Inkember Day 30: Katriego (Time)
Naturally, I drew a ship involving my player character. What better ship to draw than one involving someone from the 19th century and someone from the 21st century?
And that's a wrap for Inkember 2023!

Dear Gus & Magnus,
Thirteen years ago, while Stanis was visiting me in New Orleans, I told him about a video I had seen about the Six Flags that got abandoned after Hurricane Katrina. We decided to go out there to explore the grounds. The place was as eerie as it seemed in that video. We walked all over it and I wanted a souvenir, so we pulled down the menu sign from one of the cafes. I've been storing it in Nene's attic for 13 years and finally pulled it down when I was up there getting down her Christmas decorations the other day.
I worried Mom wouldn't like it and wouldn't hang it up, but she cleaned it up and put it in the kitchen today, which I'm stoked about.
I also took a large, graffitied map from the log ride that I thought would make a cool piece of art, but it hasn't fared as well.
Grandpa & Tutu flew back into town this afternoon. Mom will go with them in the morning to meet the inspector at the house they made an offer on.
Dad.

Sometimes reality TV could get a little too real.
Case in point: Katrina L. Weems, who was charged last week with nine counts of illegally using food stamps and money laundering. Java'la C. Elam was charged in the same case with one felony count of illegally trafficking food stamps.
The women first publicly talked about how they bought or sold food stamps last year on "Judy Justice," a television show where Judy Sheindlin, a former family court judge in Manhattan, presides over a TV courtroom and arbitrates disputes. Earlier Sheindlin had starred in the long-running "Judge Judy" daytime show.
The episode with Weems, 41, and Elams, 25, started with the women seeking to resolve a dispute over the sale of a used 2005 Toyota Camry.
Instead, however, much of the episode dealt with the women talking about about selling and buying foods stamps, according to a transcript of the show that is quoted in the criminal complaint filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court.
"It sounded like a scam," the transcript quotes Sheindlin saying after the women discussed their food stamp dealings.
"I wonder if both those women realize that they just admitted in court to committing a felony," Sheindlin's TV law clerk, who is not identified by name, is quoted as saying. "I heard that they were exchanging food stamps for money, for cash for other things."
The clerk said she looked up Wisconsin law during the program and "sure enough, if you transfer or sell (food stamps) for money, something other than food, that's a ... felony."
Weems and Elam, who could not be reached for comment, were charged in Milwaukee County following an investigation by the state Department of Health Services, Office of the Inspector General.
Investigators discovered that "Weems financed the purchase of several people's FoodShare benefits and laundered those benefits by using those illegally acquired proceeds herself," the complaint filed by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office states.
In addition, the complaint charged that "Elam trafficked her own benefits by selling them to multiple people."
Last year, the Wisconsin Law Journal saw the show on the Amazon streaming service and reported that "during the case’s opening, as the parties described their relationship, Weems admitted to purchasing unused food stamps from Elam ($50 for $100 worth of stamps). Weems, a business owner, indicated she would give them away to those she knew in need."
The legal magazine noted that purchasing or transferring food stamps is a felony.
The criminal complaint liberally quotes a transcript of Sheindlin's TV show that aired last year.
"Elam testified that she sold her FoodShare benefits to Ms. Weems for cash and they both admitted that Ms. Weems buys FoodShare EBT cards from several individuals," the complaint states, referring to the Electronic Benefits Transfer system. FoodShare refers to the Wisconsin food stamp program.
The transcript quotes Elam talking about food stamps when she was telling Sheindlin about how she met Weems.
Weems "runs a daycare and my best friend's cousin goes to her daycare and Ms. Weems was buying stamps," Elam told the judge.
Sheindlin quickly asked "buying what?"
Elam said Weems was buying food stamps "from everybody, me included."
Elam told the judge she receives food stamps but "I don't have a fam -- I have a daughter yes, but I put food in the home."
Sheindlin's curiosity was clearly aroused.
"I'm just trying to understand, " Sheindlin said. "How much does she pay you for the food stamps?"
