hey dils!! was listening to sunshine riptide and thought of u so i wanted to say i hope ur taking care and also ask if u have any favorite fob videos/interviews?? lately i have been obsessed w the promo video patrick did for the honda civic tour where he drove around LA and said the only reason they got the tour was because he already drove a civic ahsjdbd

first of all it is SO flattering that listening to sunshine riptide made you think of me 🥺

secondly i was molded out of clay to answer this question, 100% i have a lot that i think about like way too often

the one where petes giving a tour of his parents house where he lived at the time and was showing off his stuff and was particularly very excited about the fact that his band was turned into action figures and then half way through andy shows up and is like "were best friends forever!" and petes like "yeah andy comes over for sleepovers a lot, we hang out in my basement and make zines and stuff" and then at the end he gets all excited cuz he hears his moms car pull up and he goes out and shes coming out of the car and then patrick gets out of the car carrying groceries and petes like "here mom me and patrick can put the groceries away you finish the interview" and shes like "no- pete i just got home from work im a mess" and hes like "what? no! no mom you look great, you can finish the interview well take in the groceries" and then she did and the camera crew came back to the two of them messing around and putting groceries away.

"pete wentz is honestly the only way to describe pete wentz. hes the most complicated guy i know." [cut to] "if anyone can make a strike without touching the lane i will pay you $300" *throws bowling balls straight into the air* *runs down the lane*

ok but in all seriousness i love that interview not only for that iconic moment but because later the footage is like blaring i dont care and pete goes and grabs a stuffed giraffe out of the prize thingie and hes like "what do you mean :)? we bought this with our tickets!!" and the editors are very much trying to make it a bad boy rebel without a cause moment except if you looked the woman behind the counter had a smile on her face and was laughing and then afterwards he gave it back and said "we werent really gonna steal it" but it really seemed like she knew that already

and then at a different point a couple fans showed up and they were all shy and excited to meet him and he was just like "hey are you guys coming to the show later" and they were like "yeah" and he was like "cool! thanks for coming out :) do you want a picture?" and they took a picture and it seemed like he was still kinda excited that people were excited to meet him. marcus (their bodyguard) was like trailing behind him and smiling and laughing throughout most of these antics and i just think thats sweet.

later in this same interview once again as they were on the ride back to their hotel or whatever theyd brought back a fake moustache and patrick put it on and did a bunch of dumb impressions.

patrick: if i wasnt doing music i think id be like a music critic or music journalist or something

andy:...i thought you said youd work at walmart

theres this one srar era interview thats just joe and patrick riffing for like 15 minutes. like it looks like they just straight up forgot the interviewer was there its so funny theyre such good friends.

this one joe and pete interview where i dont even really remember what they were talking about but theres a moment where joes talking about music with this intense passion and pete just kinda looks at him with this level of brotherly pride that keeps me going

this one andy and pete interview where 1) there were waterfowl chillin behind them which was deeply fascinating to andy and 2) they took a moment to swivel their chairs and hug each other bc theyre besties

band superlatives, specifically the moment where theyre all separately like "technically marcus isnt in the band but like. its marcus." bc that was sweet, unofficial 5th member of fob. and also "whos the most talented" "patrick. patrick. its patrick, hands down." "hm. petes like a really good soccer player" like thats a moment out of a fucking sitcom

halloween asmr with pete wentz. the man cant act but god can he commit to a bit.

there was this like live text chat that they all were in with fans on some radio station website. there were a lot of very fun moments, including joe saying "this is very current technology." as a comment on how very dated the live chat was and andy being like "can we set an icon i wanna change mine to an XVX" and pete and joe being like "oh are you vegan straight edge? we had no idea." and then pete was like "actually i wanna change my icon to andy hurley" and andy was like "no pete im not gonna send you a picture of me" and he was like :( and then a minute later he changed it to andy and he was like, and i swear this is almost a direct quote "BOOM! i love my life haha" and andy was like "goddammit" like i have no idea where to find this but it was so good.

theres this one "this or that" interview with joe and andy wherein the interviewer was a woman and like she seemed pretty at ease around them and got to the last question and imo seemed kinda uncomfortable and kind of established (in a way that seemed like she didnt usually do that) that it was a gross question, which was "would you have sex with a super hot celebrity but shes just died" and both of them were like "hey. what the fuck. absolutely not." and shes like "oh thats a first" and they are both like "do people say yes to that????????" and shes like "youre literally the first people to say no haha" in a way that made it seem that she did not find it funny and i just find that to be an interesting moment and i hope shes doing well and has a better producer now.

