@a-more-delicious-happiness: Or maybe a potions class in the next year after Fear Itself…I wonder if Merula would feel herself wanting Lily’s attention and but hating it at the same time…catching herself when her snark borders on flirty (not that she’d ever admit it…yet)
Here’s a more light-hearted one this time! (Or as light-hearted as Year Four Merula can be.) It’s not exactly flirty, but it’s still fun.

Corrective Lenses (Merula)
Flores and Khanna were talking in Potions again. True, they were always talking in Potions, but after a full summer of peace and quiet, Merula had forgotten how annoying they were.
“Should we set out cushions?” Khanna was saying as she took her usual seat to the right of Flores. “If I start sleepwalking in the middle of the night, I’m going to fall all the way to the bottom of the tower. I know it.”

HOLY SHIT HOW DID I MISS THIS. @therodrigator6 you are incredible.

Dear London, merry christmas! (or in my case, felíz día de reyes :))
I have this personal tradition, wherein I like to do something special, for very special stories. These days I find it very hard to find a story that really grips and makes me want more. The Mad Witch is certainly that rare kind of story. All the effort you put into it is translated into one of the nicest reading experiences, and hopefully, this fanmade cover can show just how appreciated your work is <3
Cannot wait for more of Lilianna Flores!

I’ve finished the very rough draft of Chapter 34, and in summary, it is basically 10k words about what happens when multiple people go over 24 hours without sleep while experiencing one of the worst nights of their lives.
It was an absolute blast to write.
It is going to be hell to edit.

@dumpsterhipster
I finally resumed the one shots (again). This one has been sitting in my drafts forever. And, hey! It’s actually close to my 1k-word limit for once! (Mostly because your neighborhood environmental scientist got a little carried away with the topic and had to cut it short before she had more than her weekly allotment of existential crises.)
Anyway, here’s part one of two. Enjoy!

In Hot Water - Part 1 (Lily)
“I don’t get it.”
“What’s not to get?”
“I don’t understand what I’m looking at.”
Tanner grinned, thoroughly pleased with my confusion. He had been casting smug glances in my direction since he had picked me up at the airport the night before. Clearly, my reaction hadn’t disappointed.
“Tell me what you see,” he said.

WIP Wednesday
I want to slowly begin to dish out bonus/filler content again until I have enough time to work on the next chapter, and it’s been a while since I’ve done one of these, so let’s have some fun. I posted the beginning of this unfinished fic for a WIP Wednesday a while back. Here’s another snippet.
Mason stared at her in horror. Under his breath, he hissed, “What have you done?”
“Ms. Leigh,” a voice squeaked sharply.
Sam suppressed a grimace. She looked down by her hip. “Yes, Professor Flitwick?” she asked innocently.
Flitwick’s brow creased. “Sam, it is barely October. Tread your next steps lightly.” He glanced over at the fountain, where a drenched Bletchley lay groaning. Two other Slytherins were attempting to fish him out. “Is he conscious? Yes, good. Please get Mr. Bletchley up and to the Hospital Wing. Gently, please! Gently! I don’t envy his headache.”
“Professor, he—”
Flitwick cut her off. “Your form was excellent, Ms. Leigh. But you know the rules: dueling is prohibited outside of sanctioned club events. I’m afraid that’ll be twenty points from Ravenclaw and six weekends of detentions.”
“Six—!”
“Repeat offenses, Sam.”
Robin jumped in. “Professor, you can’t blame Sam. She was just—”
“I saw what happened,” Flitwick said, not unkindly. “Which is why I will be taking thirty points from Slytherin”—there was a groan from the students hauling Bletchley out of the fountain—“and granting Mr. Bletchley one Saturday detention. My apologies, Mr. Feare.”
Robin stepped back. “Yeah, no, that’s fair.”
“One?” Sam exclaimed.
Flitwick sighed, “Sam…”
“You think he doesn’t know anything about repeat offenses?”
“Ms. Leigh, please.”
“But six?”
“I could make it eight. I advise you not to push your luck.” He beckoned her to follow him inside. Reluctantly, she trudged after. Robin mouthed, I’m sorry, as she passed. Mason didn’t look at her.
As they climbed the many staircases, she didn’t have to ask where they were going; they’d done this drill for over five years now. She silently fumed all the way to the seventh floor, which was a mistake. By the time she dropped into the chair before Flitwick’s desk, her eyes had begun to burn. While he clambered on top of a stack of books, she blinked furiously at the floor.
“Sam,” he sighed again.
“It’s not fair,” she grumbled. “Someone else plays the bully, and I still get punished.”
“Your intentions were noble, though your actions were misguided. I admire you for defending your friend, but responding with violence should not have been the answer. We have rules in place for a reason. It only takes one wrong impact to crack a person's head open—and I’ve seen it happen. You could have killed that boy. Then how would you have felt?”
“I wasn’t trying to kill him.”
“I know. That’s my point. Which is why a peaceful approach would have been better—”
“Like what?” she scoffed. “‘Hey, don’t shout slurs at my friend. That’s not nice’?”
“Well, maybe not exactly—”
“I won’t apologize to Bletchley either, so don’t try to make me.”
“I wasn’t going to, but you must understand—”
“I don’t. I don’t understand. I’m not allowed to duel him, but I’m allowed to hit bludgers at his head?”
“In a sanctioned match with Madam Pomfrey on standby,” Flitwick stressed. “You know that’s not—”
“Still, six weekends isn’t fair. This is my first offense.”
“Your first offense this year, Sam. We’ve been working on this. Violence cannot be your first resort.”
She crossed her arms, and she was embarrassed when her voice came out in a whine. “I wanted this year to be better.”
His expression softened. “It already is,” he said with his characteristic squeak. “It took you a whole month before you ended up in my office! That’s a significant improvement.”
“It’s not funny,” she bemoaned. “I didn’t want to end up here at all.”
“Improvement takes time—and you have improved, more than you can see. I’m not mad about what happened. I’m not even disappointed. I simply want you to build on that improvement—to get in the habit of thought before action. A better understanding of consequences will go a long way towards making better choices.”
Sam rubbed her hands on her thighs, blinking at the rug again. “Please don’t write to Kat,” she said quietly.
“Oh, I don’t think the consequences need to be that severe. A few weekends maintaining the Care of Magical Creatures paddock should be punishment enough. I hear Hagrid may need assistance with a unicorn recovering from colic.” Her head shot up, prompting him to add, “Try not to look too excited when you leave my office, please. Your detentions are meant to keep you out of trouble.”
“A unicorn?” she asked hopefully.
“Report to Hagrid Saturday morning. He will tell you what you might need to do.”
“Thank you.” She kept rubbing her hands against her legs. She grabbed her knees to stop the anxious fidgeting. “Did you really mean it? Was my form good?”
He chuckled. “It was near perfect. I won’t ask who has been teaching you. Lilianna has never been good at keeping out of trouble either. Next time might I recommend a harmless Jelly-Legs Jinx or Tickling Charm? Or perhaps a Bat-Bogey Hex—I hear it’s back in style.”
“How many detentions for those?”
“None, if they’re in self-defense. Otherwise, hypothetically, one or two.”
“Good to know.”

Happy New Years (in three hours). Guess who has Covid and has spent the last few hours playing with picrew (this one, specifically) and finishing a Harry Potter marathon. Here’s some familiar faces. They just might make an appearance soon.

Of the OCs, Mason’s the least accurate, and Sam and Robin are the most accurate. Actually a decent amount of hairstyle options in this one! (Though I couldn’t find a look that suited Penny.)
Counting down the hours till midnight.
