deep breaths, kai. deep breaths. i’m prepared to lose more followers for this. so let’s discuss this ask, shall we?

i could go on and on and on about the different microaggressions or racist stereotyping I have experienced as an Indian (common culprits are ‘where are you REALLY from?’, ‘you’re so pretty for an indian girl’ or, in terms of stereotypes, the ‘indians all run pharmacies and smell bad’ and ‘all indians have poor english’ [i speak gujarati at home fluently and am learning both spanish, hindi, mandarin and korean, excuse me if my english is not perfect] which probably require another post altogeher) but I’ll keep this focused on what you were probably referencing; my post about white mh activists not uplifting POCs.

there is a distinct difference between being offensive to white people (not racist, offensive. you cannot be racist to white people as white people have never historically been marginalised, nor has your race ever limited any opportunities for you. the dictionary defines racism as: prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalised.) and pointing out the faults in a system built specifically for white people, by white people; a system that still refuses to give POCs the same privileges as white people. were you offended by me saying that white mental health activists should uplift and give platforms to POCs who suffer from mental illnesses instead of talking over them?

Generations of systemic and institutionalised oppression and racism by a system built for white people by white people to benefit white people warrants some kind of frustration, doesn’t it? if you’re offended by someone pointing out the flaws of almost each and every system in society, (I’m quoting Hank Green here), ‘that’s probably because it’s messing with a power structure that benefits YOU’.

time and time again POCs are systemically oppressed in every walk of life. be it in the justice system, the medical sector, hell, even in the job market... speaking of the job market, i bet you didn’t know that the University of Oxford conducted a study that sent out around 3,000 false job applications for all kids of jobs; their study found that if you’re BAME (black, asian or minority ethnic) you have to send out 60% more job applications than your white counterparts. if you would like to read the study, you can find it linked above.

as @fruityutas said, black women are twice as likely to die in childbirth than their white counterparts in the US (in the uk, it’s a fivefold higher mortality). seeing as it’s current, let’s discuss covid-19, shall we? if you’re a POC in britain, you’re more likely to die from covid-19 than a white person.

think i’m making this up? have a look at what Public Health England have to say about it.

“An analysis of survival among confirmed COVID-19 cases shows that, after accounting for the effect of sex, age, deprivation and region, people of Bangladeshi ethnicity had around twice the risk of death when compared to people of White British ethnicity. or, alternatively, if you’re sick of hearing about covid, how about the fact that the NHS is slow to respond to health problems that disproportionately affect certain ethnic minority groups? POC patients that require treatment for hepatitis B, myocardial infarction (heart attacks), hypertension and diabetes have to wait longer despite having similar symptoms to white patients.

sick of the science? how about we talk about the fact that doctors from BAME backgrounds are less likely to be promoted to consultant posts in the NHS than white doctors? BAME doctors are also more likely to experience bullying and harassment as well as face more complaints and disciplinary actions.

Now, let’s discuss what i’m guessing prompted this accusatory ask; the disparities in incidence of mental illness in BAME communities versus white communities. Compared to white people, black women are more likely to experience anxiety disorders or depression, south Asian women are at a higher risk of suicide and black individuals are more likely to be sectioned under the mental health act in the United Kingdom.

“…People from BAME backgrounds told us that some of the barriers they face when accessing mental health care are:

cultural barriers where mental health issues aren’t recognised or aren’t seen as important,

language barriers

professionals having a lack of knowledge about things that are important to a person of colour or their experiences,

white professionals not being able to fully understand what racism or discrimination is like,

lack of publicity of mental health support and services in some communities,

stereotyping. For example, some white people think that black people with mental health issues will get angry or aggressive, conscious and unconscious bias, and

stigma about mental illness in some communities stops some people of colour seeking help. They can feel ashamed.”

White people will never be able to understand what it is like to be a POC, just like how a cishet person will never know what it’s like to be LGBTQ+ . Comparing the experiences of a white person with that of a POC is like comparing apples and oranges (I group POCs together for the sake of argument; of course I, as an Indian experience privileges that a black person does not experience).

In spite of the greater incidence of mental illnesses in BAME communities, white people have an easier time accessing mental health care than us POCs. coming back to the argument that white people will never be able to understand racism and cultural issues that can lead to mental illness, which, as i’ve said before, is looked down upon in POC communities coupled with the notable lack of BAME therapists and psychiatrists means POCs who have the luxury of accessing therapy will more often than not have to discuss their issues with someone who will never be able to relate to them.

but i was offensive to white people because i said white mental health activists talk over the already-suppressed voices of POC activists. okay.

man im so fucking angry I'm shaking

somebody I trusted a lot really ripped into me the other day and accused me of lying about my life and mental health. they even had the nerve to bring my PIP claim into it saying "it can't be that corrupt, my application got fast tracked with no evidence!!"

