Trans woman prisoner no longer on hunger strike
Update 9/21/23: Jaina has been moved back to her old cell, with her friends. Thank you all who helped! The nature of this blog will change to allow for Jaina, Ashley, and Pharaoh to share their writing, but this post will remained tagged for a while longer.
Update 6/17/23: Jaina was moved to the unit with Ashley and Pharaoh. I understand that she has been eating. She's still not in the same pod as her people, which limits how much contact she can have with them, but we're considering this a win for now.
Thank you again to everyone who called! We still may have work ahead of us as we try to get Jaina moved back to her pod. Whatever happens, Jaina would like to continue sharing her experiences here, so there will continue to be updates.
Update as of 6/16/23 4pm PST:
I just got word that the superintendent has promised to move Jaina back to her unit if she starts eating. It's just a verbal promise, so we're cautiously optimistic, but we're about to head into a long weekend and if Jaina doesn't eat, she will probably get moved to a special offenders unit where she won't have any communication with anyone.
When I got off the call with Jaina, she was ready to start eating again.
While she's being moved to the same unit, it's not in the same "pod" as Ashley and Pharaoh. They'll be able to see each other in yard and (i think) the dayroom, though. After the investigation is officially over, then she will hopefully be moved to Ashley and Pharoah's pod.
This blog will continue to be here and update as things go. We may need help in the future. For now, if you can, please send Jaina a message or post card or letter.
Jaina would appreciate messages from folks! You can write her online, or via snail mail.
To connect online, use https://securustech.net/ and search for her DOC # 409738
To write her, address letters to:
Jaina Raelynn #409738, 191 Constantine Way, Aberdeen, WA 98520
A timeline of events.
[archived] Call to get her safely back to her support system!
Please read and be ready to call!
CW: suicide mention
Jaina Raelynn is a trans woman incarcerated at Stafford Creek Correctional Center in Washington state.  She has consistently experienced harassment from both staff and other inmates during her time there.  She depends on a support system of other trans, GNC, and ally inmates at the prison to keep her safe and sane.
Recently, an anonymous complaint was made against her and her closest friend in prison. While the complaint was investigated, she was moved to a unit where she was not able to depend on her support system.  For days, she was afraid to leave her cell, too anxious to eat, and only holding on because she knew the complaint was false and she had been told she would be moved back to her original unit when the investigation was done.
On Friday 6/9, Jaina was told to pack up her things because she was being moved, despite being told that the investigation had concluded, and the complaint was unfounded.  Feeling hopeless, she attempted to commit suicide immediately after.
Jaina is in stable condition but has begun a hunger strike and will continue until she is moved back to her unit.  Just any unit will not provide her with the safety she needs. Please understand that a hunger strike is very serious. She is at risk of permanent damage to her kidneys, and before long, they will force a feeding tube down her throat, which is torturous.
On Wednesday 6/14,Jaina asked that people call the prison on her behalf and ask for her to be moved back to her original unit.
Call (360) 537-1800
Superintendent Jason Bennett: dial option 3 then 6
Associate superintendent Karen Arnold dial option 3 then 5 then 1
The voicemail messages have the wrong name, but you are dialing the correct people.
You can say,
"Hello, my name is [name] and I am a community member who is concerned for the health and safety of Jaina Raelynn, doc # 409738.  I am aware that she is on a hunger strike and won't eat again until she knows she is moved to where she feels safe.  She needs to be moved to the same pod, with access to the same dayroom, as Ashley Raelynn (896177) and Pharaoh Grayson (807868). I do not believe she will be safe anywhere else."
Bennet and Arnold will try to tell you that they have moved Jaina for her safety, but Jaina is not safe, she is at risk of serious medical complications from the hunger strike.  They will say they treat all prisoners this way when a complaint is made against them (we have heard from other prisoners that this is not true).  They may lie and say that Jaina is not on hunger strike.  You don't need to try to argue with them. Chances are, they won't answer at all and you can leave a voicemail.
Use the hashtag #helpjaina to share when you call!

