The significance of absence in storytelling
When does the absence of a supporting character take over a narrative? Or at least impact it massively?
Two clear examples from my fave fandom, the Morseverse:
Susan’s absence in Endeavour (we never see her barring the one imaginary sequence in the pilot) is so much more powerful and consequential than Susan Fallon’s appearance and subsequent death in Inspector Morse, even though the latter is played by the incomparable Joanna David
Val Lewis in Inspector Morse gets perhaps 90 seconds screen time, and as the wife of the sidekick, has zero impact beyond establishing her existence along with that of his family. Val Lewis’ headstone in Lewis gets perhaps 60 seconds on screen altogether, but her loss shapes so many undercurrents throughout that show
What do you feel? Look forward to more examples.

While openly talking about one's feelings is a fate worse than death, bagmen still require validation on a semi-regular basis to be their best and brightest selves!
To make sure your bagman does not start believing himself to be abandoned by God while you are not looking, consider periodically affirming how much he means to you (pro tip: putting a car in between can help ensure you do not endanger your hard-won English repression in the process!)

Sometimes I think about how proud Morse would be that:
a) Roger Allam has some opera training and is still a massive opera and classical fanboy
b) Kevin Whately's daughter Kitty is a professional opera/classical singer (and a v good one!)
I think he'd like both Shaun Evans and John Thaw too (and would be psyched that Thaw's second marriage was to a Quaker!), though he might be freaked out by how many serial killers Evans has played. But Allam and Whately, especially the latter? Oh that would make his *year*. :-)

there's something so subtly gut-wrenching about Hathaway not being a pianist. a musician and a genius in Oxbridge but he never plays piano. and you're left to wonder if it's for the reason you hope it isn't.

Bait! by wendymr
22,955 Words, James/Robbie, Rated T, No Archive Warnings Apply James intervenes in a homophobic attack outside the local gay pub, but gets assigned to go undercover when the city's LGBT festival is threatened attacks. Robbie's not about to let him go undercover alone, leading to growing affection and misunderstanding between the two—and one feather-boa bedecked karaoke rendition of YMCA.
Life's Sweetest Reward by MistressKat
10,969 Words, James/Robbie, Rated T, No Archive Warnings Apply Robbie and James go undercover when death threats cause havoc at the first Oxford Annual LGBT Singles Cruise. This fic has an enjoyable cast of OCs, and the perfect amount of danger, mutual pining, jealousy, and Robbie looking good in a silk shirt.
Pride by Sarren
4,559 Words, James/Robbie, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply In which Robbie takes to Pride and drinking beer at the local gay pub like a duck to water, and James proves increasingly oblivious of Robbie's signals. That is, until he catches sight of him at a local poetry slam—with another man as his date.
I've Found My Way by perclexed
1,082 Words, James/?, Rated E, No Archive Warnings Apply Months after the Phoenix Case, James returns to Sanctuary and purges the last remnants of poison from his soul with the gentleman eying him across the dance floor, and reclaims pieces of what he'd given up to a church he cannot fully reconcile with. Darkly beautiful, yet scorching hot and joyous at the same time.
Other Places, Other Times by dogpoet
5,782 Words, James/Robbie, Rated E, No Archive Warnings Apply Established Relationship. "They would have gone to gaol if they'd been caught together." Dressed as Holmes and Watson for Laura's holiday costume party, Robbie reflects on his relationship with James, while James gets caught up in the past.
At Last by asparagusmama
670 Words, James/Robbie, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply Established Relationship. One unbearably hot summer evening finds Robbie and James walking along the Cherwell to cool off, and Robbie finally gets to ask James a perfectly legal question.
Amor Vincit Omnia by Lindenharp
500 Words, James/Robbie, Rated T, No Archive Warnings Apply Established Relationship. Gay marriage is legalised across the US, and the news report teaches Robbie and James a few things about the dance moves that kids are getting up to these days. With a dash of Greek philosophy thrown in for good measure.
as someone long prepared for the occasion by blindbatalex
6,064 Words, James/Robbie, Rated T, No Archive Warnings Apply When their car breaks down in the rain, Robbie and James finally have that long overdue conversation. This does a great job capturing James' prickly defensiveness when talking about personal topics, and the image of Robbie marking up and memorizing his guidebook on supporting your LGBT child sergeant is one of my favorite things ever.
Phoenix Rising by lysanatt
1,276 Words, James/Robbie, Rated T, No Archive Warnings Apply They don't talk with each other in the aftermath of the Phoenix Case, but Hathaway thinks he's finally found the courage for honesty. I love this interpretation of the Yorkie Bar, and it's always a treat seeing Robbie be the one to make the first move in coming out.
I'll Continue To Continue (and pretend no longer) by elrhiarhodan
3,843 Words, James/Robbie, Not Rated, Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, Allusions to Past Underage Rape/Non-Con (Mortmaigne) "I am a gay man. I am a police officer. I am James Hathaway. Soft Lewis Prompts: both or either-
9. Shoulder kisses
36. Giggling during sex
Maybe established relationship??
Thx
Thank you so much for the prompts! I am always a sucker for some established relationship heheh, and while I’m happily mulling over scenarios for “giggling during sex” (quite possibly as an extension of this...) here is a little something (M-ish rated?) for “shoulder kisses” <3
[Soft prompts list is here if anyone else wants to suggest something 😊]
James trudges into the flat on Robbie’s heels, stripping off his hoodie as soon as the door is closed, and rolling his shoulders with a wince. His muscles ache, and the sweat he worked up while rowing has long-since cooled uncomfortably on his skin and clothes.
“You all right, pet?”
“Just sore.” James kneads ineffectually at his shoulder with one stiff hand before shaking it out and flexing his fingers with a frown. “I’m out of practice.”
“Looked good from where I was sitting.”
James gives Robbie a sceptical look and leans in to press a kiss to the corner of his mouth. “I love you, but your bias is showing, there were pensioners outpacing me.”
He gasps and twists away from Robbie’s playful pinch to his side, grinning unrepentantly. “No offence, sir.”
“Don’t ‘sir’ me, Inspector Hathaway.”
James’ smile softens as he turns back to kiss Robbie properly for a moment, before tearing himself away for a shower.
“Hang on.” Robbie reaches out to touch his wrist with a fingertip. “Sit down for a minute.”
James lets himself be gently manhandled into a dining chair, looking up at Robbie with pleased confusion when he lifts the hem of James’ shirt and pulls it over his head.
Before James can get any ideas, Robbie moves around behind him and begins massaging his shoulders with surprising vigour.
Even if he were inclined to try (and he is most certainly not), James doesn’t think he could contain the noises that start spilling out of him at the exquisite pressure of Robbie’s hands. His fingers feel like magic against his sensitive skin and overworked muscles, digging into every knot with agonising accuracy.
“Ah, fuck me.” James groans, letting his head fall forward and hearing Robbie chuckle above him.
“Maybe later, if you’re good.”
James groans again for an entirely different reason but can’t manage the effort to lift his head to shoot Robbie a dirty look.
Robbie finishes the massage with a soft sweep of both hands from James’ neck to the tips of his shoulders, bending over him to retrace the path of his hands with his mouth. James shudders at the feel of such feather-light kisses on his tingling skin, tilting his head to give Robbie more access to his neck.
“Feel any better?” Robbie murmurs near James’ ear.
James hums contentedly. “Much better, thank you. I didn’t know you were so good at that—you’re a dark horse, Robert Lewis.”
“And you’re going to be late for work if you don’t get a move on.” He comes around to pulls James out of the chair, standing in place so that James ends up pressed against his front, the fabric of Robbie’s shirt teasing his nipples rather pleasantly.
He rests his hands on Robbie’s hips, fingers hooking in his belt loops to tugging him even closer. “Not my fault, I had a very important physio appointment—I’m sure Innocent would support me looking after my health.”
“She’ll support you right out of that promotion, if you’re not careful.”
James walks backwards, pulling Robbie with him until he’s pinned against the wall, cupping Robbie’s his face in his hands, and drawing him into a slow and hungry kiss.
“Later?” James murmurs, reluctantly slipping away towards the bathroom to get ready.
Robbie smiles wickedly at him. “As I said, only if you’re good.”

