Tywin and Rosalind’s Children
I’ve decided to update the Prologue chapter eventually, there will be some changes but the biggest is that I want Rosalind to be married to Tywin for longer, and that means more heirs to the Lannister legacy. I’m getting better with using Artbreeder, though it’s still not quite what I would truly like it to be. I have these potential children all planned out for birth dates and appearances but I will not reveal more than the first two’s years to avoid unwanted spoilers.
Tyrus Lannister, the heir to Casterly Rock
Born: 299AC at Casterly Rock
Looks: He possesses the traditional Lannister colors, Tyrus has light golden hair that he wears short with emerald green eyes. He resembles his half-brother Jaime and Uncle Kevan or a softer feature version of his father Tywin. (Eyes reference, duller and a bit darker)
Name: From the Lannister traditions of “Ty” and works as a combination of Ty+win in regards to his sister Winona as the first two children of Tywin from Rosalind. The name Tyrus means “land of the yew tree” from Tyrone and “heir to the throne” from Cyrus. The fictional weirwood trees resemble real-life yew trees to reference Rosalind’s homeland and fulfill Tywin’s dream of a worthy heir to replace Jaime and prevent Tyrion’s claim from coming to fruition after his death.
Winona Lannister
Born: 299AC at Casterly Rock
Looks: She displays the classical appearance of Lannister women with wavy golden hair, though hers is much darker than the common light whitish blonde hair. Winona has jade-green eyes flecked with gold like her father’s. She does not have the true beauty that Cersei, Myrcella, and Joanna possess. Winona is considered to be fairly pretty though not particularly remarkable. (Wavy hair alternate and Eyes reference)
Name: Winona is partially named after her father’s suffix matching Tyrus’ name possessing the prefix of Tywin’s name. Winona originates from the Dakota people and their language wherein Winúŋna means “first-born daughter”. It is closely related to Wynora / Eleanor which is derived from Greek and means “shining light”.
Aredian Lannister
Born: xxxAC at Casterly Rock
Looks: He primarily reflects his Lannister heritage with some traces of the Stark long facial structure. Aredian has golden hair that he wears shoulder length with some light waves in texture. In his beard, eyebrows, and hair undertones there are hints of the Tully auburn color. His eyes are minty grey-green and melancholic. Aredian is considered to be of average appearance with no common trait of attractiveness. (Eyes reference)
Name: Aredian is derived from many different things. In Scandinavian cultures, Ari means eagle, and Ari in Hebrew means lion. In the Badaga language, Ari also means “sun-like”. The combination of an eagle and a lion create the griffin creature which is seen as the king of kings for beasts as the lion is referred to as the king of the jungle and the eagle the king of skies. Aredian is partially remade from Adrian which from Latin correlates to the sea or water to make a general reference to Casterly Rock’s location on the coast of the Sunset Sea.
Pronounced as “Uh - rid - ian”, similar to iridium
Loreon Lannister
Born: xxxAC in King’s Landing
Looks: He has golden hair with pale green eyes flecked with gold, his eyes are shrewd and calculating. Loreon is a spitting image of Tywin in his youth, he resembles his father tremendously leading to comments on Loreon being Tywin’s twin or clone. Loreon wears his hair short and tidy. He sports a light beard that is also neatly trimmed. (Eyes reference)
Name: From the ancestors of House Lannister, Loreon the first King of the Rock.
Clayre Lannister
Born: xxxAC in King’s Landing
Looks: Clayre has auburn hair with bright green eyes. She favors Rosalind the most and is fond of her Tully heritage. Her hair is straight and she generally wears it long and unadorned. There are soft brown undertones to her hair. Clayre is comely in appearance and is often regarded favorably like her Aunt Sansa and Grandmother Catelyn. (Eyes reference)
Name: It is a respelling of Claire which means bright, clear, and famous. From French and Latin origins it can also be described as “fair-colored”. Rosalind named Clayre after her mother.
Rory Lannister
Born: xxxAC in ????
Looks: Rory has golden auburn hair that he wears long and wavy curls. His eyes are wolf-like with a wildfire-green color. His hair could be called golden copper, golden red, or similar descriptions. Rory’s hair is primarily auburn red with natural golden highlights that are subtle in most lights. He generally is clean-shaven and is well regarded as handsome though his eyes are commonly thought to be striking and full of burning hunger. (Long hair reference, younger Rory somewhat, wildfire color reference albeit not glowing)
Name: Rory’s name is Irish and means “red king”, derived from the High King of Ireland in the 1100s who fought against Anglo-Norman invaders. It is similar to Rodrik, Roderick, Rogar, etc.