Tumblr media
"mmm, you sure you can handle this, sweetheart? you're biting your lip off." satoru murmurs softly, his hand is on your chin, his thumb running over your lower lip. although his words had a teasing tilt to it, you knew his question stood genuinely. and besides, when did your boyfriend ever stop his teasing?
it was no secret to you and the friends you shared with satoru that the man was a massive fan of the horror genre. whether it be horror games, movies, books, he liked them all. the both of you took a trip to tokyo joypolis, an indoor amusement park which also held the title as the biggest game center in japan. it is an arcade that seemingly spawned from the dreams of the most dedicated gamers in the world and as such, it holds a number of arcade games, from classic ones, to ones that seemed to be exclusive to them.
one of these exclusive ones is the video game immersion room. true to its name, it is a small room that in the inside, is a led screen from top to bottom. you will be given playstation controllers and navigate the video game of your choosing in 360 mode. from the front, to the left and right, to the back, the only thing you will see is the scenes of the video game, truly immersing you in it and making you will like you are the main character. the video game immersion room has been open for a few months now and has generated quite the buzz for obvious reasons. the chatter only intensified as they offered another handful of video games as an option this week -- one of which is OUTLAST, also known as one of satoru's favorite video game. horrifying at worst, and nightmare-inducing at best.
"i'll be fine, satoru. i've watched you play it a thousand times." you rolled your eyes, pulling away from his hold. truthfully, you were a little bit scared, but you knew it was only normal. after all, when you step foot into that dark box, you will be surrounded by mount massive inmates who all wish to harm you. because of that, you wished to persevere through it, after all, you didn't want satoru to miss out on this experience.
"if you say so~" he sang in a sing song voice, shrugging his broad shoulders up and down and walking towards the machine, stopping just by the entrance for you. "my baby first," his charming voice chimed, one hand gesturing to the entrance, the other holding the door open as if he was assisting you to a carriage that was transformed from a pumpkin that's about to lead you to a royal castle instead of a box containing nightmare-fuel.
once you were in, he followed suit and closed the door behind him silently.
the machine opened up with the creator's logo, before proceeding to the start screen. you chose to play one player so satoru would be the only one to play the game -- as per your request, although he would give an arm and a leg to see you play the game. he pressed a button on his controller that made the screen display the game select. it had an overwhelming amount of games to chose from, so much so that it had a search bar so the player would not need to bother to scroll through each of them if they already had something in mind.
once again, satoru turned to you. "you sure you're not getting cold feet, baby?"
you nodded at him, making a conscious effort to speak so your voice would not crack - if it did, you're sure satoru would chose another game instead - "i'm sure, 'toru." and with that reassurance, he typed out outlast on the search bar and pressed the confirm button.
satoru has played this game a handful of times to the point where playing on normal - the infamous game did not have an easy option available on their difficulty select - gets him bored, but since this was a much more up close and personal experience and the fact that you, his partner who did not handle horror the way he did was with him, it was what he chose anyway. if everywhere he looked, he saw the game, then even playing in normal mode, it would be anything but boring.
after that, the warning screen popped up.
outlast contains intense violence, gore, graphic sexual content, and strong language. please enjoy.
and it was then that the game officially started
you are miles upshur, an investigative reporter whose ambition is about to earn him an intimate tour of hell on earth. always willing to risk digging into the stories no other journalist would dare investigate, you will seek out the dark secret at the heart of mount massive asylum. stay alive for as long as you can, record everything. you are not a fighter; to navigate the horrors of mount massive and expose the truth, your only choices are to run, hide, or die.
it was familiar, the dark green screen that satoru clicked off of. and so was the dark terrain miles upshur was driving on. there wasn't much of a road, only a dirt path. it was surrounded by grass, and shrubs, and trees, and while most of the time, satoru would catch you being in awe of a scenery like this, in this horror game, it was much too dark and menacing to be anything that resembles comfort and peace. at the end of that dirt path is where your destination lies. there was a mount massive asylum sign that was impossible to miss, and a large open gate.
it was menacing, intimidating.
