I’m currently rewatching In the Flesh and everyone please look at the last shot of series 1 (episode 3) where Kieren steps away from Rick's grave. (There is another/actual last shot of dirt being thrown onto the coffin while the credits roll but this is proper last shot and also the last of our dear partially deceased protagonist.) And I just LOVE THIS SHOT SO MUCH because it fully embodies Kieren's arc throughout the season.
The way we see him stand up in this shot on the one hand of course invokes his undead nature again - through the way it is framed he rises from the grave here. Which he did do literally of course, so it's a very nice touch.
But it also symbolizes his figurative return from the dead. He chooses to step away from the grave, to rise from the dead. He chooses to step away from Rick’s grave in particular, rather than follow him into it. Kieren originally died from committing suicide after Rick died, and now Rick is dead again. But this time Kieren stays. He does not follow Rick into death but chooses to continue to live again, to come back to life, and this shot captures it so well. The grave does not just symbolize the actual undead rising but more importantly Kieren’s choice not to succumb to death beckoning, to his depression and suicidal thoughts. He lets Rick go, he lets death go, learning to find something else to live for. Kieren has risen from the grave (depression) and continues to step away from it. And it’s the last shot of the season, perfectly encapsulating the entire season’s character arc for him. Chef’s kiss