"If I was to sell her $100 in stamps, she'll give me $50," Elam responded.
Elam told the judge that Weems would purchase stamps from other people also.
Sheindlin then focused her attention on Weems.
"And what do you do with them, Miss Weems?" the judge asked.
"I actually buy food," Weems said. "I give them away. I'm just a person that helps everybody."
Weems added that "I just buy them because they would need the money. So, I buy a lot of food. I have a surplus of food."
According to the transcript, Weems seemed to say she would sell the stamps for half their face value, although she told Sheindlin that "I never sell them."
When Sheindlin asked her how she finances her purchases, Weems told the judge, "I make about $15,000 a month. I own a tax office as well as a daycare."
Sheindlin was unimpressed with Weems' defense of the food stamp transactions.
"Irrespective of the fact that the defendant says 'I give it away. I use it,'" Sheindlin said. "But I pay for it. ... Some programs that are meant to really help people and it's just too bad that some people will always stoop to the level of abusing a program that was really meant to help people who really couldn't afford to buy food."
Weems was charged with five felonies and four misdemeanors, including money laundering and unauthorized use of food stamps. Elam was charged with trafficking food stamps, a felony.

Week 7: Hard Boiled & Ju Dou- Yanissa Agbigay
For week 7, I chose the films Hard Boiled and Ju Dou. Both films are international and Asia films. The first film we will be discussing is Ju Dou, to recap Ju Dou is the brutal and sad story of a women’s reality in rural China. It is one of the most remarkable. After the film was released, it was followed by Raised the Red Latterm and The Story of Qui Ju. All these films were highly acclaimed internationally and are great pieces of cinematic expression. Not to mention, that Ju Dou was nominated for many different awards. To name a few they are, Best Foreign Feature Film and Best Foreign Language Film (nominated).
Also within the same year release of 1991, NASA launches the STS-44 mission in November. The Space Shuttle Atlantis carried astronauts Frederick Gregory, Terence Henricks, James Voss, F. Story Musgrave, Mario Runco, Jr., and Thomas Hennen. It was a Department of Defense mission that had the primary objective of deploying a Defense Support Program satellite. The payload also included several experiments. It concluded after nearly 7 days in space.
Both films are similar, but a key difference is that it is a Chinese film that is based on rural China and not an action film like Hard Boiled. This film specifically was banned for a few years in China, but the ban has since been lifted. The Chinese government gave permission for its viewing in July 1992. Although Ju Dou has had its share of controversy, many viewers turn the other way and disagree. Some admit that it is dark but also find it enjoyable to watch.
My second film is titled, Hard Boiled directed by John Woo is my first choice of film for this week. The storyline is about A cop who loses his partner in a shoot-out with gun smugglers and goes on a mission to catch them. In order to get closer to the leaders of the ring he joins forces with an undercover cop who's working as a gangster hitman. They use all means of excessive force to find them. The film was John Woo's last Hong Kong film before his transition to Hollywood. Hard Boiled was released in Hong Kong in 1992 to a generally positive audience reception, but was not as commercially successful as Woo's previous films such as A Better Tomorrow and The Killer. Reception from Western critics was much more positive, with many critics and film scholars describing its action scenes as being among the best ever filmed.
When filming Hard Boiled, more than two hundred guns were used, all of which were real. The film stars Chow Yun-Fat as Tequila, who is a veteran Hong Kong Police Force Inspector who takes on a crime syndicate that is smuggling arms through the city. Two Norico Type 54 pistols are used by Inspector Tequila. Alan who is played by Tony Leung also uses a firearm in the movie, but it is a different type. This new gun model is called the Davis P-3 pistol.
Within the same year Hard Boiled was released, Hurricane Andrew happened. Hurricane Andrew was a very powerful and destructive Category 5 Atlantic hurricane that struck the Bahamas, Florida, and Louisiana in August 1992. It is the most destructive hurricane to ever hit Florida in terms of structures damaged or destroyed and remained the costliest in financial terms until Hurricane Irma surpassed it 25 years later. Andrew was also the strongest landfalling hurricane in the United States in decades and the costliest hurricane to strike anywhere in the country until it was surpassed by Katrina in 2005.