"amazing," you hear satoru breathe from beside you and although you were not as big a fan as he was of this game, it would be hard to disagree with him. the graphics were flawless, capturing even the texture of the folder you grabbed from the passenger seat which was flipped open.
you don't know me. have to make this quick. they might be monitoring
i did two weeks of software consult at murkoff psychiatric systems' facilities in mount massive. all sorts of nda's i am very much breaking right now but seriously, fuck those guys.
terrible things happening there. don't understand it. don't believe half the things i saw. doctors talking about dream therapy going too deep, finding something that had been waiting for them in the mountain. people being hurt and murkoff is making money.
it needs to be exposed.
with the backstory satoru knows by heart - and you have memorized because god knows how many times your boyfriend has played this with you - miles grabs his camera and gets out of the car.
your very first reminder of the one of a kind ambiance that this ride of sorts offers is when the gates to mount massive asylum closes by itself. if you were playing it in a regular playstation, a xbox, or your computer, you would hear it through your speaker and you'd have to turn your character to see it. but here, because of the advanced technologies that they have, you actually heard it from behind you and all you had to do to see the now-closed gates is to look across your shoulder.
it was loud, and even though it shouldn't have startled you anymore, it made you jump and grabbed hold of satoru's bicep since his hands were on the controller. the gesture made him chuckle and lean over his seat to kiss your cheek. "nothing to fear, baby. you're here with the strongest, after all." the tip of his nose traced from your jaw to the space before your ears so he could whisper to you, his warmth breath sending shivers down your spine though this was neither the time nor place for that. "i won't let silly ol chris walker kill you. not even the walrider."
fearlessly, satoru walked to the endlessly less intimidating gate, opening it before the game gave him the instructions on how to do so.
there were a number of military-style cars, cementing the fact that there was something serious happening in the asylum, but knowing that they were nothing of importance when it came to the gameplay itself, satoru paid them no mind. instead, he walked to the locked front doors of the asylum -- the both of you knew it was going to be locked, but he just felt like he had to do it, it was a part of the proper steps of leisurely playing this game -- the game is only available until a certain period in the story so it was pointless to do a speedrun anyway, that and how he wanted to savor this first time with you.
he walks over to the side of the asylum where the was another gate you could crawl through. from there, the closest point of entry to the actual building was a grey door, lit by a single lightbulb, but it's locked. the only way in was to parkour through the scaffolding into a room on the second floor. the moment you step foot in there though, the light immediately go out, forcing you to use the camera's night vision. it was helpful. you no longer saw darkness, you could make out the room now, the knocked over furniture and the paintings on the wall. aside from that advantage though, it cast the room in an eerie green light.
after that, satoru ventures into a messy room. he was busy looking for batteries, and you were absorbed too, looking at the screen closely to see if there were any batteries around. because of that, you jumped when the tv behind you suddenly turned on to static. "oh my god," you gasped out, clutching at your chest while your boyfriend laughed loudly at the adrenaline rush.
satoru exits the door when he's sure there were no more needed batteries in the room, and into a - thankfully - well-lit hallway. from what you know, it was there so the game could give you the instruction on how to squeeze through gaps. the real action would take place at the end of the hallway. there were doors on either side, yet the one on the left - a comfort room - closes on its own and leaves you no choice but to enter the one on the right.
it seemed to be a lot less menacing than the other rooms you were in at first glance. the two pepsi vending machines that sat against the wall across the door gave it a sense of familiarity, and for a second, you wondered whether you could press a button to interact with the thing; maybe satoru could press the triangle button on his controller and it would dispense an ice cold can of the beloved soda. that sense of familiarity and - somewhat - comfort quickly diminished when satoru began exploring the room though.
he started at the left hand side of the room. there was a sink there which looked clean enough, save for the "a-are those worms?".
"nah, intestines." your boyfriend corrected you, throwing an inappropriate-for-what-was-currently-happening grin at you.
he walked around the room some more, spotting some trashcans. he looked down at them, probably trying to see if there were any batteries he could pick up, but you only scoffed. "yeah sure, look at what they've disposed. who knows what goodies we can find there." you gasped exaggeratedly, "maybe we'll find some inmate fingers."
"silly baby, we won't find any of those in the trash, but there will be a lot of those in the future. i would know." he shot you a toothy grin before continuing to examine the room. "this looks fun." a smirk was on his face as he spotted a vent that was dripping blood, below it was a pool of the crimson, iron-y liquid.
