trying again. im gonna talk about my ocs. its pretty long and kinda incoherent idk

first start with robin

- her name is robin wright and she’s 17

BACKSTORY

- her mom is a cyberneticist and her dad is a neurosurgeon. they do research on cyborg’s disease and have a company that makes prosthetics. they’re really rich because if it

- robin also had a twin brother named ronan (she’s the younger twin btw). he died when they were 15 because he had a rare case of cyborg’s disease in the brain. his death was so traumatizing for her that she doesn’t remember the months surrounding his death. she doesn’t even remember the funeral

- after ronan’s death, robin’s parents put her into isolation for two years. they pulled her out of her classes and activities and she barely got human interactions during this time

- eventually she had enough and begged to be allowed out which they do--as long as she has a bodyguard with her at all times. the problem? robin had a hard time getting along with most of them. in fact, ryuji is kind of a last resort. if she doesn’t get on well with him, she’ll most likely be isolated until further notice

random facts

- she’s really smart, a natural genius you could say. she was on her third year in college before she was pulled from it (she’s studying to be a neurosurgeon like her father). she’s one of those organized highlighter/color coded note takers too

- robin is a very compassionate person and is compelled to help others as much as she can.

- stubborn and determined, she’ll pursue nearly everything and won’t back down until she has answers. sometimes she doesn’t know when to stop and accidentally oversteps her boundaries. it’s not because she’s needlessly nosy but because she wants to know the whole story before she can help them

- she has a overactive imagination and would end up thinking up outlandish ideas to fill in the blanks of things she doesn’t know

- robin is one of those people who’s polite and reserved if she doesn’t know you but will talk your ear off when she’s comfortable with you

- she closer with her father, which is why she’s studying the same subject that he works in

- both of her parents are incredibly successful and she’s expected to do something similar so she has a lot on her shoulders

- she hasn’t worked a day in her life but she has unusually strong endurance and stamina

- she has a dog! he’s a golden retriever and his name is beck. he’s an old dog and she loves him very much

next is ryuji

- his name is ryuji lor and he’s 22

- he also goes by “ryder” (technically he’s supposed to go by that throughout most of my half-baked story because he never told anyone is real name but that’s beside the point)

- he’s a quarter japanese and three quarters se asian (not really sure what kind yet but im thinking somewhere within the vietnam/laos area)

BACKSTORY

- a bit of TW: FAMILY ABUSE in this passage so skip if it bothers you: his mom got pregnant with him while she was in college and because her boyfriend bailed on her and stress of the pregnancy and burnout she dropped out and went back to her family. she was seen as “the good one” of the family and was expected to get a good job to get her family out of poverty however when she came back they were incredibly bitter that she “failed” and would verbally and emotionally put her down. They also blamed ryuji because if he wasn’t born then she wouldn’t have dropped out and he was often ostracized because of it.

- fortunately he and his mom left when he turned 5. they lived in a small apartment and had to get lots of help from neighbors and friends to make ends meet (mostly to babysit ryuji while his mom worked). ryuji vowed to get smart and get a good job to give his mother the life she deserves (and partly because he feels a part of her really does hate him and he wants to make it up to her somehow because if he doesn’t, was he just a parasite like what his aunts and uncles said?)

- when he turned 10, his mom got married and how he has two moms. they’re hard on him but it’s from a place of love so he tries his best to be a good son by studying and staying out of trouble

- at 17, ryuji has a bit of hope ahead of him. he has a part time job, good grades, and maybe a scholarship if he could qualify. suddenly he’s diagnosed with cyborg’s disease in his eyes and arm. they can’t afford either of his surgeries, let alone one. and that’s not going into the prosthetics and rehab afterwards. at night when they think he’s asleep, ryuji hears his moms arguing about how they’ll be able to afford any of it and what they’ll have to do to pay for it.

- he can’t take it anymore. he runs away

- he ends up in a city he doesn’t recognize and is just allowing himself to die but he gets saved by irving, a back alley repair doctor. he gets prosthetics thanks to her but is now in a massive debt so he works as her assistant and also finds other jobs on the side to repay it

- his backstory is getting really long so things happen in ryuji’s attempt to make money and he ends up also working with ace, who leads an organized crime group, as a handler whose job is to fight/intimidate/kill whoever.

- a sudden coincidence also ends up working as robin’s bodyguard which starts everything. honestly he’s didn’t want to do this job at first but robin’s parents are willing to pay a good amount of money and it allows him to have time away from his jobs with ace

random facts

- he’s left hand but learned to be ambidextrous, however he’ll usually default to his left hand

- he wore glasses when he was younger (near sighted; it was super bad but he didn’t like it)

- he’s afraid of dogs. it’s not a full on phobia but they make him uneasy because of a childhood thing. (he’s more of a cat person and maybe pets a few stray cats that come across his house every once in a while)

- he doesn’t like people staring at him. he feels self-conscious because of the scar on his face and the shadowed bags under his eyes and people staring at him don’t help

- ryuji is really good with prosthetics repair and can go into in-depth discussions about the mechanics of it all; he actually really enjoys working on it and actually helped design his own arm

- he’s really smart but he had to work really hard to get there and because he never finished his education, he doesn’t really think he is either

- ryuji tries to give off a “i don’t care about anyone” bravado to try and distance himself from everything. but he really cares. like a lot. the few people he has in his life right now, he’s ride or die for them

- ryuji works himself to death to ignore his problems. he’s afraid if he stops moving, he’ll buckle under the pressure and stop forever

- he has a knife hidden in his prosthetic forearm which he will use if he feels threatened. (it’s probably a stiletto knife or something idk yet)

- ryuji is an early riser; waking up at 9 am feels like sleeping in to him. he’s not even that much of a morning person, its mostly out of habit

then there’s castor

- his name is castor oda and he’s 24

- he’s japanese

BACKSTORY

- he lived in a really strict and controlling family who owned a business where he had his entire life planned out for him up to who he was going to marry. he’s always been angry about it because he has older siblings who will take over the company and it’s clear that more of a control and image thing than anything else

- when he went to college, it was his first time actually be away from his family and became friends with a guy named ben.