Change my mind
(No seriously - change my mind. I've watched a few clips and Lewis and it looks SO dull, but if you love it, please tell me one episode that might change my mind.)
(Also I don't know if I can cope with watching that transphobe swan around - RIP Hathaway you're probably fine as a character but your actor SUCKS)
(Also god I love Robbie Lewis in Morse he's such a babe)

Ways to say I love you, morseverse detective partners edition:
Conversations had entirely via meaningful looks
When he knows what sandwich is for lunch based on the day of the week
Definitions of ecumenism and misplaced apostrophes you never used to notice before
Burying evidence
If he goes, you go (who else would understand you)
Running into fires to save your bagman
When he knows what day of the week it is based on the sandwich (thank God)
Sharing earbuds to listen to music
Too many lunches to count
Burying evidence, compromising everything you believe in edition (what choice do you have?) (it's him)
Draping your coat over him while he sleeps on your sofa
Saving him and saving him and saving him
When he should mind how he goes
Conversations had entirely via meaningful looks (and your boss is yelling at you)
A hand on his shoulder
Enlisting your daughter's help to find his stolen guitar
When he is too clever for his own good by half (and you wouldn't have it any other way)
The fondest of smiles you reserve only for him
When he is your governor
(When it hurts too much to say his name ever again)

I found Uccello's The Hunt in the Forest utterly thrilling irl. There's so much movement in it from the chaos of the hounds, and the hunters running and shouting. There's a sense of foreboding, or at least mystery, in amongst the dark trees off in the distance. And the colours! It's over five hundred years old but the hunters' jackets glow like rubies and the hounds are pale and luminous against the forest green, like ghost dogs. You stand in front of it and your heart thumps in your chest as if you were standing on the edge of that clearing, just feet away from all the noise and mayhem.
Also, we know the painting has almost magical powers to help fictional Oxford detectives solve crimes, though said detectives do have to sit squashed up against each other on a bench in order to get their inspiration ;-)
If you're ever in Oxford, go and see it (the painting that is, not the bench - tragically, when I visited, there was no bench).