"that's my idea of it." you sighed before satoru jumped up to crawl through the open gory vent "let's go then!".
satoru started going along the cramped space when he came across a vent guarded by horizontal steel grates that still looked into the room that you were just in. you heard some commotion coming from there so you could not help yourself from peeking.
there was someone, most likely an inmate of the asylum burst through the door and quickly exit. he did not say anything that hinted as to why he did what he did, whether he was looking for something, if he was looking for you.
you were just glad you got out of there in time.
for some reason unknown to you, satoru was humming a happy tune next to you, not at all scared or alarmed by the things that were happening. he was not experiencing any fear or nervousness that you were feeling that led to you forgetting the game sequences that you were usually familiar with.
he jumped off of the next open vent with a cheerful "and plop!", landing on the concrete floor flawlessly.
you ended up on a hallway with long large windows that looks into the abandoned front desk. it had a slight yellow tint to it and had an uncanny feel to it -- comparable to the backrooms.
next to you was a door which satoru did not hesitate to open, and again, without hesitation, you were greeted by a headless corpse making you and satoru scream. the only difference was that you screamed in fear, and satoru screamed in exhilaration. the sign next to the door stated that the pitch black room was the library, and the number of knocked over shelves and books left little room for doubt. along with that, there is also a number of dead bodies littered all over the floor as well as blood, some dried, and some fresh which made you wonder how long it was since the person wreaking havoc in this asylum was in the room that you were standing in right now. whether they just exited through the other door as you entered, if you would have met them if you entered just a few seconds early.
due to the amount of it, you couldn't avoid stepping into the blood, and your big boots started leaving vermilion colored footprints everywhere you walked. satoru was quiet, and the silence in the room led you to hear the squelch every time you took a step.
his face did not convey surprise when he spotted the hanging dead beheaded body, just a sparkle in his eye that always appeared when he was immersed in something he liked. he wordlessly weaved through the shelves, arranged maze-like, until he come across a man wearing heavy, bulky clothing. you recognized it as full body armor. he was clearly someone hired to get rid of whatever evil was haunting this asylum -- of whoever was trying to fight the evil. it is obvious that he failed though. this is seen in the way he was suspended in the air, from what you could only assume was a hook. there was a shelf standing behind him and it contained dozens upon dozens of heads, and behind that shelf is a tall window.
he's just between life and death when he gasps out at you.
"they killed us. they got out. the variants. you can't fight them. you have to hide... can unlock the main doors from security control." he helplessly tries to pull himself up from the hook and you wished your character had the option to help the man. he fails at that too and slumps as he accepts his fate. "you have to get the fuck out of this terrible place"
as you go back into the hallway, you couldn't help but steal a glance at your boyfriend to see how he would react to such a scene up close and personal. there was an awed smile on his face, then he catches your eye and the smile widens. "you scared yet baby? d'ya wanna sit down on my lap?"
you ignored his question, crossing your arms and sinking further into your chair. "just play the game."
he hummed at that quietly. "they did do a great job with this. the graphics are mwah!" he did a chef's kiss.
the hallway you were in was just as well-lit as the others. there were some potted plants as well, but they did little to breathe life into the place.
there were shelves along the hall too, the books you imagined that they once held scattered all over the ground. there were also a few doors, yet they were barricaded with wooden planks in an X shape, preventing entry. there were probably other ways to get in, but neither you nor your character would take the extra mile to do so.
you turned a corner and what met you was two wooden shelves pressed together. you could only squeeze through it, but in the middle of doing so, a large inmate grabs you. "little pig." he squealed and effortlessly throws you to the ground below, sending you crashing through the windows despite your best effort to struggle and get out of his grasp.
as expected, the screen goes dark and you hear an anxiety inducing humming. you dip in and out of consciousness a few times, then, the only thing in your field of vision is the dark rug covering the front desk floor and your arm.
you look up to see a bald man dressed as a priest holding a flashlight -- it seems like he's the source of the humming. the dark makeup? - was it makeup? you couldn't be sure what it was - around his eyes was a frightening contrast from his pale skin.
"and who are you, then?"
it goes dark again, and when you see him, he has your camcorder and he looks up into the heavens
"i.. i see. merciful god, you have sent me an apostle. guard your life son, you have a calling."
for one last time, the screen goes black and then the thank you for playing screen appears.
you unconsciously sigh in relief after that, knowing you would no longer encounter any jumpscares on the big screen, while satoru sighs in disappointment. "aww," he lets out, and when he turns to you, his pink lips are jutted out in a familiar pout he flashes at you whenever he wants something. knowing the man so well, you already knew what it was that he wanted.
