Scotland Fix of the Day: Something about the dramatic landscapes of Scotland has lured me back – over and over – and transformed my seeing as I sought to discover the life-forces at work in these living landscapes. Light and weather were main actors, of course, but over time I found myself seeking a broader cast of characters, geology and time, tectonic forces and human passions. Gradually I’ve been gathering these thoughts — and pictures — into a body of understanding as I sought to recognize what I had been working towards. For lack of a better name I’ve come to call it the Dramatic Landscape, a way of thinking about landscapes that were integral parts of my National Geographic storytelling, whether about places or about environmental issues. I’d like to invite you to witness this journey as I present The Dramatic Landscape for Viewfinders Live on Thursday, November 3. Follow the link in my bio or go to ViewfindersLive.com/events . #repost @wolfconservationcenter Urgent Repost from @wolves_of_the_rockies: When the Wisconsin Board of Natural Resources reviewed the department's recommendation for this fall's state-mandated wolf-hunt, they ignored their own department's recommendation of culling 130 wolves. While this number is unacceptable to begin with, what happened next is even worse. The DNR's board voted 5-2 to slaughter 300 wolves starting November 6— more than 2.3 TIMES the initial recommendation. This despite testimony from experts, the indigenous community, and residents who all pleaded with the appointed officials on the board to make a conservative decision supported by science. Join us in our efforts to #relistwolves by sharing this video and visting the link in our bio to put pressure on Washington to add the gray wolf back to the ESA immediately. “Frans Lanting has been hailed as one of the great photographers of our time. His influential work appears in books, magazines, and exhibitions around the world. Born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, he earned a master’s degree in economics then moved to the United States to study environmental planning. Soon after, he began photographing the natural world–and never turned back.
For three decades he has documented wildlife from the Amazon to Antarctica to promote understanding about the Earth and its natural history through images that convey a passion for nature and a sense of wonder and concern about our living planet.
‘Frans Lanting has set the standards for a whole generation of wildlife photographers,’ according to the BBC. ‘Mr. Lanting’s photographs take creatures that have become ordinary and transform them into haunting new visions,’ writes acclaimed field biologist Dr. George Schaller in The New York Times. ‘As a chronicler of natural history today, Frans Lanting is a singular, extraordinary talent,’ says Thomas Kennedy, former Director of Photography at National Geographic. [...]
Lanting’s work has been commissioned frequently by National Geographic, where he served as a Photographer-in-Residence. [...]
He has lived for months with seabirds on isolated atolls in the Pacific Ocean, tracked lions through the African night, and camped among giant tortoises inside a volcano in the Galápagos.Lanting did pioneering work in Madagascar, where he documented wildlife and tribal traditions never photographed before. His celebrated coverage of the Okavango Delta in National Geographic has been credited with inspiring a surge of international interest in wildlife and conservation in Botswana. His photo essays about rainforest ecology in Borneo, emperor penguins in Antarctica, and the troubled fate of puffins in the North Atlantic, have been featured in publications around the world. Images from his yearlong odyssey to assess global biodiversity at the turn of the millennium filled an issue of National Geographic.
Lanting’s mission is to use photography to help create leverage for conservation efforts ranging from local initiatives to global campaigns, through his publications, alliances, public appearances, and active support of environmental organizations. He serves as an Ambassador for the World Wildlife Fund Netherlands, and on the National Council of the World Wildlife Fund USA, as well as on the Leadership Council of Conservation International, and on the International Board of WildAid. Lanting is a Trustee of the Foundation Board of the University of California Santa Cruz, and is an honorary Director of the Friends of Long Marine Lab. He is a co-founder of the North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA) and a Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP).” -’about’ http://lanting.com

