#infant formula and cereals

Nestlé, the world’s largest consumer goods company, adds sugar and honey to infant milk and cereal products sold in many poorer countries, contrary to international guidelines aimed at preventing obesity and chronic diseases, a report has found. Campaigners from Public Eye, a Swiss investigative organisation, sent samples of the Swiss multinational’s baby-food products sold in Asia, Africa and Latin America to a Belgian laboratory for testing. The results, and examination of product packaging, revealed added sugar in the form of sucrose or honey in samples of Nido, a follow-up milk formula brand intended for use for infants aged one and above, and Cerelac, a cereal aimed at children aged between six months and two years. In Nestlé’s main European markets, including the UK, there is no added sugar in formulas for young children. While some cereals aimed at older toddlers contain added sugar, there is none in products targeted at babies between six months and one year. Laurent Gaberell, Public Eye’s agriculture and nutrition expert, said: “Nestlé must put an end to these dangerous double standards and stop adding sugar in all products for children under three years old, in every part of the world.” Obesity is increasingly a problem in low- and middle-income countries. In Africa, the number of overweight children under five has increased by nearly 23% since 2000, according to the World Health Organization. Globally, more than 1 billion people are living with obesity.

Damian is fine with not being the youngest brother. He would prefer it, actually. He would support whoever becomes Dick's new younger brother, would pity Jason's newest younger brother, but what he can't and never will accept is not being Tim's baby brother. Being Tim's youngest brother means cool WE perks and being pulled out of class with a single complaint. If Damian wasn't the youngest, Tim would have expectations and he wouldn't be so lax with Damian. With Dick, Tim is stern and makes sure he does his work. With Jason, Tim makes sure he's always doing well mentally, before disappearing to god knows what until the next check up. But Tim with Damian? Damian gets free time away from school, due to 'learning how to handle WE' (Even if they just relax all day) Damian gets free treats every day, no worry for his work, no disappearing. Damian loves being Tim's youngest brother, and that's why he hates Tim's kid.
damian being jealous of tim's kid!!!!!!! because they're taking his place!! they're taking up tim's time and attention that would previously be damian's. tim can't pull damian out of shitty school because he needs to nurse his baby after it caught some cold. tim can't spend nights in tim's apartment eating the junkfood alfred won't allow in the manor because the pantry space is taken up by formula, baby cereals, and varying flavors of baby food.
damian has "responsibilities" now as an uncle like buying baby shower gifts and posing for pictures with a drooling infant on holidays. he needs to be careful of how loud he turns up the tv because the baby is napping in the same room. he can't get one-on-one time with tim anymore like how tim would pull the 'teaching' card and take damian to WE with him. tim always got so busy so damian would find a quiet office with a comfortable couch and nod off, send the interns to get him food and drinks, and catch up on his shows until tim finally tracked him down and apologized for the delay before showing him how the company operated and what and who was the most important when he took over.
tim was always so much more apologetic with damian unlike how he was with dick or jason. jason and dick got concern and sternness but they didn't get the gentle hands of tim pointing out a stain on damian's shirt or the feel of a handkerchief wiping away a spot on his face. they didn't have tim's hand on their shoulder, squeezing softly whenever they walked anywhere together. they didn't have tim's apartment outfitted with their own bedroom for when damian wanted to spend the night. tim didn't make them their favorite meals. tim didn't stock the pantry with their favorite foods. they didn't have tim on speed dial because they knew whatever problem they could possibly have- tim could fix it. they didn't have any of the things tim did for his baby brother. the things he did for damian.
after that stupid baby arrived that didn't happen anymore. tim didn't do those things anymore- he couldn't do those things anymore. not with a baby to take care of.
tim was on maternity leave and everyone knew WE had the most generous policies in the country so now damian's mentor at WE was some old bag that smelt like talcum powder and who'd been around for longer than damian's grandfather (on his father's side of course).
she didn't let damian lay back and unwind or let him bully the interns.