theres this one interview w andy on a hardcore podcast where the interviewer asks andy "do you every wish fall out boy were more political?" and he said (paraphrasing) "fall out boy is political, in its own way. we may not be as explicit with our politics as my other stuff, but kids find fall out boy, and through me, with all my other bands, or through joe, since he does a lot of metal, find heavier stuff, and are introduced to this stuff and to being vegan straight edge or anarchist or just more radical politics, and i dont think that just because we arent being super political in our music we arent a political band" which was really something to me bc i had just been thinking about that as a concept i call "gateway punk"

theres this one interview i recently found of a very small chicago music news outlet where a young lady interviewed pete and asked far more interesting questions than any other interviewer id ever seen and one such question was how he felt about the legalization of marijuana in illinois and he said that it was cool that it was legal but everyone locked up for it right now should be released and i like that he got to be political

theres a moment on the badass jew podcast episode joe was on where the interviewer whomst i do not recall was espousing some veiled antiblack sentiments wrt some antisemitic comments some famous black people had made and joe just completely rebutted it immediately and pointed out that black people not only are not a monolith bht are at a greater disadvantage

and also he made a joke that i could never make and cant fully get bc im not jewish but it was very funny and i love hearing people make jokes that arent for me.

this one interview before patrick had kids where he was saying how everyone kept asking him and elisa when theyd have kids and he was like "you cant just make that happen yknow? how do you just do that?" and pete immediately grinned and leaned over and mock whispered "you have sex" and patrick punched the air and was like "i hate you so much"

that one interview about abap where pete was like "we actually got the guy who did the whistles on patience by guns n roses to do it on this" and then he looks over at patrick and patrick shakes his head and petes like "you couldnt let me have this?" and he was like "i was gonna but then you looked at me and i just couldnt."

Hello! I really love your art and I was wondering if you have any advice for a beginner artist trying to make there own style?

fiofniwoe oh god i am pretty much the least qualified person you could’ve asked this question, since i consider myself pretty much a beginner and i do NOT have a consistent style whatsoever, but ill try?? to give my own experience?? i guess??

from my own experience, art is one of those things where you learn the rules of... whatever it is youre doing to bend or break them. for example!! if youre drawing people, its really important to understand at least the basic rules of human anatomy. even if your knowledge isnt GREAT, having that bit of knowledge can help! instead of slapping down lines and hoping it looks good, you can push or pull those anatomy rules a bit more confidently without it being a strain on the eyes. (my favorite example of this has to be this lovely art.) when i first started i tried to jump straight into stylized art and it was usually a mess, or my art was constrained to one position and lacked variety. it really wasnt until i brushed up on the basics that i felt more confident in what the fuck i was doing and could have more freedom to my drawing capabilities. so if youre just starting, i would personally focus more time on a simpler style to practice those basics. then when youre more comfy, move onto building your style in a certain direction.

also!! art styles take time to build!! im sure if you scroll back far enough in any artist’s catalogue of stuff they’ve posted, youll notice that immediately. you can see the transition, but its a slow thing. sometimes it takes months, other times years. but it’s really not an overnight thing. maybe one day you find this really cool lighting technique you never considered, and then you realized that this brush youve never used is a thing... and then! loh and behold! you could shade like that?? oh and you can exaggerate those portions of the face?? who knew! and then an artist looks back and oh shit!! their art HAS changed! so if youre just starting art, dont stress yourself so much about trying to find your “unique” style immediately. it’ll come with time!! just keep on pushing and pulling the rules and adding new things that look nice, removing old ones that aren’t so nice. you’ll get there.

if you feel like youve got your basics at least somewhat down and youre only stagnant in your style, then, well, look at art that you like. what draws you to it? is it the shape? the colors? the lighting?? the medium?? or is it just that the guy drew the eyes really cutely and you want to try something like that? or maybe someone draws birds that are so huggable and you want to try it yourself?? try incorporating those little details or techniques of what you like into your art, and see what clicks, what doesn’t.

also!! watch!!! timelapses of art!!! art tutorials are informative but if youre like me who cant keep attention for shit, watch and pay close attention to the speed lapses where people talk about funny stories or play cool music in the background and see what those artists do when its not the expectation to educate. how do they build the structure for faces?? how do they blend colors?? do they do multiple sketches?? how DO they do their sketches?? what kind of blending and painting techniques do they use?? what kind of shortcuts do they do that you didn’t notice previously?? look past your preferred medium and find artists from all kinds of crafts and youll see how much you can learn. it’s really helpful to just watch them do their shit, especially because they show stuff they do without realizing how it might be helpful. for example, i watch neytirix and i realize they do lighting above the lineart layer (i think with some kind of airbrush tool) to give it a more soft glowy effect which!!! i would not!!! have otherwise thought about!!! even though its really fucking obvious in retrospect!!! when you binge a lot of artists’ videos repeatedly their patterns become easier to point out and you can learn a lot.

anyway, stare at cool art! surround yourself with artists who are extremely talented! theres so much you pick up without realizing it! doodle well and often!! maybe youll stumble across something you like to do. and last but not least, find your medium and pick up your tools and fuck around with them!! maybe youll find something cool for yourself, who knows?? its a process and your style will evolve and grow with time. just keep on trying new things out, testing what you like and don’t like, and keep on growing. an art style is only unique (imo) because it is a conglomeration of all that youve learned from countless different people.