- ben helped castor when his family kicked him out at 19 and gave him a place to stay until he could get back on his feet

- castor loved ben like a brother and is forever grateful for him

- ben mysteriously disappeared when they were 21 and everyone is pretty sure he’s dead but no one knows why

- castor wants to find closure on what happened because he’s definitely sure there’s something shady going on and he’s going to find out what.

- he’s an information broker, occasionally crossing paths with ace to relay and gather info but for the most part, castor has been working alone

- when he’s not doing that though, he works as a barista at a coffee shop

random facts

- he has cyborg’s disease in his right arm and when he lived with his family, he was deeply self-conscious about it

- he hasn’t spoken to his parents since they kicked him out but he still talks to his siblings sometimes; he’s the youngest child with two older sisters

- he always had an inkling that ben had romantic feelings for him, which was unrequited, and castor always felt a little guilty that he never reciprocated or that they never got to talk about it

- castor always wears his red scarf no matter the occasion or weather; he has more scarves but he just likes the red one the best

- people think he’s like calm and collected but in reality he’s an impulsive, emotional driven idiot just like the rest of us

- however he is the master of the polite business smile because of his strict upbringing

- he’s a rather disorganized person

next is irving

- her name is ellie irving and she’s 35

- she’s half black, half white

BACKSTORY

- i don’t have that much solidified for her backstory yet so it might change fyi

- irving had been doing cybernetic research back in college but someone plagiarized her work and submitted their paper before she came forward

- because the paper was published before she published hers, SHE was initially hit with backlash of plagiarism

- eventually they try to sort it out but in the end, while she proved she didn’t plagiarize the other, she couldn’t prove that she came up with the research first and they just terminated the both her and the plagiarist

- she was barred from going into higher cybernetics research and honestly she’s still a bit bitter about it

- she went into prosthetics repair instead but still struggled to find work because of her alleged reputation, which many still believed she stole another’s work

- eventually she manages to open up a shop that specializes in prosthetic repairs and replacements

random facts

- she’s really harsh and aloof, however she cares in her own way

- honestly irving doesn’t believe herself to be a good person due to how she feels she let herself to bitterly sulk in her anger for so long

- she smokes a bit but she’s trying to cut back lately

- irving won’t pry if you come to her with a broken arm and you need help; she’ll fix you up and leave it at that and allow you to come to her yourself

- she’s incredibly observant and can tell if your lying with just a glance

- she doesn’t know that ryuji works for ace; she’s concerned when he seems more tired than usual but she doesn’t know how to pry

last one cuz im tired

his name is ace (i don’t have a last name for him) and he’s 32

- he owns an organized crime ring; im thinking he’s connected to something bigger and possibly something with the black market

- not much is known about him but he’s a charismatic man and has the intimidation factor

- he flips his demeanor a lot. one minute he’s jovial and kind then the next he’ll give you thinly veil threats. he mostly does it to keep people on their toes so it’s a power thing

- begrudgingly he’s the closest thing to a father figure ryuji is gonna get

- also the jacket ryuji always wears? it’s a gift from ace

and that’s all i got so far! i have a lot more ocs but i don’t have have a lot of backstory for them yet. let me know what you think of these guys and feel free to ask questions!

Lets Talk About Neon Genesis Evangelion... And Why I Love It (With Pictures!!!)

Not a lot of people are going to read this and that’s okay. I have a problem, when it comes to getting attached to shows. The problem is I get REALLY attached. Like, I get emotionally invested in characters, locations, events, lore, everything. I’ve found that writing about a show, and how it makes me feel, helps me ease off this attachment.

Spoilers for the show below, even though its been out for longer than I’ve been alive.

So, I just watched the Netflix dub of NGE. This after seeing both the original Japanese dub, and the original English dub, and loving both of them. Generally, I liked the Netflix dub. I think the voice acting and dialogue has significantly improved in most areas. I’m not entirely sold on Shinji’s new voice actor, although they did such a wonderful job. I just think once you’re used to Spike Spencer as Shinji, its hard to hear it any other way. I have a few gripes though:

1. The pronunciation of NERV... I know... I know... it was changed to be closer to the German pronunciation meaning “soul” but “Nayerve” is as ugly as “moist”. It will always be “Nerve” in my heart.

The removal of swearing. In Japanese there is no swearing, so in the spirit of bringing the dub closer to the original, they removed it. However this is jarring in some spaces. “I’m the lowest of the low.” and such.

The removal of the gay subtext in episode 24... we’ll get to this...

So Moving on: EVA may not have been the best show to watch while locked up because of the ongoing pandemic. Like I said, I get ATTACHED, and this show, perhaps better than any other takes all the characters and locations you’ve grown to love... and it fucking destroys them. No mercy, at all. You like this character? That’s cool BOOM they’re gonna get emotionally destroyed just as things start going right in their life.

Nowhere is that better exemplified than in Shinji. Now this is a character I really relate to. Much in the same way as him, my relationship with my father was tumultuous at best, and down right abusive at worst. I joined the army to get away from it. I guess you can say the army was my NERV, but instead of a giant purple robot (although its not actually a robot, that’s not important), I got a gun and got to sit in the desert for a few years.

Shinji sells me so hard on this series. Its easy to say hes a wimp, or a weakling, or a baby, and that’s all well and good. However if you want a ra ra action series, go watch Gundam or something. Shinji is a person, a flawed person. But a well written, understandably flawed person. He’s spent his life abandoned, and struggles to make connections with the people around him.