Environmental Photographers Research task
Photography can do huge service in two ways. It can expose environmental problems like nothing else can, and it can help raise awareness and get people to care more. The stakes could not be higher. It is ridiculous to think that we can destroy so many of earths plants, animals, and ecosystems and not think it can happen to us.
The first environmental photographer I researched was Paul Nicklen
Paul Nicklen is a Canadian photographer, filmmaker, and marine biologist. He has received 30 of the highest photography awards in his field. He works for National Geographic as an assignment photographer. He is also famous for being a conservationist.
He and his partner, Cristina Mittermeir, founded Sea Legacy to change the Narrative around the oceans and create emotional connections between people and the mysterious underwater wildlife. Paul has amazing underwater photographs. As a professional diver he also captures terrestrial animals. Here are a few of his images below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second environmental photographer I researched is Daisy Gilardini.
Daisy Gilardini is a Canadian - based Conservation photographer from Switzerland. She specialises in the polar regions. Her photos are mainly of the Antarctic wildlife and North American Bears. She has visited over 70 countries and joined over 80 expeditions to Antartica.
Daisy’s work has received prestigious awards internationally, including BBC Wildlife Photographer of the year. She is a member of the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP), Sea Legacy, and the royal Canadian Geographical society. She focuses on conservation and the importance of preserving what’s left of nature.
Below is some of Daisy’s Images

Bibliography- Carr Clifton is a nature, wilderness, landscape photographer. He started his career using a 4x5 film camera, but now uses a digital one. He is from California and he is currently 64. He has a commercial photography degree that he obtained in Colorado Mountain College in 1979. He wrote 3 books, such as Hudson: Family Records; New York, images of the landscape; California, Magnificent Wilderness. He started photography and also color printing in 1979. He took inspiration from Philip Hyde, another landscape photographer, which was his neighbor. He gave Clifton advice and mentored him. Clifton spent 35 years exploring, documenting and photographing wild landscapes. Sooner or later Clifton became a member of the ILCP (International League of Conservation Photographers). His images has appeared in many conservation publications. He won four awards such as the Theodore Roosevelt Association Founders Medal and the International Color Award.
Bodies of Work- Both projects take on Cliftons simple idea of photographing a beautiful place with a large background scenery. In Changing with the Times, Clifton says “Im aiming more toward just the visual: not telling a story, not describing a place, but just making a great photograph”. I think he does this well with image 1 giving the audience a beautiful photo to look at with many colors that give off a warm emotion for the audience to feel such as the white snow against the sunset. In Landscape Masters Through Time, along with other photographers featured, he continues with his previous statement in his last body of work with just aiming for the visual, disregarding the story behind a photograph. These images are his ‘traditional’ style, looking for a landscape and “take what is offered”. Another example which works for me is the last one, showing the flowers and how their colors of the petals pop and stand out in comparison to the dark dim background of the pond. I enjoyed looking at both bodies of work and I like how he rather people just take in his work and enjoy the beauty of things than trying to interpret his message or intention of it.

Environmental 360 - Research
14.10.2021
What is Environmental Photography?
Environmental photography deals with documenting and introducing our surroundings.
It’s often a tool for raising awareness of important environmental and conservation issues like climate change. This niche focuses on the relationship between nature and humans.
The focus can also be on social issues, addressing problems that affect communities.
Environmental photographers can be photojournalists, biologists, wildlife photographers, conservationists, and people with different professions concerned about their environment.
Influential Photographers
Keith Landinski is a Colorado-based, Emmy-nominated director and contributing photographer at the National Geographic Magazine. His environmental photography puts natural history and climate change in focus. He aims to document our ever-changing planet. Besides focusing on environmental issues, he has amazing photographs of extreme sports and famous advertising campaigns.
He is a founding member of the Sea Legacy Collective, and he has earned several awards and honours internationally. His work has been featured in more than 100 cover stories of different magazines, such as the New York Times.
Tumblr media
Cristina Mittermeier is a Mexican-born photographer, marine biologist, writer, and conservationist. Cristina’s work has appeared in several publications like National Geographic and TIME.
She is the founder of the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP), which provides a platform for photographers working on environmental issues. She is a co-founder of SeaLegacy with Paul Nicklen. She also takes stunning environmental portraits of people living in distant tribes and empowers those who don’t have the chance to speak about their lives and their environmental problems.
Tumblr media
Tim Laman is a field biologist, wildlife photojournalist, and filmmaker. He got his PhD from Harvard for pioneering research in Borneo’s rainforest canopy. Since then, he focuses on telling stories of endangered wildlife. His most known projects are about birds-of-paradise and orangutans.
He has been working all around the world,  documenting even the most remote corners of it.  He has published several feature stories in National Geographic magazine and worked on films with Netflix and BBC. He has won numerous incredibly prestigious awards. His work is featured and exhibited internationally.
Tumblr media
Sam Gregg is a self-taught documentary and portrait photographer from London. His work has been featured several times online and in print as well. He participates in many different exhibitions worldwide. He plays an important role in drawing attention to contemporary issues regarding the society we live in.
Sam is interested in marginalised communities. Through his work, he gives a voice to the people on the peripheries. These communities are usually deliberately misrepresented or hidden away. He works against stereotypes while staying honest about social structures and their representation in the media.