Hiii happy 4th hypmic anniversary, I know it's been like 3 days since the actual anniversary but *shrugs* anyways I wanted to answer the questions from this post to celebrate!! (This is going to be a long post lol, this just brings a ramble instinct in me)

1. How and when did you get into HyplMic?

I got into hypmic during the end of September/ start of October of last year, it feels like a lot of time and very little at the same time lol... so many people in the fandom have liked this for super long!! I got into it bc of someone I followed on twitter, they would talk about it sometimes and I was getting a bit sick of the music I listened too so I thought "why not expand my music taste?" Little that I know It was going to become the only thing I listened too lol. I also saw this like "a hypmic characther once said" video and I thought it was soooo funny I just had to get into it. I'm honestly surprised hypmic started in 2017 bc I was going through a god awful musical phase and knowing I could have liked it earlier in life amuses me (tho back then I thought anime was silly so it wouldn'thave happened either).

2. First impressions of the characters? Who stuck out the most?

(Another long one soz) I'm going to do most of them btw.

Buster bros: ichiro was the 1st chara I knew before I got into it, for a bit I had him mixed up with jyushi tho lmao. Tbh I didnt have a very strong opinion on him, I wasn't super into BB at the start 😅 same with jiro, I liked him the most, thought he was really cute. At the start I disliked saburo a bit lol, like he was just soooo mean and I didn't like that, also I wasnt a huge fan of new star at the start so I didnt like him bc of that either.

MTC: I had to fight a lot to openly like mtc, I felt a bit bad liking them at the start bc they're all like criminals and stuff lol. I have to be honest I think that at the start I didnt think about them like at all... the strongest impression here was Rio, he was my favorite also I thought jyuto was hilarious bc of the start of bayside smoking blues, I really liked his voice too.

Fling posse: ok so the moment I saw Ramuda I was like "this guy is evil as balls isnt he?" I was pretty right lol, I thought he was a child like saburo at the start bc hes so small, man fooled me there. I liked dice the most at the start, my 1st fanart is of him lol. I didnt have very strong opinions on Gentaro, I was surprised to find out his VA also voiced yamaguchi since I was a haikyuu fan if anything.

Matenro: Lol matenro was my favorite (still is), idk what was it but I saw all of them and I was like: great :D I dont remeber specific impressions tho.... It was almost like love at first sight lol. I remeber I really liked the fact that both hifumi and doppo had tips, I thought it was super cool.

BAT: ok so I also knew who kuuko was before I got into hypmic my actual actual 1st fanart was of him (I did it before I even knew what hypmic was like at all). I really liked him, I remember listening to gyara bam and being like "this guy rules so much", I really liked jyushi, as mentioned before I had him mixed with ichiro (they look nothing a like I dont even know how) I was super shocked to find out he was also a teen lol I was pretty happy. Not gonna lie I had no idea who hitoya was at the start (rip) I knew kuuko I knew jyushi but I didnt know him, I dont remeber being very big on him till like the dramas and getting more into hypmic bc before nothing nada.

Dotsuhon: lol I slept on dotsuhon for the looongest time, I literally only liked sasara, rosho and rei were just really there for me. Sasara was my favorite bc I loved his voice and tragic transitor gace me unrivaled latino vibes so he felt very close to me in a sense. I thought rei was a scumbag the moment I laid eyes on him.

3. Who was the first character you liked?

My 1st favorites before I found out about bat and dotsuhon where jiro and hifumi!! I really liked their voices and like over all attitude and stuff.

4. Which was the first Division you liked?

My favorite was matenro, they were just so cute and I liked how they were pretty chill and just had fun most of the time. Like how they tried looking all edgy and intimidating but they were all nice guys lol.

5. How have your favorites changed?

Not much lol my favorite is still hifumi tho know I have jyushi and Otome if were ranking on like top 3. I love all the charas now tho!!! Lol these are just my bigger ones. Division wise now my favorite is mtc, followed by bat I'm still a matenro stan tho!! All divisions have done some big growing on me so I love all of them anyways.

6. What was the first song you listened to?

The 1st song I listened to was battle anthem, I was super convinced it was the 1st hypmic song so I was surprised to hear it was division rap battle lol.

7. What's your favorite solo song?

Ghhhh this is so hard to choose... I actually like basically every single hypmic song.... if we're talking only 1t set that's easier to choose. Um that would be sensenfukoku, drops and champagne gold, I like all the mtc ones so I cant choose. Second set every single one is amazing so I cant choose either, tho at the start I disliked most of them somehow...

