Survey #360
“we are the ones that wanna play  /  always wanna go, but you never wanna stay”
"Crawling" or "In The End?" I want to say "Crawling," but I really can't be sure. Both are bomb. Is your window open? No. Monsters Inc. or Shrek? Shrek, my man. What did you last hear that made your jaw drop? Jason's mom died. What is the longest shower or bath you have ever taken? I remember as kids, Nicole and I would sometimes play 'til Mom made us finish because the water was cold by then. As an adult, idk about my longest shower. Do you have a preference of chocolate? Yeah, milk chocolate. Is there anyone you’d like to hug right now? Yeah. Could you ever picture someone writing a biography about you? Definitely not. Do you have a clock in your room? No. Do you shut off the computer when you’re done using it? No, I just close it. Do you usually catch a cold during the winter? No. I just about never get sick. Are you a good multi-tasker? NOOOOOOOOOOO. Do you know any deaf people? If so, is it easy or difficult to have conversations with them? No. Is there a door knocker on your front door? No. Were you ever into Pokémon? Bitch I still am. Do you drink a lot of water? Sigh, no. I'm definitely better than I used to be, though; once upon a time, I literally never drank it unless I was extremely hot and dehydrated. Nowadays, it's usually after I finish my soda for the day that I then only drink water, normally around one full tall cup of it. Do you like fireworks? They're beautiful, but I'm personally against them out of respect for veterans suffering from PTSD as well as animals, because I'm not exactly interested in traumatizing them, either. Is respect given or earned with you? It's given, the way I think it should be. Are you “in the closet” about anything? No. Are you missing any teeth? No. Do you like scrapbooking? I've never gotten into it and am not really interested in doing so. What was or will be your first tattoo? It's a semicolon butterfly on my right wrist. Sometimes I've thought about getting it covered with a cooler design but the same concept; it was literally from Google, and I'm very much not into "sharing" tattoo designs with probably thousands of other people. But, I still think it really is cute, and it's just very special to me as my first, so idk. Do you have any tattoos dedicated to someone special? I have one written in Sara's handwriting inside a heart, and my "ohana" tattoo that I am 100% getting covered was dedicated to my former best friend Colleen. I've talked before about why "ohana" has never really resonated with me, and I just don't like it anymore at all. Thank God it's small. Do you like ghost stories? Oh HELL yeah, lay 'em on me. What was your favorite movie as a kid? The Lion King. Some things never change, ha. Do you own a lot of cookbooks? Mom has looooots, but never uses any. I think her mom gave them to her, so she just keeps 'em. What’s your father’s handwriting like? It looks like every other man's handwriting I've ever seen lol. All the letters are capitalized. Did you wash your hair last time you showered? I wash my hair every time I shower. I have to with it naturally being so oily. What does your shampoo smell like? Coconut. Do you listen to Guns N' Roses? Not a lot, but yeah. They've got some bangers. I actually want "Sweet Child O' Mine" to be the father/daughter dance at my wedding. Have you ever been a bridesmaid? Yeah, at my sister's wedding. What was the last video game that you beat? I replayed Silent Hill 2 a long time ago. Have you ever hyperventilated? Yep. Do you talk in your sleep? I scream in my sleep. Nightmares/terrors are a blast. Whose house did you last sleep over? Sara's. Have you ever been cut by scissors? No. Do you like peaches? It's odd, I like canned sliced peaches, but the actual, full fruit, I don't. I love peach flavored juice, though. Do you enjoy being surrounded by neighbors, or would you be more comfortable someplace secluded? Take me back to the middle of nowhere, please. I'm really not digging being in an actual neighborhood. Is there any sibling rivalry between you and your siblings, if you have any? Not at all. Do you usually root for the good guys or the bad guys? Ha, the baddies... Are you allowed to have pets at your house? We're allowed to have what we currently own and then maybe one dog if Mom finally finds one. Have you ever lived in a trailer park? No. Is there anyone that you know through the internet that you would feel comfortable meeting in person? There's quite a few, actually! Have you ever had a dream involving characters from a game/movie/television show? Yeah. What’s the last thing you wrote down? My signature, I think? Do you remember any phone numbers from years ago that now belong to someone you don’t know? No. Have you ever found something strange in your mailbox? No. Who was the last relative that came to visit you? My half-sister and her husband. Does your bedding all match? Not currently. Are you more comfortable with having short hair or long hair? SHORT. Are you interested in fantasy movies/shows? That's my preference. Have you ever gone whale-watching? No, but that'd be dope. What is something that you have a large amount of? Meerkat plushies. Who is it that you’re in love with? Nobody. Have you ever gotten love and infatuation confused? No. Do you have a steady income? No. Do you take your medications in the morning or at night? Both. Have you ever bought a YouTuber’s merch? No, I wish. :( Do you think oatmeal tastes better when made with water or milk? MILK. I don't eat it with water. When was the last time you ran into someone that you didn’t want to see? Idk. Have you ever tried vlogging, and if yes, did you stick with it? Noooo, I'm completely disinterested in doing that myself. If you go to church, what is your favorite thing about it? I don't go. Even as a kid when Mom made me, I hated it. ^and what is your least favorite thing about it? N/A What do you do for exercise? I don't. .