The river Weser ran between the Roman and Cheruscan forces. Arminius came to the bank and halted with his fellow chieftains:— "Had the Caesar come?" he inquired. That brother, Flavus by name, was serving in the army, a conspicuous figure both from his loyalty and from the loss of an eye through a wound received some few years before during Tiberius' term of command. Walking forward, he was greeted by Arminius; who, dismissing his own escort, demanded that the archers posted along our side of the stream should be also withdrawn. When these had retired, he asked his brother, whence the disfigurement of his face? On being told the place and battle, he inquired what reward he had received. Flavus mentioned his increased pay, the chain, the crown, and other military decorations; Arminius scoffed at the cheap rewards of servitude.

They now began to argue from their opposite points of view. Flavus insisted on "Roman greatness, the power of the Caesar; the heavy penalties for the vanquished; the mercy always waiting for him who submitted himself. Even Arminius' wife and child were not treated as enemies." His brother urged "the sacred call of their country; their ancestral liberty; the gods of their German hearths; and their mother, who prayed, with himself, that he would not choose the title of renegade and traitor to his kindred, to the kindred of his wife, to the whole of his race in fact, before that of their liberator." From this point they drifted, little by little, into recriminations; and not even the intervening river would have prevented a duel, had not Stertinius run up and laid a restraining hand on Flavus, who in the fullness of his anger was calling for his weapons and his horse. On the other side Arminius was visible, shouting threats and challenging to battle: for he kept interjecting much in Latin, as he had seen service in the Roman camp as a captain of native auxiliaries.

there's a lot going on in there! Arminius switching to Latin is a detail that always makes me feel a deep kind of sadness, especially with how it's preceded by mention of their mother. I wonder what she thought of what became of her sons, on opposite sides of everything but still, inescapably, brothers. even when they want to kill each other. there sure are a lot of fucked up and unhappy brothers around. and Arminius asking about Flavus' injury............I also had a whole thing typed out about the horror of imperialism and colonization and the trauma of assimilation but I think this sets the tone better

Pondering Sniper with his Emotional Support Scout (AU)

Modern+College AU speeding bullet

Both in their early transitional age (Scout is 19, Sniper is 22), they’ve already spent a handful of years, supposedly taking the steps to build their futures, but are they where they want to be? Are they going to where they want to be? Where is it anyways?

I just had the idea for a more grounded side to their story, slice-of-life in a coming-of-age setting, with themes of existentialism. I aged them down to make it work… Under cut for info dumps about these goobers 8)

Scout took a break right after high school, working for his family business (an unsuccessful one, ran by one of his oldest brothers). This used to be a summer job, a way to get extra money as a kid, but now he’s been a full time worker for 2.5 years, familial obligations exploiting him to stay, while being undermined by his narcissistic brother. He eventually gets out of it, but has to face the hurt from being used, and also the fact that he had to grow up so quickly as a kid (especially when he has to deal with the fallout caused by his Mom’s and Spy’s affairs. He and his Mom are in good terms, it’s just his Mom isn’t a good support system atm). Left to face the real world by himself, he tries to find a way to stabilize by himself, while trying to face his trauma (trauma from a missing father figure, and being treated as the black sheep of his family) as he finds a way to be more himself and be happy. He’s optimistic and responsible when the world calls for it, otherwise he’s most likely to test this new freedom (for better or worse). Eventually Spy comes around to try to reconnect with Scout, there’s no telling how Scout will cope with it when he’s in the midst his new-found freedom.

Sniper went straight to university, never once took a break from the school work, because he thinks that’s the only way to go about in life. He took up a program and career plan that was not right for him, but struggled his way through by retaking course’s countless of times, pulling off impossible all-nighters, etc. At some point he gave up, began to drop classes every semester, and finally quit the program. However, he started working somewhere in the industry he had been studying years for. He thought this could bring him forward, but it kept digging him a deeper grave. He’s a workaholic, impulsive, but lost. At a very young age, he was a subject of a tough custody battle between his neglectful biological parents (Lar-nah and Bill-bel), and his grandparents (who are Mr and Mrs Mundee in this AU). From that, his guardians want him to be better than his parents, and in return he strived for that. However, after giving up, he feels like a failure and is currently going through a period of depression. However, with the money he earned from his job, he wonders if he should take that road-trip he used to fantasize. He told himself doing this will help him find himself, but a part of him wonders if its just him trying to run away from something. Either way, he’s got a deal for a junk RV and he wants to renovate it!

After all that, Scout and Sniper meet, their lives are in the cross roads, and their relationship is a turning point as well. It feels like the world is moving faster than they can cope with, but can they find some respite in this new relationship together? DUN DUN DUUUN

Phew this was really fun to write! I really like their dynamic, romantic or not (idc). Them being the same age range inspired me to write this, because I know myself and some friends have gone through this similar experience aswell, and I just think its fun/interesting to explore that with they have in cannon.