Environmental Historic Portrait Photographers
Paul Strand sought to express the feeling of the land and its inhabitants directly, honestly, and with respect. His prints are masterly in detail and tonality, and his approach has greatly influenced American photography. Strand advocated "straight photography," and photographed street portraits to city scenes, machine forms, and plants with his distinctive clarity, precision, and geometric form. From 1904-09, he studied photography under Lewis Hine at the Ethical Culture School in New York, where he was born. Hine introduced Strand to Alfred Stieglitz, who encouraged him and gave him an exhibition at in 1915, and published his work in the two final issues of Camera Work. Active as both a still photographer and a filmmaker, Strand has been extremely influential.

Arnold Newman was a celebrated American photographer known for his environmental portraits of artists and celebrities such as Pablo Picasso, Igor Stravinsky, and Marilyn Monroe. “There are many things that are very false about photography when it is accepted without question,” he once explained. “You must recognize and interpret it as you would any other art form, and then maybe it is a little more than real.” Born on March 3, 1918 in New York, NY, he grew up between Atlantic City and Miami, and went on to study at the University of Miami on scholarship for two years. He left school and moved to Philadelphia, where he worked as a 49-cent portrait photographer. Newman relocated to New York in 1946, and shortly thereafter he was shooting photos for Look and Harper’s Bazaar. Unlike other portrait photographers of his time, such as Richard Avedon, Newman captured his subjects at home or working. The artist died on June 6, 2006 in New York, NY. Today, his works are held in the collections of the George East Museum in Rochester, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., among others.

Environmental Collages
A pioneer of the 1960s British movement, David Hockney is one of the most celebrated and prolific artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Endlessly versatile, he has produced acrylic paintings, photo collages, full-scale opera set designs, and digital works created on iPads. Hockney first gained recognition for his semi-abstract paintings of gay love. He moved to California in 1964 and captured his new home in sensual, pastel-hued scenes of uninhibited queer men whose idyllic, sunny backdrops feature swimming pools, palm trees, and light, beautiful homes. Hockney has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, among many other institutions. On the secondary market, his work has sold for more than $90 million.

Adrian Brannan is a contemporary artist who works mainly in the medium of photo collage focusing on cityscapes as his most frequently chosen subject matter. Adrian has worked in this medium since studying at the Glasgow School of Art from where he graduated with Honours in 2000.

International Women’s Day
In honor of International Women’s Day I want to celebrate some of the women who have inspired me. There are few women who have been able to rise to the top in the field of conservation and photography. As in many jobs in the field of science, women are highly underrepresented. When I was growing up and dreaming of becoming a Conservation Photographer I had very few role models to look up to. I see now that the list of women in conservation and photography is growing and it is more important than ever that we recognize them for the work that they do.
Please check out the work of these amazing pioneers.

The superb cart-wheeling spider (Carparachne sp.) from the Namib desert, photographed for the @meetyourneighbours project on a white background. When I released it back to its dunes I waited for two hours while it dug a new retreat under the sand, to be sure that it wouldn't be predated by any bird or lizard for my fault.
