So I've seen a few too many people on twitter talking about The Kiss Scene from the new Scott Pilgrim anime. People saying it's fetishistic and indulgent, people calling it male gazey, etc. And while the kiss itself is certainly a bit exaggerated, I felt like writing a bit about why I disagree, and why context is important, like it always is. But it basically turned into an extended analysis on the metatextual treatment of Roxie Richter. So bear with me. It's a long post.
Tumblr media
What really matters about this scene is not the kiss itself, but what precedes it. Not even just the fight scene just before it, but what precedes the whole anime series, really. And that's the Scott Pilgrim comic book, and the live action movie. Because in both, Roxie is a punchline.
She's a joke. Her character starts and ends with "one of the exes is actually a girl, I bet you didn't expect that." Jokes are made about Ramona's latent bisexuality, the movie especially treating it as funny and absurd, and her validity as a romantic interest is entirely written off by Ramona as being "just a phase." There's a fight scene, she's defeated by a man giving her an orgasm which implicitly calls her sexuality into question (come on), and the movie just moves on. It sucks. It really, really sucks.
Tumblr media
The comic fares a little better. It never veers into outright homophobia like the movie does, and while the line about Ramona having gone through a phase remains, Roxie actually gets one over on Scott when Ramona briefly gets back with Roxie. But Roxie is still only barely a character. Like all the other evil exes, she's just a stepping stone towards the male protagonist's development. She barely even gets any screentime before she's defeated by Scott's "power of love." But Roxie stands out, since she's the only villain who is queer, or at least had been confirmed queer at that point (hi Todd). In a series that champions multiple gay men in the supporting cast, the single undeniable lesbian in the story is a villain. She's labeled as evil, made fun of, pushed aside in favor of the men, and then discarded. Her screentime was never about her, or her feelings for Ramona. It was about the straight, male protagonist needing to overcome her. And that was Roxie Richter. An unfortunate victim of the 2010s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fast forward to current year, and the new anime series is announced. Everybody sits down to watch the new series expecting another retelling of the same story, and.... hang on, that straight male protagonist I mentioned just died in the first episode. And now it's humanizing the villains from the original story. And there's Roxie, introduced alongside the other evil exes in the second episode, and she's being played entirely straight, without a punchline in sight. No jokes are made about her gender, no questions are made of her validity as one of Ramona's romantic interests. The narrative considers her important. In one episode, she already gets more respect than she did in either of the previous iterations of Scott Pilgrim. And this isn't even her focus episode yet... which happens to be the very next one.
Tumblr media
The anime series goes to great lengths to flesh out the original story's villains and to have Ramona reconcile with them. And I don't think it's a coincidence that Roxie gets to go first. While Matthew Patel gets his development in episode 2, Roxie is the first to directly confront Ramona, now our main protagonist. This is notable too because it's the only time the exes are encountered out of order. Roxie is supposed to be number 4, but she's first in line, and later on you realize that she's the only one who's out of sequence. She's the one who sets the precedent for the villains being redeemed. She's the most important character for Ramona to reconcile with.
Tumblr media
What follows is probably the most extensive, elaborate 1 on 1 fight scene in the whole show. Roxie fights like a wounded animal, her motions are desperate and pained. Ramona can only barely fight back against her onslaught. Different set-pieces fly by at breakneck speed as Roxie relentlessly lays her feelings at Ramona's feet through her attacks and her distraught shouts. And unlike the comic or the movie, Ramona acknowledges them, and sincerely apologizes. And the two end up just laying there, exhausted, reminiscing about when they were together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Only after this, after all of this, does the kiss scene happen. Roxie has been vindicated, she has reconciled with the person who hurt her, the narrative has deemed that her anger is justified and has redeemed her character. And she gets her victory lap by making the nearest other hot girl question her heterosexuality, sharing a sloppy kiss with her as the music triumphantly crescendos.
It's... a little self-congratulatory, honestly. But it's good. It's redemption for a character who had been mistreated for over a decade. And she punctuates the moment by being very, very gay where everyone can see it, no men anywhere in sight. Because this is her moment. And then she leaves the plot, on her own accord this time, while humming the hampster dance. What a legend. How could anything be wrong with this.

REDESIGNING MAGIK
Welcome to Limbo! Our group chose Illyana Rasputina, the marvelous Magik for this round! Introduced as the younger sister of Colossus, Magik joined the 80s New Mutants team as a young teen and has since flourished into an A-Lister in her own right. She's been a member of the Phoenix Five, Cyclops' renegade X-Men squad, the Krakoan New Mutants, and the 2022 X-Men team.
