s a myth. Much like a groundhog seeing its shadow meaning six more weeks of winter. There’s no direct correlation between these things. But they are ways that our great, great grandroot ancestors used to explain natural phenomena they didn’t understand. Lets discuss some popular weather myths!”
Tumblr media
Fernadette: “Groundhog day (Feb. 2nd) is also the pagan holiday of Imbolc, which is right in the middle between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. The sun is halfway through its travels on its way toward the Spring Equinox, astronomically speaking. The days are starting to get longer, and we can look forward to things like buds, new flowers, and baby chicks, bunnies, and lambs. But beyond that, there’s no way groundhogs can predict more cold weather. Whether or not the groundhog sees its shadow depends only on whether it happens to be very sunny on February 2nd or not! But it is a fun holiday, isn’t it?”
Tumblr media
Fernadette: “Now, to your question. Flowers blooming early in the season have no causative effect on how hot Summer is going to be. However, there are some roots - no pun intended, tee hee - in the natural world, both old and new, that are reasons why this has become a perpetuated myth. Old reasons include believing early flowers mean a longer growing season, and therefore a longer amount of time things have to heat up for the Summer, as well as a belief that an early end to winter means a more robust and warmer Spring is driving away the cold.”
Tumblr media
Fernadette: “Newer reasons have to do with global warming and climate change. Flowers today in certain parts of the world are blooming almost a month earlier than they were just forty years ago! This is because the Earth has become insulated by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere due to air pollution. Warm sun rays are reflecting back and forth against its surface instead of only once. These chemicals trap heat and light like an incubator effect, so Earth’s temperature has warmed up a lot! Early flowers don’t mean a hot Summer every time, but their early blooming is a symptom of global warming, which results in hotter Summers.”
Tumblr media
Fernadette: “As for getting slapped in the face by one or two more wintry blasts in March, yeah, sometimes that happens. It's just temperatures and humidity levels of Winter and Spring ping-ponging a bit before Spring finally sets in. Personally, I would love to have a big snowstorm in March, considering we haven’t had any snow here all Winter long, for the second Winter in a row. Two other common weather myths, that large acorns and squirrels with extra fluffy tails in Autumn mean a super cold and snowy Winter ahead, were seen last Autumn and yet we had no snow this Winter. So you see, things like that don’t have a direct cause and effect relationship with the weather either.”
Tumblr media
Fernadette: “But don’t worry, the first flowers of Spring, such as crocuses, hyacinths, tulips, and daffodils, are very resilient. They’re used to blooming early, so they’re not as fazed by cold temperatures as later-blooming flowers are. We’ve had our flowers covered with one of those last-minute March wintry blasts you mentioned, and once the snow melted, they were just fine! A fun fact about snow: it actually helps to insulate and keep plants warm when they’re covered by it. Counterintuitive, I know, but it’s true. It keeps them out of the wind, which is much colder than the outside air, and can protect against freezing rain and sleet. What’s bad for plants is being coated by actual ice for too long, or freezing on the inside, because the ice crystals can damage their cells once they’re thawed.”
Resident Human: “Thank you, Fernadette! This was all very informative.”
Fernadette: “You’re very welcome! Happy to help!”

Winterizing Your Home
Old man winter has reared his head as we are now headed for cold weather. After concentrating on hurricanes and rainstorms, we now have the chore of prepping our homes and investment properties from cold weather related problems. Here’s a few suggestions to make the winter a little easier for us all.
First, make sure that the insulation in your attic is sufficient for your area. If it seems lacking in depth or amount, a cheap fix is blown in insulation. This covers well, keeps in the heat and is done very fast. Many companies that do this are listed in the yellow pages or business section of the phone book. Also, the pink stuff (in rolls) is equally effective for your attic. All exterior walls should have insulation, so when you are doing rehabs or adding to a house, make sure you insulate any outer walls.
Tumblr media
Next is caulking. Use a good quality latex and silicone combo caulk such as White Lightning brand or Dap Alex. These are 25 to 40 year caulks with low price and water clean up. Check all areas around the house for a good and proper caulking job. Anywhere that has damaged caulk or is in need of some is one of the most common areas we lose heat and a/c and our bills skyrocket. You will want to caulk around all doors, windows, cornerboards, siding, vents and such. Cracks in siding should be done as well as entry areas on the house such as water spigots and where electrical wires come into the house. Exhaust vents for fans and clothes dryers too. Its also a good idea to get those Styrofoam covers that connect on to your outside water spigots to protect from freezing temps leading to busted water pipes. For just pennies per foot, you can buy foam insulation for your exposed water pipes in your basement or garage (the most common places for busted water pipes from freezing).