Name: Marius is comprised of a few naming elements. One aspect is from “Maria” which means “a drop of the sea” and another is Mars being the Roman god of war leading to a meaning like “sea wars, or warrior of the sea”. From Latin Marino / Marinus there’s a general relation to the ocean or sea.

BACKGROUND / BIO
The universe stacked all its cards in favor of Delaina Bishop. Like a picturesque scene from a storybook, her childhood years were stained golden with sunshine and happiness. The only child to Keith and Joanna Bishop, a high school principal and a realtor respectively, Delaina grew up within the confines of a white-picket fenced backyard, playing with the family’s golden retriever Marshall until the sunset. Attention and opportunity and the status of being a big fish in a little pond left her unwanting, a future beyond Merrock awaiting her if she didn’t want to stay inside her cozy bubble. She was unaware she’d even take those simple, afterthoughts-yet-crucial things for granted until they were grated away.
Life was kind up until it wasn’t; at age eleven, the age of lipstick and mascara and boys becoming cute, Keith’s years-long affair revealed itself in a gloriously heinous way. So heinous, in fact, that the scandal born from it stuck to Delaina like it was her own and never went away. A public affair and a scandal that in a small town, would catch wildfire ruined the Bishop’s reputations, released Keith from his job and forced him to find a new career, and followed Delaina to school. Kids were cruel, and just from being her father’s daughter stamped her as a social pariah. The school years were lonely as cliques formed and hierarchies established, Delaina left to the side. The childhood rumors eventually found company with new ones and she grew defeated at the game everyone else seemingly knew how to play. Her resentment for her father grew from a small seed to an overrun garden, tangled with weeds and thorns and an estranged relationship that only saw more distance after Joanna filed for divorce.
Delaina tried to fix her sights on the light at the end of the tunnel: the promise of a graduation, going to college and leaving her years in Merrock six feet under in a box no one would ever bother opening. She used softball season to pull through monotonous year after year, the one thing she knew she was good at and the one thing people were willing to acknowledge what she could do as opposed to who she was and who she happened to be related to. It got her through middle and high school until she finally walked across the stage. Money remained tight in the Bishop household, and with dreams of getting far beyond her childhood hometown, Delaina decided to stick out another four years in Maine to attend the local community college and obtain her bachelor’s degree in communications.
The sun began to peer out from behind the clouds; a giant media company in New York City offered her an assistant’s position on a Tuesday and she had left Merrock in her dust by Friday. New York was equated to heaven for Delaina; able to spread her wings, live unapologetically, shed the weight that had seemingly curved her spine during the duration of her adolescence. The only plan she had was to never look back. Everything else was a blank slate and the thought seduced her. It grabbed her by the hand and told her to run, so she did. She ran until she hit a brick wall, eight months after moving to the city when her department underwent budget cuts and she was kindly let go. She scouted for a bright side and tried to find something new, something equally fulfilling or, at the very least, something that would keep her in the city. The sand in her hourglass ran out and her money began to dry up, so Delaina begrudgingly finished out her lease and came back to Merrock with her tail between her legs.
Defeatism began to consume her once again, and she forced herself to take a long look in the mirror and attempt to make the most of her situation. She refused to succumb to echoes of ghosts from her teen years, especially after having a taste of the barefaced joy she’d found in New York. Delaina began offering piano lessons in town, eventually expanding to whatever musical needs others had. Coupling this with a gig at Bookends, Delaina is continuing her pursuit of happiness in a quieter, more peaceful life, even if trouble likes to call her and catch up every once in a while.