damian missed tim. he learns it really quickly how much he disliked not being tim's younger brother. how much he disliked not being the youngest...anything in the family.
damian had spent so many years wishing he could just grow up and be an adult already to get his inheritance but now....
now he was no longer the smallest thing in the family.
damian knew it wasn't logical to resent a baby for existing or being born. the entire family had been so ecstatic and happy upon hearing that tim was having the first grand child, great-grandchild, and niece/nephew.
the only one who hadn't been happy was damian. he hand't been able to pinpoint the feeling all those months ago but now he knew what it was.
fear. sprinkled with envy and worry.
damian loved being tim's younger brother. he loved being tim's baby brother. he loved being tim's baby.
but now...damian had been usurped.
his spot had been taken by someone else.
part of damian couldn't help but feel like this was some cruel karmic justice for the sins of his youth.
damian hated tim's baby.
for taking away his big brother. for taking away his mother.

I have 2 pediatric pts who had high blood lead levels. Their lead levels are now normal. But one of them has iron deficiency (even though her Hgb is normal).
Individuals who are severely iron deficient can absorb up to 7 times more lead, as the body responds to iron deficiency by dispatching increasing amounts of the iron transporter DMT1 into the gut. Unfortunately DMT1 can carry eight metals including lead and will transport lead if insufficient iron is available.
Source
From UpToDate: To initiate oral iron therapy, we suggest a dose of 3 mg/kg of elemental iron once daily, rather than higher doses. A 3 mg/kg dose of ferrous sulfate is generally effective and is tolerated by most children. For optimal absorption, the iron should be given in the morning or between meals and with water or juice. Milk and/or dairy products should be avoided for approximately one hour before and two hours after each dose.
Meanwhile, the following dietary goals should be implemented to prevent recurrence: •Infants (less than 12 months of age) should be fed with breast milk or iron-fortified formula. Infants should not be given low-iron formula or unmodified cow's milk.
•For patients six months and older, especially breastfed infants, ensure adequate consumption of iron in complementary foods. These include infant cereals, which are fortified with iron, foods rich in vitamin C, and pureed meats.
•For children older than 12 months of age, intake of milk (cow, almond, or soy) should be limited to less than 20 oz per day and bottle feeding should be discontinued to limit milk intake. Excessive milk intake is the primary reason for the development of IDA (Iron Defifiency Anemia) in this age group and can be associated with occult intestinal blood loss.
●After beginning therapeutic iron, perform follow-up testing to determine the response, consisting of a complete blood count (CBC) or hemoglobin (Hgb). The testing should be performed when the child is healthy, approximately four weeks after beginning iron therapy for children with mild anemia or one to two weeks after beginning iron therapy in those with moderate to severe anemia. Follow-up is essential to confirm that the anemia was due to iron deficiency and to ensure that it is adequately treated.
●Management of responders – If the Hgb has increased by 1 g/dL, therapy is continued for at least three months, at which time, the CBC is retested. Iron therapy should be given for at least three months, and many children require longer treatment courses to replenish iron stores. In general, iron therapy should be continued for at least one month after the Hgb reaches the age-adjusted normal range. If possible, a serum ferritin concentration should be measured to check iron stores prior to discontinuation of iron therapy, with a goal threshold of ≥20 ng/mL.
●Further evaluation for nonresponders – Patients who do not demonstrate an adequate response within four weeks of initiating iron therapy should be reevaluated. Potential causes of recurrent or refractory IDA include ineffective treatment (nonadherence or incorrect dosing), ongoing low-iron diet, an incorrect diagnosis, or ongoing blood loss or malabsorption. Our approach is as follows:
•Interview the parent or caregiver to determine whether the iron therapy has been given at the appropriate dose and timing, whether the appropriate diet modifications have been made, and if there has been any significant intercurrent illness (which might cause a transient decrease in Hgb). The most common reason for failure is that the treatment plan was not correctly followed.