8. What's your favorite group song?

Ok at 1st i thought it was like an all division song but I just read it and it's just group song in general.... I love all of them but one of my biggest comfort songs is papillion so I'll say papillion. If were talking all stars songs that's easier tho: in no particular order its hoodstar (just heard the + ver and it slapped), survival of the illest+, glory or dust and hang out.

9. Which songs do you think are slept on?

Mmmmm I personally have no idea which songs people like more in general but I have seen a bunch of "my favorite hypmic moments" videos so I'll base it on that. I'll personally say any mtc song lol, in those videos theres always a surprising lack of mtc so yeah.

10. Do your favorite songs come from your favorite Division?

Yes, tho it's really no problem bc I like all songs😅

11. Objectively, who do you think is the best rapper?

I had never heard a lot of rapping till hypmic so I have no idea what good rapping is lol... I personally thinks everyone does a good job, I guess someone else can school me on that.

12. Which composers for HypMic do you listen to?

None... I honestly dont like know who composes which song.... I know very little about music and I dont look into it so I cant answer this one either.

13. If you had to get someone into HypMic with one song what would it be?

Oh :0 well I'm not very sure but if anything I think the way to go would be an all stars song bc you can get the feel of each division pretty good, then if they like that introduce them to other stuff. Of course this all depends on the person lol... my brother really likes strong songs so to him battle anthem was a good hook up... I quite personally would go for survival of the illest bc it has a good feel of the divisions and it's very silly which is a series staple.

14. Do you play ARB? Drop your friend code for people reading!

Nooooo I dont 🤧😢 I really want to but I dont think I would have space on my phone, besides idk how to download it, if you have to pay for it I dont have money and if it's only in japanese I'm learning at snails speed so I wouldnt understand it *cries a little* I have seen certain events tho, I find it funny.

15. What events are you hoping to see? What character combos do you hope will show up together?

Mmmm idk I have a post about but I'll love to see a sasara jakurai interaction, I'm pretty sure one has already happened but I want this funny man to interact with jakurai more. Some people mentioned that they would like to see more interactions between kuuko and samatoki and I agree, wheres that side of the mad comic dialogue line up? I'll also like to see hitoya and samatoki bc they're both into vintage stuff ish, like fashion wise so I think it would be interesting to see. Last I want a jyushi/jiro interaction idk of there's any but there needs to be I need them to interact!!! Or maybe saburo jyushi that would also be interesting.

16. Are you into any ships?

Yes!!! I'm a little shy talking about ships not going to lie so I don't talk about it too much lol. I like samajyu a normal amount, I also like ichikuu, jiroshi, hifudo and hitojaku. I like a lot of other ships too tho, like ot3 mtc is good so is fling posse tho my favorite is ramugen. Hypmic has a bunch of cute ships so it's hard not to enjoy most.

17. Do you have a yume/self-ships? Platonic or romantic.

Not really lol, I have considered reading self insert before but I always feel a bit embarrassed. If you do you're super poggers tho.

not really one to need looking after; what i like to call a “high functioning drunk”

lightweight but aware of it; takes his time when he drinks

a very go with the flow type until messes start being made

likes to sit on the sidelines and watch the others have a good time; he gets enjoyment out of watching them enjoy themselves

laughs at the antics and jokes 99 line makes and only steps in to scold when it seems like hongjoong is going to burst a blood vessel

always the one to suggest a drinking night and is always the one that gets stressed about the mess made during

scolds mingi and san for constantly spilling their drinks

will ask you for help reigning the others in when its time to wind down

begs you to help him clean up after the others have called it a night

becomes very flirty when you’re alone and will probably teasingly brush his fingers along your arms or backside as he passes by

gives you soft kisses on the cheek and forehead and thanks you for having the patience he doesn’t

softly sings to you while you both clean

wants to cuddle you on the couch when you’re both finished

fucks you on it and tells you to be completely silent so you don’t wake the others

HONGJOONG

mercurial drunk

will switch from smiley and happy to irritable and angry in half a second

wants to fight everyone

knew this was a bad idea from the start but likes the excuse to drink and let loose for a bit

gets annoyed at the chaos and causes more chaos trying to quiet said chaos

likes to use the advantage of his age and make the younger ones get him more drinks

THE biggest lightweight; drinks way too fast and gets drunk before everyone else not even 45 minutes in

you spend a lot of the night laughing at him along with everyone else when he gets mad and then reigning him back in when the teasing gets too under his skin

tends to forget to eat to line his stomach when he drinks; please remind him

loudly whines to you about how no one respects his authority

wants you to tell him he holds all the power

and pointedly give jongho a look when he whispers that he doesn’t

curses 50x more with alcohol in his system

curses when he loses the drunk games you all play

even though he loses every time

passes out before the night is even over and has to be dragged to bed with help from the other members (usually seonghwa)