"that was scary enough, 'toru. stop pouting." you commented.
in classic gojo satoru fashion, he only pouted more. "why don't you kiss it off then?"
bingo!
you figured that was what he wanted. after all, he was always so needy for physical affection.
you rolled yours eyes though in reality, you did not mind at all. "alright, c'mere." your murmured, cupping his face with your hands and softly pressing your lips against his.
as much as he was a horn dog at times - suguru and shoko frequently called him this with a scrunch of their noses whenever satoru would be very touchy with you - this type of kisses were his favorite. it never failed to make him melt and make him want more -- more than the things his clan would provide for him in a flash because of his spoiled tendencies.
"all better now?" you asked him when you pulled away, gazing lovingly at a pink-cheeked satoru, and rubbing your thumb over the soft skin of his cheeks.
"mhmm, yeah. might need some more if you want me to defend you from chris walker though."

A former Oregon Department of Corrections employee who worked as a nurse at Oregon’s only women’s prison has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for sexually assaulting nine inmates while on the job.
The man, 39-year-old Tony Daniel Klein of Clackamas County, Oregon, worked as a nurse from 2010 until January 2018 at the Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville, Oregon, when he abused his position of power and access to female inmates to engage in “nonconsensual sexual conduct with many female inmates entrusted to his care,” according to court documents per a statement released from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Oregon.
“In his position, Klein interacted with female inmates who either sought medical treatment or worked as orderlies in the prison’s medical unit, aided by his access to the women and his position of power as a corrections employee,” officials said.
Klein, who was often alone with his victims, would “manufacture reasons to get them alone in secluded areas such as medical rooms, janitor’s closets, or behind privacy curtains,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in their statement regarding the case. “Klein made it clear to his victims that he was in a position of power over them, and they would not be believed if they tried reporting his abuse. Fearing punishment if they fought back against or reported his conduct, most of Klein’s victims submitted to his unwanted advances or endured his assaults.”MORE: Girl Scout troop treasurer arrested for stealing over $12,000: Police
A federal grand jury in Portland returned an indictment on March 8, 2022, charging Klein with multiple civil rights crimes. On July 25, 2023, a federal jury in Portland found Klein “guilty of 17 counts of depriving his victims of their constitutional right not to be subjected to cruel and unusual punishment by sexual assault and four counts of perjury.”
Klein was ultimately sentenced to 360 months in federal prison and five years’ supervised release for his crimes on Tuesday.
“Today’s sentence sends a clear message that using a position of authority to prey on individuals in custody will never be tolerated by the Department of Justice. Holding Tony Klein accountable for his crimes would not have been possible without the courage and resolve of the women he abused and the dedication of our partners at the FBI and Civil Rights Division,” said Natalie Wight, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon.
Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division echoed Wight’s sentiments.
“The sentence in this case should send a significant message to any official working inside jails and prisons across our country, including those who provide medical care, that they will be held accountable when they sexually assault women inmates in their custody,” said Clarke. “Women detained inside jails and prisons should be able to turn to medical providers for care and not subjected to exploitation by those bent on abusing their power and position. We will listen to and investigate credible allegations put forward by people who are sexually assaulted and, where appropriate, bring federal prosecutions. The Justice Department stands ready to hold accountable those who abuse their authority by sexual assaulting people in their custody and under their care.”
The case against Klein was investigated by the FBI Portland Field Office and was prosecuted by Gavin W. Bruce, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, and Cameron A. Bell, Trial Attorney for the Civil Rights Division’s Criminal Section.
“We know this prison sentence cannot undo the trauma Tony Klein inflicted on numerous victims, but we hope this brings them one step closer to healing,” said Kieran L. Ramsey, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Portland Field Office. “As a state prison nurse, Klein abused his position and abused multiple women, violating the public’s trust, while doing everything he could to avoid being caught. The investigators and prosecutors should be applauded for their efforts to hold Klein accountable, but we recognize this lengthy sentence is also because of a group of brave women who came forward and helped ensure that Klein was held accountable for being a sexual predator within Coffee Creek Correctional Facility.”