She has several inspiration points for artists and redesigners to pull from. She's most well-known for her all-black 2012 look but has also sported demonic and fantasy influences as someone connected to the hellish Limbo and her malevolent alter ego, the Darkchylde.
See what our enthusiastic and talented team of artists did this round, and make sure to follow them on social media for more fantastic art!
(The handles presented after artists names are their Twitter handles, but many use the same name on other platforms!)
Léa Dupic | @/kimodraw
Tumblr media
"I went full speed ahead into medieval land and dressed Illyana in a full metal shiny armour, putting emphasis on her sword bearing arm with a biiiig spiky shoulder pad. Gave her a punk lesbian haircut while keeping her iconic bangs, because I think she should be allowed to be more of a punk lesbian. And I couldn't resist adding a touch of demon form with the horns. She's gloomy she's menacing she's spiky and shiny she's the girl of my dreams."
Giovanni Saroldi | @/RaulGiova
Tumblr media
"Just like matter, let’s give ‘Yana three states! Solid, liquid, gas? Kinda, not quite! From angelic to demonic, with her main form being the in-between totality of herself, where she can draw whichever power she needs.
It’s geometric, it’s chic, it’s retro-futuristic Terry Moore with the Horns of Galaxy The Prettiest Star meets Ludmilla from Bartok mid-transformation."
John Caden | @/johncaden64
Tumblr media
"I've always felt the Bachalo design was great, but could get very male-gazey.  I tried to make it more comfortable, while also keeping the same goth feel.  I do feel she needs to just go all-in goth, so let's shave her head, get some thick black mascara and commit to the bit! "
John Marsh | @/pastelrake
Tumblr media
"What if Illyana had been a Russian figure skater?"
Joe Pryde | @/joeprydecosplay
Tumblr media
"My inspiration for this design came from the idea of “what if Magik was an elder emo” complete with Kristen Stewart fem mullet, high waist buckled tights, and sleeveless crop top hoodie. I also wanted to pay homage to previous designs."
Haydn | @/ThatsSoHaydn
Tumblr media
"I had but one simple thought: What if the Soul Sword was a rapier? And thus fencing Magik was born. I wanted the geometric shapes of the dark bodysuit to contrast with the curves of the golden armor, whilst still adding a little magic and mystery with her cloak and mask. "
Dale Yaddow | @/DaleYaddow
Tumblr media
Version 1 "The Savage Magik". Having been stripped of her magical knowledge, Illyana Rasputin hunts down various enchanted artifacts to replace what she's lost. Becoming desperate she seems to be willing to steal and sometimes kill to get these talismans. Among these are the Soul Dagger of Pixie, the medallion of Daimon Hellstrom, Holy bands from "Heven" and a cursed skull from an alternate version of Lockheed.
Version 2 "Mistress Magik" This is an older more seductive Magik that's been corrupted by the influence of Selene and embraced her sensuality, opening up a whole new avenue of mystical arts that she hadn't dared explore before. She now uses her SoulSword to capture the essences of her foes and much like Selene feeds on them keeping her young and vital.
Version 3 "Magik, Queen of Hell" Many questioned the logic of Magik giving Limbo to Madelyne Prior but the end game has been revealed. Illyana allowed Madelyne to tether her magic to Limbo, knowing eventually "Maddie" would get greedy and begin bringing more power to that dimension. With a carefully hidden clause in the Limbo transference spell Magik takes back Limbo and all the power within it and successfully overthrows all the Hell Lords, unifying the many dreaded dimensions under one fearsome rule, hers.
Anthony Ruiz | @/thwwipstickers
Tumblr media
"Almost as soon as Magik was decided on for this design challenges I had two ideas strike me simultaneously ... The first of those ideas was the image of Illyana as a 90's Riot(ish) on the cover of a Magazine. I wanted to give her an edgy grungy vibe but still pay homage to her Demonic nature.
Shortly after Finishing my first Design I just knew I had to make my second idea come to life.
What if Illyana was an Anime Mech Pilot and Wore a Plugsuit... thats it... thats the idea. I really wanted to strike the Balance between Anime Plugsuit but still being noticeably Magik and X-men.
I kept the Bright yellow Color scheme with hints of black and red and chose to interpret her Armored arm into a Mechanized oversize cybernetic arm that helps fuel her Plasma Powered Soul sword that springs forth from her Gauntlet."