YUNHO

holds his liquor moderately well but doesn’t drink as much as the others, since he doesn’t necessarily HAVE to be drunk to enjoy drinking with them

LOUD; alcohol makes him forget volume control and he often starts yelling his words without meaning to until someone shushes him

giggly; everything becomes 50x funnier to yunho when he drinks and half the time no one else really thinks it’s funny but laugh at him because he won’t stop laughing

sentimental drunk and will tell everyone how happy he is that they’re all together and hanging out like this and how much he appreciates every single person there

gets bold with alcohol in his system and will make suggestive faces and eye contact at you across the room until he realizes yeosang has been watching the whole time

then he gets embarrassed and is quiet for at least 10 minutes

surprisingly agile; rarely spills or drops anything and is often catching other people’s food/cups if they topple off the table

always wants to play games when he’s drunk and thinks it will be even more fun while everyone else is drunk

he’s right.

until he loses. then it’s no longer fun for anyone because he becomes a sore loser and that’s intensified by alcohol

you’ll have to take him aside and distract him to cheer him up or he’s gonna sulk the rest of the night

usually ends with the others continuing to play without you while you two cuddle and smooch in the corner and are so sickeningly cute the other members gag

YEOSANG

what i like to call the “what if oxygen is poisonous and that’s what’s actually slowly killing us” or philosophical drunk

always asks the weirdest ass deep questions that no one is sober enough to think about

quietly sips his drink and watches the chaos until there’s a lull in the noise and then asks another weirdly deep question that doesn’t make sense until you overthink it

often gets made fun of and then told to shut up, but it never ruins his mood; he thinks its hilarious

another lightweight, but also takes his drinks in moderation

always tries to stuff himself with sweets until you tell him its going to make him sick; still tries to eat them anyway, so you’ll have to confiscate them.

makes cheesy puns and jokes and then laughs at them himself

promptly gets made fun of again for laughing at his own jokes, but he continues to laugh, aided by yunho.

they both get told to shut up.

but every now and then one of them is funny

and then everyone is laughing until seonghwa or hongjoong finally shushes them

is the one that usually beats yunho in the video games and causes him to sulk.

is very pleased with himself and wants you to be too

sneaks into the kitchen after seonghwa cleans to swipe snacks for both of you; you stay up for another hour eating them and talking about the universe

SAN

dear GOD he gets even louder, if that’s possible

will yell stupid things over all the noise just to hear the sound of his voice until wooyoung joins in

they both get hit by hongjoong

the cause of 75% of the laughter in the room

makes the weirdest jokes and impressions whether they fit into the conversation or not, and everyone dies laughing

another giggly and playful drunk

often gets too excited and knocks over drinks; sometimes they’re his but usually it’s someone else’s

touchy drunk. his hands are all over you, his arms are wrapped around you, his cherry vodka flavored lips are all over your face and he’s loudly telling you how much he loves you and you giggle and laugh for him

playfully teases you under the table but isnt at all as subtle as he thinks he is and everyone sees it

the others say you’re both gross and that the two of you need to get a room

san tries to make jokes about you going to his and yunho’s room to finish but is vehemently shut down by seonghwa

randomly becomes emotional in the middle of the night and starts telling everyone how much he loves them while on the verge of tears

which is usually when its unanimously decided that he’s had enough to drink for the night

he sulks for a bit and then is back to his usual antics not five minutes later

the night absolutely ends with the two of you messing around in the darkness of his room, both of you covering each other’s mouths so you don’t wake yunho

but yunho is always awake and aware of what’s going on

MINGI

real fuckin goofy ass drunk

nothing that comes out of his mouth makes sense and everyone laughs at him always

randomly starts rap battles with hongjoong and ends up losing because he starts laughing halfway through and cant finish

another accident-prone drunk; usually spills his drink while it’s in his hand because he’s laughing too hard or gets too excited

the worst potty mouth when he’s drunk; drops something? “fuck.” he doesn’t understand something that’s going on? “what the fuck???” he realizes he’s had way to much to drink? “shit i think i’ma fuckin’ throw up shitshitshitshit”

he usually doesn’t.

but sometimes he does.

not a lightweight but sometimes overestimates how much liquor he can hold and ends up drinking way too much

you’ll have to stick close to him to make sure he doesn’t break anything

skittish; will see things move in the corner of his eye and will assume it’s a bug or some other sort of unsavory creature and scream and jump out of his seat

its funny the first few times and then he starts getting very annoyed looks from the elder members + jongho

you figure its time to take him away before his ass gets beat

you lay on his bed in the dark and listen to him rap to you until he’s finally tired enough to fall asleep.

you think he’s cute.