I’m going to Largely skip over talking about Rei, Auska, and Misato, because they too have all been analysed at length by people far more qualified than me. Needless to say, I love them all for different reasons. Particularly Misato, the troubled parental guardian. Shes an incredible leader and especially for the 1990′s, she’s a fantastic female character.

What I will go into though, is EVA’s numerous side characters who I love dearly. Particularly one (1) boy:

I would die for this boy, and in Evangelion fashion, I would’ve had to.

Everyone, from the 3 officers that work under Misato in operations, to Shinjis Classmates Kensuke and Toji (Toji seen above), to deputy commander Fuyutsuki, Dr. Akagi, are all fleshed out, interesting characters who I love in their own right.

Toji in particular, “the jock with a heart of gold” is introduced at first, as a sort of antagonist. The first thing we seem him do is punch Shinji in the face. However, this wasn’t just in the name of being a dick, it was because (unknowingly) Shinji had injured his sister while battling the angels.

Skipping over some (excellent) character development, they become best friends and low-key, I shipped it. From there, he goes on to become an EVA pilot just like Shinji, but after his start up test, his EVA loses control. Infected with an angel, it goes on a rampage. Against his will, Shinji is forced to put down the EVA, severely injuring Toji. In the original draft, Toji was going to be killed in this incident, and instead got off “easy”... only losing a leg. I’m skipping over alot of detail here, but chances are if you’ve seen the show, you know whats up. If not, go watch the goddamn show.

At this point the show doesn’t pull punches. In fact, episodes 16 onward are known for being gut punch after gut punch, breaking our characters down, and only partially rebuilding them. Some never recover at all.

All of this continues until episode 24. This episode left me a mess... and that’s all before Kaworu even shows his face.

For context: all of Shinji’s friends are gone, evacuated. The thriving, vibrant metropolis of Tokyo-3 has gone from this:

To this:

Annihilated. All of it. The world we built up, gone. And there alone Shinji sits, at the empty pit that used to be a city... and he runs into Kaworu. In the white haired boy he makes a friend, his only one in the weeks after the city was obliterated. In the original English dub (here comes the controversy) Kaworu is the first person to tell Shinji that he is loved, and worthy of being loved.

This is huge! its a small glimmer of hope for someone who has just been crushed over, and over again. Now in the Netflix dub, this line is translated as “you are worthy of my grace”. Did it bother me? yeah. Was I able to look past it? also yeah. In the end it did the same for me.

However none of it is meant to last... Kaworu was an angel all along, and finally in what is technically the last episode of the series, after shinji has lost his friends, his home, any chance of a positive interaction with his father... he is forced to kill the one person who loves him.

FUCK

So episodes 25 and 26. I recommend everyone sit through them at least once. They help break down whats going inside shinji’s head during some key scenes in the movie: End of Evangelion.

End of Evangelion takes that destruction of everything Im attached to I keep mentioning, and dials it up to 11. We watch Nerv personnel get mercilessly gunned down, burned alive, or turned into fanta against their will. We watch Auska get horrifically ripped apart at the hands of the Mass Produced Evangelions... and we watch the horrifying destruction of humanity in perhaps my favorite concept for the end of the world... ever.

And after all of that... all of it... what happens at the end is mostly up for interpretation. Leaving me, tired, isolated, and bored, to spend my days thinking endlessly about this masterpiece of a show, its characters, and its world.

Listen, if you made it this far into my rant, thank you and I’m sorry. I definitely needed to get this all out of my system.

What is the colour of your hairbrush? Green and gray

Name a food you never eat: BLACK OLIVES CAN GO AWAY TO DIE. Nothing about them is remotely appealing to me. I’m working on learning to like mushrooms, but black olives will never ever EVER be something I try to educate my palate around.

Are you typically too warm or too cold? Too cold, almost always. I’m an iron deficiency anemic, and it’s one of my most common symptoms. If it’s 80 degrees F out and I wish I was wearing socks, I know I forgot to take my iron supplement that morning 😂

What were you doing 45 minutes ago? Making breakfast

What’s your favourite candy bar? I miss Galaxy chocolate bars so much, but if we’re allowed to qualify Reese’s as a candy bar... they’d be the American winner for me

Have you ever been to a professional sports game? LOL. I used to work for a pro-sports team. I didn’t miss a single Seattle Reign FC home match for 4 whole seasons. Plus, I grew up going to Mariners games with my mom. I’ve also gotten a local rep for being pretty reliable as an emergency national anthem singer, so... any time I get a call, I usually stay for the game! I miss getting to do that.. come back, sporting events!

What was the last thing you said out loud? I have to walk myself verbally through my morning routine before I’ve had coffee, so I probably said something along the lines of “don’t forget to set the timer!” so I wouldn’t abandon my French Press and forget the coffee entirely

What is your favourite ice cream? Anything chocolate related. I’m weak for chocolate.

What was the last thing you had to drink? Coffeeeeee.

Do you like your wallet? I adore her. I’ve had this for almost a decade now, and with the exception of a couple places where the fake leather has worn away, it’s still hanging in there. If the snap that fastens it together ever falls off, I might think about replacing it, but otherwise... old faithful and me, we gots a long journey together to enjoy

What was the last thing you ate? Scrambled eggs with hot sauce on toast

Did you buy any new clothes last weekend? Do new work shoes count? I bought a new pair of work shoes.

What’s the last sporting event you watched? I genuinely think it was the Women’s World Cup final.

What is your favourite flavour of popcorn? Oooo, I’m pretty happy with good ol’ salted. I like making popcorn on my stove with a little bit of olive oil and salt! If I’m feeling ambitious, I’ll make my own flavor mix with onion and chipotle powder to give it a kick.