Isaiah Cox | @/isaiahbeenlost
Tumblr media
"When designing my Magik look, I wanted to expand on ideas I had when drawing her a couple years ago by keeping her look sleek, yet scary stylish! So, I referenced a lot of Castlevania and Yoshiaki Kawajiri designs to get that cool anime look for her down! I plucked some fashion inspirations for the costume from places like: Mugler, Alexander McQueen, LaQuan Smith, JRPG rogues and medieval accessories! And for her new soul sword, I decided to give her an Odachi because since she already lived her Cloud Strife fantasy starting from the Bendis-era, I thought it was time for her to live her Sephiroth moment with this giant Japanese sword!"
David J Hughes | @/0ddeity
Tumblr media
"I think with Magik I started out pretty traditional for her. Then I got to thinking our Russian Queen deserves a Mugler-esque fit. I wanted to go down the knight or warrior route, but then I thought ‘What If’ this was an AU Illyana raised by Patch and she got all of Logan’s training rather than Kitty and Jubilee, or, alongside them. So, bham, Oni-demon menpo mask and samurai elements on top of the Mugler flair."
Fleshmonk | @/fleshmonk
Tumblr media
"Went through a bunch of design iterations, but settled on this cool plasticky vinyl plugsuit like version of Magik. I gave her a bob to mature her a bit and to move her towards a new silhouette."
Joshua Bruckner | @/joshingtonbear
Tumblr media
"I took a bit from Magik's more armored designs, which I've always liked the most, and her goth jock aesthetic, and blended them. I rejected the Bachalo booty shorts in favor of a skirt, which gives her a bit of a 'cheerleader from hell' look."
Seye Sanyaolu | @/seye_art
Tumblr media
"My intention for this redesign was Magik in a very dystopian future and so I imagined a 3/4 darkchylde Illyana that is in control of her self and powers (although almost lost it). In this future, most of the X-Men are gone and Illyana keeps a worn and frayed X-jacket on for the nostalgia :’)"

so i follow you on twitter, and i was thinking about the tweet you made a while back about how stupid the bloodline jokes are and it reminded of some stuff i saw when cantabile was first released on cn with her elite 1 promotion voice line... it was fan translated as like "So this is how it feels to hold life inside me" or something and straight cisbro arknights fans were making "lol doctor got her pregnant" jokes. it was honestly infuriating because that voice line is just supposed to be her finally realizing she holds her own life in her own hands, and she doesnt have to be afraid of being thrown away anymore. i adore her character and found family undertones and just seeing all of it reduced to the same stupid "bloodline" shit made me so incredibly angry
anyway sorry i know this was probably random and you dont need to answer this or anything but i just appreciate the fact that youre so open about how much that joke sucks because i see it way too much.
p.s. i really love your art and youre the biggest reason i got into the saria and muelsyse ship, cause i wasnt able to do dorothy's vision and havent been paying attention to cn news for a while
I don't have Cantabile, but I can believe it :/ Sorry to hear that; if it's not about how she's meta, it's about breeding. Disgusting.
Cishet dudebros, gachabros, waifubros (they're all synonymous with each other really; we need another moniker other than 'bro' to describe them because 'bro' implies friendliness and these generally aren't the type of people you want to interact with anyway) are all the same.
Haha, NTR Knight. Haha, SilverAsh pimping out his sisters. Haha, Mlynar pimping out his nieces. Haha let's repopulate the Draco/Aslan/Elf/etc. race. All the same braindead lowest-hanging fruit "joke" that somehow just won't die. Yes, because reducing a female character to nothing but a hole is funny. And even if they say "it's not that serious, chill", one look at their timeline and it's full of egregiously sexualized pinups of anime girls, if not outright male-gazey porn.
I do my best to insulate myself from dregs of society but every so often they escape containment and I see things I don't want to see against my will (often by people who don't know how to ignore/block and feel the incessant need to dunk to feel morally superior).
Thanks for telling me. I'm glad that I'm the kind of person that people feel safe being around, and a reprieve from those types of comments.
And thank you again, I love SaMuel very very much and I encourage you to read Dorothy's Vision and the translated Rhine Lab comic (Records of Originium: Rhine Lab) when you can. That's what started the brainrot and I've never been the same since.

It's nice to get some non-gross Mikuru content. I haven't talked much about Mikuru because she's...
She's hard to talk about.
Tumblr media
Mikuru bonding with, uh... with... the sister....
Does she have a name?
Anyways, Mikuru bonding with Kyonsis is cute. I wish I could like the Kyon/Mikuru ship. Which is to say, they get enough cute moments and development together that I would totally support this ship if the show didn't also have Kyon grossly indulging in Mikuru's harassment too.
...in general, a lot of the way the show handles Mikuru is gross. Like. They even brought in Future Mikuru at one point to wax nostalgic about Haruhi's harassment.