•If the patient has indeed been taking an appropriate dose of iron and has not had an intercurrent illness, assess detailed dietary history and/or perform additional laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis (eg, iron testing, if not previously performed) and rule out conditions that might simulate or complicate IDA such as thalassemia trait or anemia of chronic disease. In addition, for children with persistent or recurrent IDA despite appropriate dietary changes and iron therapy, stool samples should be tested for occult blood. If the results are positive, additional screening should be performed for common causes of gastrointestinal blood loss, including cow's milk protein-induced colitis in infants and celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease in older children.
●Intravenous (IV) iron therapy – IV iron therapy may be warranted for patients with severe or persistent anemia who have proven oral iron intolerance, malabsorption, or nonadherence despite family/caregiver education and support to optimize oral therapy. Several forms of IV iron therapy with good safety profiles are available for use in pediatrics. Selection among these options may depend on relative costs and availability, time required for administration, and maximum permissible dose per infusion.

Parents are furious after learning their children were given floor sealant instead of milk to drink at a summer camp on Tuesday.
Two adults and 12 children drank the sealant with breakfast at the RALLY summer school program in Juneau, Alaska, the Juneau School District confirmed to Newsweek.
"We are still investigating how it happened," Superintendent Bridget Weiss said.
"What we do know is that sealant that was packaged in large pouches was mistakenly delivered to the site on the same pallet as boxes of large pouches of milk," said Weiss. "The liquid looked just like milk and was mistakenly put in the milk dispenser. The sealant did not have any odor so wasn't immediately obvious."
After students sipping the sealant complained about its taste, two staff members tried the liquid, wondering if it was spoiled milk.
Once the error was realized, staff stopped the children from drinking any further and called Poison Control. According to a safety data sheet for the product, which is called Hillyard Seal 341, it is "expected to be a low ingestion hazard."
Parents told local radio station KTOO that they were only alerted to the incident around midday, hours after the incident. They said it was only after school administrators called a poison control center and monitored the children for a while that parents received calls.
Rhyan Nydam, whose 7-year-old attends the camp, told the outlet she should have been involved right away.
"I just can't believe it took so long even just to tell me, you know? If I wanted to run my kid to the hospital, I wouldn't have even known," said Nydam.
Her husband Barry Nydam added, "I don't see my daughter going there anymore. You'd have to have the people running it removed and new people running it."
According to Weiss, everyone who drank the sealant seems to be safe so far.
"There were some headaches, some burning in their throats and mouths when first ingested and some stomach aches," she said. "As of last evening, I was able to talk with 10 of the 12 families directly and students were mostly feeling better and some still recovering but had not gotten worse."
The sensitive issue of children's food safety was recently thrust into the national spotlight by Abbott's recall of powder baby formulas, due to the presence of a rare bacteria that is lethal for infants. At least nine babies have died after consuming the company's formula manufactured in Sturgis, Michigan, documents obtained by eFoodAlert revealed.
In April, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also launched an investigation into the popular children's cereal Lucky Charms, after thousands of consumers claimed it gave them food poisoning.
And last year, over 15,000 pounds of beef patties from Ohio-based AdvancePierre Foods, Inc. were recalled after the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) warned they could include "small green soft plastic." Some frozen batches of the items had been distributed to schools.
Newsweek reached out to the Juneau Police Department for comment.

i am SO fucked lol. it's 11pm and i went down to have a bowl of cereal, and long story short, a carton of oat milk exploded above the sink, and covered half the kitchen in milk, including THE INFANT FEEDING SHIT. landlord is already asleep, her husband was in the kitchen with me, and went 'oh shit', and helped me paper towel mop up the kitchen. after that, he left, and i used disinfectant wipes on all the hard surfaces, like bench, outside of containers, etc. i washed the bowl used to soak bottle parts in boiling water with hot water and dishwashing liquid, which is fine because it gets boiling water put in it, but for the rest, i could only rinse and soak in boiling water, but she'll still need to soak them in a special sanitizing solution tomorrow.