-. I want a pool SO badly to swim and strengthen my legs without having to worry about sweating or collapsing, though. Mom says we don't have space, but we definitely do. Not a lot, but enough. Do you have a birthmark? If yes, what color is it? Yeah, it's just a bit darker than the rest of my skin. Do you need to lose weight? Yes. My sister, Mom, and I very recently started a Weight Watchers subscription and we're all working our asses off to stick to it. Ash has already lost like, 12 pounds (she started before Mom and me), so I'm kinda hopeful. Have you ever had a cat? Growing up, after we took in a stray female, we ended up with a fucking empire of cats, literally around three dozen, I'd say. They were all outdoors, too, and not fixed because we couldn't afford it, so tomcats would come around and, y'know, make matters worse. Eventually, animal control took them all and I was DEVASTATED, but looking back, I understand it was necessary. Anyway, I have one cat now. Indoors and fixed and the prince of my world, haha. Have you ever had a dog? We've had a few. I was born with my dad having a collie named Trigger, but I don't remember her at all; she died of old age I believe when I was very young. Then we briefly had a pup named Angel, but she died due to that disease some puppies just have. We didn't get another dog until Teddy, who was my Christmas present, and he was put to sleep only last year, rest my baby's soul. We also had Dale, Cali, Delilah, and Bentley. Have you ever any other kind of animal? A LOT. I'm probably going to forget some, but we've had hamsters, rats, snakes, fish, a turtle, two lizards, gerbils, guinea pigs... just a lot. Animals have always been very important in my life. Have you ever had a pet rock? HA, yeah. I didn't take it seriously at all, but I had one. When was the last time you painted something? Not since my Painting course in my final college attempt. Do you have any disabilities? Not in the traditional sense, no. My social anxiety though is at such a severity that it majorly infringes upon my ability to do a LOT of things, though. What are five of your favorite stores at the mall? I couldn't name five. Just Hot Topic and Spencer's, really. What season do you want to get married in? AUTUMN. The actual dream situation would be to get married in the snow in a black dress, like can you IMAGINE the pictures, but realistically, it'd be in the fall to avoid the biting cold. Has anyone ever spread lies about you? Yeah. Anything special planned for today? Nope. Blue or green? Blue. How much older/younger than you was the person you lost your virginity to? He's two years older than me. Do you still care for that person? Very much. Can you completely annihilate the first Mario game in less than an hour? I haven't even played the first game. I've never really been into the games to begin with. Did you make it all the way through the Oregon Trail game? Yes! I was OOOOOBSESSEEEEEED as a kid. I would usually play it after school when my mom was an assistant teacher and was finishing up her work for the day. Have you ever contemplated climbing a water tower? Uh, no. Those kind of people got some wanderlust levels that I ain't got, haha. If you have a Facebook, when was the last time you changed your profile picture? It's been a few months. Would you ever marry someone who was lower class? Um, yes? You can deny it all you want, but answering "no" is pretty much the same as saying you'd marry for money. Is there a guy you wish you hadn’t let slip away? ugh Which do you prefer: English or math? English, by light years. Who is a singer that has given you chills? David Draiman's voice in the Disturbed cover of "Sound of Silence" is fucking haunting. Greatest cover of all time. Do you watch America’s Got Talent? I did when Sharon was a judge. Do you think you could win America’s Got Talent? Hell no. What act would you perform in a talent show? uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Have you ever practiced yoga? Yes. I used to be BANGIN at it. What is your favorite thing to buy at the Farmer’s Market? Fruit! Do you get carsickness? No. What color is the rim of your full-length mirror? Black. What is your state’s bird (if you live in the US)? Cardinal. Which style of wedding dress is your favorite? I'm a sucker for ballgown dresses. Do you enjoy editing videos? I used to love it, for many many years. Now, I just don't have the dedication or motivation to. Do you enjoy editing photos? Yes. If you gave birth, do you think you would want it filmed? Um, absolutely not. I would have NO desire to look back on me shrieking my lungs out and essentially dying. I handle abdominal pain very poorly, so I've got a goooood feeling that if I actually wanted to have kids, I'd be that woman screeching like a banshee.

Catch Me If You Can
SPORTING EVENT..RESEARCH
Adults running about a field chasing a ball, or running very fast, jumping over things of varying heights, throwing things, catching things, hitting various things with a stick. In a small confined space punching each other. Or swimming up and down and up and down. Sitting on the back of a running horse. The list is almost endless. This world of needless physical exercise is called Sport...and is full of drama and emotion, both for those who do it and those who watch it...apparently!!
