Momo's unofficial Snapetober for 2023
I have had such a delightful time with Snapetober the last couple of years and wanted to celebrate Severus Snape again this October!
Since I haven’t seen an official list of prompts for 2023 just yet (if anyone does have an official list, please do let me know! I don't want to step on toes), I compiled a list from a few previous Snapetobers, Inktobers, etc. and then added in some other words that struck me as October-ish and/or autumnal and/or Snape-esque to challenge myself If anyone else would like to participate with my unofficial prompt list, that would be glorious and I’d be thrilled!  It is such a treat to see all sorts of new Snape art and thoughts and creativity and all the ways the Snapedom can have fun with a concept and theme.
As I understand from previous years, the Snapetober rules are that you can do any number of prompts you fancy, combine prompts (I will!), respond to prompts in any order and on your own schedule (Snapetober can last until March and beyond if that is the timetable that works best for you!), and/or use prompt lists from previous years and that entries can be anything you wish to create from fic (any length, format, point of view, pairing, alternate universe or canon, featuring any additional characters), art (in any style and any level of effort), head-canons, plot bunnies, mood-boards, ballads, etc. etc. just so long as it is focused on Severus Snape and it is yours (also, if you have older art that fits a prompt that you want to circulate upon the metaphorical refrigerator, I think that’s awesome and would love to see it!)
I expect this list is a bit more plant and animal themed (because that is where my brain resides most of the time) and I did gravitate towards words that tickle the tongue (if there are any words that don’t translate well or don’t quite make sense, I am happy to try to help clarify). I hope there is sufficient wiggle room in the prompts to be interpreted in any direction!

Binderary 2024
Binderary is once again almost upon us! For the folks at Renegade Bindery, February is a month where we focus on making books, similar to NaNoWriMo for writers and Inktober for artists.
This is my accountability post for Binderary 2024! Below are my preparations, my goals, and new techniques I’m going to try. Check it out under the cut:
My Preparations: - 7 finished typesets, quarto-letter sized. I’m also hoping to get these printed out and folded before February 1. - Lots of research on pamphlet binding! - A little bit of research on box making/cartonnage!
My Goals: - I want to bind each of these typesets in a different style of pamphlet binding. - The 7 typesets are documentation of my conversations with authors I’ve worked with over the past year. I want to archive these before the get lost in the morass of online stuff, because glancing at an author reaction to a book I’ve make is a great pick-me-up! Archiving includes making sure my posts and the author’s stories are in the Wayback Machine at Archive.org. - Someone suggested I made a box to keep these guys in, and I have not tried any box making yet. These should all end up roughly the same height and width, so they should all fit in one box! So one (1) box by the end of Binderary. - If I survive all of that, I have a typeset I received from the Renegade Typeset Exchange 2023 that I should get started on! We’ll consider this a stretch goal.
New Techniques: - I have several pamphlet binding techniques I want to try: 2 section pamphlet with cover, one sewing; stab binding (tortoise shell) with a Z-fold cover; button hole stich; concertina binding; stich pattern on the spine (which I believe is a variation on long stitch); conservation pamphlet for 2 sections and 3 sections. These are from both the Kevin A Smith books on glueless binding and also a couple of DAS videos. - I have not tried cartonnage at all! I do have a fairly simple process laid out in the book by the Hollanders (yes those Hollanders) “Introduction to Bookbinding and Custom Cases”. - If I make it that far, for my exchange typeset I want to try a cover with a cutout!
I will update at the end of February to let you know how it goes!

Flufftober 2023 Prompts (2)
Dystober 2023 Prompts
LBSC Smooch Roulette
As always, you can do as few or as many as you like, in whatever order you like, and here’s a little reminder of our attitude towards rules (tldr; do what inspires you, even if it breaks the rules)
You can join our LBSC Events discord server for encouragement and ideas (but this is totally optional in both directions - you don’t have to join to participate in the challenge, and you don’t have to participate in the challenge to join the server; you can join just for lukanette socializing, news on lbsc events, and general cheerleading), and if you have any questions you can leave a message in our ask box!
NSFW prompt fills are permitted as long as all characters are of age and it is appropriately tagged.

Inktober 2023 Day 25: Dangerous
Coven Gwen. Once upon a time, there a doll, beloved by a small boy. They went on all sorts of magical adventures together in the woods surrounding their quaint country home over the course of years. But one day, when he shared his doll with other kids in the village, they mocked him, saying that boys couldn’t play with dolls.
In frustration, spiked with grief and splattered with humiliation, he took out his anger on his doll, sewing her mouth shut and cutting her up with scissors before abandoning her in the woods.
This doll is eventually picked up by a wandering witch and brought to life by a coven. The coven repaired the doll with stitches of their own, but once alive, the doll never removed her mouth stitches. She saw them as a way to inspire fear in those who saw her and as a reminder of the ones who force us to repress ourselves and how she would seek vengeance on them. This now-living doll becomes Coven Gwen, a witch whose patron would have been the ancient goddess Naafiri (but I skipped the prompt for that day).