guys I just want to show off ALL my gorgeous song-lyric lineages I’ve been steadfastly building on Dragon Cave over the last couple of years, see under the cut for virtual dragons in nice colour combinations and with their names making song lyrics
okay you gotta read these top-to-bottom and right-to-left bc that’s how Dragon Cave lineage pages work
here’s the first one I did - nice and quick and easy because Amarillo by Gorillaz is such a damn short song (in a ‘staircase’ style lineage) - ignore the green dudes at the beginning lol. it’s Geode and Moonstone dragons
then I did my first proper ‘even gen’ lineage with another song with ridiculously short lyrics, the excellent Billabong Valley by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and Yellowcrowned and Turpentine dragons. this is the only even-gen where I’ve managed to fit the whole lyrics into only 4 generations, the rest are 5 gen
next was Epitaph by King Crimson with Black and Striped dragons, you can see that Stripeds take on the colour of the other parent so past the first gen they’re black Stripeds rather than white, and also I did this as a mirror-image wrt to the patterns of where the breeds are rather than each gender always being the same breed... a bit over-complicated and the colours aren’t really that satisfying but whatever
now these are lovely colours. Glaucous and Morpho drakes with the lyrics to the equally beautiful song Revere Reach by William D Drake (see what I did there?), which satisfyingly were also the exact right length for it to work
at some point I started another staircase lineage with just the first verse of Under Ice by Kate Bush with Ice and Azure Glacewing dragons. it’s nearly finished I’m just waiting for the final pair to produce a (much, much rarer) Ice egg instead of the Azure you see at the end there. this one has been going for over a year lol
this next one vexes me for two reasons, most of all i actually hate the colour combination, and also the lyrics were just slightly too long to fit so it’s missing the last 2 lines. but at the time I was so obsessed with Solar Waltz by Cosmo Sheldrake that I was determined, and I wanted to pick dragon breeds which fit the themes of the song so Sunrise and Terrae it was
we return to glorious, ethereal, beautiful form with these Carina dragons forming part of Cosmia by Joanna Newsom (it’s Joanna Newsom, man, the full lyrics are hundreds of words). Carinas are a hybrid breed from Ridgewing and Nebula dragons, and both of those breeds have two colour forms, so, well, you can see what I’ve done with the first gen :D and then the rest is all Carinas because the males and females are slightly different colours anyway and they’re beautiful
finally I’m gonna give y’all little previews of two of my in-progress lineages, which happen to BOTH be Kate Bush lyrics again cus I love her. (I have a third one but it’s a double-staircase structure which doesn’t make any sense until it’s complete lol)
this is the top half of The Dreaming by Kate Bush, with Daydream and Pink dragons forming a lovely pastel palette I’m very pleased with. (sadly, the last dragon’s planned mate doesn’t exist yet, because her father is just an egg so far XD)
and this is the top quarter of Sunset by Kate Bush, with, of course, Sunset and Lihnsehyre dragons, also fucking gorgeous!
i put a lot of planning into these, I find it a really fun and satisfying little hobby :D I’ve been using Dragon Cave on and off since I was 13 so I know my way around by now! I can’t recommend it highly enough, it’s the most relaxed and low-maintenance adoptables website I know of and you can do cool shit like this if you want!
I also have a bit of an obsession with Prize dragons, I trade for the offspring of other people’s (can’t get the original ones unless you win a raffle!) and then mate them together to produce cool shit like this lineage (a double-staircase like one I’m trying to build at the moment, they take a fucking long time from scratch!)

