what im wondering is if the aerolith board is the first generation. i really really hope not i think if it all shakes out that aerolith is a product of like 10 specific evil people that we need to simply kill i will be kind of disappointed bc ive been thinking of it as a company old enough for the board to have changed hands several times already... it isnt any specific evil person whos made aerolith what it is its an evil value system and set of beliefs yknow? its not abt killing the Bad Man its about refusing to believe in the need to "evolve" or "grow" the human race at all and until then no matter how "good" and "moral" and "ethical" you try to be you will at some point hit an ugly cliff. like because the "best and brightest" stuff that is the reason aerolith is evil at the core bc ultimately WHO decides what growth is and WHAT do those entities think of as growth?? answer quickly without being super duper eugenicist

i dont fully dislike them being two separate things on the poll(bc for some i really like/enjoy one more than the other) but i wish thered be a third option for both combined, since as u said its best viewed coupled up for these games. and even if i enjoy one part a bit more its still the mix of both making up the whole game experience :3

Right, games are a unique medium wherein your immersion and experience is dictated by a whole number of elements.

Whilst a story based game and a game with a pointless story can both have their own merits, I believe that the very best games are the ones that couple things like story/characters and gameplay together.

This is ultimately why several fire emblem games, notably the Jugdral and Tellius titles, are my favourites. The narrative is only heightened by the game itself. Sure, FE4's gameplay isn't terribly fun, but when it starts to click in with the overall narrative and create that feeling of conquest and going on an epic journey, it's the greatest thing ever.

This is something that since Kaga left Intsys, with the exception of Tellius, Fire Emblem has really been lacking in new games. It's largely all divorced.

And with things like second seals or whatever is going on in 3Houses' classrooms leading to units being able to be customised in any direction- it pulls away from the cast being able to have their niches of 'roles only they can do'. It further seperates the gameplay and characters.

Conversely, something like Modern Persona, where you get extra xp for your bonds, which have their own stories which foil and expand on themes presented in the main plot, couple together quite well.

Or tangentially, 999's puzzles are full of conversations and characterisation for the cast. Letting the two marry so well. And then it does THE THING? Peak fiction.

This has turned into something of a ramble, but I don't like people viewing things in a divorced manner, because it means you aren't looking at the media holistically and that's super important.