Weather stripping around doors and windows can rob you from heat as well. Most hardware stores can sell you rolls of weatherstripping and it’s easily installed by any “do it yourselfer”. As far as this area goes, don’t forget the part under your doors on the threshold. This area is almost always forgotten and usually needs replacing the most. Open all your entrance doors and check the threshold for wear and tear. You’ll be glad you did. For those pesky drafts that get through the window sills and under doorways, you can buy or make what we call a draft snake, These are just round fabrics filled with whatever you want and made to the size of the bottoms of doors and window sill. This keeps the wind from coming in under the doors or sills. Use these anywhere that drafts give you a chill.
A furnace check will insure that all will fire up ok. A clean filter and a newly serviced unit will be far more efficient than one that needs checking. This is also inexpensive and insures a safe, warm season. You may also want to have your airducts cleaned. This removes debris as well as allergens that can be carried throughout the house. In addition, a chimney sweep can come and service your fireplace to make possible some great cozy nights in front of the fire.
Make sure that your garage doors seat well on the ground when closed. You may need to put some rubber stripping on the bottom to seal any open spots. You can also use storm windows and doors to greatly improve keeping the cold outside. Cover your attic vents to keep cold from entering the roof area and if the temp falls below freezing, let your faucets drip. If you have a propane tank for heating or cooking or water heaters, make sure to have it filled.
Last, if you are going to use space heaters, make sure they are in properly vented areas and away from furniture and curtains as fire may be caused. Electric heaters are my recommendation because there are no harmful fumes to deal with. Well, I hope these tips will make your winter better, warmer and less expensive….see you next issue.   Mr. Rehab….Pete Youngs

Hi! I do have a question about how your house is built for the weather😅 I live in a tropical country and the lowest temp for us is 24 degrees celsius. How does your house work through the seasons? Like when its autum and spring? Is it hot? How do you make it cold? Like open the window?😅 And winter?
Thanks in advance!
Our houses are built for cold weather! So we have thick insulation in the roof and the walls, double glazed windows to trap heat in and a central heating system. In the winter, it's warmer inside than outside but you'll still want to put the heating on to stop yourself from freezing.
For summer...well, you can buy a fan and open your windows. That's it. AC is not a thing in homes here, our houses aren't built to accommodate them and they're expensive to buy and run.

Why Does Fixing AC Cost So Much?
Tumblr media
The AC repair cost can vary greatly, based on its specific issue and other key factors. If you take a careful look at all the elements that determine the cost of repairs, you can prepare yourself to face unexpected repairs without being caught by shock when the need arises. Repairs to your AC can be costly, but they don't have to be the main source of expenses. Regular maintenance is a great way to lower repair costs; like changing the air filter frequently and cleaning evaporator coils regularly and sealing air leaks around doors and windows They are all simple and effective fixes that can ensure that your AC is operating more efficiently while simultaneously keeping costs for energy down. Different climates place unique demands on HVAC systems that is why the cost of cooling and heating varies according to region. Repair rates for air conditioning tend to be higher in warmer regions because more powerful equipment may be needed to maintain indoor comfort and also more challenging on the components due to the rising temperatures in the air. In order to determine why your AC isn't operating, the first step for a professional is to conduct an inspection. A typical inspection costs between $100-250, with the components comprising 50% or more of the cost. A thorough examination may reveal problems such as low battery levels in a thermostat, an electronic circuit breaker which is in need of reset or blown fuse which require replacement. Other causes that can increase the repair costs for an AC include frozen Evaporator coils (which can reduce cooling power) and clogged condensate drain lines that cause water leakage, the growth of mold and mildew, or broken temperature sensors, causing the system to switch on and off randomly or not operate at all. Age can play a pivotal role in determining how much is required to fix an air conditioner, with many lasting 10-15 years before becoming less efficient or completely unusable. In that case, it might be more economical to invest in a brand-new system rather than continuing paying high repair charges. Like any other machine, air conditioners contain numerous moving parts that will eventually wear out and will require repairs. You can help prolong its life by not overloading it by running appliances like your dryer and dishwasher during the daytime when temperatures aren't as extreme outside. Insulate https://rpsc.energy.gov/tech-solutions/hvac and ensure that you keep air ducts clear to make the most of your investment in cooling technology.