In this project I will show a selection of these people, both participants and spectators in the “moment”, engaged in their chosen activity.
Using a variety of photographic techniques I will attempt to make a visually appealing assortment of images....So here goes, first things first...
How to do it!
With every sport there will be a differing set of challenges facing the photographer.. The size of the area, is it the size of a boxing ring (for two people punching each other) or the size of a football field (for 22 people kicking a ball) or even bigger.
How close can you get to the action
How many people are taking part..just two or a whole lot.
Is it indoors or outdoors
Natural lighting or specially constructed lighting specifically for the sport in question.
All of these different scenarios will dictate what kind of equipment the photographer will need and the way the camera should be set up.
So before you can really start it’s helpful to know what sport you will be photographing. Sometimes you will just have to learn quick and work it out on the job.
SOUND ADVICE FROM PEOPLE WHO DO THIS FOR A LIVING
Having just read a google’s worth of ‘Top ten essentials for sports photography’ and for the basics there seems to be a general consensus with the preferred functions on the camera. The main factor for professionals is continuous burst speed with some of the present crop of top the range sports oriented DSLR’s shooting 14fps or more. With the speed of the action things are changing in those fractions of a second and having the ability to be able to follow those changes so closely is a highly sought after function. With most prosumer cameras these days the ISO capabilities are becoming increasingly impressive with ISO32000 in the native range of the camera becoming the norm and with that also stunning reductions in the noise at these high ISO levels. These ISO levels really assist in reaching the shutter speeds used in a lot for freezing this high speed action. Starting at 500th of a second and going up. 2000th of a second is not unusual. Along with high ISO the next thing to assist in these high shutter speeds is the next topic of general agreement....
Lenses.....lenses should be fast, as fast as can be. The aperture of a good lens for sport if using a zoom is f2.8. It’s not uncommon for a professional sports photographer to have 3 camera bodies. The most common, and most versatile, setup for most professional sports photographers is to start with the trio of 16-35mm ƒ/2.8, 24-70mm ƒ/2.8 and 70-200mm ƒ/2.8 lenses. These three options provide all the coverage needed to shoot everything from wide-angle shots of a packed stadium through any action happening up to midway down most sporting venues. Though these lenses are not cheap, when it starts to get to the bigger fast primes that will allow you to see the action close up at the other side of a stadium or football field they can cost the same as a nice family car. For those beginning their sports photography there are some great lenses that along with the high ISO capabilities just talked about it will do a great job without having to be so wide open. A 70-300mm f4-5.6 or even 150-600mm f5-6.3 will do a great job of covering that far away action.
Another piece of advice where there is general agreement is in positioning. Get to the venue early and have a good look at all the potential spots and make sure you’re good to go with your settings before the action starts....But don’t stay in the one place and don’t just focus on the action. In the audience there is as much drama as on the field of play, or after some high point of action...the reaction. There are winners and losers and both have equal visual weight and potential to produce the image that encapsulates the moment and the whole event.
Another is ..You are a photographer first and foremost, the subject is sport but the intent is a striking image with light and shadow, composition, balance, colour, story all fundamentals.
WHERE TO SHOOT.
If you are not inclined to sports then it is apparently very easy to block it out of your daily experience and be blissfully unaware but as it happens, open your eyes to sports and its everywhere, EVERYWHERE!
Local newspaper for local events, google to check out what's on in your local area and further afield. Amateur or professional. Check out sporting arenas, sports and athletic clubs, football stadiums. If there is a particular sport you are interested in you can refine your search. If you’re not to bothered which sport to start with then prepare a general polite letter asking whether you can come and take photos. Send it out to as many events as you can find. Cast the net far and wide and the chances are you would be spoiled for choice.
Here we are about two months later...It’s taken a while to get access to sports, longer than I had at first thought but now I have I’m hoping for a variety of sports to shoot. I made contact with Glasgow University Sports Association which is the umbrella organisation for more than 40 sports clubs at the University. The Association has recently been actively seeking Photographers to shoot all the club games.
Seeing as time was running out on the brief I took the first possible opportunity to shoot. It was an inter-university fencing tournament Men and Women. Men against Bath University..cant remember the women's opposition University.
As soon as I was confirmed to shoot I started to watch some YouTube videos on the rules of the sport, the moves and the scoring.
It was quite a challenging shoot. It was in a large, bright gym hall. A long (14m) rubber mat with the essential markings for the game was rolled out and taped to the floor about two meters from the wall. Too close to the wall to be able to shoot from the wall side, just too near the swishing blades. The problem was that this wall was one vast mirror reflecting not just those fencing but the spectators and myself. This made for a challenge to minimise the distraction of everything else in the reflection.