Tumblr media
That's the kind of move a creator makes when they know they're being gross and want defensibility. "It's okay, she secretly likes it; She'll look back on it fondly some day."
I'm never really sure what to make of Mikuru because this isn't, like, a Male Gazey kind of show. It doesn't have the typical background noise of camera shots lingering on objectified body parts or slow panning over female bodies that typify shows made from the perspective of the Male Gaze.
Even things like the bunny girl outfits or Haruhi aggressively beginning to change while people are still in the room as a power play aren't dwelt on to the extent you'd expect from the Male Gaze.
But Mikuru feels like a character from one of those kinds of shows. The recurring joke is Haruhi physically bullying Mikuru, forcibly stripping her, making guys molest her, making her dress in various fetishized costumes, forcing her to eat expired shit from that guy's fridge they broke into, etc. - often to the point of leaving Mikuru in tears, and... that's it. That's the punchline. LOL Haruhi objectifies her body and treats her like shit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is one of three main things Mikuru does. The second is to form a Love Corner of
Haruhi -> Kyon (<-?) -> Mikuru
And honestly? Like 90% of the time, Kyon and Mikuru's interactions are great. But then he does shit like saving those erotic Mikuru photos he made Haruhi delete to a private folder for his personal perusal. Or says shit like this.
Tumblr media
Or the show does shit like this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Future Mikuru literally telling Kyon, "For compensation, feel free to make out with my past self while she's drugged!"
He does not. Thankfully. But it's so fucking weird that she even said that. Why would you write this dialogue?
And then her third thing is time travel. Which isn't given the same level of gravitas as Itsuki and Yuki. She can't fight the battles like they can. She can't exposit information like they can because everything's classified. She isn't even very good at time travel; It's explicitly brought up that Yuki's better at it.
Essentially, she has no powers or abilities beyond being present in the group so Kyon can ogle her and Haruhi can molest her.
If this were a big Male Gaze type of show, I'd be like, "Oh, yeah, she's the Fanservice Girl. Got it." But it's not. So I just. I don't understand why she's handled like this. Why is this here?
Which is what makes it nice when the show isn't doing that, and instead we get nice Mikuru content where she's being happy and everyone's treating her well.
Tumblr media
Less of... whatever all of that is and more of this please. She's great with kids! She plays Go Fish!
Tumblr media
Which she took second place in, by the way. Mikuru beat God at cards and entertained the small child while doing it. So HA!

You apply this concept of mistresses as something removed from how most people would use the word and I’d like to know what it means to you. I also want to know because you said I was channeling my inner mistress and I am a trans man, yet maybe I read it as channeling the young woman I used to be and the part of my identity she is, but I felt seen by that message. Does mistress equal femininity?
mistress for me is a concept of empowerment, both fluid and universal. something that can be applied to everything without further definition. without the need to be defined, but with certain qualities nevertheless
a mistress is strong, a mistress is brave, a mistress is powerful
being a mistress is being dominant but for pleasure. being a mistress is owning the room with dignity. being a mistress is using your sexuality for the greater good
that's something LGBTQ+ related for me too. because we queer people often get denied our sexuality. not just identity wise, but also in terms of attraction and beauty. we get pathologized by fanatics instead. either we are supposed to be weak or sick
(except from the toxic male-gazey view on lesbianism) we are not recognized as beings worthy to be worshiped. but we are. we are strong, brave and powerful. we are mistresses. nobody has the right to deny our grace, to deny our appeal, to deny our sexiness
anything is okay, as long it makes you stronger, braver and more powerful. you are full of love. channel your inner mistress and make it yours
God put the moon into the night, to picture our endless pride and the moon obeys the mistress, because the mistress is resistless

idk if this is a controversial opinion or not, but i REALLY love nami's timeskip design. like yes its more sexualized and the proportions are off and it can definitely be argued as more male gazey, but i just kinda think about how it represents nami as a character and i get a little emotional
nami pre timeskip isn't exactly masculine, but she definitely presents less femininely than her personality would entail.
nami is assertive, catty and sardonic, and someone who uses her femininity to her own gain. she loves dresses, fancy outfits, jewelry and money, generally feminine things, but all she wears is t-shirts, tank tops, and shorts -- all incredibly practical outfits for stealing and running from the law. she doesn't actually start wearing shorts and t-shirts until she joins arlongs crew, before that, she wore exactly one dress. i'd suspect too that she keeps her hair short because long hair just isn't practical to steal with. the same hairstyle she's had since she was a kid, figuratively trapping herself in the past like how she's still trapped in the moment arlong took her village hostage.
so post timeskip nami growing her hair out, wearing things that look cute more than anything else, putting on lots of jewelry, it just feels like she finally got the chance to be herself in that timeskip. she's not scared of getting caught by someone grabbing her hair while she runs, or not being able to climb a fence because her skirt is too tight, she's a sorceress now! she's a weather witch! she can afford to look as cute as she pleases!
i don't know, it just feels really nice to see her be able to assert her femininity in a way that she wasn't able to before For Fear Of Her Own Mortal Soul because she's finally confident in her place in the world, and her own abilities. that's really sweet!