Random fact: i recently discovered i have phoneme-color synesthesia (i prefer to call it that instead of grapheme-color because there are letters that are the same in the cyrilic and the english alphabet but i pronounce them differently so they get a diff color) and i also have a color for all numbers except 1 and 8 for some reason. i spent my entire life thinking that ‘l’ is universally yellow. who knew!
Describe your aesthetic: ohhh, i connect with so many different things which is why my blog is a visual mess... but let’s see how many i can name... empty playgrounds, abandoned buildings, castle interiors, high schools, victorian era, north american suburbs and eastern european panel buildings, everything 80s, SUNLIGHT, meadows and fields, girls playing electric guitars, men laying their heads in the laps of their lovers in anguish and pain (...yes i’m a weirdo), dead languages and interesting symbols, witches and pagan imagery, girls in love, greenhouses and botanic gardens, electric posts, graveyards, avant-garde fashion,arthouse cinema, lockets and meaningful trinkets, pinks and purples and soft orange, cul-de-sacs, tarot cards, fairy tales, lace and silk, monstrosity, letters, pixel art, clouds and sunsets, roller skating, summer... wow lots of melancholy here! i’m v attached to my blog because i can cram nearly everything i find beautiful in it :) i think it’s a quite accurate representation of my tastes and inner world tbh. (writing this down really made me realize that beauty is my biggest weakness...)

So Stef and Lena clearly foster another kid and I think he goes to the wedding too. Wouldn’t he not be allowed to go out of the country as a foster kid? Do you think they adopted him since the wedding is taking place a year from the finale?
That’s a really good question. I know that to take them out of the state I would need permission, not sure about going out of the country but they would need passports etc. The child they foster/adopt is black, he will be on the trip.

I feel you, especially after the lack of a love scene. I don’t think that they should be limited by censorship and by people who don’t want to write for their characters anymore. I am as curious as I am afraid of seeing Tyrell’s reaction towards Joanna’s death. I wonder if we’ll see it in the next episode because from what I’ve gathered it’s going to be intense. Tyrell’s definitely the vengeance type so he’s going to want to rain hell on the one responsible. Keeping his HPD in mind, I also have a bad feeling he’s going to somehow put the blame on Elliot’s plan and by extension Elliot :/
But a boy can dream, right? I would love for them to reconcile later on, or at least have Tyrell and Elliot-Elliot meet.
I know Martin’s vision is not the same as Sam’s about Tyrelliot’s relationship. It’s not like I ever expected this ship to happily ride off into the sunset buuut I’d like to believe Tyrell’s feelings for Elliot are more than just a fucking byproduct of his HPD (because, ya know, you can still fall in love while having a personality disorder) and just… idk.
Seeing Tyrell all hearteyes and soft and in love with Elliot has become such an integral part of his character and has been a really nice contrast from his otherwise highkey toxic masculinity. Tyrell’s unconditional love and devotion for Elliot used to leave me breathless but now I don’t know what to think anymore because I don’t know where his mental illness begins and takes over on this. We’ll see what the upcoming episodes have to offer, I guess.

3 Songs you Really Like..
if you are reading this, most likely you have been asked (sometimes multiple times on different accounts if you are the possessor of more than one), about three favorite songs. I think about 20-30% of users chose not to respond, but unless i recently added you, or you recently added me in the last week (and a few of you even here were not so lucky) you probably got this message. I just wanted to explain that this list of songs is insanely long. Joanna Gaines Faces Her ‘Biggest Challenge’: Can You Guess?

Joanna Gaines frequently finds herself in a position to make what’s old new again, recycling furniture, antique accessories, even whole houses. But in the latest “Fixer Upper: Behind the Design,” she has to work in the opposite direction: She has to make a brand-new house look old. Is that even possible?
In the episode titled “The Pahmiyer House,” we meet Dale and Nancy Pahmiyer, who have been looking for a house for ages, and can’t seem to find one that’s the right size and has a gorgeous sunset view. So Chip Gaines suggests they find a plot of land that has potential, and he will build their dream house from scratch.
The Pahmiyers are into this idea, and purchase an empty lot for $32,000. Then they spend $270,000 more to build a new home. But from there, they say they want to purge its shiny newness to look more cozy and have character.
That’s what almost stumps Joanna. “The biggest challenge on this project is creating an old-world feel in a brand-new build,” she says.

