I'm glad they resolved the romantic tension between Shinji and Kaworu by first confirming that Kaworu has, in fact, been trapped in an endless torturous time loop trying to save him but failing and dying and exploding so bad every time, and then having Kaworu be like "oh okay cool" and immediately lose interest and move on to his own shit the second Shinji develops some like well adjusted outlooks on life instead of being so fucked up all the time

So I learned about Signalis recently & it's made me realize this could be used to make one of the most fucked up crossovers especially if it's Evangelion involving KawoShin
Warning for mentioned spoilers
Elster & Shinji have love interests that have red eyes & white/grey hair, both are the cause of their partner dying.(Either mercy kill or cause Kaworu took Shinji's place by removing the choker meant to kill Shinji & put it on his own neck depending on the version)
It's also implied(in Signalis) or theorized(Evangelion) that they're stuck in some form of loop & depending on what happens(Promise ending for Signalis & the ending to the 4th/final film for Rebuild of Evangelion) the loop/suffering finally comes to an end.
If we want to get even further there's implications that Elster is either a copy made by the dream/reality warping or another Elster unit that ended up with a copy of Ariane's partner's memories.(If we get meta Replikas are technically programmed using past human neural patterns with Elster's implied/theorized to come from Lilith Itou with the Elster units being made off of a copy of a decommissioned Elster after losing the original copy of the neural patterns) Kaworu is a clone of the angel Adam & an unknown human.
Ariane & Kaworu showed Elster & Shinji kindness/care they hadn't had before due to being isolated for certain reasons* which led to them growing closer
*Elster due to it making her keep to how her neural patterns should be so she'll work as intended since Replikas are meant to do certain tasks & I guess the possibility of changing causes trouble for the nation, Shinji due to struggling to understand if people care about him partly thanks to his deadbeat dad that forced/manipulated him to be a child soldier
So because of my rambling examples of similarities imagine how fucked up it'd be if Shinji & Kaworu took Elster & Ariane's places. Doesn't matter if Shinji is Elster & Kaworu is Ariane of vise versa it'd be bitter sweet.

Hello, I've seen you have tackled the topic about if Kawoshin really is healthy or not in the past . Recently I just saw this claim that Kawoshin is actually too perfect and apparently that was the point: it was supposed to show that perfect relationships are not healthy or sustainable, compared to Asushin that could actually be healthy and realistic relationship because they both have struggles and had disagreements, despite being very different people they both suffered very similarly and they could grow as people and learn to love each other, while with Kawoshin there was nothing for them to sustain themselves. Now I don't wanna focus on Asushin too much outside from the comparison, but this raised a question: Does it make sense that there was some idea behind that Kawoshin has no real depht, it's dull and unrealistic so that's why it won't last? After all people often argue that that they literally just met and Kaworu also says they are the same so does that mean they can never advance?
Hiya!
Kawoshin being too perfect is sort of a pessimistic deal because Kaworu did something that was small and yet phenomenal at once. He sat down and tried understanding Shinji. Empathy in a world where people use you as a vessel for unhealthily processed baggage (and getting away with it) is a huge thing. Even then does the narrative not posit Kaworu as this heroic character that may as well be immaculate. He's portrayed as anyone else with their own subtleties.
It's a sort of pessimistic view that implies that simple kindness isn't possible in a world where people get away with proverbial murder. Shinji may have idealized Kaworu, but that doesn't make him perfect. The show drops breadcrumbs about how unhealthy idealism is bad for all parties!
Asuka and Shinji's dynamic isn't healthy due to their refusal to see the other respectfully. Episode 9 sort of foreshadows how their dynamic would go down as the series progresses. Having arguments and struggles doesn't make a relationship automatically healthy. Getting through them and actively communicating those struggles/empathizing however, is.
Kaworu and Shinji's relationship differs because the former wants to make the other happy. But even then the relationship isn't portrayed as this halcyon interaction. It's possible to have good intentions and miss the mark.
And about the 'advancement.'
You can (not) advance is a sly foreshadowing of the circular narrative of the Rebuilds. The can (not) titles slowly come together to portray the endgame's theme of cycles. Of how everyone's a victim of a cyclical narrative that can't be escaped from (via normal means).
Kaworu and Shinji's names are also listed in the Book of Life. Regardless of the timeline, they will always be destined together.

Kaworu: Rei, I need help.
Rei: What do you need help with, Kaworu?
Kaworu: Shinji told me to put my entry plug into his Eva, what does he mean?
Rei: *facepalm*

Evangelion 3.0 gave me serotonin at the Gay Piano Scene™ and then proceeded to crush my heart and soul for the latter part of the movie.
Screw canon, I want them to be happy

Is it known what Akira Ishida thinks of Kawoshin? It's easy to find out that Megumi Ogata only sees them as friends (although we should keep in mind that she generally doesn't see Shinji with anyone), but I can hardly find anything from him. The only thing I can find is this long interview about the third rebuild where he says that Kaworu's feelings for Shinji wouldn't change and when asked if you could see it as a love scene that Kaworu and Shinji control the Eva together, he just laughed and said he would leave it up to the viewers to interptetion. I'm just wondering this because I read a Japanese comment under a video claiming that Ishida disowned BL in a rebuild interview. Is there a general difference between BL and pure love for Japanese? Because I've already read some Japanese comments that said Kawoshin wasn't boy love but pure love. Sorry for the long text but I'm really confused and curious.
Ishida also talked about leaving his interpretation to the director. This could imply he did have an idea at the time but didn't want to say anything until the Rebuilds ended. I can't find anything myself in relation to Ishida's stance on BL in or out of a Rebuild interview. I also can't say about the difference between BL and pure love as my understanding of Japanese culture is somewhat shallow. I wouldn't feel right giving my two cents for the latter part of this question!