(p.s. this only works because nami has always enjoyed girly things and only recently got the ability to be more openly herself, if she was genuinely a tomboy or someone who enjoyed dressing practically, her going more high-feminine after the timeskip would be dumb and bad)

👾😔👑🧚 for the ask game :-]
love linkvcr
👾 Least favorite Zelda game (OH YOU WANT ME TO BE A HATER. I WILL GLADLY BE A HATER)
Breath of the Wild. It’s a fabulous game I just have this really strong reaction to that particular style of voice acting (don’t know how to describe it….? Like anime voice acting sorta?) and it makes my skin feel weird and prickly. Also just not a fan of open-world games! Totk was less offensive as it didn’t have the misfortune of being the first game to introduce those two concepts. lol
😔 Least favorite Zelda character
ooohhhh I am SOOOOOOO glad you asked me this one. hater mode engage. PURAH🖕ok hater mode off
👑 Favorite version of Zelda
Making up for my haterism with this one. Botw/totk Zelda MY FAVEEEEEEEE FOREVER. I absolutely love how they portrayed her character. She’s so genuine and sweet and she has this quietness to her that’s just. ouuuuugghhhh I love her
🧚 Favorite Zelda companion
Midna!! Funfact I used to dislike Midna as a kid. I think she felt male-gazey to me and that made me uncomfortable. Anyway I LOVE that she’s first portrayed as demanding and bratty and uncaring but your view of her slowwwly changes as she and link learn about each other + begin to understand each other's worlds. And soon you realize she’s nowhere near as thoughtless as she seemed at first. There's a quiet side to her that's just raghghhaghhhgh so compelling to me. I love that she’s a flawed character whose fear and shame brought out a kind of ugly side of herself. I also love that one of her main mechanics is literally a TRUST FALL LIKE THAT IS SUCH!!! A GOOD WAY TO SHOW LINK (and you as the player) PLACING HIS TRUST IN HER!!! And this happens like 10 minutes into knowing her (iirc). You literally have to trust that she’ll catch you. AND SHE ALWAYS DOES!!!!! That’s insane

i have come to the realization that vnc is a fantastic example of anime fanservice that appeals to the female gaze. from the character design to the way that intimacy is so closely tied to vulnerability,,, don’t get me started i could go all day
Oh absolutely! It is so obviously catering to the female gaze, lol.
Like, the main 4 characters are all objectively designed to be hot, and Domi and Jeanne are certainly curvy enough, but the camera tends to linger and emphasize certain scenes of Noé and Vanitas in a way that it really doesn't for the gals. Remember that scene where Noé gets bit by Chloé in Gévaudan? Mochijun isn't subtle sometimes. And even in moments like the VaniJeanne scenes, almost all of the focus is usually on Vanitas and his reactions to things. Like, a male gazey version of those scenes almost certainly would not be zooming in on details like Vanitas's blushing and his hand covering his mouth, y'know?
I've said it before, but despite technically being a shonen, Vnc's hornier scenes have much more of a josei vibe to me than anything else. It's totally lacking in that sort of "boobs lolll" tone that usually defines fanservice in shonen media.
(That's also why the couple of moments in the anime adaptation that do get more male gazey really stood out to me lol. They added an extra shot, like, panning down Jeanne's body when she strips in that cabin, and I could immediately tell it was an added shot that wasn't in the manga bc it just felt so jarring and un-mochijun.)
And meanwhile, when it's Domi and Jeanne getting into more actiony scenes, the way they're framed actually makes them feel powerful and cool, and not just props to drool over like you sometimes get. One of my favorite Jeanne panels in the whole series is this one:
Tumblr media
because it's such an archetypal "badass action hero" framing. How many times have you seen this exact pose with a woman collapsed on the ground as the hero stands above or just in front of her, swooping in to rescue her from danger? And every aspect of how she's drawn, from the perspective to the power stance to the cape flowing in the wind, is pulled from a "baby's first badass" art guide. And it works! It's a popular kind of shot for a reason! But it's fairly rare to get this kind of classic action hero framing applied to women. It's not often I get to bust out the phrase "female power fantasy," but you can definitely apply it to some scenes in Vnc.