well... a) that person is in the system already under a designation that i don't have that means they often recieve priority attention and more help, and b) that person is not getting any fucking PIP money either. they haven't even been to the assessment appointment. how about you SHUT UP until you've been through the whole process and actually got cash coming into your bank account? yes, it's piss easy to send off a fucking form, what's HARD is being listened to and taken seriously by the pos assessor and the DWP!! there are people out there who can't fucking WALK having their motability scooters and cars taken off them because they can hobble 50m with a cane, and that's with a disability that is immediately visible. do not fucking start on me.

like if they do get their PIP first time, fucking great! that's how it should be! but it only takes a fucking google to find stories of people with LITERAL CANCER being denied disability payments in this country, never mind the attitude within the system towards mental health. this week I've seen MULTIPLE headlines about universal credit forcing women into sex work. the UK benefit system is fucking broken. and how the fuck can you think you have any authority to say that kind of shit without having been through the whole process first?

i just can't fucking believe what they said to me. i'm so fucking hurt and upset that my head is just swimming. i know i'm fucking lucky to have the support already I do, but that's because I put the fucking work in, went out there, and got it. just because i'm drowning in less water than somebody else did doesn't mean i'm going to stay under the fucking water when i see a fucking life ring nearby, i'm going to use all the strength i have left to kick off for that shit. this isn't a fucking game with a cutoff for a winning score in Trauma™. i'm not about to force myself into a job just because somebody else is working harder than is healthy when i've been given a fucking MEDICAL LEAVE from university, in order to get my shit together, so that i can go back and hopefully build a new and actually sustainable life for myself for the next 70 or so years I have. we all look fucking different and different things fucking hurt us. you can't use your experience as the Only True Benchmark for Suffering, and you CANNOT tell another person what they have and haven't lived through. that's fucking absurd.

in a way I'm not even surprised. this same person cut off another friend of theirs not that long ago, really fucking viciously, accusing them of lying too with no indisputable evidence. i was kinda sus about that, did my best to trust her bc they knew that person better than i did, but from then i've had "am I next?" in the back of my mind. i guess this resolves that question.

i'm ESPECIALLY pissed because they ripped into me in ways that i KNOW hurt them the most. whether they were in an emotional state or not that was fucking intentional, and downright cruel. and it's not just me who thinks that was fucking cruel. it's kind of telling when somebody who's fucking paid to listen to people with problems says you "don't sound like a nice person."

i was fucking looking forward to growing older next to that person and seeing where our lives went, but not any more. some nerve calling me toxic, which i freely admit i can be, when you're fucking blind to the toxicity of your own comments. didn't think for a second "what if somebody said this to me?" i don't need that shit in my life

I don't know if you're necessarily being dramatic... If you're feeling this then you're feeling it. It does sound shitty and stressful. It sounds like you're in the year in school which is equivalent to being a senior here in America? Grade 12? Am I understanding this correctly? Idk but I DO remember college/university applications and exams and school and everything being utter shit my senior year. School gave me, and a lot of others in my grade/class, minor or major mental health problems, 1/2

especially bc of this ridiculous project we all had to do. I was aiming to get into the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, one of the top universities in the state. I did, but I decided to go somewhere else less prestigious bc I felt it would fit me better. School is important to me too! I almost had an anxiety attack both today and last night over hw! Odds are I would have already had a meltdown if I’d gone to U of M bc it’s SO competitive and academics oriented! (Frick it’s actually 2/3)

But anyway I don’t know your situation EXACTLY but I do want you to know that we’re here for you and we want what’s best for you. ❤️❤️❤️ (3/3 There we go)

Some more: education systems make me angry a lot. I was talking to my friend from Kenya and my fuck… She has some major shit to say about some of the stuff in the education system in her country. But yeah your teachers are being shitty and presumptuous and yeah it sounds… shitty! you’re right to assume my grade ;; rn I’m in the UK and doing A-levels/A2s which basically determine whether you get into your uni of choice or not (or if you even qualify to going to high up uni courses)

education systems are a mess everywhere apart from one of the Scandinavian countries (I can’t remember which one it is rn) but their education system follows a structure which you could legit apply to your life? like, maths isn’t taught as an entire separate subject but is incorporated into life skills of money handling and cooking through measuring ingredients. with an education system like that, people actually BENEFIT from school

ugh it just makes me angry at this point.

I dont think the monetizing on your mentally ill page is a bad idea, IF you do it the right way. I think the idea behind spreading the word of mental illness, raising awareness and destigmatizing it is what we need to do. If selling buttons or stickers or shirts or what have you to sell accomplishes this goal then go for it! I would buy a pin that says " __awareness" I would NOT buy a pin that says "SOS my girlfriends bipolar" BUT ur smart and you get it so I doubt you would do that anyway lol