WOOYOUNG

holds his liquor well and takes full advantage of it

probably has the most drinks of all of them next to mingi

extremely playful drunk

starts playing around with san and usually ends up yelling along with him until hongjoong or seonghwa steps in

sings into empty bottles as if they’re microphones and serenades everyone until san starts up a duet from across the table until everyone is dying with laughter

always the one to get misty-eyed when yunho and san get sentimental though he swears up and down he’s not crying

gets up and dances to whatever music happens to be playing in the background

rarely in his seat ever, really

keeps getting new cups and drinks because he sits his down and doesn’t remember where he put it because he’s never still

makes cute faces at you from across the room to make you laugh

the others thinks he’s disgusting

starts sexy dancing for you out of nowhere while maintaining eye contact across the room

the members thinks he’s even more disgusting; jongho throws whatever is in his reach at him

seonghwa makes him gather up all of his misplaced cups at the end of the night and you both sit on the kitchen floor and drink the contents of all of them

you both end up making out on the floor

seonghwa pretends not to notice but doesn’t dare step foot back into the kitchen

JONGHO

lightweight that doesn’t believe he’s a lightweight

always confident and believes he’s holding his liquor well and continues to drink until it all hits him at once

and then he’s fucked

but he’s fun

like yunho, everything becomes so much funnier to him when he’s drunk

but when he laughs he’s usually hitting/pushing the person next to him

strength control is non-existent when jongho is drunk, so whoever it is often gets sent flying

sings into his cups while he drinks

loves to push all the older member’s buttons while they’re drunk

“whispers” things about the members to you that everyone in the room hears

he thinks its funny and truly believes they won’t remember it when they wake up

which isn’t completely untrue, but yeosang and seonghwa always remember

you cut him off on drinks there before he starts getting too bold; you can only save him from so much

challenges everyone to arm wrestling matches that no one but you and san take him up on

he lets you win

he mercilessly destroys san

What do you usually eat for breakfast? Scrambled eggs with spinach and cheese. And coffee, duh. When was the last time you seen your best friend? I see my mom everyday, all the time since we live together. What was the last good movie you watched? I recently rewatched Endgame and Aladdin (the new live action one), both of which are really good. Especially Endgame. Still gets me in the feels. Do you rent movies at a store or on your tv? I haven’t had a sundae in years, but I liked to just get vanilla ice cream with strawberry syrup. I don’t care for sprinkles. Do you like whipped cream and nuts on it? closer is one of the ones where im like eh its ok its not my favorite and then it gets to the chorus and my dumb ass is jsut screaming YOU KNOW THE CLOSER YOU GET TO SMETHING THE TOUGHTER IT IS TO REACHIT. the funniest part where narutos moping and thinking of sasuke and then he just perks up and smiles at the camera like. gay boy. like getting to see the asuma fight scenes in this op, also it was so funny seeing him get all the screentime in this op knowing hes about to die like yeah very subtle

this one literally makes me cry. i get chills what the fuck. definitely one of my favs. am i a bitch? maybe. i like the song by itself but like the way the rise/general shape of the melody flows with the visuals its like oh god oh fuck. again fuck jiraiya but like the role his character serves as a link between these disparate groups of people and the way thats used in this opening… how it starts and ends with him writing and this is the arc where naruto reads tales of a gutsy ninja and he learns about how he got his name and jiraiya wrote the book and hes WRITING and im going CRAZY!! i’m starting to tear up watching it rn. the shot of konan and the pains in that moment just before they leap forward. FAV literally like naruto is drowning. hes drowning and everyone is pushing him up so he can breathe again everyone is fighting to save him and thnen he s ouf ot the water and then he sees sasuke drowning and he JUMPS BACK IN. SILHOUETTE IS a banger… not as much so as some of the others but its a lot of fun. very colorful op, we got some naruto pining for sasuke, classic. also love the thing where ppl are running and they age as they do and they sort of grow into their present selves, a fun visual bit. the end where narutos like obito be nice now look at all these people behind me who think youre a meanie please be nice :(((((((((

some things that help me during a bpd episode

☆ paint it out. i usually see a lot or colors in my brain as emotions so when i do some sort of art to get it out, it usually feels good. do some painting, cut out inspirational or pretty things from magazines and make a collage!

☆ for me, baking is one of my best coping mechanisms. whenever i feel really strongly about something or i'm confused, i'll bake something i love, or i try new recipes. the stimulation of my brain and my hands helps my anxiety a lot. you dont have to bake! you can cook whatever. hell, chop up a bomb ass salad and Instagram that shit if it makes you feel better.

☆ everyone has a favorite album, or song. i have a lot of music that can get me through my emotions (*cought*@taylorswift*cough*) and listening to an album or song that makes sense to you or just makes you feel good. tap your foot, feel yourself grounded and know you're here!