[ad_1] SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom has ambitious and expensive plans for a dilapidated factory at San Quentin State Prison where inmates of one of the nation’s most notorious lockups once built furniture, and lawmakers have given him the greenlight to start with little input or oversight. He wants to spend $360 million demolishing the building and replacing it with one more reminiscent of a college campus, with a student union, classrooms and possibly a coffee shop. It’s part of his desire to make San Quentin, once home to the nation’s largest death row and where the state performed executions, a model for preparing people for life on the outside — a shift from the state’s decades-long focus on punishment. And Newsom wants it all to happen by December 2025, just before he leaves office.A 21-member advisory council Newsom selected to help shape the new facility’s design and programming does not have to follow open meetings laws, while the Legislature traded away seats on the council and formal oversight during budget negotiations. That’s a concern for supporters and critics of prison reform. Republican lawmakers say the Legislature needs more of a say in the process, especially when the state faces a nearly $32 billion budget deficit. Criminal justice advocates say reforming San Quentin is a distraction from the real goal of closing more prisons.“Spending hundreds of millions on new prison infrastructure is a step in the wrong direction,” said Brian Kaneda of CURB, a criminal justice reform coalition. “If there’s no public accessibility to the San Quentin advisory council meetings, that’s a really significant concern that I think people aren’t paying enough attention to.”After inquiries from The Associated Press, the governor's office said it will release the advisory council's report to the public before Newsom presents his next budget to lawmakers in January.“Since the very beginning of this process, the administration has engaged a diverse set of stakeholders and committed to transparently making the Advisory Council’s recommendations public. Our partners in the Legislature — along with stakeholders including victims, incarcerated individuals and their families, (The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation) staff, and program providers — are the linchpin to San Quentin’s success," Izzy Gardon, deputy director of communications for Newsom, said in a statement. The advisory council includes criminal justice reform advocates, San Quentin top brass and Newsom political allies like Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg. It has met at least five times since June, and it will give a preliminary report to the administration this September and a final report in December. The Democratic governor first announced his plans for remaking the prison — and renaming the facility located about 18 miles (29 kilometers) north of San Francisco the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center — in March. He said California would offer its own take on the Scandinavian prison model where cells look more like dorm rooms and inmates have access to activities and educational programs.Newsom in 2019 instituted a moratorium on executions, and the state has begun moving San Quentin’s remaining 700 death row inmates to other prisons. San Quentin is home to more than 3,600 inmates total.San Quentin already has some of the nation’s most innovative programs for inmates. In July, Newsom’s administration invited reporters to tour the prison, showcasing accredited college classes, a coding academy and the prison’s award-winning newsroom, among other programs. Many inmates said they’re excited for more programming spaces, but others remained skeptical.Juan Haines, an inmate at San Quentin for nearly three decades, said the governor’s efforts to shift the culture at San Quentin would only work if both inmates and prison guards are buying into the vision, he told reporters during the July media tour.Steinberg, one of the advisory council's leaders, said the group is tackling how to retrain correctional officers and improve inmates’ experience, among other issues. The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation started soliciting contractors to design the new campus before lawmakers approved the budget, and a firm has been hired with plans to start construction next year. Lawmakers waived the historic preservation requirement and an environmental impact review to speed up the project. The San Quentin campus would cost $360 million through a lease revenue bond. Lawmakers also agreed to another $20 million from the general fund for other smaller capital projects recommended by the council.Democratic lawmakers, who hold a supermajority in California, said they’re supportive of Newsom’s project. Approving it helped them score a different political victory. In exchange for approval, they added a provision to the budget giving them access to key data on the operational capacities of prisons across the state, which they say will help determine which to shut down. California has roughly 15,000 empty prison beds, a number that’s expected to grow.Assemblymember Phil Ting, a San Francisco Democrat who chairs the Assembly Budget Committee, said lawmakers have been promised more details on San Quentin but their goal is “to have a much larger discussion regarding the overall system ... not just on one prison.”Republican Assemblymember Tom Lackey, who sits on the budget subcommittee on public safety, said Newsom did not seek lawmakers' input.