As she takes a crack at comfortable weathering, Joanna dishes out some excellent tips and tricks for giving all houses more character, regardless of their age. Take a gander!
‘Defer to her’
In his golden years, Dale is a wise man. When Joanna asks the couple about their design style, he says, gesturing toward his wife, “My style is her style. I defer to her.”
“That’s a good style,” Joanna says with a laugh, as Nancy starts talking about her penchant for a “European cottage.” The design process goes smoothly from there.
Have a clear definition of style
“European cottage” is rather vague, so Joanna runs a detailed description by the Pahmiyers: “European cottage style to me is light woods; it’s stucco accents. I also envision antique doors, aged beams, really cool dormers and flower boxes. It’s a really good style for families because it’s cozy and inviting.” It’s all good with Mr. and Mrs. P.
Divide and conquer the island
“Nothing says a kitchen built for entertaining like double kitchen islands,” says Joanna. “Splitting them up creates a direct walkway to the stove and the refrigerator without compromising the extra storage and countertop space of a large island.”

Make a special room for the grandkids
Nancy remembers a favorite aunt who had a special room just for her nieces and nephews, which made them want to visit her quite frequently. Since the Pahmiyers want their own grandchildren to come over often and feel welcome, they ask Joanna to design a room just for the kids. Joanna revels in this.
Eliminate the mess potential
Joanna notes that you need closed cabinets in a playroom to hide games and toys so it doesn’t feel messy.
“I don’t want this to be like you walk in and it feels like a day care,” she says. “I want it to be like you walk into this amazing space that’s pretty, not cluttery.”

So Joanna designs a book nook with a built-in bench along one wall, and lines that wall with horizontal, aged-look wood paneling. You realize quickly that the wall is both attractive and practical. If you’re going to be comfortable in a nook, you might lean against the wall, put your feet against it, maybe even accidentally kick it.
Bonus: The paneling won’t show marks like painted drywall would.
Create continuity throughout the house
Joanna notes that using the same colors throughout the house is not the only way to achieve continuity and flow.
“I’m going to anchor the living room and the kitchen with the same kind of wood,” she says, providing the rooms a lovely harmony.
Be on the lookout for ledgers
Whenever Joanna finds a big, weathered antique ledger at a flea market or estate sale, she snatches it up to be used later to add some cool design touches.
“One of my favorite things when I’m antiques shopping is these antique ledgers,” she says, fingering a fine example. “To me, it could be art. I tear out the pages, and get them framed and matted, and this is perfect for a gallery wall or in an entryway, or a living room where you want to keep things a little more muted, but really interesting. These ledger books are a really fun way to bring in some history, some character.”
In the end, the Pahmiyers are tickled pink by their new home—and Jo has proved that new construction can have old-world charm to spare.