5 Reasons Why You Need Insulation in Your Bathroom Walls
So, you’re planning to renovate your bathroom. You’ve hired an incredible interior designer and bought the most exclusive bathroom materials to give it a luxury vibe. But have you considered insulating your bathroom wall?
If your answer is no, it’s high time you consider that. While some people consider it as an option, you should consider it as a necessity for the well-being of you and your family.
If you’re wondering why, this article will show you five reasons why insulation is a must for your bathroom walls.
5 Reasons Why You Need Insulation in Your Bathroom Walls
If you’re concerned about the health and comfort of your family, you must opt for bathroom insulation. There are tons of articles out there on how to insulate your bathroom and why you should go for it. Here are our 5 favourite picks on why you need it:
Keeping the room temperature comfortable
Bathrooms tend to be warmer and more humid than other rooms in the house. If you don’t use insulation on the wall this can spread to your other rooms - not pleasant at all!
The right insulation material can help keep the moist, warm air from traveling to other areas of the room.
Besides, if you live in a colder area, insulation can keep your bathroom warm and more comfortable to use.
Reducing energy costs
With the increasing energy bills in recent years, it has become crucial to make moderate use of home appliances, especially the heating and cooling systems.
Insulating your bathroom wall can help keep the heat in, meaning that your HVAC systems won’t have to work hard to maintain the proper temperature. Doing so will eventually reduce your energy bills and save you a lot more money in the long term.
Preventing mold and mildew
Exposure to mold and mildew can cause several health issues, especially for people who are allergic to mold or have asthma.
Due to the warm and moist air, the bathroom is the prime place for mold to grow. Proper insulation can create a barrier between the moist, warm air in the bathroom and the cool and dry air outside the wall, which prevents molds and mildew from growing.
Being a health-conscious person, the last thing you want is mold in your bathroom. So, insulation is the first thing you should opt for while remodelling your bathroom .
Increasing comfort
Nothing is more discomforting than stepping into a bathroom that’s either too warm and humid or super cold to use. Besides a humid bathroom tends to stink after a certain time.
Since insulation can help keep the air dry and at a comforting temperature, it becomes easier for everyone to use the bathroom.
Reducing noise
Let’s be honest, bathroom sounds are best kept inside the bathroom! It can sometimes get noisy in there, and that may create awkwardness, especially if you have guests in the house.
Insulations can come as a rescuer here. By adding insulation to the wall, you can significantly reduce the amount of sounds that escape, avoiding a very embarrassing encounter.
How to Tell If Your Bathroom Walls Are Insulated
If you’re new in this house, you may not know if the walls in your bathroom are well insulated or not. However, you can easily find it by looking into some factors. A dead giveaway is that if it’s colder than the other rooms, it’s not well insulated.
You can also look for the following signs to figure out if you need to go for insulation.
Check the walls and ceiling for any gaps or cracks
If there are any gaps or faults in the ceiling or walls, cold air from outside will make its way into the bathroom, making it more uncomfortable to use.
Make sure you check both the walls and ceilings for any faults, and if you feel any breeze consider it’s poorly insulated.
Feel around the doors and windows for any drafts
If the bathroom door and windows have any draft or gap, it will let the cold air from outside, especially during the winter season. Carefully check around the windows and doors to look for any drafts.
Check the floor around the edges of the room
Another way to find if your bathroom is well insulated is to check if you sense a draft sneaking in from the edge of the floor. If yes, consider it a clear indicator that your bathroom lacks proper insulation.
Once you notice these signs, there are a few things you can do to improve the insulation:
Take some expanding foam and try to fill the gaps.
Install weather stripping around the doors and windows.
While the experts are working on insulation, make sure they install it around the edges of the room.
Conclusion
Whether you’re in a new home or an old one, insulation is a must for the bathroom. While a proper insulation can ensure comfort, peace, and safety for you and your family, a poorly insulated bathroom can be a warehouse of germs and disease. Nothing is more uncomfortable than coming home and entering a wet and humid bathroom.
While opting for insulation, it’s crucial to find the right insulation contractors. The right contractor will know which material to use and how much. They will also provide you with suggestions on proper maintenance after the insulation is done.
Also, make sure to check the insulation regularly and keep the surrounding area clean and dry to prevent molds on the insulation.