Who is the last person you sent a text message to? My sister!

Ever go camping? I did when I was a kid pretty frequently, but I think it’s easily been 15 years since I last went. I have a group of coworkers that keeps wanting to plan a post-quarantine camping trip, and I’m being hassled into coming with because I’ve shown myself to be a little bit of a wizard with campfire cooking.

Do you take vitamins? Yep. I take an iron supplement (almost) every day to help with the aforementioned iron deficiency anemia

Do you go to church every Sunday? I did... and then I came out of the closet. I was very politely and unmistakably told I wouldn’t be welcome with my “lifestyle choices”, and so I left. I still have my faith, but there is a lasting grief for the loss of that level of community. I miss the music the most. I miss singing with hundreds of people. And yes, I recognize that they weren’t a true and faithful community if my queerness threatened them so much I was no longer welcome... but I still miss what that support felt like before I realized something felt wrong.

Do you have a tan? LOL. If I were any paler, I’d be giving Casper the Friendly Ghost a run for his money.

Do you prefer Chinese food or pizza? Ooooooo, tough choice. I live in my city’s International District, so I find myself with a luxury of choices when it comes to enjoying good Asian food. If this were asking me to pick between pizza and Thai or Vietnamese food, I think it would be a lot easier, because Thai and Vietnamese food would win out every time... but I’ll go ahead with pizza.

Do you drink your soda through a straw? I don’t drink soda, but when I did, no straw!

What colour socks do you usually wear? Black. I’m a barista, so the last thing I want is a drawer full of coffee-stained socks!

Do you ever drive above the speed limit? I don’t own a car, so when I drive, I’m typically either driving a rental or borrowing someone else’s... and I do my best not to speed when the car doesn’t belong to me.

That being said... sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants, and my heart has a need for SPEED.

What terrifies you? Fuck. Just about everything COVID-19 related? I had a stress dream the other night where I asked a customer to take a step back from me to maintain 6 feet social distancing and in the dream, the customer snatched my facemask off and spat at me, screaming how he had been diagnosed with the disease.

This thing is fucking terrifying.

.Look to your left. What do you see? It’s my happy light and my French press!

What chore do you hate most? I hate doing the dishes. Part of it is the nature of my job as a barista... the last thing I want to do after a day of dishes at work is to do more at home.

What do you think of when you hear an Australian accent? I think of one of the most hilarious and cool human beings on the planet: Lydia Williams.

What’s your favourite soda? I cut soda out of my life four years ago, but I had a weakness for Dr. Pepper as well as orange or strawberry flavored Fanta when I still partook.

Do you go in a fast food place or just hit the drive-thru? I usually order delivery

What’s your favourite number? It’s a tie between 11 and 7

Who’s the last person you talked to? My boss, as I was leaving work yesterday.

Favourite cut of beef? I am a girl on a strict budget. If I buy beef, it’s usually ground beef to be spread over four different recipes for the extra iron kick it gives me. I genuinely don’t know enough about other cuts of beef to know what my preference would be!

Last song you listened to? I wake up every morning to David Bowie singing Underground from the Labyrinth soundtrack

Last book you read? The last book I finished was a reread of Lady Knight from Tamora Pierce’s Protector of the Small series, but I’m slowly working my way through a really extensive biography on Eleanor Roosevelt.

Favourite day of the week? Sundays.

Can you say the alphabet backwards? I can, only if I can sing it! My dad taught me when I was a kid.

How do you like your coffee? How much time do you have? 😂 Seriously, that’s a dangerous question for a barista. If I’m making coffee at home, I usually just cut both hot or iced coffee with some half and half, but if I’m ordering at my home store, I start to get a liiittle bit extra. I’m obSESSED with nitro cold brew. It’s heaven in a cup. I love love love it. I fell in love with the pumpkin cream cold foam we added to it during pumpkin spice season last year. We have marshmallow syrup back for the S’mores frap, and I’m having fun playing around with different ways I can add it to my cold brew fixation.

I also will eventually be doing a coffee crawl for the tour company I work with, and I’ll get to do coffee tastings with black coffee in a lot of the stores we stop at, and during my training, I’ve come to really enjoy that a lot. I can’t wait for the city to open back up again so I can continue doing tours!

Favourite pair of shoes? I have a pair of bright yellow birkenstocks I absolutely adore

Time you normally get up? Before quarantine 2020, I almost always slept in to at least 9:30 (I work late nights at my Starbucks) but oddly enough, my schedule has shifted so much I’m waking up naturally around 7:30 or 8:00AM these days. It’s weird.

Sunrises or sunsets? I am NEVER awake for them, but sunrises. Always, always sunrises.

How many blankets are on your bed? A LOT. Like five or six. I get cold easily, and I like the weight of them, especially since I’m always in chronic need of cuddling, and I’m alone in my apartment. The blankets work as a good stopgap.

Describe your kitchen plates. Creamy white with a navy blue border

Describe your kitchen at the moment. Pretty clean and organized, although I need to sweep. I have a bunch of knick-knacks on my counters, different teapots, decorative containers, cookbooks. I like a pleasantly cluttered kitchen with just enough space for me to prep meals. Minimalist kitchens give me a headache.

Do you have a favourite alcoholic drink? I gave Brienne my favorite drink in Water Cools Not. I’m a sucker for a blackberry bramble. I like almost any gin cocktail, tbh. I also am brave to admit a love for spiked seltzer water. I am a White Claw bitch and I’m proud of it.

Do you play cards? I love sitting down and playing solitaire. It’s almost meditative for me.

My family isn’t allowed to play competitive card games anymore because my mom got too aggressive playing Spoons. 😂

What colour is your car? INVISIBLE

Do you know how to change a tire? Not a clue, but that’s what the internet is for.