an incredibly obscure pairing: joanna/rhaella
Joanna weaved through the mess Maegor’s Holdfast’s winding hallways, frantic to make it to her queen before the drawbridge was drawn up for the evening.
She knew the way to the chamber at the core of the castle better than the way to her new home in the Tower of the Hand. Her place, until recently, was with Rhaella. When Joanna reached the great oaken doors that led to her queen, she was met by three Kingsguard.
“I need to see her. I-”“The queen is not to be disturbed,” one white cloak blurted.“King’s orders,” chimed another.
Just as she was trying to catch her breath from the run to build up enough to argue back, a weak voice came from the chambers.
“Let her in.”
The White Cloaks hesitantly obeyed, and suddenly Joanna was greeted by the familiar scents of incense and cloves. Rhaella was perched on a velvet lounge, a silk nightdress embroidered with red dragons and flames swallowing up her small frame. As she ran to her side and the oaken doors shut, Rhaella made no notice of Joanna’s entrance. She instead continued to face the one window the holdfast’s grand chamber allowed, looking out upon the godswood as it became obscured by the growing darkness.
“Why are you letting them send me away?” Joanna tried not to scream. After years with her queen, having the Hand of the King as a husband had been her dream; she would never have to leave Rhaella’s side. That had been her intention, until her new husband told her she would have to return to their Westerlands home.
The queen refused to turn away from the window. “You know what they’ve been saying about you and Aerys.”
The accusation was a punch to Joanna’s stomach. “You don’t believe they. You couldn’t”
“Why shouldn’t I.”
“You know I would never, I… I could never… not to you.” Joanna’s emerald eyes were filling with hot tears. She tried to sit besides Rhaella, but her queen still refused to look her in the eye. But as the former Lady in Waiting reached out to run her finger’s through the Targarygen queen’s white hair, Rhaella’s face suddenly snapped towards her as her hand caught Joanna’s own. Purple bruises trailed up from the nape of her neck, punctuated by a larger green welt under her left eye. Her purple eyes were spilling tears down cheeks as her pale face flushed a deep red.
“It doesn’t matter if I believe you or not. No one else seems to,” Rhaella sobbed, “Aerys is furious with your husband, and with you. He’s certain that this rumor was started to sow seeds of disagreement with him and his Hand. They both agree that having you here, would be… a-”
“Distraction,” Joanna realized.
“I don’t want you to leave, but when Aerys gets angry like this, it’s so hard. I don’t know how much longer I can take this.”
“You can though, my queen,” Joanna said, gently kissing Rhaella’s bruises as she had so many times before. Her skin was familiar, and smelled even stronger of cloves than the chambers. It’s “you are the strongest woman I know.”
“I can’t do this without you here,” Rhaella said as she began to wind down from her sobbing.
“You must, for me.” Joanna took Rhaella’s hands in her own and looked into the deep purple eyes she had found herself lost in so many times. They were not bright lilac or lavender like most of her line, and Joanna took comfort in their dark shade of purple that reminded her of winter twilights on the Sunset Sea when she took trips to Lannisport as a girl. “Even if I must go, part of me will always be here with you. You can be strong.”
Rhaella’s lips were softer than her neck, and when Joanna pulled away and saw another tear fall from her queen’s swollen eye, she pushed it away with her thumb. Rhaella smiled.
It was past nightfall and the drawbridge was up. Joanna figured her new husband could stand one night without her. She may have a duty to her husband, but her queen came first.

A Discussion on Monogamy
this is a little mcspirk post beyond ditty (okay, i say little...) that happened because i’m a diehard mckirk shipper but beyond was so damn spones-y and i love mcspirk so ta da. it’s two chapters in--one focusing on jim freaking out that bones might leave him, the second a pwp mcspirk goodness, and there’s one chapter left to write. i swear i will write it soon, i swear to god.

this is the reason i’m so determined to finished a discussion on monogamy. because it’s the prequel to this long ass fic i have almost entirely planned out with some great whumpiness (esp on bones’s part), badass ladies, a guest appearance from jocelyn and joanna, and much more. the worst part is i haven’t written any storyboarding down for this... ha.
Make Me Alive
we move away from star trek but not away from karl urban. this is an Almost Human fic (and if you haven’t seen it, do because it’s only 13 episodes and greatly underappreciated--just make sure to watch it in production order, not airing order). i’m over 20k words into this one and i’m just finishing up the first of three acts. ha. it’s basically a shippy (jorian) season two featuring more danicas, vaughn’s return, and ANNA. i’m trying to explain all those plot holes we were left with because only one season and i’m about to introduce some new characters, my favorite being the medical examiner, reilly glover, who is genderqueer and epic. we have a couple more murders to solve and vaughn has yet to show his face, and let me tell you the resolution with vaughn is going to be so. damn. satisfying.