All in all, I believe, another difference is that Hard Boiled isn’t based on a country about how women are being treated.

Woman Allegedly Defrauds SNAP Program of $69881
by Mary Spiller May 11, 2024 Mississippi woman Katrina Harris incorrectly reported her income and home composition to the government for SNAP assistance. A Mississippi woman recently turned herself in for intentionally defrauding a low-income federal food assistance program. Following a SNAP fraud investigation carried out by the Mississippi Department of Human Services’ Investigations Division, the Pike County woman, Katrina Harris, gave herself up to authorities.   Snap is the government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which aims to reduce poverty and food insecurity for low-income families by assisting families with their grocery budgets to allow them to continue to grow economically. The website’s description reads, “SNAP provides food benefits to low-income families to supplement their grocery budget so they can afford the nutritious food essential to health and well-being.”  According to the Mississippi Department of Human Services, received a total of $69,881.00 in SNAP benefits. She was able to do so by not accurately reporting her true household income or her actual family composition to the state when asked. Harris’ case was handed over to the Pike County District Attorney’s office after authorities found evidence hinting that fraud was taking place. The suspected fraud case was taken on by the district attorney, who was soon after granted an indictment for Harris on March 5, WLBT reports. The MDHS Investigations Division’s Agent Aaron Rushing headed the investigations.  Harris turned herself in to MDHS, the Mississippi Department of Human Services, and the Pike County law enforcement just three weeks after the indictment was granted on March 26. MDHS Inspector, General Sandra Griffith, called the case an excellent display of teamwork from the county’s law enforcement and resource teams. Griffith said, “This is a great example of collaboration between our investigations team, county offices, district attorneys, and local law enforcement.” Another official, MOHS Executive Director Bob Anderson, added, “This investigation demonstrates the strengthened controls we have in place to identify, investigate, and eliminate fraud in our programs.” Fraud relating to SNAP falls under the MDHS jurisdiction, particularly their branch that is “tasked with detecting, deterring and preventing fraud, waste, and abuse.” RELATE CONTENT: The Rundown On Eligibility For SNAP Benefits Changes In 2024 Source link via The Novum Times

So, I had essentially no idea what this movie was about going in - other than somehow knowing it was some sort of 'thriller' (I must have read that somewhere) and obviously that it starred Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi. ... And, honestly, I sort of preferred to keep it that way.
And I did, in fact, greatly enjoy it. It has a bit of a slow-burn release to the thriller, but when the realization hits ... man it hits. (I don't fully understand how it worked with the elevator, but maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention - will have to watch it again?) It might not be the Andhadhun level of dramatic-twist - in fact, the whole movie sort of relies on things being underplayed and just quietly appearing (aside from the fireworks and that loud ornament) - but it is still a fun twist that you're initially wondering "how?" (again, maybe I just needed to pay more attention to the elevator).
The ending - well, you figure at some point it'll happen in that sort of way; it sucks for the people involved, but for the viewers, I'm glad they didn't try to drag the movie on by having more denials and nonsense. The story reached its end, and it ended.
I also enjoyed the surprise appearances by Radhika Apte (as an important character to the backstory) and, for slightly longer roles, Sanjay Kapoor (as a typical married man looking to get lucky with someone else) and Vinay Pathak (as an inspector/detective).
For a man who has given us Johnny Gaddaar and Ek Hasina Thi and Andhadhun (and Agent Vinod, so he's not entirely above mistakes), this is just another notch in his hat. What a well-done movie. Even with the 'bigger name' star cast, they don't fall into the trap of trying to make it overly glitzy or glamorous. The focus here is on our story and our characters, and that is where it remains. And it is helped by it's great acting.
Things sorta occasionally zap back and forth in chronology, so you wonder what exactly is going on - but when it clicks, man does it click. What brilliance!