Your favourite state? I’m a sucker for my home-state of Washington. I’ve lived here all my life, and it’s one of the most gorgeous places on the planet, in my opinion. I love its complicated history, I love that I live in a city continuing to strive to be a place all people feel welcome, and I love that I can walk 15 minutes and I’m next to open waters. (There’s a reason I love being a tour guide so much. I get paid to gush about how much I love my home for an hour)

Favourite job you’ve had? I came within weeks of my first paid gig as an actor this summer before the pandemic hit. When I cash my first check as a performer, that’ll be my favorite job. Until then... I adore being a tour guide, and I also loved my work for Seattle Reign FC while it lasted. I’m glad I’m not dealing with it anymore, but when I had that job, it was the best job on the planet. I got to meet Megan Rapinoe and Kim Little and fucking MARTA through that job, I got to help little girls pick out their favorite player’s name for their jerseys, I got to sing the national anthem in front of thousands for the first time... yeah, it was a great job when I had it.

How did you get your biggest scar? I don’t have any BIG scars, but I have a lot of tiny ones on my hands from stupid moments at work where I wasn’t paying attention and I got burnt by hot water or something. I guess technically if you consider a tattoo a scar, I do have a tattoo! It’s the Relay for Life symbol, to the left of my heart.

Donning the dark blue jumpsuit, you almost mistook him for an engineering technician if not for your immediate supervisor, who later on introduced you to him. Changkyun said there was a very noticeable spark in your eyes the moment he introduced himself as a "space traveller", but you argue that, actually, you were rolling your eyes. And it was love at first sight.

Or, at least, that's the version you and Changkyun tell your friends and family whenever they ask about the story of how you two met, because the real version was far too embarrassing.

In reality, you met him within your first week at the space station. Changkyun became your proof that, indeed, light travels faster than sound, because the first thing you noticed is the barpin attached to the left side of his chest. Astronaut, the pin read. And for a science geek like you are, astronauts were the Einsteins and the Newtons and the Galileos of the modern age. They were, to your standards, at a god-like level. And it didn't help that your father used to be an astronaut. You've met astronauts before, of course – you recognized even some of them as your father's colleagues – but nothing could ever compare to the feeling you've had after meeting one for the very first time in a long time, and it just so happened that the very first astronaut you meet is Im Changkyun.

For your first week, you've heard all sorts of things about him – about how he was around your age, only older; about how he was an aeronautics genius, having qualified for the position when he was only nineteen; and about how he rarely ever talks to anyone, despite knowing almost everyone in the station. And while you see him sometimes around your department, you remained in your own orbit of endless paperwork and debugging.

Being fairly new on the job, you were the object of all menial tasks that your superiors wouldn't want to get their hands on. And, wanting to prove that you bagged the position based on your credentials and not your last name, you stayed behind the first few days to be able to keep up with the backlogs left behind by your predecessor. You felt proud of yourself, knowing you were surrounded by people who understood the real nature and significance of your line of work – that is, until Friday night when everyone had rushed home even before the clock struck five.

The entire floor was silent, except for the occasional sound of the printer from another office and the tapping on the keyboard as you were finishing up the codes for a test project. Solely focused on your work, you didn't notice how the machine from next door stopped in the middle of a printing job. You only realized this when Changkyun brought the printer to you himself.

"Hey," he said, making you almost jump in your seat from surprise. His eyebrows were furrowed behind his glasses as he looked down at the printer cradled in his arms, like a father bringing his sick child to a doctor. "You know stuff about printers, right? Could you help me out a bit?"

Standing up from your seat, you noticed wires trailing behind him. "I'm sorry, you must be in the middle of something," Changkyun continued. "It's just that everyone's gone home and I can't find anybody else but you to help me."

"It's okay," you managed to croak. Although slightly annoyed that he thought you could fix all computer hardware problems being a computer scientist, you let it go, convincing yourself that he didn't really have anyone to ask help from.

As you flip the printer over and open the cover, the boy behind you looked on with curiosity. Light travels faster than sound, because Changkyun looked smart until you heard him ask, "Do you know where cows come from?"

"Huh?" you asked, peeling your eyes away from the printer you were disassembling and looking back at him.

Changkyun wore a straight face when he replied, "From the Milky Way," as if he was expecting you to laugh. You only blinked back at him, confused, and carried on with fixing the printer. It turned out that he only ran out of ink, and assuming he was doing loads of paperwork, you guessed he would need more, so you gave him handfuls of new ink cartridges. After you taught him how to replace the cartridge, the astronaut went well on his way, lugging the bulky machine with him. It was only when he left that you realize he was telling you a joke, and a bad one at that.

So Changkyun himself debunked your own view of him as someone you should idolize, because the next few times you saw him, you realize he is actually a kid in a man's body and not the god you've made him out to be. He had swivel chair races with his fellow astronauts on their free time. During lunch, in a tray full of glasses of orange juice and iced tea, he was the only one who asks for a carton of milk. And every single time he would pass by you, he never failed to tell you a joke which was, most of the time, godawfully space-related. Sometimes his jokes were too scientific you don't even understand them. But, still, Changkyun persevered. He was determined to Google all possible jokes in hopes of finally making you laugh.

The day it did happen, Changkyun wasn't even joking. He brought you along with him, for "part two of your orientation", on a loaded spacecraft that was ready to disembark at any time. As he was busily tinkering with the cupboards, which he called space cabinet, one of the doors hit him smack dab in the middle of his face, taking him by surprise. The look on his face was too much for you to handle, causing you to burst out laughing. And it shook his soul down to its core. Because this, he realized, was a black hole he was never getting out of.

When you calm down a few seconds later, you exhaled deeply. "To be honest, I've never been inside a rocketship before," you said, taking small, careful steps and fighting the urge to touch the controllers.