(Even though there's kind of an interesting tension there, since outside her badass soldier shtick, the whole point of Jeanne is that she's a woman who really doesn't have any kind of power or agency. But that's a problem for another day).
I have a feeling this is probably part of why Domi and Jeanne seem to appeal to wlw so much. Because in addition to Dominique being queer as hell, they're both hot women who have scenes dedicated to going "fuck yeah, look how cool and powerful she is" in a non-male-gaze way. That shot of sweaty Domi flipping her hair out of her face in the amusement park doesn't really fit the typical shonen brand of "hot girl," but it absolutely works as wlw bait.

i made a bumble account bc i kinda don’t want to be alone forever but idk how to do this lmao like first of all i set my preferences to women only and guys keep showing up i assume bc they set their identity to woman bc they want to stand out more or else just violate SSA women’s boundaries idk. then like i feel like every woman i see has made her profile very male gaze focused like it’s all fake lashes and ass shots and i don’t think i could be with a person like that now that my eyes are open to the evils of “personal choice feminism”. and then when i see a woman without makeup whose presentation doesn’t seem so male gazey of course she’s non-binary or uses she/they or says she’s a trans ally in the bio. i’m legitimately scared that people will like try to expose me for being a terf if i try to talk about my beliefs to someone to see if they’re on the same page and like i have my face my location and my name on there. how the fuck do you guys find women to date

thoughts on the idol: episode 1
okay, so it’s most definitely not the hot pile of garbage people expected/want it to be. it’s very much like euphoria stylistically. there’s a focus on trendy visual aesthetics first and foremost, and edgy teen twitter dialogue spoken à la maddy perez.
listen, we do not care about the “romance” between jocelyn and tedros. cut that shit out. we’re not buying it. they’re dedicating way too much time to abel and lily rose feeling each other up and moaning all the time. that shit’s not interesting. it’s giving after and fifty shades. it’s not something we’re rooting for or into.
i rather like jocelyn’s character and what they’re trying to represent with her. they’re trying to portray the pitfalls of popstardom and being a trendy sex symbol in hollywood. but jocelyn’s a pretty reductive character so far. we only get to see her through the camera lens in this episode. we have no idea how jocelyn sees herself.
having jennie on this show was a good move imo. she’s kind of the jocelyn of kpop right now. i mean, hyuna or lee hyori are probably the best examples of a jocelyn if you look at kpop overall? but still. it’s kind of meta having jennie in the show.
no, i don’t think it’s a rape fantasy. it’s quite gratuitous, and i don’t think most of it is necessary as pertains to the storytelling at all, but hey, that’s hbo. most of the sex isn’t necessary in game of thrones or industry. heck, most of the swearing isn’t actually necessary in succession either. but it doesn’t bother me. like jocelyn’s nudity i get – she makes bank on commercializing her body and selling herself as a sex symbol after all. but the softcore stuff between tedros and jocelyn is stupid. they should have cut that shit.
i know this is all about bella hadid. somehow.
the acting is just okay. it’s not grossly unwatchable, but it’s basically euphoria without the emotional gut-wrenching zendaya bits. i kinda liked troye and all the pushy executive side characters though.
pro: it’s obvious the show is a satire. con: it’s way too male gazey to me to believe it’s entirely dedicated to being a satire. make of that what you will. the show’s having too much fun satirizing.

I sent the show!Jonsa ask! Yeah, I was toying with it because one of the sticking points for me is figuring out why the show did or didn't do Jonsa and why that may or may not happen in the books. That to me is really some of the most damning stuff, and I can't point to Dany's arc in the show or Stannis' etc. (many of the examples you use) as argumentation for what makes sense in the books but have yet to have happened without, too, including Jonsa.
Anon asks are limited by length (and I would not want to waste your time with adding caveat after caveat lol) but I do also have complicated feelings about D&D; on the one hand I think there were serious problems on set and I have a lot of capital F feminist problems with them, but that doesn't belie all the creative work they put into the show (I do think there are Choices they made about how to portray romance without the source material at hand, and even before that honestly, but I already wrote that ask lol).
You're definitely right about the heaping of romantic parallels; one or two of those relationships alone could be written off, but the Sam/Gilly one is very weird, and Kit's acting choices are... very weird lol. Re: Sansa's jealousy, I had read that more as Dark Sansa foreshadowing as opposed to Jonsa jealousy, so I don't know???? When it comes to show!Jonsa I mostly only like the S6 dynamic anyway, so that might be down to some of my bias.