In fencing the action is fast. In Olympic sports second fastest behind shooting I was told by one competitor. I was set to f4 and to get the quick exposures  I needed to freeze the action (1/1000th/s) the ISO was pushed up to 6400.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saturday 8th March. 9am-5pm. Glasgow Caledonia University. Today I shot a trampolining tournament with all Scottish Universities competing. It was in a large high gym hall with what looks like big halogen spotlights. There’s about 200 people in the hall, mostly either competing, judging or organising. Its not open to the public. After some shots my exposure settings settle at 1/320th f4 ISO6400. I didn’t want to push the ISO much higher and had to make a compromise with shutter speed. In many of the images there is movement in the feet of the athletes. I made a decision based on the aesthetics. I liked this slight movement in many of the images, a suggestion of movement. There was no high vantage point so I made do with standing on a chair. It gave me enough of a height advantage to clear the images of the people walking about in the hall. They really didn’t add to any of the images. I did include one or two all the same that didn't distract from the action.
I’m much happier with this set of images than with the fencing from the previous sports shoot. With that shoot the large wall mirror behind the 🤺 that ran the length of the hall was so distracting..reflecting everything in the hall..the fencers, the other competitors...and me! It made it almost impossible to get simple, strong images being much too busy.
This time around it was a far easier shoot to get a more aesthetically pleasing result. Often against a background of a large plain wall with few distractions and with lighting that also had a dramatic quality.
Overall i’m extremely pleased with the results. There are some possible portfolio contenders.

Third and final set of photos for the brief. This time it was outdoors, in the evening, cold and pouring of rain. Bellahouston outdoors ski and snowboarding center. Again it was an inter universities event sponsored by Glasgow Taxis.
It was a difficult shoot. Unevenly lit, there were pools of light and areas of dark. The area was large and the athletes were going at speed. This demanded several skills. The most challenging was to get a handle of the AF system on my  new camera. Sports are generally demanding on AF and this was no different. Using 2 camera bodies..Canon 5dmk3 and 5dmk4  with a 24-105 f4 on one and a 70-300 f4.5-5.6 on the other.
The action started just as it was beginning to darken so the exposure needed to be adjusted over the first half hour or so until well after sunset and the only light was artificial. Because of the layout of the slope and the nature of the contest there wasn’t much variety of movement and routes taken down the course. At the end of the ski tournament there was some snowboarding a ski freestyle which promised a lot more exciting images but unfortunately the heavens opened as this began and the rain poured down. Having been out in the bitter cold with no gloves for 3 hours (lesson learned) and the lenses not being weather sealed to a Scottish downpour level I decided to retreat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This has been a thoroughly enjoyable brief, much against expectation. There have been challenges at every event that I would like to think I have dealt with and overcome to produce many images I'm very happy with. I have become more aware of the reasons why sports photographers need that extra quality in their gear. Proper weather sealing and fast f2.8 lenses are just near essential for any professionals working in this area. Knowing something of the sport you are shooting helps. Getting to the venue early and checking it out, finding where the good light is, also helps enormously. And moving about to get different points of view.
There have been many photos taken for this brief-in total probably near 5000. Of those I have whittled it down to 500 or so. The final challenge is to choose the final 6 for printing and submission.
Of the 3 sports I shot for this brief the trampolining was by far the most enjoyable and i’d say successful. Producing the most images I was happy with. Well lit venue with not too many visual distractions and the sport itself was so conducive to aesthetic interpretation.
The time spent has been quite considerable for this brief with two full days and one half day of shooting and then because of the huge number of shots another 3 full days of choosing, deleting and optimising the images. That said, there has in fact been very little optimisation in post. In all three sessions I have used lens correction, in some a tweak of white balance. And in very few a touch more, lightening shadows or reducing highlights but very little else.
On revising everything I see that after 5000 photos I've forgotten one of the requests of the brief..to have a panning shot!!! This is bad news. Time is very short and to shoot some more sports is a days worth of work. First getting some sports to shoot, shooting and then picking and processing. For not reading the brief properly I’ve lost a day at a very crucial point in time where I need every second. One big lesson learned. Less than 2 weeks to go.

Wellness specialists offer these methods for remaining fit during the always evolving COVID-19 limitations:

Make cleaning a cardio movement by including oxygen consuming exercises, for example, step climbing.
Step into a streaming class. Gathering wellness is a major fascination at rec centers. In case your rec center doesn't offer streaming classes, search free of charge web based streaming exercises on stages like YouTube. The contributions online are apparently unending, with paid applications, for example, Daily Burn, Apple Fitness+ and Peloton offer month to month streaming bundles too.