Inktober 2023 - Prompt 19: Plump
Tumblr media
"Oh, Reesina. If only you caught that burning sensation earlier and realized that lip plumper wasn't just a normal kind of lip gloss. But hey, it’s alright. We all make mistakes, and at least you’ll have a nice new look for your lips… if you wanted that, that is.”
Now, initially, I was pretty stumped when I first came upon this prompt. I know there are many ways to interpret the word “plump,” but I just couldn’t find anything that I really liked. However, one trip down memory lane later, and I’ve finally figured out what to do with this prompt.
It was a memory from Christmas Eve of 2022, where my aunt accidentally gave me lip plumper, mistaking it for lip gloss. She realized the mix-up not long after I put it on and felt a burning sensation of my lips. Luckily, I got it off before things got worse, and we ended up having a good laugh about it. The moment I remembered it, I knew it was the perfect source of inspiration for today’s prompt.
Since she seems like the most likely to end up in a situation like this, I choose my OC, Reesina, to be the one accidentally using the not-so-painless lip plumper. Although, unlike most, I don’t think she’s too freaked out about this. And hey, it does look pretty nice on her, after all… though the burning sensation? Definitely doesn’t feel as great as it looks.
Enjoy! 😊💜

Inktober 2023 Day 2 - Foxfire
Tumblr media
Foxfire is the colloquial name for the eerie glow of some types of luminescent fungi that grow on fallen trees in dark forests. From a distance, it looks like some sort of magical energy beckoning travelers off the safe path and into the darkness.
This has absolutely nothing to do with hypnosis.
But did you know that Dr. James Esdaile, a Scottish surgeon who practiced in India in the 1800s, used to perform painless surgeries on his native patients by using a technique that he thought "saturated the patient with his own nervous fluid" and caused "nervous energy" to gather in the area upon which he needed to operate? By his own account, his technique was neither the mesmerism nor animal magnetism that are generally considered the infant precursors of what we now think of as hypnosis; nonetheless, a deep state of trance wherein the hypnotee feels no outside physical stimulus is now often referred to as "the Esdaile State" in his honor.