Basically I'm trying to entertain alternative ideas that might explain things as opposed to genuinely arguing for show!Jonsa being an accident, and I was thinking about this as well because it is an issue I've encountered with shipping/romance/fandom in general before. The male-gazey tropey dynamic ends up feeling off, but by virtue of the romance goggles of the author not being applied to another dynamic, it ends up feeling more mutual and less objectified and more interesting lol. A good example off the top of my head, given you've just watched the MCU films, is that I shipped Steve/Natasha (yes...) because the dynamic in Winter Soldier was above and beyond any other M/F pairing in the films. Naturally everybody goes on about ~platonic soulmates~ but I love good guys with sad/evil/redeemed ladies so I can't help it. Not saying it's at all canon though, I think they absolutely stumbled into that one.
I'm glad your nephew enjoyed the MCU films! I remember when I rewatched Endgame with my best friend, her dad came in and we had to keep explaining who the 'blue one and the green one' were. It made the film much better.
Anyway, thank you so much for entertaining my ask, and as always, being such a good sport. 🥰💝
(continuation of this convo)
You have no idea how much I sympathize with the caveat issue. I write answers and then delete entire paragraphs because I have such a tendency to try to clarify everything that it makes things less clear because I bury the point, but then I regret it when the vague blogs start. We all have limited time though, and every answer can't be thousands of rambling words! Sometimes I've literally just said "insert caveat" lmao!
I do also have complicated feelings about D&D; on the one hand I think there were serious problems on set and I have a lot of capital F feminist problems with them
I read this article about Emilia's experience on set for GoT (I have not been able to relocate it, but I did actually read an article with her quotes--it wasn't just a tumblr post), and I felt that she was taken advantage of when it came to the nudity/sex scenes. I actually think she meant for some of the stories to be amusing, but I felt sick reading it. She didn't say it was D&D, but apparently when she wanted to do less nudity going forward, she was told her fans expected it and it became a fight trying to move away from it, and....I just worry about the power dynamics with all these young actresses and what they're told they "need" to do. The fact that even if they ultimately agree to certain things, it still may be a result of coercion or they aren't actually being taken care of/feel safe when doing it...it left a very bad taste in my mouth regarding the behind the scenes stuff. And obviously, we all noticed the changes they made to the story, what they did to Sansa...plenty of things we can take exception to purely on what made it to our screens.
Basically I'm trying to entertain alternative ideas that might explain things as opposed to genuinely arguing for show!Jonsa being an accident
I enjoy doing that too! Groupthink is boring! I don't expect everyone to think the same way/come to the same conclusion, and I've changed my mind on a few things which only happens if we're willing to entertain different ideas instead of shutting people down. I mean, I'm not easily persuaded to a different way of thinking, but I try to be open to it. With the condition that someone interprets Sansa in a way I can live with which excludes most of the fandom/their theories tbh.
I basically work myself to one position and then back to where I started when it comes to show Jonsa. If it was an accident, I don't love it any less, if it wasn't, I'm curious what the hell happened. I didn't get what I wanted there, so it really doesn't matter to me what people conclude. I genuinely thought it was amusing when Kit acted surprised when he was asked about Jonsa because it was his face that was saying "not normal sibling feelings here." Silly man. 😂 And, D&D fucked up enough I don't like to take them too seriously, so I can't say, "this doesn't make sense therefore it was an accident" because, uh, a lot of their choices ultimately made no sense.
it is an issue I've encountered with shipping/romance/fandom in general before. The male-gazey tropey dynamic ends up feeling off, but by virtue of the romance goggles of the author not being applied to another dynamic, it ends up feeling more mutual and less objectified and more interesting lol.
I certainly agree about the general male v female view of romance. I found that a problem when I said that they didn't write a romance for Jonerys, and the guy I was talking to was like, "they had sex tho???" There was just...a massive gap between what we were looking for when talking about the characters/relationships. Although, he did know what I meant when I said "well, they filmed Jon and Sansa like a ruling couple." He immediately understood that. And, considering what they did to the sandsnakes (I'm not saying the line), I do understand the argument that if they meant for there to be a romance, they would have done it in such a way that we would have objected.
I think part of the reason I believed Jonsa was intentional was because I don't ship non canon pairings. My brain isn't one to think, "oh but what about those two" as I wasn't even involved in fandom before, and I generally just took what a story was and reacted to it, rather than re-configuring it. Obvy, having been in the fandom for so long now, that's changed somewhat, but for me, s7 was a total puzzlement, and Jonsa / some variation of poljon was the only way it connected to everything we had established before. In a bizarre twist, we didn't get the story that would make it coherent, but we still got the endpoint: Jon betraying Dany for Sansa. It's still weird to me, all these years later. Now I'm mainly bemused rather than angry though.