Make your own home rec center. You don't require costly cardio hardware or a full rack of loads to make a home rec center. Just put resources into a couple of reasonable things to make working out at home simpler, for example, a decent quality yoga mat, a fundamental arrangement of free weights (5, 8 and 10 lbs. to begin), a leap rope and a stage/seat. With these things, you'll have a home rec center set-up that doesn't surpass a room and can be put away without any problem.
Investigate your environmental elements. Coronavirus might have shut down indoor exercise in your space however nature is as yet just getting started (really look at nearby guidelines and limitations). Investigate new stops, running path, bicycle ways and waterways if climate grants in your region of the planet. Open air practice offers bunch advantages and difficulties your body in unexpected ways in comparison to utilizing indoor hardware. Continuously follow COVID-19 security suggestions, for example, remaining 6 feet separated, wearing a cover when you are around others and appropriate handwashing when utilizing public offices.
Work with a wellbeing and exercise proficient on the web. 10 Simple Healthy Living Tips for Seniors During COVID-19
Guest post by Melissa Andrews
It has been over a year since the Covid-19 pandemic changed our lives. Businesses, organizations, governments, and industries have had to make adjustments to ensure their employees' and communities' health and safety and keep their operations in order. Individually, we’ve had to learn how to cope with the new normal as well.
In addition to the frontline workers, seniors have also had to exert extra effort to adapt to the changes brought about by Covid-19. They are, after all, one of the populations most vulnerable to experiencing severe health complications from this virus. If you are a senior or have a senior loved one, you know how important it is to follow health and safety protocols to mitigate the risks of getting the virus. Although a major part of the population in the US has already been vaccinated, Covid-19 is still very much around. As such, now more than ever, a healthy senior lifestyle is vital.
Switching to a new lifestyle may not be easy for many seniors, but it is not impossible to achieve if done gradually and with proper guidance. Healthy living is about making a conscious decision to live a simpler lifestyle and devote more time to what is good for you, the people around you, and the environment. It may sound like a complex task, but it’s not as hard as it seems. As long as you or your elderly loved one are determined to commit to  healthy changes, a healthier lifestyle is very much within reach.
It also helps to have a guide or some ideas on what changes you can make. Here are some tips to consider to help get you or a loved one started.
Tips for Healthy Senior Living during COVID-19
As mentioned above, switching to a healthier lifestyle means doing what’s good for you, your family and friends, and the environment. The best way to do this is to start by loving yourself a little more. Pay more attention to your needs – not just physical needs, but those that satisfy your heart and soul as well.
1. Start your day right
Practice waking up each morning with positive thoughts – happy thoughts that can brighten your day, and start it off on the right note. This positive mindset can be fostered with a simple meditation for mindfulness, or a simple yoga or stretching routine, which can help open up your mind to everything good.
Eat a healthy breakfast, the first and most important meal of the day. If you’ve been eating without thinking for the past months, it’s time to shift to healthier alternatives. Try eating some oats and more fruits and vegetables instead of just processed foods, like cereals or bread. Experiment with your options. For example, you can make fresh fruit shakes or juices. Also, make sure you’re hydrating with each meal, and don’t forget to drink water throughout the day.
If you live alone, find time to talk to your family (or friends) over the phone or online via video chat (you can ask a family member to help you with this).
If you live with your family, use breakfast as catch-up time and update each other with what’s happening in your lives. Consider avoiding the serious stuff, though, such as politics and even Covid-19-related issues, as these can be unpleasant breakfast table topics. Try to focus on more light and fun stuff.
2. Set aside 15 to 20 minutes a day for exercise
Your early morning yoga should not be your only physical activity for the day. You need to exercise regularly to keep your muscles moving and to help improve blood circulation as well. You can walk your dog around the neighborhood (and don’t forget to wear your face mask in crowded areas) – or in your garden/backyard if you want to be safe. Around 15 to 20 minutes of brisk walking every day is a great, low-impact form of cardio.
You may also want to try going on the stationary bike or treadmill or a stepper/elliptical trainer for some low-impact cardio workouts. Don’t overwork yourself, though. This activity is more suitable for younger seniors.
An important reminder: always check with your doctor or therapist first before starting any exercise or physical activity. Also, don't forget to do some stretching before and after every workout.
3. Focus on a new hobby or new project
Staying at home will never be boring if you know how to keep yourself occupied. One of the best ways to do this is to start a new hobby or project. A good example would be creating an indoor or outdoor garden.
Plants are emotional boosters that are calming. Planting can help improve your self-worth and self-confidence. It is also satisfying, adds aesthetics to your home, and provides a healthy and safe distraction.
Another idea would be to do arts and craft projects using recycled materials (so you won’t have to buy stuff – and you can help the environment). For example, you can turn used bottles and other similar containers into spice or condiment organizers and décor. Used cardboards and shoeboxes may also be converted into home décor, photo frames, office organizers, or storage boxes.