"Yeah? Why would it be weird? A lot of people have never been inside a rocketship either."

"If you consider the fact that my dad was an astronaut, then yeah, it's pretty weird."

Changkyun's eyes widened. "Your dad was an astronaut? Why didn't you tell me before?"

"Well, he's pretty... well-known for being an astronaut."

He gasped. "Is your dad Neil Armstrong? Or Buzz Aldrin? What Apollo mission was he in?"

"The Apollo 21," you whispered, causing Changkyun's excitement to quickly die down.

"You mean–"

"The rocket that never launched, yeah."

Both of you grew quiet afterwards, and the silence inside the spacecraft was deafening. It ached to be even thinking about your dad again, and although you knew working in the same space station as he did would only make you remember him more, you knew it was the closest you could ever get to being with him again, so who were you to pass the opportunity up?

When your gaze met Changkyun's, you saw him open his mouth, as if to say something in consolation. But you didn't want him to feel bad for bringing the subject up when, really, it was something you've grown to accept. So you tried to bring the mood back up by saying, "Hey, do you know which planet keeps remarrying?"

The boy immediately turned to look at you. "Huh?"

"Saturn," you replied.

This caused the left corner of Changkyun's mouth to twitch. "Right, because of the rings," he said, letting out a tight laugh. With a wave of his hand, he motioned for you to follow closely behind him. "Well, that was a nice attempt, but can we both agree that I'm the only one who can do the jokes from now on?"

"Whatever you say, space boy," you responded, shaking your head in disbelief as you followed him out of the rocketship.

Pretty much everyone in the station assumed you were dating, so it wasn't a big deal to be actually dating Im Changkyun. Dates with an astronaut weren't all that different compared to dates you've had before with regular college guys. More often than not, you dated over work, especially on days he didn't have aircraft training. He would drop by your department and always manage to find an excuse to stay.

"I don't understand a single line of code. Can you please dumb it down for me?" he asked as he burst through the glass doors of the office, bringing with him folders of the printed source code of the latest robotics experiment.

You narrowed your eyes at him. "Did you just waste ink on that?"

Changkyun's eyes widened at your accusation, and he clutched his chest as he gasped. "Me? Waste ink? Just so I would have an excuse to come see you and flirt? What do you think of me, the best boyfriend ever? I'm offended, [Y/N[," he said dramatically, clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth in disapproval.

In fear of getting scolded by your superior, you rolled your eyes and got on with the task, anyway, laying out the code line by line. Your boyfriend, who was acting as if he didn't develop the software himself, knew when to nod and hum in approval to make it seem as if he were learning something completely new.

Once you were done, you frowned after seeing Changkyun staring at you intently. "What now?"

"Nothing," he explained, making no move to gather his papers. "I just noticed how you sound so hot when you talk smart."

His remarks earned him a slap on the arm, and as you shooed him out of your office, you made him promise not to come see you there, in fear of getting reprimanded.

So instead of the office, dates were conducted in the station's observation deck, especially during Friday nights when you were the only two left behind in the office. But for this random night, however, you were surprised when Changkyun came a little more prepared. In his casual clothes, he led you out towards the deck, which had a good view not only of the city but also of the clear, night sky. Thinking it was the same as your previous dates, you were taken aback after seeing your favorite snacks atop the blanket laid out on the floor.

"What's this?" you asked, already halfway through kicking your heels off and settling into a comfortable position on the floor. "You didn't do anything bad, did you?"

Your boyfriend was quick to defend himself. "I did not!" After a short while, though, he added, "Not really."

You frowned, patting the space beside you for him to occupy. He took his shoes off and crawled behind you, spreading his legs far apart enough for you to settle in between. "Bad news?"

He nodded, handing you the bags of snacks he brought. Resting his chin over your shoulder, he gave your head a reassuring peck. "But tell me about your day first."

"You can't tell me you have bad news and then ask me about my day," you sighed, turning to look at him.

"Finish all the snacks first," Changkyun said. "And then I'll tell you."

He had a stern look on his face, so you knew better than to disobey, even if your curiosity was killing you. You obliged, popping each snack open one by one, as he constantly asked you questions to keep you talking about your day. Once you finished, you pointed at the empty wrappers on the floor by your feet and looked back at him. "Now, can you please tell me what's going on?"

Changkyun hesitated, but made sure not to look into your eyes when he said, "They're sending me off on a mission."

"Do you want one?" he asked out of nowhere.

You frowned. "I thought I finished the last one?"

He flashed a small smile. "Not the snacks, silly," Changkyun said, squeezing your hand and, after a while, added, "I meant the exoplanets."

"I thought they're sending you off to the moon?"

"They are," he assured, glad that you had your back against his chest and your gaze fixed on the night sky so that he didn't have to see the sad look on your face. "Just... there's no mall in space. I want to get you a present for when I come back. There's no signal, either, so I won't be able to answer your calls to tell you I'm coming home for dinner."

"You're not even coming back," you replied, voice breaking by the end of the sentence. And suddenly you were eight again, watching as your father packed his bags and listening to him talk about how his trip to the moon is going to be like, as if it were as simple as a trip to the park. Twelve moons, he said, and twelve suns – that's how long you were supposed to wait until he returns. But thousands of moons and suns have come and gone and he was still nowhere to be found.

"I will," Changkyun protested, holding onto you by the hips so he could force you to face him. "Thirty-one suns and thirty moons. By the thirty-first moon, I'll be right here with you, I promise."

"Promise me."

He frowned. "I already said I promise."

"No, promise me with something else."

"Ya– weren't you listening? I already told you I'll get an exoplanet for you!"

You were crying by this point, but the look on his face was too funny that you couldn't help but laugh, so you let out a few giggles, sniffling afterwards. "You're just saying that to cheer me up."