A lot of this projection tho lmao with a loose base derived from cannon, and some embellishments to make this AU work.

I'm thinking about completely disengaging with Fandoms as a whole and just, create things for Fandom and shove them into the void.

American fandoms especially have become a toxic cesspool of bullshit that's only been getting worse and worse, and this is not what fandom used to be.

Fandoms used to be freaky and weird. Fandoms used to be more loving and positive and loved expressing themselves! And I'm sure any fandom that was created in the political climate of old would have been exactly the same as the other fandoms within the political climate of old, and I desperately wish some of my current fandoms were older ones.

But I guess I'm tired of denying that the political climate has drastically changed. A few people I've talked to agree that the puritanical bullshit fanpol started spewing really ramped up after America elected President Trump and you know what? That makes a lot of sense to me, especially upon remembering the "Gays with Trump" political campaign that was probably a paid promotional campaign to make people forget Trump was very homophobic.

It sort of feels like that with Fanpol--they’re thinly disguised conservatives with a gay hat who refuse to re-examine themselves and perpetuate puritanical morality abuse (that's abusing someone with morality, btw, I.E. telling them they're an awful person to control them into behaving how you want) through their interactions with Fandom as a whole.

I've noticed the trend in the V3 fandom (though the oldness of the DR fandom in general kept this modern puritanical nonsense at bay for a decent part, but even later on in the fandom's life cycle I noticed it getting pretty bad) and the Genshin fandom especially--and no, the Genshin fandom isn't just "more toxic" than other fandoms, it's that fandom as a whole has become a breeding ground for toxic and abusive people who think seeing the words "Hey don't tell people to KYS" is a fucking red flag.

So... yeah. I guess I'll be looking for alternative ways to consume fan content, and try not to engage with fandom as much. There isn't really much I want to actively engage in anymore, anyway. Idk, maybe I should make content I enjoy and ignore mostly everyone else. Who knows?

back at it again with another batshit dream I had but last night I was on a beach with my sister and brother-in-law, some random background characters, and eddie fucking diaz (chris was there also) and we were just hanging out on the sand but then some prehistoric alligator-dinosaur-sharks started jaws-ing people in the ocean and eddie swam in to get chris out (he was fine) and so we all went to the hotel that was for some reason right on the beach because it wasn't a great day for swimming I guess. (my sister and her husband didn't appear in the dream after the beach and I'm assuming they got gotten by the shark things but I don't know). and then we were hunkering down in the lobby for a while until we started hearing screaming and chaos and explosions outside and we looked out the windows to see that cordyceps (tlou) was breaking out and there were zombies everywhere and some were trying to break into the hotel so we all ran into the stairwell to get away from them and from there we started fighting our way up the hotel levels (it had 7 floors) and we lost a few people and had to lock them in rooms since we didn't have any guns (but eddie and I had katanas for some reason, and so he took point in the stairwell and I brought up the rear in case anything came after us) and as we went up, we all started to get to know each other. there was a very kind elderly woman who had recently been through a nasty divorce who had gone on vacation to this beach to try and recover, and she held chris' hand on the way up the stairs since eddie was busy protecting the group from the front, and she gave everyone little peppermints from her purse to keep spirits up. there was a little kid who was learning to draw and I showed him some tips and tricks during our breaks. we were all helping each other and protecting each other and we were close-knit family by the time the dream ended (I miss them). by about the 5th floor it was pretty clear that the whole world was ending because 911 wasn't working and nobody could get ahold of anyone outside the hotel, and from the windows we could see the chaos unfold like a spreading rash. the 6th floor had the prehistoric alligator-dinosaur-sharks for SOME reason (they were hopping around on their flippers which should have been funny but in context it was TERRIFYING) and eddie and I had to slice them up with our swords so everyone could get past them. we had to fight our way through a horde (miraculously nobody got bitten or scratched) until we reached the 7th floor, and the elevator that would take us to the roof so we could get picked up by one of the rescue choppers that were flying all over. (how the elevator was working when there was no electricity, I have no idea.) we tried to fit everyone in at once because like I said, we were family now and didn't want anyone left behind, but there were so many of us that we had to split into groups. I went in the first group w my katana in case something was on the roof, and chris, the drawing kid, and a few others came with me. eddie stayed behind to go with the second group since he had the other katana, and the nice peppermint lady stayed too. we got to the roof to find a few other survivors, and sent the elevator down for everyone else, and the second group got up with no trouble, and a few minutes later the helicopters came. and the very last bit of my dream was a slow camera pan over the entire destroyed city, and the camera stopped on a view of another building (an apartment complex) a few blocks over from the hotel, where the cordyceps had first broken out. the blinds were tattered and torn, the windows broken, and there was blood and bits of gore all over the blinds and walls and broken glass. and then I woke up in my dark room feeling like a zombie or alligator-dinosaur-shark was gonna jump at me from outta nowhere and I have to just live like that lmao
