Last weekend, my husband and I went to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City. One of the featured artists whose work we were immediately drawn to is Iranian-born Shirana Shahbazi (شیرانا شهبازی). We really wanted to buy her work but alas it is certainly out of our budget! Her works were bright and colorful featuring geometric shapes and abstract concepts. You can see her full MOMA exhibit here.

After doing a bit of research on Shahbazi, it turns out her exhibition at MOMA was part of a deliberate effort by the museum to feature artists from countries on Donald Trump’s Muslim ban where many of their classics from Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso were replaced with contemporary works of art by Muslim artists like Shahbazi. (Artnet News)
Shahbazi was born in Tehran in 1974 but moved to Germany at the age of eleven. She went on to study art and design at the Fachhochschule Dortmund in Germany and continued her artistic studies in Zurich, Switzerland where she resides currently with her husband and daughter. Her work has been featured worldwide at MOMA, Tate Modern in London, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and several other museums and galleries across Europe, Lebanon, and Australia.
Shahbazi has worked with Iranian artists to paint her photographs onto billboards or weave them into rugs. Shahbazi said in an interview with Artnet that she was inspired by the way Iranians think of art: “I have found that [Iranians] don’t represent things that are normal—just an ordinary portrait, a mountain, and so forth,” she’s said. “If a mountain is depicted there then it has to be the highest, the most beautiful, important mountain. So I tried to take on a little of this idea of things being big, nice, colorful, and yet ordinary at the same time—replacing the subjects.”[1] She has featured photographs of everyday Iranians in her exhibits like these:
What I love about her work is how versatile it is and the impressive innovative range of techniques she uses. Her work spans everything from modern, conceptual abstract installations, photography of portraits and landscapes, and she also incorporates Iranian culture and traditional artistic techniques into her work.

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. 5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? 6 On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone— 7 while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? In this work, a set of ten paintings , it has been tried to focus on a portrait/figure painting style of persons from different nationalities, blended by representative cultural patterns and shape-based Persian calligraphy decorated by Persian poets or a description of the painter’s knowledge, feeling or experience about the “girls she knows”. The exhibition also tries to seek a proper way to represent the painter’s experience as a foreigner in a new world with different culture and life style. To do this technically, a set of tuned, well-known patterns mostly common in Iran has been used using acrylic. Mixing with Persian words strongly reflects the painter’s introspective study of cultural differences while pursuing a technique to deform the words on the body of objects in some works.
