This February I completed, for the very first time, an art challenge, more specifically, a 30-day challenge. I did the @ellolovey doodle a day challenge, where she posts a list of words every month and the idea is to create a doodle for each day. In the past, I failed to complete the challenge because my illustrations were too complicated to finish in one hour. This time, what I did was to try and keep it as simple as I could, and to force myself to not be a perfectionist.
So, when I had time, I did simple sketches. I would sketch as much as I could to try and get ahead, and then each day I just colored them in.
This helped me in a lot of ways. It helped me to draw more loosely, and to find a more consistent style and palette on my Instagram account. This helped me to gain more followers and more exposure, and even lead me to sell prints and to get a contract to illustrate an album cover.
I didn't do March's challenge. Although I was proud of myself, I was tired and some days were too just much pressure.
However, I decided to do April. More followers. More likes. This time, I decided instead of choosing my own palette, to use the one proposed by @ellovey, which presented more of a challenge. Curiously, I found that the posts with most likes were the ones I didn't like that much. Now, I am convinced that I really need to get out of my comfort zone and try different (and more risky) characters, expressions, and colors.
It doesn't need to be perfect, because rather than a good perspective, or good proportions, or a perfect drawing, the most important thing in art and illustration is what you, as an artist, are able to transmit. The feeling that you are trying to transmit.
These are my 9 most liked illustrations from this month so far. I highly recommend challenges, because they are a great way to learn.

This illustration was inspired by a rainy day combined with a fall season. I realized how the shape of pumpkins and umbrellas are similar, so I tried to play with the design and the composition in a simple way, giving a touch of irony to the storytelling using one of my favorite characters “La Urraca” #iluzmarie #fall #rainyday #rain #pumpkin #reven #urraca (at Austin, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkWNrtdvPxP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

With this heat in Texas, everyday I see families through my window going to the pool, this inspired me for a series of 3 illustrations that I’m working on. “happy summer everyone!”

Brushes Affair
Everybody has a story to tell.
Since I was a kid I have been always fascinated trying to understand what a picture can tell me, how people is able to say too many things through simple strokes.
I have been drawing and painting for 20 years now and I still love to explore diferent ways to transmit an idea. I wish I could have more time to be sticked to my art supplies to look for ways to say what I want to say, and I know I am not alone, this happens to most of my artist’s fellow, juggling between work and life.
Cheers!

I love the way using technology makes it easier to modify things in my illustrations in order to make them better.
I was working on an illustration about a boy and a girl in a clock’s shop and @marshariti looked at it and suggested I add cuckoo clocks... what a great idea!!!!
The acrylic painting was completed, so if it wasn’t for the magic of the iPad, adding those cuckoo clocks would mean I would have had to start all over again, instead, I decided to paint them separately and then add them to my scene!
I love how they turned out by themselves.
Here is the process, and the difference between the acrylic paintings and the corrections made in Procreate. As you can see the finished product looks more detailed and well done, but the traditional painting express the color and texture that complements the uniqueness of the pieces.