“We’re the oversight, supposedly,” Lackey said. “So how can you oversee something that has such minimal amount of communication?”Thanh Tran, who was imprisoned at San Quentin from 2018 to 2022, said the whole process was a “black hole” for the public. Tran, who now works for the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, said grassroots efforts to engage with lawmakers and the administration were ignored.“The governor has made his choice,” Tran said. “He has given this unfettered power to this advisory council that is allowed to meet in secret, and we are boxed out.”Newsom told reporters in August that there would be “formal” and “informal” engagement about the San Quentin project with the Legislature throughout the process, but the state needs to act with urgency.“I don’t have many summers left, I want to get it going,” he said. “People are counting on us. They’re waiting for us.”Lawmakers from both parties initially scoffed at the high price tag and rejected Newsom's plan. The Legislature’s nonpartisan advisors said it lacked details and called the 2025 deadline “unnecessary” and “problematic."The budget lawmakers passed contained provisions that would have allowed them to appoint at least two members to the advisory council, required the council to hold public meetings and mandated the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation provide them updates. Yet, days later, they gave Newsom the whole $380 million package — with all of the accountability provisions they wanted cut out.Ting defended the deal, saying the state won’t authorize the lease revenue bond for the project without “very, very detailed plans.” [ad_2]

The Last Day in Philadelphia: 3/15/23
Ben Lashaway
Our last day in Philadelphia was full of excitement, jubilation, and learning. We began our adventure-packed day at the National Constitution Center. We were able to see a 360 degree live theatrical production that informed us on the history of early Americans and their search of freedom by creating and improving the U.S Constitution. After this presentation we walked around the center that included a timeline of the origins of the constitution and how it changed. There was also voting stations designed for younger kids and statues of historical figures hat were important to the constitution. The National Constitution Center helped me admire and appreciate the sacrifice early Americans made in creating and sustaining freedom in our country.
The next part of our day was what I was most excited for: lunch time.  This was because we were headed back to the reading terminal market. I was astonished at all the amazing foods I saw there the day before and since then I had been planning my delicious meal for today. I had a Reuben from Hershel’s deli, root beer crafted in Philadelphia, and very overpriced peach ice cream from Bassets.
After lunch we walked to the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Science, seeing famous landmarks along the way. One of these was the LOVE SIGN. Apparently this sign is so romantic that we were able to spectate a couple getting married in front of the sign, in the cold, and with around six people in attendance. After the long walk, we got to explore Benjamin Franklin Institute of science. I walked in a very large model of a heart, learned about the brain, crushed Davis in a sprinting competition in the sport exhibit , and used knowledge I learned from the energy exhibit to electrocute my friends. I had a wonderful and insightful time here, but unfortunately it does not compete with the fantastic Science Spectrum we have in Lubbock.
Our last history tour of the entire trip was at the Eastern State Penitentiary. We had an amazing and intelligent tour guide that seemed to know the answer to every question .He guided us  through the penitentiary where we got to see the small and miserable jail cells. I got to observe the death penalty inmates’ living area, the art created by the prisoners in the cell, and the changes the penitentiary made going into the 20th century. This tour and the tour guide did a phenomenal job of not only showing us the history of this prison, but exposing the ineffectiveness of the prison system throughout American history and in the present time. The penitentiary was one of my favorite tours on the trip.
Because I have most likely made this an annoyingly long read, I will quickly sum up the rest of the day. We ate at Spasso Italian grill, carson got stuck in the elevator, and some of the students went to David and Buster’s. Today has added learning and excitement to an already magnificent trip.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.
And Newsom wants it all to happen by December 2025, just before he leaves office.
A 21-member advisory council Newsom selected to help shape the new facility’s design and programming does not have to follow open meetings laws, while the Legislature traded away seats on the council and formal oversight during budget negotiations.
That’s a concern for supporters and critics of prison reform. Republican lawmakers say the Legislature needs more of a say in the process, especially when the state faces a nearly $32 billion budget deficit. Criminal justice advocates say reforming San Quentin is a distraction from the real goal of closing more prisons.
“Spending hundreds of millions on new prison infrastructure is a step in the wrong direction,” said Brian Kaneda of CURB, a criminal justice reform coalition. “If there’s no public accessibility to the San Quentin advisory council meetings, that’s a really significant concern that I think people aren’t paying enough attention to.”