4. Embark on home improvement projects
Rearrange a portion or several areas of your home. Limit your activity to the smaller, lighter stuff. Do not attempt to carry furniture or anything too heavy for you. Remember, your health and safety are your priority.
Make your home green. There are simple ways to do this. You can use non-toxic and sustainable materials. You can ask a family member to help you with securing these items. Another idea would be to ensure that your appliances are certified with an Energy Star, which means they are energy-efficient.
You can also put indoor plants in strategic areas in your home (if you do not yet have an indoor garden).
  5. Keep your mind active
An active mind is a healthy mind; as such, don’t hesitate to try out brain-stimulating activities like
 - reading
- browsing the internet (you can ask your grandchildren to help you with this)
- playing games like Sudoku, chess, Words with Friends, and even online games
- doing crossword puzzles or trivia games
- drawing or painting
- making a scrapbook or writing a journal
- organizing your photo albums
6. Schedule a “quiet time”
Spending some time alone is healthy because it allows you to relax and reflect. It’s good for your mind, body, and soul. Set aside at least one hour a day as your quiet time. It can be a mid-day, mid-afternoon, or pre-bedtime meditation.
You can listen to meditative music or soothing sounds if you want. Breathe in and breathe out, relax, and try to keep your mind free of any thoughts.
7. Prioritize your hygiene
Just because you spend most of your time at home doesn’t mean you can take personal hygiene for granted. Taking a bath or showering regularly is a commitment to a cleaner and healthier lifestyle.
Also, brush your teeth at least twice a day. You should wear fresh and clean clothes every day, too. Ensure that your sheets, pillows, and other beddings are changed regularly.
8. Find time for entertainment
Entertainment is a way of relaxing, especially at a challenging time such as the one we have now. It’s a way of decompressing from the stresses of life. Always find time to pause and take a break for some fun and good entertainment. As long as you’re not spending hours each day sitting in front of the tv, watching entertaining programs can be good for your body and mind.
Watch your favorite shows or movies on TV, Netflix, cable TV, or any streaming service. You can also choose to watch videos on YouTube; be sure to select those that make you happy and feel good. Happy hormones can help improve your general well-being.
Listening to music is also a good form of entertainment. Want to go a step further? Try music therapy, which has been scientifically proven to help senior with cognitive function and stress reduction, among other benefits.
9. Spend time under the sun
It’s advisable to avoid going out in places with big crowds, but you can always go out into your garden or backyard. Spend at least 15 minutes every day under the morning sun (before 10 am, if possible) to get vitamin D, which is good for building your immune system – aside from keeping your heart, muscle, and bone healthy. It is also great for regulating your sleep, alleviating some symptoms of Alzheimer’s and dementia, and combatting depression. If possible, avoid spending long periods of time in the sun between 10 am and 4pm, the hottest part of the day. Better yet, be sure to protect your skin with a good SPF cream no matter what time of day you’re out enjoying the sun.
10. Eat a healthy diet and follow good sleeping habits
A well-balanced diet and at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep are essential for good health. Here’s what you should do to ensure that your diet and sleep are aiding and not undermining your health:
 - Eat on time
- A good and healthy meal: more fruits and vegetables, less salt, starchy food, and sugar
- Don’t forget to take your vitamins – and medications (if there are any) on time
Tips for getting a good night’s sleep include the following:
 - Avoid watching or reading anything that can trigger anxiety or negative thoughts before going to bed
- Don’t drink coffee, soda, or alcohol, and don’t eat close to bedtime
- Follow a regular sleeping schedule (ex. lights off at 10 pm)
- Turn off the TV and all gadgets and devices once you are in bed
The tips above may be simple ones, but they are vital to helping seniors like you cope with the health and safety challenges of Covid-19. Talk with your family members, loved ones, or your healthcare worker if you need guidance in your quest for a healthier lifestyle.

David Furlong (actor and director): "Performing arts do not die from being put online"
Tumblr media
Published in 'Le Mauricien' - 16th December 2020 / In Eng: May21 Interview by Dominique Bellier
Last June, we presented the play Great Experiment, presented by the British but above all multicultural troupes, Border Crossings and Exchange Theatre, of which our compatriot David Furlong who is the artistic director, and in which he also played a role. At the end of the year 2020, Exchange Theatre presented a children's show, The cat in reboots, an adaptation of Puss in Boots that brings Perrault's tale into the 21st century. The man of the theatre shares here how his company successfully weathered the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis in England.
How did you organize yourself with the lockdown and the COVID crisis to move from live performance to uploading? Was there a charge for viewing?
The announcement of the first lockdown was scary news in many ways: first we lost some freelance jobs (I was working on a show at Young Vic, which was suspended) and most importantly, we lost the use of our rehearsal studio, which we hier and where we also give our classes, our two main sources of income. So we immediately took a very diy approach to put our online theatre classes on Zoom. Our students followed us with confidence. They were very generous in their support of the company, so we offered to maintain their end-of-year performances anyway, but in the form of a web series broadcast on YouTube and Facebook. This approach offered us the perfect opportunity to try out these new formats for us, with amateur volunteers, without major financial risk except for a small multimedia production.
