As a Diné/Latina little girl, I dreamed of becoming a model and fashion designer. My aunties would pick me up in their diesel Mercedes, braid my hair with ribbons, and dress me up like a Diné doll for photo shoots all throughout the Southwest. My mammasita got @seventeen magazine to come to @abqdeca when she was teaching their for a “class project”. Of course, I found a way to get featured in Seventeen Magazine even though I was only 10-yrs. old. Despite my childhood creative opportunities, I didn’t believe that I could model because I wasn’t the 6’ girl I wished I was and I enjoyed eating. Thankfully, the modeling industry is changing their standards to welcome diverse models of all shapes and sizes. The global fashion industry is a three-trillion dollar industry.