This sorta feels like a movie that underwhelmed for that exact reason of not being glitzy though - like, it reminds me of what happened with Raqeeb (smaller name cast, no glitz/glamour really) and then when the same story was presented as Race (all glitz/glamour and huge star cast).
I greatly enjoyed this movie, though - and will probably be watching it again soon (even knowing the twist). It's just a fun, peaceful ride - unusual for a thriller - that never tries to beat you over the head with drama or loudness.

Four Indicted - Money Laundering - Human Smuggling Network
Tumblr media
Texas News - Four Indicted for Money Laundering in Prolific Human Smuggling Network Takedown (STL.News) A federal grand jury in the Southern District of Texas has returned a superseding indictment charging four defendants with conspiracy to launder money. The new charges were filed against Erminia Serrano Piedra, aka Irma, aka Boss Lady, 32, of Elgin, Texas; Oscar Angel Monroy Alcibar, aka Pelon, 40, also of Elgin; Pedro Hairo Abrigo, 34, of Killeen, Texas; and Juan Diego Martinez-Rodriguez, aka Gavilan, 38, of Dale, Texas. As alleged in the superseding indictment, the defendants conspired to engage in financial transactions designed to conceal the nature, location, source, ownership, and control of ill-gotten proceeds of illicit human smuggling and the unlawful harboring and transportation of undocumented aliens.  The leaders of the organization allegedly recruited and used straw persons to accept human smuggling proceeds in their bank accounts and then transferred these proceeds to the leaders under the pretense of “work” payments for construction.  The defendants also allegedly used businesses and business accounts to transfer the human smuggling proceeds.  In addition, the defendants allegedly recruited individuals to accept human smuggling proceeds in the form of cash in exchange for checks from the recruited individuals’ business bank accounts. The superseding indictment also notices the criminal forfeiture of three properties with values currently estimated at approximately $2.275 million, $515,000, and $344,000, as well as money judgments amounting to at least $2,945,027. Three of the four defendants previously were charged with human smuggling in an indictment filed in the Southern District of Texas and unsealed on Sept. 13, 2022.  That indictment was the culmination of a significant enforcement operation to disrupt and dismantle an alleged prolific human smuggling organization operating in Texas and elsewhere.  That operation resulted in the arrests of 14 alleged human smugglers alleged to be members of a human smuggling organization led by Piedra that facilitated the unlawful transportation and movement of hundreds of migrants within the United States and harbored and concealed those migrants from law enforcement detection.  The migrants were citizens of Mexico, Guatemala, and Colombia, and they or their families allegedly paid members of the human smuggling organization to help them travel unlawfully to and within the United States.  According to the indictment, the human smuggling organization used drivers to pick up migrants near the U.S.-Mexico border and transport them into the interior of the United States, often harboring them at “stash houses” along the way in locations such as Laredo and Austin, Texas.  Drivers for the human smuggling organization allegedly hid migrants in suitcases placed in pickup trucks and crammed migrants in the back of tractor-trailers, covered beds of pickup trucks, repurposed water tankers, and wooden crates strapped to flatbed trailers.  These methods allegedly placed the migrants’ lives in danger because they were frequently held in confined spaces with little ventilation, which became overheated, and they were driven at high speeds with no vehicle safety devices. Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr. of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani for the Southern District of Texas, and Executive Associate Director Katrina W. Berger of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) made the announcement. HSI Laredo, along with Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) U.S. Border Patrol Laredo Sector and Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General (DHS-OIG), led the investigation and received substantial assistance from HSI offices in Austin, San Antonio, Waco, and Corpus Christi, Texas; HSI New Orleans; HSI Gulfport, Mississippi; HSI Mobile, Alabama; HSI West Palm Beach, Florida; HSI’s Human Smuggling Unit in Washington, D.C.; CBP’s National Targeting Center; the U.S. Marshals Service; Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations – Austin; and the Treasury Executive Office for Asset Forfeiture.  