Lights in the Mountains (Gisola)
a long time ago i finished my first full original book. it was a grand total of fifty pages and i’d been fighting with it for about seven years. i then went to a writing workshop and came out with the courage to trash it finally. i spent the entire next day with a notebook trying to come up with a new story. i decided to pick out bits and pieces (settings, characters, storylines) from all the other stories i’d come up with over the years that i always loved and mash them together. this is the result. it’s about two cities who suddenly find themselves under attack from a monster from the mountains and two individuals who travel over the mountains to try and find a solution. instead they find out that everything they thought they knew was... well, not wrong, exactly, just... misconstrued. it’s an urban fantasy with polyamory, queerness, false gods and evil racist asshats, a small dragon-like creature who’s everyone’s lovable uncle, and a weird mix of technology and magic.
there is also a prequel planned for this story called Secrets in the Sea that features an asexual siren and i can’t really say more without going much more into detail about Lights in the Mountains.
Fallen
this is my baby. this started out as a book, and then it was a stage play, and now it’s a miniseries. this was inspired by a snapshot scene in a dream of an angel waking up to realize her wings are falling apart. in her grief she absolutely tears them to shreds herself. the imagery was so compelling i came up with an entire six episode story around it and that scene doesn’t happen until the last fifteen minutes of the last episode. the full story is about two very different women who survived the apocalypse and start to (unwillingly at first) gather a group of survivors with the sole purpose of trying to survive. (well, and for one of the women to exact revenge on a demon for the death of her little sister.) very much supernatural inspired (in case that wasn’t obvious...), but i like to think it’s better if only because there are queer characters, complicated moral issues (that angel ain’t so angelic and that demon ain’t so demonic), a lot more women (though, to be fair, they were all dudes until charlie bradbury died and i went on a rampage through my stories of WHY DOES THIS PERSON HAVE TO BE A DUDE? THEY DON’T. THEY’RE A LADY NOW. FUCK YOU), and an actual ending in sight.
The Dragon Princess (not the final title)
the dragon didn’t kidnap and eat the princess, the dragon /is/ the princess. and no one knows until izzy, a firework maker’s apprentice, is literally picked up into the air by said dragon princess. kind of a lesbian beauty and the beast story except the dragon/beast is sweet and ridiculously socially unprepared instead of a bit of a dick. there’s also a gaston-type villain, but he’s a Nice Guy (TM). i really don’t have much figured out beyond that for this story, but there you are.
No Man’s Frontier
this was a novel and then i realized i don’t know cowboy stories well enough so it’s now a movie where i’ll get some good experts to come in and help. this is one of those mixing two story types together things--dragons live in the western area of north america. the railway has died because of the dragons and people are moving back east. our asexual hero (yep, more asexual characters--you can expect a lot of them in my original stuff) meets a dragon who’s been outcast from it’s pack and injured and realizes maybe dragons aren’t all that bad after all. we have all the classic cowboy story elements including the chieftess of an american indian tribe, a grizzled old asshole cowboy, and of course--ending with a ride into the sunset. just this time it’s on a dragon instead of a horse.
The Children’s Circus
this is a television series that has some heroes elements in it. long ago in the 30s, 40s, there was an orphanage that was hit with lightning and all the children suddenly found they had powers. that same night the woman in charge of the orphanage disappeared so the oldest boy (who’d been out when the lightning hit and therefore didn’t get powers) found himself in charge but too young to work and still take care of the children. he decides the best way to keep all these children together and safe is to start a traveling freak show. fast forward to modern day.
a construction site’s found something odd and the police are called in. our two cop heroes investigate to find there’d been a mudslide on the site decades--almost a century--ago and somehow everything was perfectly preserved. everything being a freak show full of children. while they’re looking around, the children start moving. not only were they perfectly preserved--they’re still alive.
and that’s just episode one.
No Time
i’m not sure what this is going to be--book, movie, television, etc. this is a vonnegut inspired story so that alone should tell you a lot about the vibe at the very least. it takes place on a planet where the cloud cover is so heavy that there’s no night or day. there’s no way to measure time, so by all rights, there is no time. the planet is very peaceful and chill until one of our heroes who asks too many questions finds a way to send a small shuttle above the cloud cover and discovers there’s an entire universe out there. this leads to a complete societal meltdown.
Time Menders
this is a movie trilogy with elements of doctor who, firefly, terra nova (another fox network scifi series that ended too soon), and star wars. ...probably some of things as well, but those are the most obvious. ...i have no way to explain the plot of this story right now without way too many words, so i’ll just say there’s time travel, alternate universes, black holes, and slightly psychic children (in the manner of river tam).