INKTOBER 2023
1 - DREAM
Once upon a night, I was able to close my eyes and vision fantastic worlds. I used to trip to beautiful places, and experience wonderful stories. But nowadays my dreams are collapsing, and they feel too close to the reality. I'm not sure if midnight is my friend anymore.
2 - SPIDERS
When he's there, I can handle it. I'm not scared when I see him, I'm scared when I saw him but don't see him anymore. When I know he's around, but can't predict the moment he's gonna try to trap me in his web.
3 - PATH
It is always the same dilemma: go right, or go left. I could think I already know which way is the best, but I will never be sure, not before choosing, and sometimes not even after. I only know my dilemma: go right, or go wrong.
4 - DODGE
I remember this time in PE when we were learning boxing. I didn't want to, but the teacher encouraged me to try, and try harder. So I hit my partner's glove with all my strength. And my own fist bounced back into my nose, and broke it. This day I learned the one person who'll never fail to hurt me, would be myself.
5 - MAP
You can't find the pirate's treasure if you don't know where to search, right? Well, the all life is this same hunt, and you always need a map.
Unless you have the privilege to be born with a part of the treasure.
6 - GOLDEN
You know what? Today is gonna be a good day. I have the feeling it's gonna be soft as a dawn, bright as a zenith, and warm as a sunset. Thank god it's Friday.
7 - DRIP
I've been a very bad girl, a very, very, bad bad girl. And I've still got some dripping at the corner of my mouth, and probably leaking somewhere somewhere else...
8 - TOAD
Toad is a playable character from Mario Kart. To play Mario Kart Wii, you need full charged batteries. I wish I had that last night.
9 - BOUNCE
Life is ups and downs. Sometimes you're on top, and sometimes you're in the bottom. Everything is a cycle.
10 - FORTUNE
The wheel of Fortune is a reminder that everything happens for a logical reason, whether we can understand its logic or not. We are all parts of greater patterns, which are always in motion. Only the past is already written, any future is still up to come.
11 - WANDER
Gender. Work. Family. Drugs. Projects and plans. Memories. Expectations. Preferences. Relationships. Art. Death. Identity.
I will always be looking for who I am.
12 - SPICY
Each flavor tells a story. Vanilla is the best friend who never lets you down. Cinnamon likes to offer Christmas gifts. Paprika dances in the club only during summer. Rosemary makes love to you in the garden. And so on. So tell me which spice is your favorite and I'll decide what I'll do to you with my mouth.
13 - RISE
Fascination. Temptation. Ascension.
I must rise to the occasion.
Aim for the moon, shoot in the stars,
Did you know you could go so far?
References made me, I can't stop.
Now from the top, make it pop.
Rejoice and love yourself today,
'cause baby, you are born this way.
14 - CASTLE
Once upon a time, the northern kid finally decided to take control of his story. He believed that his home, the House, would protect him from hate, loneliness and danger. Sadly he realized that he could not escape from himself, nor from anything at all.
15 - DAGGER
I thought blades were the most effective artillery. You stab, they bleed, you live, they die. Simple. Then I discover words. How much you can hurt with words, how long it might take before their wound heals. Impressive. However now I'm sure: the best weapon is silence.
16 - ANGEL
"What a cute guy", every girl said about him - and they were right. But the blondie wasn't straight, and had zero interest in these obtuse teenagers. The only question that completed his mind was: "do I have a gag reflex?"
17 - DEMON
And so the cute guy went looking for the answer, sucking cocks always larger and larger, to discover that no, he had no gag reflex at all. He was a true succubus, and sure an angel for those he was happy to kneel before.
18 - SADDLE
I have no inspiration today. What do you want me to say? Some depression drama like "you don't have a saddle for living life hurts". Or some optimistic bullshit like "when you fall down you get back up and keep on riding". Well, you got both, pick yours. I'm not riding horses anymore.
19 - PLUMP
I don't want to write about weight gain, food OCD, the way I dislike my body changes, nor fatphobia. And I don't see any other point of view for this theme. So relax, take it easy, and see you tomorrow.
20 - FROST
I was born during the coldest night of the coldest winter. It was so cold my heart turned into ice. But i'm not the frozen bitch they call me, I do have warm feelings deep inside of me. And they all are as unique and beautiful as a snowflake.
21 - CHAINS
When I'm looking at you, laid down naked in your bed, wearing only a leather harness and purple handcuffs at your wrists, I realize it's so good for once to be at the right place at the right moment with the right person.
22 - SCRATCHY
When your own body is too much to handle,
when you want to feel less and less yourself,
when your skin becomes the enemy to defeat,
when you need this burn to rise from your ashes.
23 - CELESTIAL
The truth is in the stars for whom is able to read it. However these days the night sky is cloudy, polluted, blurred; it's complicated to read it properly. The future is not so bright, I'm afraid.
24 - SHALLOW
I wish I was able to let you see all my layers, not only the most accessible but also the deepest ones below the surface. With that said, I also wish you wanted to dive inside of me to discover them.
25 - DANGEROUS
Is it worse to be a danger for others, or for oneself? (They answered "for others", I say "for myself".)
26 - REMOVE
You can't remove the milk after you poured it into the hot chocolate, you can't remove the bad text after they read it in the chat, and you can't remove a bad thought after it popped into your brain.
27 - BEAST
I know there is some beauty in everything, but I'm exhausted to try to find it behind all the ugliness in this world. And it's getting difficult to find it in me.
28 - SPARKLE
If homosexuality was a choice, I would choose it only for the lifestyle. I mean, being extra and fancy and colorful and not vanilla flavoured, it's a yes. But liking men... well, choices.
29 - MASSIVE
"Massive", of course I was going to make a joke about my dick. Some people will say I'm bold, but above all the truth is that I'm bald.
30 - RUSH
Life is like a bottle of poppers. It comes in different sizes and perfumes, it's not the healthiest but you kinda like it, and the more you take the hotter it gets ('cause, you know, global warming). And the ends comes before you know it.
31 - FEU
Au commencement il y avait le feu, et à la fin il n'y aura plus que le feu. Le feu est maître, juge, et roi. Le feu est naissance, mort, et renaissance. Qui joue avec le feu périra dans les flammes. Et je suis un grand joueur.

Day 10 FORTUNE
Fame and fortune, the words that dreams are made of, but yet is fortune all that glitters and shines. When we look beneath the gleam will we find the glow that matches?
Ah, fortune you come in many forms whether it be an object or superficial luck. How man wants to obtain you, yet their grip is greasy. Fortune is what you make of it even if the road has its pitfalls. When we try our luck, are we throwing fortune to the wind and relying on fate?
Fortune can have many meanings whether obtainable or not, so the question one must ask is, are we prepared if fortune somehow smiles upon us?