On the professional side, however, it quickly became clear that we could not produce an annual show in summer 2020. Fortunately, we had just shot Great Experiment on Mauritius and the Coolies, the creation produced by Border Crossings. We also had in store the live-recording of Sous La Varangue by Christophe Botti. As co-producers with both, it seemed obvious to us to perpetuate these collaborations and actively participate in their dissemination. It was a Mauritian diptych. Entirely free but limited in time, these screenings mobilized all our communication in the spring.
How many actors and technicians have you managed to support during this period?
We were able to get three artist actors and a technician to work. We also had a volunteer intern who did a lot for us.
Did you benefit from public or other assistance to cope?
At the time, we applied for an emergency grant to the Arts Council of England and got it, which allowed us to cover the rent and monthly salaries for the two directors, Fanny Dulin and myself. We were able to keep the studio and continue working without having to look for other jobs. This is also what allowed us to maintain real digital programming throughout the summer thereafter.
What were the health constraints of the resumption of indoor shows?
At the beginning of September, we were commissioned by the Institut français in the United Kingdom to participate in their annual Kids festival, indoors in mid-November, but in mid-October, while the show was being written, the second lockdown was announced. We therefore discovered the joys of theatrical rehearsals with masks, respecting physical distancing, as in other professions. Trying to overlook sanitary rules in the name of creation would have been meaningless when our work on the contrary wants to reflect on the present… Above all, we have completely rewritten the show for the online format. The scale of the acting, and therefore of the writing, has changed significantly.
How does online broadcasting change the game for theatrical creation? Isn't this contradictory with the very vocation of theatrical action and performing arts?
The shows filmed in public for broadcast online are simply "filmed theatre" with often very good recordings, though sometimes, it does not work: the level of performance, the staging or the vocal projection of the actors is unsuitable for the screen. But many companies and theatres have also been organizing the filming of plays specifically for replay for a long time.
What we did is closer to this exercise, with the added benefit that our show was conceived from the start for the camera, which involved a real collaboration with the director of the Institut français, Loic Lefrileux. For actors, this change of scale is no more complicated than going from stage to camera, which we already do in our profession. However, our shooting does not become cinema: we do not cut, we film in theatrical conditions, in one take, with several cameras.
In truth, the digital transition has only been accelerated by the circumstances. We knew that ultimately growing our audience and our impact would come online. And the Mauritian diptych made us realize how much! Sous La Varangue was seen by 1,400 spectators in one week (four times the number of spectators reached in six dates in 2015) and The Great Experiment, by 500 spectators in a weekend (as many as the 500 spectators received in a month English tour). It's a great way to reach more audiences. On the other hand, people who already go to the theatre will return once the venues open, and those who do not go yet, probably will not go either. Among the latter, there is a new audience that can become an "online theatre audience", just like Netflix viewers or “streaming on demand” customers.
Live performance does not die of being put online. The absence of an audience is a strange experience for actors, but it must be forgotten for the spectator. There are directors, and I believe I am, who work to recreate for the image this immediacy and this truth. Conversely, there are also frozen shows which feel already 'dead' in front of full houses. It is the process that keeps the shows alive, if it also keeps up with the times. And it's up to directors to keep the theatrical act intact. We think that's what we did with The cat in reboots.
How did you react to the tragedies which beset Mauritius this winter (the sinking of the Wakashio, oil spill, accident around the barge L’Ami Constant, etc.)? Did your colleagues also react?
I have been struck and suspended to the Mauritian news since these events, and personally I speak to my friends, my family very regularly, I read the press and I stay as close as possible. In the most recent headlines, I was interested to see how the public mobilization of Mauritians is in tune with global movements, which demand change, an end to injustices and systemic blockages.
As far as the company is concerned, we have made it our duty to relay information on our networks to alert our French and English audiences. The work we do has been political since the company's inception in 2006. We have taken clear positions on other subjects such as the refugee crisis (in 2015, one of our shows donated its profits to UNHCR) or on Black Lives Matter this year. In fact, The cat in reboots is a family show that addresses these themes very head-on and succeeds in talking about racism and systemic change to children.
How to follow you and help you from a distance?
Our Facebook, Exchange Theatre's page, and all of our social networks (Instagram, Twitter) and also by subscribing to our newsletter.