Police departments in Laredo, Killeen, Elgin, and Round Rock, Texas; the Wiggins, Mississippi Police Department; the Bogalusa, Louisiana Police Department; the Webb County Constable’s Office; the Webb County District Attorney’s Office; sheriffs’ offices in Webb, Bastrop, and Caldwell Counties in Texas; sheriffs’ offices in Harrison, George, and Stone Counties in Mississippi; the Mobile County, Alabama Sheriff’s Office; sheriffs’ offices in Jefferson and Washington Parishes in Louisiana; the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics; and the Louisiana State Police also provided substantial assistance. Trial Attorneys Christian Levesque and Angela Buckner of the Criminal Division’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section (HRSP), Trial Attorney Daria Andryushchenko of the Criminal Division’s Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section (MLARS), and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Day for the Southern District of Texas are prosecuting the case, with substantial assistance from MLARS Financial Investigator Kelly O’Mara, the Criminal Division’s Office of Enforcement Operations (OEO) Electronic Surveillance Unit (ESU), and ESU Acting Deputy Chief Jessica Reid. The indictments against these defendants were brought under Joint Task Force Alpha (JTFA).  Attorney General Merrick B. Garland created JFTA in June 2021 in partnership with DHS to strengthen the department’s overall efforts to combat these crimes based on the rise in prolific and dangerous smuggling emanating from Central America and impacting our border communities.  JTFA’s goal is to disrupt and dismantle those human smuggling and trafficking networks operating in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico, with a focus on networks that endanger, abuse, or exploit migrants, present national security risks, or engage in other types of transnational organized crime. Since its creation, JTFA has successfully increased coordination and collaboration between the Justice Department, DHS, and other interagency law enforcement participants, and with foreign law enforcement partners, including in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico; targeted those organizations who most significantly impact the United States; and coordinated significant smuggling indictments and extradition efforts in U.S. Attorneys’ Offices across the country.  To date, JTFA’s work has resulted in over 100 domestic and international arrests of leaders, organizers, and significant facilitators of human smuggling; several dozen convictions; significant jail sentences imposed; and substantial asset forfeiture.  JTFA is comprised of detailees from U.S. Attorneys’ Offices along the southwest border, including the Southern District of Texas, Western District of Texas, District of New Mexico, District of Arizona, and Southern District of California.  Numerous components of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division are part of JTFA, led by HRSP, and including the Office of Prosecutorial Development, Assistance, and Training, the Narcotic and Dangerous Drug Section, MLARS, OEO, the Office of International Affairs, and the Organized Crime and Gang Section.  JTFA is made possible by substantial law enforcement investment from DHS, FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and other partners. An indictment is merely an allegation.  All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. SOURCE: U.S. Department of Justice Read the full article

Morseverse Men
Volume of Angst Experienced vs. Poor Little Meow Meow Behaviour
Tumblr media
Notes [1]  Volume of Angst Experienced represents angst experienced while a given Morseverse Man is/was alive.  It excludes untimely and/or tragic deaths as it is not possible to observe their effect on girlboss/poor little meow meow (”plmm”) behaviour. [2]  Plmm behaviour is measured by how likely a given Morseverse Man is to react to sources of angst in his life in the manner a cat reacts to his food being delayed for 30 minutes. [3]  Estimates for Jim Strange and E. Morse are as of Endeavour Series 8.  Inspector Morse data is excluded from the analysis. [4]  Estimates for Robert “Robbie” Lewis and James Hathaway are as of Lewis Series 6. [5]  Blank template provided upon request.

Within the same year Hard Boiled was released,Hurrcane Andrew happened. Hurricane Andrew was a very powerful and destructive Category 5 Atlantic hurricane that struck the Bahamas, Florida, and Louisiana in August 1992. It is the most destructive hurricane to ever hit Florida in terms of structures damaged or destroyed, and remained the costliest in financial terms until Hurricane Irma surpassed it 25 years later. Andrew was also the strongest landfalling hurricane in the United States in decades and the costliest hurricane to strike anywhere in the country, until it was surpassed by Katrina in 2005.