Inktober 2023: 7 drip
Inktober is an art challenge that takes place every year. 31 days, 31 prompts. The original idea is that you draw in ink, but it has long since expanded to include all sorts of art practices. And this year, I am using it for writing prompts. Write a list of ideas. Write a page. Write a character exercise. As a part of preptober, use these prompts to get yourself in the writing habit.
7 drip

Inktober 2023 Day 01 Karin Maaka
https://darkcloudxero.com/2023/10/01/inktober-2023-day-01-karin-maaka/
October and Inktober has arrived once again. I have some ideas of what I want to try drawing this year, but as for what the first drawing would be I couldn't really come up with an idea. Looking through my references and trying to find this cosplayer that I forgot the name of, I came upon another account that reminded me of Karin from Karin or as we know it here in the states, Chibi Vampire. I really want to re read the series this month. It's been a while since I have done traditional work. But when it comes to drawing, it definitely is much more natural and easier for me to do it traditionally. I wanted to use some hatching on this drawing but I forgot that my maru pen worked really poorly with the paper I used. I'll have to have that in mind for future drawings.
If you haven't read Karin, do check it out. I highly recommend it.
Hasta la mañana,

Outfit of the day, 2023-05-08: big ugly sweater, comfy pants, basic long-sleeved tee.
I'm reclaiming this character illustration style with low-stakes self portraits, following a bad client experience that injured my ego.
I started developing this character style last year while working on a beer can design project for Arvon Brewing Co., a local brewery. It quickly became one of my favorite ways to draw, and I began incorporating these characters into other projects (a billboard design for Jastal Plumbing, Inktober 2022, and a mural at Bunker Elementary School). Usually when they're not depicting real people, the characters also have offbeat skin colors (peep some examples here).
I was also hired for a project by another company I won't name, who sought me out specifically because of these characters and the environments I was putting them into for the Arvon project. The premise would be essentially the same: colorful characters in lush scenes, each based on a theme.
It did not work out with this company. I finished one illustration for them, but they opted to not use it or to continue our relationship after that. They were working with a marketing advisory group that simply did not like the characters and didn't understand their colorful skin (they're cartoons, does it need to make perfect sense beyond being a fun aesthetic?) and thought the products would not sell as a result.
In any case, I kind of saw it coming. Even though my client was enthusiastic about my work upon hiring me, it was a lackluster relationship from the start. They took weeks to respond or send me feedback, gave unclear instructions that resulted in me having to backtrack and make huge revisions, and ultimately reversed course and discontinued our relationship for the very reason they initially wanted me to work with them.
What they should have done: They should have strategized with the marketing group beforehand and presented the Arvon designs as examples for what they were planning to do. If the marketing group decided it was a bad idea, the company shouldn't have hired me in the first place. If somehow the idea made it past that stage and they hired me anyway, they should have made me aware of the marketing group's strategy and suggestions instead of letting me run wild with their vague unformed prompts. They should have been clear with their intentions and ideas for each design, either with thorough written descriptions or by having a brainstorming meeting with me.
What I should have done: I should have written a cancellation clause into our contract. Normally I do this with medical illustration client projects because the stakes (and the fees) are higher and because medical illustration is my main source of income (and therefore I guess I subconsciously think of it as my real work, my serious work) but for some reason I neglected to do it for this. Thankfully the client paid the invoice for the illustration I completed (literally the day the payment was due; better under the wire than never), but had there been a cancellation clause in place, I likely would have been entitled to an additional ~$1,000 for partially-completed work. I also should have been more persistent about meeting with them to brainstorm and ensure I was on the right track with what they wanted from me (although I did ask for this repeatedly during one of the long silent periods when I was waiting for feedback that never arrived). I had had such a smooth and unrestricted experience with Arvon, and this (incorrectly) felt like a continuation of that. My guard was down, as were my usual safeguards that guarantee a project's success.
All that said, the fact that this project was cancelled hurt my feelings more than it ordinarily would. Cancelled projects happen sometimes! But this illustration style is perhaps the first I've used that seems uniquely "me," and the characters felt as though they came from somewhere deep within me when I was developing my illustrations for Arvon. Drawing them is usually really fun and freeing for me.
Unrelated to the cancellation of this particular project, I was also working on my mural for Bunker Elementary around the same time. That project was ultimately very rewarding, but it also physically and mentally took a lot out of me. I stared at six of my colorful characters for many frustrating, paint-covered hours, and I was pretty burned out at the end. Even more unrelated but also occurring around the same time, a friend passed along some entirely unnecessary "feedback" that somebody had recently told him how much they hated my character designs, and how that was actually a good thing because negative opinions just mean that I've "made it." While I don't necessarily disagree with that premise and I don't expect everybody to love every artistic endeavor of mine, it felt like a little bit of a dig disguised as a compliment, and all of the above made me never want to draw in this style ever again.
So to bring some of the joy back into it, until the right project comes along again, I'm just going to be drawing myself... for myself (and for the internet, I guess).