☆ i play a lot of different instruments and i sing, which is one of my favorite things to do, so i'll pick up my guitar or banjo or what have you and i'll twang away. i'll spend hours on ultimate guitar looking up funny boyband songs and turning them into long country guitar ballads.

☆ sometimes all i want to do is sleep. and you know what? i do. sometimes after i've been crying a lot or dont really know what to do with myself, i put on some rain and thunder sounds and lay down with my cat and try to drift off. please note that over sleeping isnt too good either, and if you're anything like me, you take depression naps.

☆ when i'm having a bpd episode and i'm stuck on my couch staring at the floor for 3 hours thinking about that one time in 3rd grade when i stole my friends favorite gel pen, i try to at least find a pen and some paper and try to write down what's going on in my brain. write it pretty. use colors. hell use the blood of your enemies as ink. just get something down even if it doesnt make sense at the time. go back and read it another day and try to process what you wrote down. a lot of the time i will find some of the things i was freaking out about were totally irrational and that was something i was definitely overthinking about.

☆ holy hell i love video games and i've been playing the elder scrolls since i was a wee lass. when i'm really irritated or angry i'll log on and just go murder a town full of people, steal their stuff and sell it for yahself. my therapist and i talk about this often and she also plays video games. she says its very cathartic.

☆ try lighting some candles and taking a bath. if you have some epson salt or healthy bath salts throw some of those in there. turn the lights off and try to concentrate on the hot water and how nice it feels.

☆ i hope that this helps some people and feel free to keep adding healthy additions to this post!

What I learned when I stumbled upon some amazing history of Concert A440 and the Treaty of Versailles.

How did I get here?

I had an amazing journey I wanted to share if only because it showed me why I live to learn and discover and uncover -- just for the fun and inspiration. I will die if I lose the curiosity that allows this sort of adventure. It took me weeks to share this, but I just wanted to because it was so much fun to learn this. I could have gone to Wikipedia and gotten a partial summation of this information, but as usual, if you look yourself, you get a whole bunch more context and in this case can see there is much more about the topic than just ‘the answer’.

Several weeks ago, I watched a You Tube video produced great educator and who goes by the handle of 12Tone. I love music history and theory videos. His friendly videos are usually really interesting. The topic of this video was right up my alley and exposed me to what I eventually discovered is a partial myth that seems to continue to be perpetuated, But it seems not to finish the story. What’s even more amazing is what I learned after the initial digging. I ended up learning all sorts of new things about imperialist politics, poison, antique automobiles, and more. I will post on these discoveries later. But this first post is about The Treaty of Versailles and its relation to Diapason Normal.

Diapason Normal

It started with this video https://youtu.be/BzznBt8tVnI from 12Tone. In the video he describes how the diapason normal was placed into the Treaty of Versaille (ratified 1919) which amazed him and certainly raised my scepticism.

As a very short background as to what Diapason normal is, you can watch the video or I will summarize it very simply here. When groups of instruments are about to play together there needs to be some way for the musicians to establish agreed pitch. If I was singing and you came along and started to sing with me without listening or trying to match the same note pitches, it would sound awful. This is what they call tone-deaf singing (which usually also accompanies relative tone deafness, too). So when a group gets together, the instruments set a pitch synchronicity. Usually this pitch is based upon a single note shared and adjusted to match that baseline to with all other notes will be played (relative to that note). Picture the pitch pipe being pulled out just before singers are going to sing together.

When you think about it, that single pitch (note) that is used to synchronize everyone can be anything, The perfect analogy is that it is like when folks synchronize watches. It almost doesn't matter what the first watch is as long as all the watches synchronize to it. Diapason normal was/is an attempt to formally standardize what ALL musicians will use as the baseline. Think of it like Greenwich Mean time based upon Big Ben (not really, though) or U.S. clocks standardizing on the Colorado atomic clock. We all use a reference clock to synchronize time. Diapason normal standard for musical tuning would be like the atomic clock standard for time.

The Treaty

If you followed the 12Tone video and/or if you do any rudimentary search on Diapason Normal (or even just ‘A 400 why?’) you quickly get to the point where everyone say the answer is in the Treaty of Versaille. Even I knew what the Treaty of Versaille is. But like most folks, I assumed it was simply the WWI armistice treaty and that it represented war ending types of things like who gets what, who concedes what, etc.

I started my quest to actually SEE the reference of D.N. in the Treaty of Versaille, Yes, in fact there is a reference to diapason normal in the treaty. But, the most interesting fact is that it is not directly there. Almost all of the simple Googly research keeps just saying the it’s in the treaty. All common references do actually specifically refer to Section 2- Article 282 (22) which does in fact directly mention the establishment of concert pitch.

and later down the line (22)...