Well considering I have bipolar and bpd and am currently battling stigma from MH professionals yeah I just i see on redbubble the site i use for my vegan designs. Like I looked up bipolar some of it was just horrible like there was these his and hers tops and it was basically correlating bipolar gf w/ crazy etc and i just...idk i find it in v. bad taste especially since i found no evidence to suggest this person has bipolar or any mental illness that is heavily stigmatised. I understand using dark humor to cope but i feel if you are going to sell on the nose dark humor related merch it should be about a disorder you personally have. You know? Also i would not sell even dark humor stuff that uses the word crazy in reference to bipolar. Like when I say dark humor and stuff i mean like i used to follow a blog called self harm shark and some ppl sent it hate saying it glorified it and such but honestly it helped me on tough nights not to cut/not to feel less alone i actually felt less crazy because many user submitted stuff I could relate to and its one of those things where you might think youre alone in feeling this or that and you realise youre not and that is sad sure that someone else experiences it too but it is relieving to know youre not the only one it makes you feel less crazy bcos u realise its not just you so its almost like not normal but its not like youre the only one who experiences it therefore you just idk im not good at explaining it just makes me at least feel less crazy etc. But yeah i mean..idk i just think yeah certain things shouldnt be joked about and i feel like if youre not suffering with said mental illness or dont have a relative or partner or anything with said mental illness you shouldnt really even consider making dark humor or on the nose jokes/humor/memes to sell etc. Cos it comes off as more well..do you actually think that? Are you stigmatising us or thinking these things? Are you trying to make a buck off mental health but you dont care about the mentally ill? You know you just never know someones intentions. I know like for example i woudlnt want to buy vegan merch off someone whose not vegan who doesnt believe in the vegan lifestyle..when I could buy a vegan pin or magnet or coaster set etc from a vegan trying to work hard to make a living its just yeah... I have some designs in mind actually that i have already created for bipolar and mental illness. I actually have one saying my mental illness is not your adjective or something like that. I do have one i created that says ‘bipolar af’ i created it when manic and now ive come out of mania im not entirely sure if its a good idea to sell it or not? I mean im not sure if that is like idk if the as fuck bit makes it sound bad or if it could be misinterpreted and seen as like..the whole using it as an adjective thing like what if people buy it who are like buying it to like use bipolar as an adjective in that terms like you know how people say the weather is so bipolar or quite often bipolar is used to describe someone who just has mood swings or someone who people might define as highly strung or ‘crazy’ idk im not sure if the AF bit makes it seem like thats how its gonna be viewed. I mean to me idk I guess it was just an idea of a shirt or pin etc saying hey im bipolar and you know im not ashamed but in less words...idk if youve noticed but im extremely like anxiety riddled and so worried of being seen as what i despise and that..like worried my designs or words might be misinterpreted or that i might have like a dark humor post or something and maybe it is abit too on the nose or that people might be upset about it or so on. I dont know because no one can police how someone copes with their illness but it is different when that person it putting it out there for sale on pins and stuff you know? I am currently working on deciding if i do it through Teepublic/Redbubble or if I use this local manafacturer I found in Leeds (im from good old britland lmfao or brexshitland) Which might be more costly because Idk that i’d be able to afford to bulk buy the products..i mean I could always do like a uhh thing where whats it called where you have a campaign and you set a limit/target so you say once i reach 100 sales i’ll buy the product and ship it out kinda thing? But idk because i mean what if it takes literally a year to reach 100 sales and people dont want to wait that long. So im not sure...i mean I could do a gofundme maybe but idk how that works..or how to set it up. I really want to focus on my Mental health blog and socials and that combines with my poetry as much of my poetry is mental health related and so recovery related too. So my poetry is less of something i really need to worry about maintaining because i write when i want to when i get inspired or when I need to vent to keep my mental health in check. So i just do it off the cuff as and when and post it to my poetry tumblr. I have over 500 pieces stock piled that I just need to schedule to my WordPress site. So thats not an issue. So I guess right now I need to work out where to focus iike Mental Health stuff or vegan designs for my Rb or what I could do is just dedicate a day a week to the vegan designs on redbubble as its not very time consuming to create the designs. And then I can upload them like as and when maybe just spend an hour a day uploading designs and making a new instagram post and sharing that on facebook and here. So then I have 6 days minus an hour a day to work on my mental health stuff which is my main focus and passion tbh. I guess ive been delaying it because ive been strugglign so much lately ive felt like a fraud or felt like i’d be a fraud preaching happiness and recovery and talking about things to help yourself during depressive episodes etc when i was just mooching around watching tv and just feeling blah...you know? I just..I dont know where to start with the mental health stuff and im so afraid of failing and fucking up or being judged and people thinking i suck or like recently i got accused of faking my mental illnesses from a guy in a UK businesses networking group..he sent me a tirade of hate and how he was gonna shame me for being a fake and claimed he had borderline PD and bipolar too and how hes learnt most people fake it and take advantage of the system put in place to help people really mentally ill luckily the admins removed him from the group..but its just..it really got to me you know. My biggest thing is being told im faking it because so many people think borderlines fake their mood shifts because we change happy to suicidal in seconds or at least i do sometimes at my worst..its just hard..i get it can seem attention seeking because we over react to minor issues and arguments but thats literally the definition of our disorder. we are emotionally unstable and we think and like evrything to us is in extremes i love to the max i get angry over reactive to the max i ahve extreme fears of abandonment triggered by slight changes in my relationships w/ people things others might not even pick up on.. idk i got a lot to say and dont know where to start! haha but thank you I will definitely look more into creating mental health based merchandise..