Do you have any more yuri recs?
sure, here's a few
love thy neighbor: about 24 year old uni student pah doyeon and her 40 year old housewife neighbor jin joo. jin joo's husband left her alone as he works to pay off his debts, and it has Not been a fun few months for her, as the loan sharks after him have been terrorizing her daily. luckily, pah doyeon is there to lend a hand and shelter!
probably my biggest recommendation as of right now, so long as you don't mind the very much not healthy nature of the whole situation. this baby's got everything in it: blasphemy, cheating, milf-hunting, obsession, self-discovery through lust, and so on. pah doyeon is great. there's a lot wrong with her. she said this shit unprompted in the latest chapter
Tumblr media
a love yet to bloom: a sweet story about takamine, who has yet to find anything in life she enjoys, and sakura, a book-loving girl she happens to meet on the train after school. it's very cute and has a nice, chill atmosphere. i always look forward to the next update
otome no teikoku: ok so. heres the thing. if you decide to pick this up the first, idk, dozen chapters will be Bad. there's a lot of male-gazey uncomfortable stuff at the beginning, and while it doesnt take too long for it to stop feeling so offputting and start being surprisingly wholesome and earnest instead, it never stops being horny, so read it if youre in the mood for that.
as for what it's actually about... well there's this all girls school, right? and it has girls in it. and they are all gay and dating each other. its basically just a collection of short chapters about different couples within this school, and it has some of my favorite dynamics and moments in yuri. i reread it very often (and there's almost 300 chapters of this thing out, so that's a feat) and it never stops being enjoyable. stan nononon/yumimi
a monster wants to eat me: about hinako, who lost her whole family to the sea in a tragic accident and now yearns to join them in the afterlife, and shiori, a mermaid claiming she's here to eat her. the problem is, hinako being actively suicidal and depressed means her flesh won't exactly be very tasty, and shiori is a bit of a gourmet, meaning her goal is to first help her recover and regain her joie de vivre, and only then will she eat her. i highly recommend this
out of the blue!: transfer honor student x delinquent yuri. it's very short so i dont wanna yap about it too much, but it's a big big personal fave. it's only 4 chapters so check it out
sougou tovarisch: honestly anything by arata iri never fails to get at least one laugh out of me, but this one especially. if you know a kiss and a white lily by canno (and if you don't, go check it out), the premise to this one is a bit similar to the dynamic between ayaka and yurine, with hardworking MC obsessed with being number one and chill love interest who beats her without even meaning to.
the focus here is less on romance and more on comedy, and i love it. kanna is amazing. she wins a chess match by punching her opponent so hard she passes out. its only 13 chapters + assorted extras, very fun easy read
now some stuff that doesnt really have yuri as focus but ive really enjoyed regardless and want to shout out and this is my blog so whatever
liar satsuki can see death: satsuki can see dead people. specifically, she can see the future corpses of people up to 24 hours before they actually die. she always zealously warns the future victims of the imminent danger, and she has been branded a weirdo and a liar for it as no one has ever actually died before. in truth, she is actually literally incapable of lying, and the only reason everyone survived so far is that she will go to frankly insane lengths to save them. she's a great protagonist and her autistic swag has captivated me and many others
mieruko-chan: miko can see... Things. that no one else can. but she has to pretend she cant, especially to the Things themselves. she doesnt know exactly what will happen if they realize she can see them, but she's certainly not about to find out.
this started as a twitter short that quickly gained popularity, so the premise of many early chapters is basically "miko sees something terrifying and has to ignore it, hilarity ensues", but the initially one-off characters introduced over time are eventually explored and given quite a lot of spotlight and im having a lot of fun with it. stan michiru
there's always more but here's what ive got so far- wait. read shuukura. ive talked about it before it's in my pinned please read shuukura i love those weirdos to an insane degree

Also Taylor has always been so careful about how much she wanted to show of her body. How sexy she wanted to be in mv/stage etc. How explicted she is with lyrics. Like is something she is very reserved about and is her right to be. And then having her body (not real but still) being exploited like that in such a vile way, it pisses me off.
Exactly. Like people have often noted that for a long time, she was the least male gazey female singer out there and that the main reason she's joked about as being a 'serial dater' is because she was reserved enough not to have any other major controversies. And unfortunately, I'd argue that that's a big part of the reason that whoever created these AI pictures chose that medium to punish and attempt to control her with because it was the most shocking in ways it may not be with other celebrities (not that they'd deserve it either, just I think people would consider other mediums to be a prick over, you know?)