And, since common use in my lifetime means that this is A400 (as all my piano tuning forks attest) is the definition so defined in this proclamation, This is where everything I saw on the subject leaves this.

But, if you are interested in the actual problem being addressed by this little sentence and if you understand that that half of the standards battle was about WHAT the value would be for diapason normal, you’d not be satisfied that this was what was meant in this sentence. “...establishment of a concert pitch” would definitely mean A440 as many folks presume online today. Or it could mean something else like A335, A445, or any value, actually.

Here is where the fun really began. If you look above at the text in the treaty, there are a whole bunch of other things that jump out at you; even more so if you actually skim through most of the text of the treaty (170 plus pages) PRIOR to getting to this point where an odd, tangential reference is made to a musical standard in the middle of a war treaty. Think about how funny that sounds. It turns out that section II, Article 282 is far more interesting to me than all of the rest of the treaty. As expected, the rest of the treaty is about who gets what land, and how reparations will be made, etc. But this one article has a whole bunch of stuff in it that seems totally strange. I will come back to this later. It was half of the fun; but later.

In that sentence is refers to another document. It references the “Convention of November 16 and 19, 1885...″ This is actually where the concert pitch is defined. It is NOT in the Treaty of Versaille.

So to look into this take a bit more foot(finger)work. It is not intuitively obvious what this convention is until you poke around in the musical history. As many have written and as is in the 12Tone video, the argument over common concert pitch has been going on for centuries. In fact, it links into the scientific megatrend of the mid-19th century. If you follow greater history, there are times of great public interest in science and discovery. In the mid 19th century on the toes and heals of the industrial revolution there was a lot of investment and interest in standardization and mechanisms to control and measure “things” using science. Lot of stuff was being given formal standard measurement tools like weights going from a common stone to being an actual piece of man-made metal with temperature and density requirements for the manufacture of weighing devices and for many other things like length. In fact, there is reference to this in the treaty, too (See #20). In the mid 1800′s there was work done to create a tool and standard to make music (tonation) standardize. In my opinion, this was following a lot of the social trends of that era. I am not a historian, but in seeing some of similar references from a common timeframe, it seems likely that in 1880′s scientific calibration and standardization was popular. Furthermore, the Industrial Revolution relied upon cooperative standards even if there were often conflicting ones. It is still an issue today with competing and evolving standard for many common and uncommon things.

I finally found the document, in Italian. It is called the Triattati e Convenzioni tra il Regno D’Italia e Gli Altri Stati.

And then you have to skip down to November, 1885...

There is it! I didn’t even need to translate (yet). It shows reference to diapason unico with these other countries! Is that ever interesting. I researched this document and work that looks like it was ongoing for a long time in in the 1880′s. I suspect I could have enjoyed several days of just looking into that whole document and its context. But I was at this time on a mission. What it is that this convention approved? I needed to keep digging.

And on page 727, here it is!

I still didn’t need a translate except for the monito secondo where I have to assume the vernacular is half second. [Side note: for several minutes I was freaking out because I thought it said “minute second” and didn’t know what that meant. It clearly says, “minuto” - as-in small (I assume to mean half-second).]

But wait? 870/2=435. 435 Hz is NOT 440Hz. So now officially, The Treaty of Versailles DOES NOT say that diapason normal is 440, it explicitly says that the value is 435 Hz. This was good news in that I got to the basis of the Internet claims that the treaty defined the standard, but the value proclaimed in the Treaty of Versailles is 435 Hz which, frankly maps better to what my little knowledge of what Europe wanted and used in the early part of the century.

The huge issue now was, why does (nearly) everyone in Western music use A440 and not A435? The research had to continue.

Before I go there, it is also fascinating to read the footnotes for the above. Basically in 1885, the scientists devised a formal way to make sure that a simple “tuning metal” would be used. This required semi-tight standards for manufacture of the metal and for temperature control of the standard measuring device. This comes back to hit us on the head -- almost literally -- in a minute.

If you break this down, you get a detailed description of who and how you get to the the device that perfectly creates a now-standardized 435 Hz pitch. It describes how the metal is made and what temperature it must be in order to produce exactly 435 Hz frequency ‘ringing’.

At this point I decided I was now waste deep in my research. But I am only half done. The standard so far is NOT 440 Hz! So all of these references to the treaty are just the starting point. As of 1919, Diapason Normal is locked-in for the world at 435 Hz. How did we get to 440 Hz as today’s norm?

I did the work, and sort-of know why how 440 happened. It isn’t as simple as Wikipedia says, either. I just looked at Wiki-p and it has some of the details. I will write up the next phase in my next post. It involves a lot more than just a standards body decision. Teaser: There are some U.S. national security interest involved. Yes, seriously.