"I am, and also to assure you I'm coming back," he said, using the pads of his thumbs to wipe your cheeks. "Now give me a name. Make it sound less complicated, okay, not like the usual 16 Cygni Bb crap they've been calling planets these days."

"What about Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?" you tried, fixing your composure because you know you can't be selfish enough to ask him to stay for you.

His eyebrows furrowed. "That's a mouthful."

"You just said not to make it sound too technical."

"Fine," the boy huffed. He wiggled his shoulders in an attempt to be cute and spread his arms out wide. "Now come kiss me, I'm upset I lost this argument."

So you did, peppering his lips with soft pecks. And when Changkyun pulled away from the kiss, he wore a mischievous grin across his face. "Ey, you kissed me! You like me, don't you?"

"Shut the hell up, space boy."

The day of Changkyun's launch, you held him a little closer, a tad bit tighter. You only stepped back when people from the media made their way towards him to ask him a few questions. Trying not to cry, you pulled yourself together and also pulled him towards you for the last time before he left.

"I'm not gonna die, mom," he said, voice so soft and warm that it made your eyes water a little.

"I know, just..." you sighed, swallowing the lump in your throat that threatened to rise as you squeezed both his hands. "Just come home for dinner, space boy. I'll be waiting." And before your tears spilled, you stood on your tiptoes and kissed him.

It didn't take long before he had to go, with the rest of his crew almost dragging him towards the ship. You made sure you stood by the spacecraft with a fire extinguisher on hand, because if there was one thing you were good at, it was at never committing the same mistake twice, and no launchpad failure was ever going to cost you another loved one. Heartbreak for you came in the form of a countdown, and you held your breath as the rocket launched. The ship skyrocketed to the heavens in a matter of seconds. And it was only when the station received transmissions from the spacecraft that you were able to breathe again.

For an entire month, you felt like a lost astronaut drifting aimlessly in space, anxiously waiting. For an entire month, you became a proof to Einstein's Theory of Relativity, because every single day felt like a century. So to distract yourself, albeit momentarily, you focus all your attention to work, trying to get as many projects as possible done by the end of every shift. This technique seemed to work well for you, because you mixed up the thirtieth moon with the thirty-first sun after pulling an all-nighter at the space station.

With your head over your mouse pad, you woke up to someone shaking your shoulder. Knowing it must be the maintenance personnel again coming to wake you up so they could clean, you waved it off and turned your head the other way. The shaking continued however, which caused you to groan in irritation.

"Please just let me get ten more minutes of sleep and then I'll go, I promise."

"Houston, we have a problem," the voice replied, and you know exactly who it belonged to. You would recognize this voice even if it were lightyears away. And as you were frozen in place, he continued, "I know you asked for Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious..."

The grogginess left your mind as you lifted your head up and glanced behind you. And there, sitting on the swivel chair, was your space boy holding up a certificate with a small golden seal on the bottom right corner. He looked distraught, as if he had been told that the Earth was actually flat.

"...but I was only allowed to name it Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious II. Is that okay?"

In your happiness, you jumped at him, immediately wrapping your arms around his neck as you pepper his face with kisses all over. Changkyun stumbled back, surprised at the sudden weight, but managed to find his footing as he leaned back against one of the desks.

"Welcome back to Earth, space boy."

Buenos Aires Calling!

The signs could not have been much better: My first ‘vacation’ lasting more than a week since the awesome festival so called “gneven im grünen”, three concert tickets for my more or less favorite band ‘die toten hosen’- a band I have followed along down the road, which not only makes good music but also supports smaller bands, ethical correct NGO´s and sometimes even play in your living room if you are lucky AND the promising city of Buenos Aires, which goes as the Berlin of South America, or not even Latino American anymore. So my expectations were quite high as well, still they s were exceeded...

My hostel was great, although I arrived way too early they welcomed me with breakfast and showers. As I did not take the first internet recommendation I ended up in a 100% spanish-speaking community, from which a few studied and others sadly escaping war in Venezuela and some others doing whatever. Crazy those two things, first I could never do my exchange semester out of a dormitory, as I already troubled falling a sleep when not completely wasted- how do people snore louder than a airplane taking off? Second why have we reached the point that people need to escape their homes again and shouldnt we welcome them a little more than given them a bed in return of work? You find Venezuelans everywhere in South America right now...

Anyway, I wanted to get to know this European city, which at first glance showed off with nice facades, broken sidewalks and a walkable traffic situation (remember Im used to Lima at the moment, I actually got quite a cultural shock when people actually followed traffic rules and not everyone looked quite similar). I did a walking tour, and right away I saw it at its best, stunning buildings and cemeteries everywhere(at least in the right suburb..) Btw the popularity of their steaks is based on the flatness of the countryside of Argentina, cows actually do have some space to walk around and not need to be cooped up in some stall. Afterwards, I stumbled around myself, and by this is into a huge demonstration. All kinds of human protested in favor of rights for everybody, especially Woman and the LGBT scene. Every of the last ten years more than 200 women has be mudered by their husband or partners, I have heard about it before, but seeing the demonstration showed me how serious the issue is and how many must have suffered domestic violence. I followed along and was quite impressed by the creativity and number of participants. It seems like still the authorities dont really care, as this has been run for over a year now...

Rushed from the energy of the protests I had a buncher Spätibeer (cerveza de ciosco) and decided to go see my friend from my old exchange semester in good old fresno..So we met 9 years ago and havent seen since. Ines were just working in a restaurant and I already had a few beers too many. So after she invited me for two more I tried too call it a night, which is always hard when you in a foreign city for the first time 10km away from your bed and trying to go by public transport. AllI know, I woke up in my hostel the next day and some blurry memories sitting in some other bar with some Germans, but I dont know why. Alright lets face it, probably the craving for more beer.