she's gonna be PISSED. sanitizing takes a while, and i don't think she really has spares of the single portion formula powder container for the morning. she can just reuse the one she has set and filled for the feed at like 3am, but she'd rather not i'm guessing. she doesn't hold grudges and will quickly get over it, but i haven't felt like this since i was a little kid and smashed a glass on the table with my foot while spinning on an office chair, and getting in deep shit with mum lmao.
good thing i wake up super late (she gets up around 8.30am, i get out of bed around 12-2pm), so she'll have time to calm down, AND i was planning on making chocolate cupcakes tomorrow, so i'll let her have as many as she wants :')

Importance of iron fortified food during pregnancy
Iron deficiency is among the most common nutritional deficiencies globally, and it affects more than 20% of the world’s population, as iron imparts an important role in the formation of blood.
Iron deficiency often leads to anemia which is defined as having a blood hemoglobin (Hb) level below standard which usually results due to insufficient dietary intake of iron, poor utilization of iron from ingested food, or combination of both.
Human body doesn’t naturally make iron. Iron can only be obtained through diet or through supplements. That’s why increasing of iron-rich foods intake in pregnant woman can be important, especially during pregnancy.
When woman is pregnant, they need about twice the amount of iron because woman body uses iron to make extra blood for baby. And yet, about 50% of pregnant women don’t get enough of this important mineral.
Why is iron important during pregnancy?
Iron is essential during pregnancy and lactation.
It gives stamina to the mother, and is essential in proper brain development and blood cell formation for the baby.
Pregnancy increases woman blood supply by up to 50 percent. That’s where iron comes in. Iron is used by the body to make red blood cells. An increase in blood supply means that you’ll need more red blood cells and more iron to make those blood cells.
Also, it helps in treating and preventing iron deficiency anemia. Hence, incorporating iron-rich foods in your diet is extremely important for a healthy pregnancy and baby.
Iron rich foods can either be vegetarian or non-vegetarian based.
Low iron may make a pregnant person feel tired, have headaches, get dizzy, feel weak, or have shortness of breath. These are often things that a pregnant person may experience at some point in their pregnancy anyway, so all pregnant people have their iron levels tested regardless of symptoms.
There are two types of iron:
Iron from animal foods called Heme iron (Non-vegetarian source)
Iron from plant foods called Non-heme iron (Vegetarian source)
Vegetarian sources of iron include:
Fortified Cereals
Green leafy vegetables – e.g., spinach, methi (fenugreek)
Dried seeds and nuts
Whole grains
Pulses and beans – e.g., lentils, peas, soy, kidney bean
Fruits – e.g., figs, dates, apples, raisins (dried fruits)
Non-vegetarian sources of iron include:
Poultry – chicken breasts, chicken drumsticks
Seafood – canned tuna, mackerel, trout, bass
Eggs
Meat

Welcoming a new baby into the world is an exciting journey filled with joy and wonder. As a new parent, one of your top priorities is ensuring your baby receives proper nutrition to support healthy growth and development. Understanding the essentials of baby nutrition is key to providing the best start in life for your little one. Let's explore the ABCs of baby nutrition and feeding for new parents.
Breastfeeding Basics: Breast milk is nature's perfect food for newborns, providing essential nutrients, antibodies, and bonding opportunities between mother and baby. Aim to breastfeed exclusively for the first six months of life, and continue breastfeeding alongside complementary foods for up to two years or more.
Formula Feeding: If breastfeeding is not possible or chosen, infant formula is a suitable alternative that provides essential nutrients for baby's growth and development. Choose a formula recommended by your pediatrician and follow preparation and feeding guidelines carefully.
Introducing Solids: Around six months of age, babies are ready to start exploring solid foods alongside breast milk or formula. Begin with single-ingredient purees or soft, mashed foods like rice cereal, fruits, and vegetables, and gradually introduce a variety of textures and flavors.
Nutrient-Rich Foods: Offer a balanced diet that includes a variety of nutrient-rich foods to support baby's growth and development. Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats in baby's meals to ensure they receive essential vitamins and minerals.