All's Quiet in the All-American Town
All is quiet in the All-American Town of Bellaire tonight for the most part. It’s the same as yesterday and the days and weeks before. For Police Chief Richard “Dick” “Flanagan and his officers, it’s not a “too quiet” type of quiet. But a good quiet. The city of Bellaire has been fairly calm the last few months in relation to callers for its village police force. It seems the coronavirus pandemic’s quarantine rules, social distancing, and closure of a number of businesses have kept residents indoors and off the department’s radar. Flanagan, for one, is not complaining. “As far as the police department goes, everything has just bottomed out,” relayed Flanagan when asked about any changes in the crime rate during the peak of pandemic quarantining. “Believe it or not, the people here have been complying with the mandates, so our activity and traffic and number of calls have really dropped off. “Crime has pretty much bottomed out, and there is no one out and about.” It’s theorized that during times of high unemployment drug crimes will increase as those out of work look for ways to cope with the struggle. There was also the fear of an increase in domestic disputes given the quarantine and stay-at-home style orders coming out of Columbus. So, was there an increase in drug crimes? Nope. Domestic assaults? That’s also a negative. “There was no uptick in domestic calls either, and that was one of the few crimes where you could actually take someone to jail,” Flanagan said. “Because of the rules, they were only taking violent crimes, but no, our domestics didn’t see an increase either.”
Tumblr media
The village park figures to see an increase in use as the weather warms and restrictions lesson. Flanagan and city councilman Donny Maupin assisted village maintenance worker Jim Smith recently in getting the grass in the park cut in order for the modified graduation celebration. Both Flanagan and Maupin were off and happened to be driving through with their equipment and stopped to help.
The Chief is Not Complaining
“I can’t speak for elsewhere, but here in Bellaire, residents were compliant with the mandates of staying in,” Flanagan said. “Other than the exceptions of people going to and from work and going to the store, I’m extremely pleased and happy with the way people here have complied with the governor’s orders.” That meant fewer traffic stops, less ticket writing, and likely to no one’s disappointment inside PD headquarters, less paperwork. But it didn’t result in less staffing per shift. All shifts were manned as needed as a somber atmosphere can shift gears to serious right quickly. Better to be prepared for any eventuality. “It was business as usual here at the department, regular staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Flanagan said. “The only major change is we tried to have as little face-to- face contact as possible. We also weren’t actively and aggressively pursuing traffic stops and moving violations. That’s not saying we didn’t pull people over, but if we did stop someone, it would be brief, a warning was given, and the officer kept his or her distance.” Calls that could be taken over the phone were answered, and officers were instructed to go into a caller’s house only if absolutely necessary. Flanagan noted there was only one death for COVID-19 in Bellaire, and he credited the Belmont County 911 center staff for giving his officers the proper heads-up to the situation. They were able to take the needed precautions prior to meeting the EMTs and county coroner at the scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both village staples like Gulla's and the recently established Sakura Family Restaurant have seen increased business recently as restaurants have shifted from carry-out only to a near return to pre-pandemic status. Flanagan knows as life returns to normal, his call sheet too will increase.
A Non-Everlasting Peace
Flanagan knows that the quiet isn’t going to last the summer. The phased reopenings, while still too methodical for many, show no signs in slowing down. Life is slowly returning to normal. Temperatures will rise and so will the crime rate at some point. “Whenever you get more people out and about and increased foot traffic, things will eventually return to normal,” Flanagan said. “But when you’re in the police department, you take the jobs as they come. Every call is different. “There is no routine traffic stop or routine call. Each one is different.”
Tumblr media
Responsible RestartOhio mandates also involve the pending start of baseball and softball season. While the chief noted he's not going to come and arrest someone for exercising their constitutional rights at a game, he's hopeful that spectators will follow rules. There is also a member of the force who coaches one of the softball teams who will be at the field a good portion of the time.
Added Duties?
Soon young boys and girls will be returning to baseball and softball diamonds and trying to salvage what little of their seasons they can. Those plans come with a set of mandatory best practices as part of the Responsible RestartOhio initiative. Players, coaches, and fans are expected to maintain the 6-foot social distancing rules at all time—in the players' case, only when not on the playing field. Fans can sit together if they are part of the same familial unit, otherwise, 6-feet away, and they also must stay off the playing field and remain a minimum 6-feet behind the backstop. It doesn’t take a lengthy YouTube journey to find that some parents can’t keep themselves off the playing field, and that was before the pandemic. Who’s ultimately responsible to enforce those rules and, if broken, will the police need to be involved? Flanagan said he’s not about to stop and arrest people for exercising their constitutional rights, but he did hope fans respected the rules and the game while watching. But at some games, there will already be police presence of a sort. Lieutenant J.J. Watson of the Bellaire Police Department is one of the softball coaches in town and will be on scene during a good portion of the games. In that, Flanagan isn’t too worried. "All the coaches, they are concerned with the safety of the kids, and I don’t think we’re going to have to worry,” Flanagan said. “Lt. Watson has been involved with kids' sports in this community for 15 years. He does that all on his own time and doesn’t get paid for it.” Read the full article