In the morning, I realized today would be the day I have never really imagined to become true. Seeing “Los Hosen” in Buenos Aires is said to be special. I always wanted to know what´s about it, because special is also sitting one hour in the” Berlin Ringbahn” and drink beer or the Chinese Wall, but neither gets a lot of my attention. After another day of enjoying various parts of the city I went in front of the venue, Museum, a buncher years ago crashed the stage in the second song and the concert was over. The first guys I approached were already a win in the lottery and I could not have asked for more. Spätibeer here and there and talks about everything what my Spanish has to offer. The show was crazy, a venue like SO36, long and narrow. A small terrace all around from which Campino (singer) jumped into the crowd and somehow mad his way back, totally red, as people did not want to let him go...A few punch were needed so he reached the stage again.

The crowd of 800-1000, of which maybe 100 were German, freaked out at pretty much every single song. Decent singing along but even harder dancing along. Everybody full of energy, led by a Band which noticeably enjoyed to be part of it once again. After the concert I went further to a few more Bars or you could call it Club even, energy for those after concerts partys I usually do not have after concerts in Germany. This night, I got a ride home, across the entire city, letting somebody out at the bus station apparently is no option when you their “guest”.

Party people

The same reason, the next day, I was invited to a match of one of the biggest football teams over there.. Boca Juniors, it was really interesting to see such a steep stadium which shacks because everybody jumps and how fascinated all the players and fans are. But I certainly have friends which can analyze those events way more. Side note: Argentina has stopped to allow fans of the visiting teams for all league games, in order to prevent violence. A working approach, but defiantly not in the sense of the sport.

A couple more or less boring hard working days for my uni were interrupted by a Cover concert and even more interesting of a Concert of the Magic Mystery tour show in a house in Buenos Aires. You can apply ahead and if you lucky the Hosen come to give a show and the fans possibly destroy all you have. I talked to many people who at least once tried it, but these gigs are quite precious. Getting inside this house was not possible, but through same delays in my taxi I arrived for the last few songs of the concert, which was totally sufficient for me. Except the drummer, everybody got outside of the house once and of course Campino climbed every fence there exist on the premises. Afterwards, a little party in front of the fence took place and once again a intercultural understanding with hands and legs. Knowing a few words of Spanish certainly made the situation even more fun and allowed me buying beer in the cioscos around, which was hard as for some reasons they only wanted to sell cold beer, but to understand this I almost failed.

Campino not only gave its best during the show, the aftershowparty he won against everybody!

Wow Wednesday already, but still two more official shows to go! The German Hosen fans, organized a bus tour to the town of the next venue, La Plata, which is 1-2 hours down south from BA. Ive almost missed the bus, due to lets face it: Hangoverness but also Credit Card issues, during which I kind of realized how screwed you could be in a foreign country. But all worked out and with 1 hour delay and a busdriver who ask after 1 hour ride where he actually supposed to head we were almost at our first stop: The barbeque party in some Argentina´s house. The owner just decided to through a party for everybody who wanted to come and as it was somebody´s birthday the owner bought beer and steaks for the most of them. (unluckily no grilled cheese, but this time people were at least to buy warm beer in the Späti next door) So i tackled my hangover from last night with a few beers and it become a really nice get-together with people from all parts of society, ages and regions of Germany and Argentina. The good bye was a kiss for the woman living there for everybody and the last existing steaks as “Schnittchen” for later. When was the last time you invited 70 unknown people to your backyard and when it comes to cleaning up they all get in a bus and you give them food and beer for the road? Arriving in front of the venue the people once again couldnt even wait to party on and sang along the sound check inside which was with the song “Reisefieber”, so an old and popular one, this was promising. I dedicated myself to socialize and to the Späti´s around so once inside It starts to be more of a blur...I remember a few songs, some crowdsurfing, an amazing venue as very wide, once again energized Hosen, more beer(in cans btw) and a few special acts. Is there anything more to ask for? Claro, afterparty, but this is even more of a blur...With many more beer and whatsoever for everybody who was tired or just wanted to be sure to make it a good night we drove through la plata and some other parties over there...At some point i recall 7 people, from which I knew 1 slightly before but good times. At some point at 6 or 7 we returned to BA, I was already sleeping in the car for a while. But the others were still going strong not being tired at the moment. Such a day, no shower, one more sip of beer and straight to bed. I reckon I will never get closer to Punk rock than this before.

Days with the most drinks, usually the ones with the fewest pictures for me ;)

Next day started slowly, ended slowly but again a Coverband concert, Peru tied Argentina, so know it´s very interesting who is going to qualify and another day I made a nice tour through the party area of Palermo with two new friends. The show on Saturday was in a huge venue of 5000-7000 people. The living room of the Ramones, they said. Many other guest, setlist switched again and At least the first third of the concert everybody went crazy once more. With forgoing time, people got more relaxed and only half of the stadium jumped along..I mobilized my last strength and had an amazing time. Meeting people in the crowed I have met during the last week and giving them a possible last high five or smile.

Los hosen more or less announced the location of the aftershow party: the club we went the week before but I called it a night in some bar close to my hostel. A friend gave me his sweater to show once more how welcome I am here. Lots of promises of reuniting in whatever part of the world were mad and at some point I went home to my Hostel. I´m not sure if or when I will see this city and especially all those nice people again. But the times, friendlyness and in all kinds of situation and circumstances they gave me here will always be reminded in my brain and my heart. I now understand when los Hosen say they do not come for the music, they come to meet the people, I seldom received such a warm welcome of different people in various situations in several forms. As always I hope to be able to return the favor in a place where I can show people around and gave them a good time, but for now I can just say thank you!