Responsive Feeding: Pay attention to baby's hunger and fullness cues, and practice responsive feeding by feeding on demand rather than on a strict schedule. Allow baby to determine how much and how often they eat, while also respecting their preferences and appetite.
Food Allergies and Intolerances: Be mindful of potential food allergies and intolerances when introducing new foods to baby's diet. Common allergenic foods like peanuts, eggs, dairy, and wheat can be introduced one at a time, and closely monitored for any adverse reactions.
Hydration: Ensure baby stays hydrated by offering breast milk, formula, or water throughout the day, especially during hot weather or when baby is sick. Avoid giving juice or sugary drinks to infants under one year of age.
Mealtime Environment: Create a positive mealtime environment that promotes healthy eating habits and encourages exploration of new foods. Sit down together as a family, offer a variety of foods, and model healthy eating behaviors for your baby to observe and imitate.
Pediatrician Guidance: Consult with a pediatrician or child specialist for personalized advice and guidance on baby nutrition and feeding. Dr. Prashant Gandhi, a renowned pediatrician in Borivali West, Mumbai, offers expert care and support for new parents navigating the world of infant feeding.
Enjoying the Journey: Above all, enjoy the journey of feeding and nourishing your baby. Bonding over mealtime experiences, celebrating milestones, and watching your little one grow and thrive are precious moments to cherish as a new parent.
In conclusion, providing optimal nutrition for your baby is essential for their health, growth, and development. By understanding the basics of baby nutrition and feeding, seeking guidance from a trusted pediatrician like Dr. Prashant Gandhi in Borivali West, Mumbai, and embracing the joys of parenthood, you can give your baby the best start in life and lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy eating habits.

India Baby Food Market Outlook, Analysis, Forecast 2023-2030
BlueWeave Consulting, a leading strategic consulting and market research firm, in its recent study, estimated the India Baby Food Market size at USD 1.68 billion in 2023. During the forecast period between 2024 and 2030, BlueWeave expects the India Baby Food Market size to expand at a CAGR of 12.23% reaching a value of USD 2.85 billion by 2030. The Baby Food Market in India is propelled by the increasing urbanization, rising medical complications, and evolving lifestyles among women. The category encompasses soft, easily consumable products for infants and toddlers, such as milk formulas and prepared baby foods made from mashed vegetables, fruits, and cereals, providing essential nutrients. The growing trend of self-employment and an expanding female workforce has led working mothers to opt for these products over traditional breastfeeding due to extended office hours. Also, medical complications during and after pregnancy contribute to the preference for infant milk formula, amplifying the demand and expanding the India Baby Food Market size.
Opportunities – Growing awareness about Child Nutrition
The vulnerability of toddlers and infants to foodborne illnesses due to underdeveloped immune systems has heightened parental awareness of nutrition. This concern prompts a shift towards organic baby food, as parents become more discerning about avoiding harmful chemicals and preservatives. Esteemed companies such as Tiny Spoons, Ormeal, and Happa respond by crafting baby food meticulously with natural ingredients, introducing organic product lines. This conscientious approach not only eliminates parental apprehensions about infants' well-being but also broadens the companies' consumer base. The growing preference for organic options reflects a pervasive trend in the baby food market, where heightened nutrition awareness is driving significant changes in consumer choices.
Impact of Escalating Geopolitical Tensions on India Baby Food Market
Escalating geopolitical tensions exert a complex influence on the India Baby Food Market. Heightened uncertainties, trade disruptions, and geopolitical conflicts can disrupt supply chains, impacting the availability of raw materials essential for baby food production. Fluctuations in currency values and economic uncertainties may also contribute to pricing fluctuations, potentially affecting consumer purchasing power. Furthermore, geopolitical tensions can influence regulatory frameworks and trade policies, adding complexities for market participants. The market's resilience in the face of geopolitical challenges depends on the adaptability and strategic planning of industry players to navigate potential disruptions and maintain a stable supply chain for essential baby food products in the Indian market.