Top Ten Films of 2016
10) Christine (Antonio Campos, 2016, UK/USA)
No starring female role this year left me feeling more satisfied yet exhausted, sympathetic and contemptuous, annoyed and amused. Christine is Rebecca Hall’s greatest work and my favorite female performance of the year. There’s a reason she specifically won the ‘Courage in Acting’ award at this year’s Women Film Critics Circle. You’ll see why, and she’s fantastic.
9) Jackie (Pablo Larraín, 2016, Chile/France)
There’s something a bit “off” about a lot of Larraín’s latest and Jackie is all the more stronger and memorable for it. It’s that wiggle room that’s most intriguing, between historical accuracy and artistic liberty, public record and private pain, and performance of all kinds: for reporters, for a grieving nation, for us here to covet an icon’s account of Camelot. Imagined histories rarely feel this authentic.
8) Sunset Song (Terence Davies, 2015, UK/Luxembourg)
Possibly Davies’ most dismal work to date (but wait, his Emily Dickinson biopic is on its way). Yet it still fills me with his signature warmth and light, no matter how temporary Sunset Song demonstrates that state of happiness and fulfillment to really be. Even as the horrific shadow of war stretches across his canvas, he still holds his faith in our ability to endure.
7) Ovarian Psycos (Joanna Sokolowski & Kate Trumbull-LaValle, 2016, USA)
Community. Culture. Awareness. Mobilization. Solidarity. All meaningless buzzwords I loathe but that the documentary Ovarian Psycos made me believe in again, showing each of these talking points translated into concrete action. This stellar example put forth by an organized all-girl Latina bike “gang” watching over their Boyle Heights neighborhood—and more importantly each other—is truly motivating.
6) American Honey (Andrea Arnold, 2016, UK/USA)
I just can’t get enough of Arnold’s keen eye for the rough and the poor. Her cinematography is consistently astounding, and here all the more amplified by her foreign, idyllic take on America through the eyes of a lovestruck runaway teenager. A movie shamelessly flooding late-afternoon vistas from an open-top convertible with Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You” is a movie after my own adolescent heart.
5) Neon Bull (Gabriel Mascaro, 2015, Brazil/Uruguay)
Mesmerizing with its visual repetition and sounds, striking in the knee-jerk assumptions about a rugged Brazilian vaqueiro it shatters. Iremar’s hands and manner are coarse, but the garments he designs in his free time are delicate and refined. And my god, is he sexy. Neon Bull is really an extraordinary testament to the power of dreams, and how vital it is to nourish them amidst such a barren present.
4) Elle (Paul Verhoeven, 2016, France/Germany)
Utterly and wonderfully preposterous, and a formidable contender for comedy of the year. Yes, this is quite possibly Isabelle Huppert’s finest hour, and good luck trying to convince me Elle is anything more than Verhoeven simply toying with the dexterity and delicious poise of his muse. He takes everything we love about her, cranks it way up, and lets us have it. You should be grateful.
3) Toni Erdmann (Maren Ade, 2016, Germany)
In hindsight, I am so thankful Toni Erdmann took up the majority of my election night. I probably won’t laugh like that at a movie for some time, and it’s a reminder to try and not take this (or myself) too seriously. Maren Ade is coming for our invisible, repressive socioeconomic barriers with a sledgehammer, and our clumsy, imperfect loved ones are out there in the verdurous world just waiting to embrace us.
2) Moonlight (Barry Jenkins, 2016, USA)
My favorite male performances of the year. All of them. Especially Ashton Sanders as the adolescent Chiron—the wounded heart of this remarkable story—whose every nervous twitch was just too much to bear. Rare is the collective and collaborative talent that can make one line of softly spoken dialogue work as a resounding climax so perfectly. What a rare, beautiful film.
1) OJ: Made in America (Ezra Edelman, 2016, USA)
The most engrossing experience I had this year, and I couldn’t help devouring it all in two sittings on the edge of my seat. Edelman masterfully goes full macro and micro on so many of our nation’s awful, repeated contradictions, all through the truly bizarre exception that is OJ Simpson. The often logic-defying symbiosis of race and celebrity in America is infinitely fascinating. Footage of an LA officer’s horse spooked by the verdict’s unanimous and piercing hurrah is still haunting me.