After inquiries from The Associated Press, the governor's office said it will release the advisory council's report to the public before Newsom presents his next budget to lawmakers in January.
“Since the very beginning of this process, the administration has engaged a diverse set of stakeholders and committed to transparently making the Advisory Council’s recommendations public.
He said California would offer its own take on the Scandinavian prison model where cells look more like dorm rooms and inmates have access to activities and educational programs.
Newsom in 2019 instituted a moratorium on executions, and the state has begun moving San Quentin’s remaining 700 death row inmates to other prisons. San Quentin is home to more than 3,600 inmates total.
San Quentin already has some of the nation’s most innovative programs for inmates. In July, Newsom’s administration invited reporters to tour the prison, showcasing accredited college classes, a coding academy and the prison’s award-winning newsroom, among other programs. Many inmates said they’re excited for more programming spaces, but others remained skeptical.
Juan Haines, an inmate at San Quentin for nearly three decades, said the governor’s efforts to shift the culture at San Quentin would only work if both inmates and prison guards are buying into the vision, he told reporters during the July media tour.
Steinberg, one of the advisory council's leaders, said the group is tackling how to retrain correctional officers and improve inmates’ experience, among other issues.
Lawmakers also agreed to another $20 million from the general fund for other smaller capital projects recommended by the council.
Democratic lawmakers, who hold a supermajority in California, said they’re supportive of Newsom’s project. Approving it helped them score a different political victory.
In exchange for approval, they added a provision to the budget giving them access to key data on the operational capacities of prisons across the state, which they say will help determine which to shut down. California has roughly 15,000 empty prison beds, a number that’s expected to grow.

Manhunt 2 ps2 review psp#
I could lead them back and forth between the same dark places I was hiding in and they still didn’t realise! Whilst hiding in shadows, you may occasionally have to press a button, as instructed, to make sure you stay undetected. Further playing showed that the right stick is merely used for the occasional looking left or right – even though the left one can do that if you’ve got your back against the wall, and the default for most games that allow you to run about an area is that the left stick controls movement whilst the right one allows you to look.īaddies aren’t very bright, either. It’s reasonably okay to move with the left one but you need to be able to turn so you can check an enemy walking past while you’re in the shadows so you can leap out at them. Manhunt 2: Level 2: Ghosts Turning round can be difficult as your guy just doesn’t seem to respond properly when looking with the right controller stick.
Manhunt 2 ps2 review Patch#
However, since the game’s on the PS2 the graphics are nowhere near as great as they could’ve been – as the footage shows – and while the original had sound in Dolby Digital 5.1, the PS2 can only manage Dolby Surround (it states ProLogic 2, but it’s not a patch on what DD5.1 or DTS could’ve done and DTS is certainly possible as GTA Vice City proved – and why they never used it in the San Andreas sequel, god only knows).
Manhunt 2 ps2 review series#
Sadly, there’s also a series of problems with the game and the one thing that kept me playing is the amusing voicework of the others in the game, such as when I could hear one of the “Watchdogs” chase after me, shouting, “Face… meet fist!” What to do now? Where to go? Anywhere but here, for sure!Īnd so begins the game as you make your way through the dank corridors, following a linear path as with the first game, but being able to kill and maim in whichever order you see fit. For some reason, a female doctor in a white coat falls to the floor in front of you, seemingly, dead at your hand via the contents of a syringe. Naturally, the powers that be want to stop you before you can tell the world about what they’ve been up to for the last six years. You play one of two surviving inmates, Daniel Lamb, and you’re on the run with the other one, Leo Kasper. The basic premise here is that things have gone very wrong at a secret research facility. In fact, the US have had this game for a whole year before we got it. Manhunt 2: Level 1: Awakenings Part 1 Still, it’s great to see it make it to these shores at all after the BBFC were complete arseholes about it for months on end.
Manhunt 2 ps2 review psp#
While I can understand the Wii, even if I don’t go for such energetic use of a controller myself, and it’s great to see some support for the PSP given that most developers appear to have abandoned it over the last year, the graphic gore would’ve been ripe for a release on the Xbox 360 and PS3, surely? I thoroughly enjoyed the original Manhunt on the Xbox, but I can’t fathom out why Rockstar have brought out the sequel only on the PS2, Wii and the PSP?
